Historic Hannibal Itinerary

Day 1Start your foray into Hannibal’s history with a step-on guided tour of Hannibal. This narrated tour of Hannibal’s many sights, including scenic outlooks, famous landmarks and beautiful historic homes, will set the stage for a great trip. (1 – 1.5 hrs)

Begin tour of Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum Properties. This self-guided tour allows your group to explore the roots of Mark Twain’s genius. The tour includes eight buildings, most notably the world-famous Mark Twain Boyhood Home. (1.5 hr)

Get a closer look at Hannibal’s History at the free Hannibal History Museum. Exhibits include other notable Hannibal residents, the Tom Sawyer dioramas and more. (30 min.)

After lunch, allow your group time to take in the beauty of the Mississippi and the Historic Downtown on their own. (2 hr) Sample some great Missouri wines at Cave Hollow West Winery. Find unique vintages with Twain-related labels you can only purchase in Hannibal and try some cave-aged cheese. (1 hr)

Day 2Tour Rockcliffe Mansion, one of America’s Castles! This turn-of-the century mansion overlooks the Mississippi and contains many original furnishings. Other highlights include Tiffany fixtures and stained glass windows and an intriguing family history. Your group will enjoy a docent-guided tour of the mansion. (1.5 hr)

Enjoy learning about another famous Hannibalian – the “Unsinkable Molly Brown”! Historian Lisa Marks presents “The Life and Times of Molly Brown,” a one-woman stage production, for your group. The Titanic’s Unsinkable Molly Brown was born right here in Hannibal, and lived here until she was 17 years old. Marks’ portrayal of Molly Brown (born Margaret Tobin) gets rave reviews from audiences of all ages. (1 hr)

See Hannibal by river aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat. A one-hour sightseeing cruise allows your group to learn interesting facts and tales about the Mighty Mississippi. (1 hr)

*optional – if your group loves architecture and stained glass, make a reservation to see Trinity Episcopal Church. Start your time in Hannibal with an overview from your knowledgeable step-on guide. Your guide will take your group around town where they will enjoy some history and get some great photo ops at the same time. (1 hr)

Hannibal’s historic downtown offers blocks of historic buildings filled with shops, art galleries, pubs, restaurants and museums. Allow your group time to browse this area and do some exploring. (1 hr)

After satisfying your groups ‘taste’ of adventure, take a ‘sweet’ break at Chocolaterie Stam. Home to over a dozen different kinds of homemade gelato daily, the shop’s owners will be happy to bring parts of the group back into the kitchen to show you how the magic is made and let everyone sample some different flavors before deciding on their favorite. Chocolaterie Stam also stocks an impressive supply of rich Stam-family recipe chocolates, bon bons and seasonal treats. (30 min.)

After lunch, enjoy a tour of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum properties. Walk in the footsteps of Mark Twain as you discover how the adventures he enjoyed as a youth in Hannibal gave root to some of America’s greatest literature. Eight buildings give this self-guided tour plenty of variety. (1 - 1.5 hr)

‘Wine-d’ down from your day out and about with a trip to Hannibal’s very own winery. Cave Hollow West Winery features Mark Twain-inspired labels and vintages only available in Hannibal. Sample the variety and choose your favorite for a unique Hannibal keepsake. (30 min.)

Looking for something new? Try adding one or more of these ideas to your trip!

Enjoy a tour from a very special woman - the Titanic’s Unsinkable Molly Brown Herself! “Molly” will board your motor coach and take your group on a ride through the scenic and historic areas of Hannibal, including showing you the humble birthplace where her story began. (1 hr)

Think some of your passengers will want a REAL hands-on experience? Book a session with a master potter at Ayers Pottery. Steve Ayers has been making beautiful, functional pottery for over 30 years and will show your guests around his working pottery shop. Then, the real fun begins as your group takes the wheel (the potter’s wheel that is) and throws their own piece. Finished pieces will be fired and shipped to the person’s home (because of space, the workshop is limited to 6 people at a time.) (1 hr)

How would your group like to have tea...with the Unsinkable Molly Brown? Enjoy a fine tea and hear the ultimate rags-to-riches story of this Gilded Age heroine. Your group will laugh and cry as Molly’s true story weaves its spell from historian Lisa Marks. (1.5 hrs)

Did you ever wonder what happened to Jim in the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? Now you can find out in the new exhibit “Jim’s Journey: The Huck Finn Freedom Center.” Sharing the story of “Uncle Daniel” - Twain’s inspiration for the fictional Jim - find out his life and legacy, as well

as the African-American experience in Mark Twain’s Hannibal. (30 min.)

Want to explore America’s Pastime? How about a behind-the-scenes tour of Clemens Field, home to the NAIA team the Hannibal Cavemen? Tour the facilities and see pictures from the many years this historic field has seen use – even in WWII as a POW camp! During the season, you can also choose to catch a game and relive the up-close excitement of pure baseball! (1-3 hrs)
