Items accepted for waste collection

Items that measure approximately 30cm or smaller excluding plastic containers and packaging (➡4), cans, bottles, PET bottles, etc. (➡5), and paper materials (➡6). There is no distinction between combustible waste and incombustible waste.

You cannot put out bulky waste (➡7 ) or items that are not collected by the City Government (➡9 ).

Waste collection pointYour waste collection point is specified. Please ask your neighbors where you should put out waste.

Twice a week. Collection days are set for each community. The collection day is written on a sticker at the waste collection point. Please put out waste after checking the information.If you do not know your collection day, for example if there is no sticker, please contact the collection office (➡�) in the area where you live. (Phone calls can only be made in Japanese.)Waste is also collected on holidays. However, collection days may change during the year-end and New Year holidays.

What time toput out waste

Please put out the garbage bags by 8:30 on the morning of the collection day.Please do not put waste out on the day before collection or after it has been collected. Following the rules will keep the collection point clean for your neighborhood.

How to put out wastePlease put waste in a prepaid garbage bag designated by Sendai City and fasten the bag before putting it out for collection. The quantity you can put out at a time is 45ℓ in volume or 10kg in weight (roughly 1 large designated prepaid garbage bag).

When you want to put out a large quantity of waste at once (➡8 ).

Waste that is not placed in designated prepaid garbage bags will not be collected.

Any waste improperly put out will not be collected.

To prevent crows and other animals from scattering waste, please put out the garbage bags according to your waste collection day and time.

For small rechargeable batteries including portable chargers, please see “Items Not Collected by the City Government” (➡9 ).

3 Household Waste Guide

Other methods are used to dispose of cooking oil, small household appliances (30cm or smaller), clothing and cloths.

Cooking oilThere are collection boxes at supermarkets which display the (oil) logo.

Small household appliancesThere are collection boxes at ward offices and some supermarkets.

Clothing and cloths“Group-based recyclable resource collection” is carried out by local children’s clubs. Also, they can be taken to “recyclable resource collection racks” at ward offices (Miyagino, Wakabayashi, Izumi ward offices) and some citizen centers.

Kitchen wasteRemove as much water f ro m k i tc h e n w a s te a s possible before putting it in a designated prepaid garbage bag.

Used cooking oilAbsorb it with either cloth or paper, or use a coagulant to solidify it.

Examples and instructions for putting out waste

Fragments of glass or porcelain, knives, etc.

Wrap them securely in thick paper or something similar.

P u t t h e m i n t o a designated prepaid garbage bag (other household waste may be placed in the same bag).

Only one bundle will be collected per time at waste collect points. From May to November, bundles can be collected door-to-door for free of charge if you apply to the Bulky Waste Reception Center for pickup ( ➡■7 ). You may also bring them in yourself to a specialized facility. In this case, please contact your nearest collection office in your ward ( ➡■� ).

It is a violation of the regulations not to use the designated prepaid garbage bags. Please note that plastic shopping bags from convenience stores, etc. cannot be used. (Where to buy the designated prepaid garbage bags, the prices, etc. ➡■2 )

Disposable diapersAfter disposing of feces in the toilet, roll the diaper up compactly with the stained part on the inside.

7 Bulky Waste Guide■ What is bulky waste?

Examples of bulky waste disposal fees (these fees are the amount that must be paid to dispose of bulky waste)Fees are set according to the types of articles and size.

You cannot put out items that are not collected by the City Government. (➡■9 ) ※When you want to get rid of waste in large quantities, you can apply for collection as extra waste. (➡■8 )

Please dispose of waste after you have applied for pickup. Waste will not be collected until you apply.

Pickup dates are set. Waste cannot be collected immediately after an application is submitted. Please apply for pickup ahead of time.

Information about points to be aware of, a pickup date, fee payment, and preparation required for pickup can be found on the website. Please be sure to read this information carefully before applying (waste may not be collected if there are errors during this process.)

The “Bulky Waste Disposal Fee Prepaid Label” cannot be refunded or reissued.

Be sure to remove dry batteries from the waste and empty kerosene from containers.

Bulky waste will not be collected if a “Bulky Waste Disposal Fee Prepaid Label” (sticker) is not stuck on.

Even if a sticker is stuck on, bulky waste will not be collected unless your application number is written on it.

� InformationViolating the laws (Punishment by imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to ¥10mil. etc.)

If you put out waste in a place and a manner not conforming to the rules, you shall be punished by law. (Illegal dumping)

It is against the law to dump items that should be put out at a waste collection point (➡■3〜■6), such as household waste or plastic containers and packaging, at a site other than the designated locations.

I f you burn waste in an incinerator not conforming to the approved structures, you shall be punished by law. (Illegal incineration)

It is against the law to put out items that are not collected by the City Government (➡■9) like TV sets, or bulky waste (➡■7) without following the set procedures.

Although a small open-air fire and a camp fire are permitted as exceptions, make necessary precautions so that you do not trouble your neighbors with odor or smoke emissions.

● The elderly and disabled people who are provided with disposable diapers by the City Government (bags will be distributed once a year). -------Please apply using the application form that will be sent to you by the ward office.

Death of animals (cremation of pets)If your pet dies, please contact Sendai City Pet Funeral Hall by phone. You can either have your pet’s body picked up or bring it in yourself.

Fees apply in both cases. Please ask about the fees when applying.

If you want to bring back the ashes or have your pet’s body cremated alone, please request this when you apply.
