We celebrated our British values last Friday on our Learning Community afternoon, with our Year 7 and 8 students exploring, ’What Makes Britain Great’. We based the afternoon on four key British values and two of these were allocated to each year group: Year 7 tutor groups focused on ‘Democracy’ and the ‘Rule of Law’ and Year 8 tutor groups looked at ‘Personal liberties and mutual respect’ and ‘Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs’.

Year 7 and 8 students were encouraged to be as creative as possible in what they did and to use their ‘IGS tie values’ to maximise the quality of their presentation...and they didn’t disappoint. They used all their skills marvellously and we were treated to splendid displays incorporating music, drama, art, ICT, and food technology. The quality of student work produced was brilliant. Thank you to our Year 9 students who adopted the role of Learning Facilitators and Year 10 students who had the job of evaluating the content and creativity of each tutor group display. Here’s what our students think to the question, ’What makes Britain great?’. ...the Union Jack!

...national pride!

...Mr Johnston playing Oasis’ back catalogue!

...traditional sweets!

...BGT!

...the Beatles! ...Pancake Day!

...more food!

...teamwork!

...tea and biscuits!

All in all, our British values got a big thumbs up!

...the Arts!

Congratulations to Amelie Pardoe (7DJJ) who is the first student in the whole of the school to receive their Gold PB Certificate...well done Amelie!

Congratulations to Jonny Kelly (9PB), Sam Evans (9LG), Olivia Collins (9LG), Samantha Bruce (9ACF), Ella Shouler-Harris (9SL), Nat Perkins (9PDH), Lewis Gledhill (9PDH), Millie Stockwell (9LAM), Lucy Sanderson (9ACF), Danny Leach (9HED), Arthur Ashcroft (9PDH) and Faith Bradley (9DSF) who took part in the Citizenship Foundations' Magistrates Court Mock Trial (MCMT) competition last Saturday and came a very respectable second (an improvement on last year when we came third).

All of the team did exceptionally well in their performances but it is the work of the team that impressed the most. Other magistrates stepped in to watch us and commented on how professional IGS was, even when two of our witnesses were badgered mercilessly by one school's particular defence but were magnificent at keeping their cool and turning the questioning around.

The competition is not without controversy however; traditionally the top two groups have gone through to the next (regional) heat, indeed the Leeds and Burnley areas have already done so in this round but Bradford was restricted to one team.

Mrs Lister ‘appealed’ to the organising group and following serious ‘arbitration’ secured ‘damages’ in the form of a place in the regional heats in May...result Mrs Lister!

Well done to our Year 9 rugby team who were in tremendous form on Tuesday evening. They played their White Rose Schools’ Series Rugby matches at Stacks Field. Being on home turf gave them edge as they dominated their games. The results were: Bingley Grammar School 7 v 26 South Craven , IGS 24 v 7 Ermysted’s, South Craven 26 v 10 Ermysted’s IGS 19 v 12 Bingley Grammar School, IGS 14 v 10 South Craven and Ermysted’s Grammar School 24 v 12 Bingley

Well done to our U12, 13 and 15 netball A teams who played their final games of the season on Monday night against Bradford Grammar B teams. It was a fantastic end to the season for U12 and U15 A teams, the U13s also put up a great team effort with special thanks to the B team players who helped out the U13 A team.

U12 IGS 8 v 4 BGS B Player of the match:

Florrie Pickering (7TJB)

U13 IGS 4 v 24 BGS B Player of the match:

Libby Ives (8RRG)

U15 IGS 15 v 13 BGS B Player of the match:

Becky Hadfield (10JB)

Well played to our Year 9 hockey team who put on a fantastic performance as they rose to the challenge of playing Bradford Grammar School’s senior team on Tuesday. Despite being 2 players short, they were not outclassed and fought hard throughout the game.

They grew in confidence against a more experienced team, and although losing 2-5 at half time, they held BGS to a creditable draw 1-1 in the second half with a final result of 3-6. Well done to: Amber Medway (9PDH), Rachel Scott (9PDH), Beth Day (9PB), Faith Bradley (9DSF), Amy Moore (9DSF), Emily Rayland (9PDH), Kara Milligan (9PDH), Jasmine Blackburn (9DSF) and Georgina Mumby (9LAM) GK.

Congratulations to our U13 hockey team who took part in the U13 Bradford Schools’ Invitational Hockey Tournament on Monday at South Craven School. Although they lost their first match 1-0 to BGS A team (who finished tournament winners!) Stef Rose made some phenomenal saves in goal! The girls went on to draw 0-0 against Bingley Grammar School B (they very unlucky not to score). The team then beat Hipperholme Grammar 2-0 and secured a draw against South Craven 1-1. They narrowly lost the final match of the tournament to Prince Henry's 1-0.

The girls finished a creditable 3rd overall, well done to all the girls involved: Stef Rose, captain, (8LNR); Ella Hammond (8ELC); Mia Roch (8MEH); Libby Madden (8MEH); Emma Whitaker-Pitts (8MH); Tegan Bastow (8LNR); Mathilda Townson (8MH); Eleanor Thorpe (8AMB); Eloise Hall (8PO) and Bernadette Raven (8PO).

Well done to our under 15 boys’ hockey team who played admirably in the Yorkshire Championships at Pocklington last Friday. A young team with students from Years 7 - 10 created a stir when taking a 1-0 lead against an experienced well, drilled St Peter's School team but conceded twice in the last 4 minutes to lose 2-1.

The opposition's Head of Hockey suggested we deserved a draw, and was amazed to discover the boys were playing together for the first time. Similar heartbreak followed against Ampleforth College when again a lead was squandered, and a controversial penalty corner was drag flicked high into the net past our diminutive but awesome keeper. Thumping 4-0 victories over Hymer's College and Kettlethorpe High School followed, with Tom Hagan, Oliver Burton and impressive captain Oscar Locke all scoring.

The team finished 3rd in the group, narrowly missing out on a semi-final place. Thanks to Matthew Sykes (12AJK) for umpiring and congratulations to all the players on doing so well. Well played to: Carrick Matthews (7GS/JMP); Jacob Smithson (7MPC); Tom Hagan (8RRG); Barnaby Walsh (8LNR); Sam Bretherick (9LAM); Charlie Day (9LG); David Rimmington (9SP0; Oliver Burton (10JDA); Matthew Hall (10CW); Alex Hargraves (10MEK); Oscar Locke (10CW) and Archie White (10JDA).

Congratulations to Jamie Kidd (9PB) who took part in the Dutch Open Taekwondo Championships in Eindhoven, Holland on the 12th and 13th of March. Jamie competed incredibly well and won the bronze medal.

Well done to our U12A netballers who competed in the West Yorkshire School Games Netball Finals on Saturday. They finished 4th in their league which meant unfortunately they didn't progress to the final stages. However, the girls put up a valiant effort and played really well. The individual matches finished:

IGS 1 v 3 Woodhouse Grove, IGS 3 v 2 Silcoates, IGS 3 v 3 Brighouse High and IGS 3 v 7 Huddersfield Grammar

The girls were, as ever, brilliantly behaved and represented the school excellently. They should be extremely proud of their achievements, qualifying for the event put them in the top 10 schools in West Yorkshire. A great achievement! Amy Gott (7MPC) was voted for by the girls as Player of the Tournament!

Well played to our Year 9 footballers who played in a rearranged Central Venue fixture on Tuesday 8th March. The results were:

IGS 1-3 St. Mary's and IGS 2-4 Abbey Grange

Despite taking the lead in both games the opposition proved too tough on this occasion. The team are looking forward to their last fixture of the season.

Congratulations to Carrick Matthews (7GS/JMP) and Jacob Smithson (7MPC) who represented the U12 team for Ben Rhydding Hockey Club at the weekend. The boys’ team finished as runners up in the Yorkshire League.

The Year 7/8 girls’ team finished 2nd: Caitlin Oddie (8AMB); 5th Bernadette Raven (8PO); 7th Evie Graves (7JWK); 8th Katie Meredith (8RRG); 9th Ruby Scargill (7VEC) and 10th Grace Scargill (7TJB). Our Year 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 boys’ team finished 2nd: 5th Joe Haigh (10LV); 7th Oscar Stapleton (10CW) and 12th Arran Burnett (9HED). Emily Field (9LAM) valiantly raced in the Year 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 girls’ race finishing 2nd but unfortunately there were insufficient runners from all schools to provide team places.

Well done to our Cross Country runners who took part in the Keighley and Craven Schools’ Cross Country League races on 9th March in Silsden.

Congratulations to Nisha Cant (10JK); Izzy Weir (10JK); Sophie Dale (10LV); Becky Hadfield (10JB); Kirsty McMillan (10MEK); Sophie Armitage (10JB); Abi Prentice (11JLF) and Jess Burgess (11HGW) who, as part of U16s Ben Rhydding hockey team, won the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League and play off finals last weekend.

The team played York (who they previously lost to) and drew 0-0, went on to beat Sheffield 2-0 (one goal scored by Sophie Armitage) and Adel 3-0, (hatrick from Nisha Cant) which meant they finished top of their pool and reached the semi finals. The girls beat Wakefield 1-0 in the semi-final (goal by Kirsty McMillan) to go through to the final where they beat Thirsk on penalties 5-4 in the final after a 0-0 draw.

Well done to: Florrie Pickering (7TJB); Madeline Crutchley (7JWK); Charlotte Elston (7TJB); Sophie Smeaton (7DJJ); Amelia Gibbons (7DJJ); Amy Gott (7MPC); Lucy Chadwick (7GS/JMP); Isla Robertson (7AW); Sara Weller (7AW); Ella Butcher (7DJJ); Elspeth Tometzki (7DJJ); Lucy Harrison (7FEA); Neve Tunney (7DJJ); Mia Proctor (7AWD); Maisie Clegg (7DJJ); Emily Fotherby (7AW) and Georgia Weston (7JWK) who as the U12 netball A and B team took part in the U12 Bradford District Tournament.

The A team achieved the following results: IGS 5 v 3 BGS B, IGS 9 v 0 South Craven B, IGS 8 v 1 Beckfoot, IGS 3 v 3 Parkside and IGS 5 v 0 Holy Family.

They then progressed to the semi-final against South Craven and narrowly missed out on a place in the final losing 4-3, coming 3rd overall - some fantastic performances from the team. The B team lost 4 and won 1 game, leaving them 5th in their group stage. It was a great experience for the girls and they are really progressing as a team.

Congratulations to: Jamie Spiller (10KL); Jasper Evans (10JK); Euan Savage (10JK); Nathan Foster (10MWC); Holly Park (10JK); Imogen Brodaty (10LV); Jacob Cooke (10MWC); Harry Clough (10MWC); Tom Shaw (10JB); Matthew Hall (10CW); Ellie Cooper (10JDA) and Sophie Armitage (10JB) who took part in the Amazing STEM Race on Wednesday 16th March at the University of Leeds.

The event involves an amazing race across the University of Leeds campus while competing in STEM challenges along the way! Students worked in teams of four to solve STEM problems and collect STEM bonus points as they raced to the finish! Our teams worked brilliantly together through challenges ranging from Origami Organelles to building rollercoasters and making necklaces of their own DNA! Our red team and came 1st: Imogen Brodaty, Jamie Spiller, Matt Hall and Harry Clough and our navy team 2nd: Jasper Evans, Nathan Foster, Euan Savage and Holly Park. The event is part of the Leeds Festival of Science that runs 5th – 23rd March. The University of Leeds along with partners across the city run these events which form an extensive programme for students from primary school through to Post16. All events are free of charge. The STEM acronym brings together the words science, technology, engineering and mathematics – words which are associated with some of the most important and exciting areas of human endeavour.

Whether it is creating new lightweight alloys for aircraft design; formulating life saving drugs to combat disease; designing processes to reduce CO2emissions; developing technologies to build tablet computers; or sending a man to the moon, STEM knowledge has impacted all of our lives. The knowledge and skills gained in the STEM subject areas can however be applied in a number of career paths.

Craig Ogden, the internationally acclaimed virtuoso guitarist, will be leading a guitar workshop at Holme Valley Music Centre, Holmfirth High School. This day has been specially organised for guitar students from Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. The workshop will be aimed at grade 2 players through to advanced guitarists (intermediate standard upwards). We are hoping that as many of our students will attend as possible to create a huge ensemble and provide a fantastic atmosphere. We are very grateful to Holmfirth High for sponsoring the event. To receive the maximum benefit from the workshop students should expect to attend for the full day. The workshop will be great fun and hugely rewarding but it will demand real focus from those taking part; for this reason younger children may want to have a parent/carer attend with them.

Programme for the day

Cost - £10 for the full day including Workshop, Master class and Recital. Tickets will be available for parents/carers to watch the recital - £5/£3 concessions. See Mrs Chapman for more information.

On Thursday 10th March we welcomed our Spanish Exchange students from Escuelas Pías de San Fernando, Pozuelo in Madrid on our 10th anniversary of the exchange. This year 22 students came over to Ilkley. They enjoyed a full programme of activities including time in school attending lessons with their exchange partners including: a day out to York visiting the Minster and the Castle Museum; a trip to Saltaire and Haworth and a taste of the Yorkshire Dales by visiting Whitescar Caves and they also went for a walk over Malham Cove with our governor Mrs Wharmby. This year saw the addition of a very special event at Betty’s Cookery School, where the students took part in a bread making activity followed by a tour of the bakery and bread tasting.

On the Monday evening the MFL team held a quiz and Mr Crolla, who took part in the exchange for the first three years before he moved to South Craven School, returned as quiz master extraordinaire. It was a fabulous evening. The Spanish students enjoyed this experience as they have nothing like it in Spain. The host families have also entertained the students over the weekend with trips to Scarborough, The Lake District and The Yorkshire Dales. Everyone attended a farewell meal at The Wheatley Hotel in Ben Rhydding before they set off back to Madrid. A huge thanks to all involved in this exchange – it has been tremendously successful and we hope to continue for many more years in the future so that more students from IGS are able to take part in this fulfilling experience.
