During term 3 class 4B/P from St John’s Primary School were lucky enough to take part in ‘Tackling Numbers,’ an initiative run by Bath Rugby to get children involved in mathematics through rugby. The whole class thoroughly enjoyed having the Bath rugby representative in the classroom and as a special treat 8 lucky children were selected to play a tag rugby match during the half time of Bath Rugby vs Worcester Warriors. These children played Westfi eld and won 20 - 0 on the day. It was a once in a lifetime experience and one the children really enjoyed. Well done to Toby Vining, Euan Carter, Alice Gait, Freya Gaynor, Joshua Singtathong, Joshua Perry, Lucas Purnell and Matthew Cleaves. They all represented St John’s fantastically and gave the crowd an excellent demonstration of their tag rugby skills. Well done!

Is it rugby maths today?Every Thursday morning when Year 4 arrive at St Mary’s Primary School in Timsbury for a session of Bath Rugby’s Tackling Numbers, they ask their Class Teacher Hannah Smythe: “Is it Rugby Maths today?”, “That’s what they call it,” Hannah says, “they absolutely love it!”When visiting Year 4 at St Mary’s this week, I soon picked up on the enthusiasm for the ‘Tackling Numbers’ way of learning. Bath Rugby’s Community Coach, Jack Howden, was busy delivering this brilliant six week programme, put together by MBNA and Premiership Rugby to motivate and encourage children to enjoy maths. The programme is about learning the intricacies of numbers through the medium of sport. Measuring rugby pitches, calculating scores from matches, measuring your own height and handspan and comparing them to real life sized rugby players, are just some of the fun rugby related activities for them to look forward to. The first hour of this third session took place in the classroom followed by an hour spent outside in the snow learning the skills of rugby along with throwing snowballs! Jack told me: “Today we have been collecting data from the children’s favourite skills such as passing, tagging and dodging. From this we have created bar graphs, pictograms and tally charts to reflect the information collected.”Speaking again to Hannah, she said: “They really enjoy it and it’s great to see them engaging with all the activities. It’s good for them because it enables them to see maths in a real life context rather than just maths in the classroom.”Tacking Numbers is a great way to help youngsters to look at maths in a different way. Whether they are measuring the pitch or collecting data for their bar graphs, it’s all terrific fun. Roll on next week’s ‘Rugby Maths!’

Blind dog training

Cub Scouts from 1st Midsomer Norton ‘C’ Pack learned about guide dog training at one of their recent meetings. They were visited by Pearl, a black labrador/retriever cross with her trainer Linda Hole from Paulton. The Cubs were able to try on different types of spectacles which simulate some of the more common sight disabilities, and they played some blindfold games. Mrs Hole then spoke to the youngsters about how she receives puppies when they are six and a half weeks old, teaches them to obey simple commands, and takes them to a variety of public places to experience traffic noise, supermarkets, restaurants, and even the workplace.When they are thirteen months old the dogs move on to a specialist training centre in Leamington Spa for a few weeks of intensive training before they are eventually ‘sold’ for a nominal amount to those with severe sight impairment. The cost of training each dog is £45,000. Mrs Hole has been training puppies for twenty-six years, and she told the cubs that Pearl was her best ever trainee, and she will be very sad when the times comes for her to move on.At the conclusion of the meeting eight year-old Che was invested as a new Cub.Anyone wishing to find out more about Scouting in Midsomer Norton should visit www.nortonscouts.net

Story time comes to life at St Mary’sThe children at St Mary’s Primary School in Writhlington were elated when they arrived in their classrooms to see that the books they were reading had indeed, come to life! A magic wardrobe from Narnia arrived in one classroom with a secret passage through it into a winter wonderland and the entrance to another classroom had transformed itself into a Hobbit hole. A superb learning environment for all.

Kian’s charity persuasionOver the Christmas period, the Old Station Inn at Hallatrow held a raffl e in aid of Dorothy House, the Winsley Cancer Hospice. Kian King took it upon himself to persuade many customers to participatin the raffl e and so doing, he took the total raised to over £250! Paulton Scouts awarded silver and bronzeMembers of 2nd Paulton Beaver Colony and Cub Pack were celebrating after thirteen of them gained Chief Scout’s Awards at ceremonies last week.Beaver Scouts Tom and James were awarded bronze; Cub Scouts Oliver, Jacob, Alfi e, Tom, Holly, Bradley, Daniel, Olivia, Izzy, Vicky and Terri were awarded silver. In each case the badge is the highest available for their age group, and is achieved after each youngster has successfully completed a series of challenges. Tom age 7, said being a Beaver was a real adventure, “I loved the family camp and the fun we had.” Vicky, an eight year-old Cub said, “I love camping in the rain, and hearing the noise as the raindrops hit the tent.” Thomas, aged ten, said, “I loved making a model volcano out of plasticine, and then making it erupt by fi lling it with kitchen ingredients.” Daniel, age eight, said he enjoyed making dens in the woods, but he didn’t think they would be waterproof. Group Scout Leader Clive Richards said, “All the leaders are very proud of these young people for what they have achieved. Year Two at St John’s Primary School have been learning

about Pirates. They have researched the features of an island and developed their mapping skills by using an atlas to fi nd islands which surround the UK. They have also been enjoying the role play area, dressing up as pirates who sail the seven seas. In ICT they up loaded their photograph and used it to add paint with a variety of tools. This enabled us to make ourselves look like real pirates. At the end of the topic we visited the SS Great Britain in Bristol, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This was a really fun day out, topped off by dressing up as various visitors and workmen who would have been at the ships maiden voyage, by reinacting pulling ropes and waving fl ags as the ship set sail. A great time was had by all.

On Tuesday 29th January, High Littleton’s After-School Choir Club performed at the O2 Arena in London alongside many other schools across the country. The children, teachers and parents that attended had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed the concert in the evening. All the hard work since September, learning the words and the routines, really paid off and the choir was truly impressive. The children said, “We were singing and everyone was clapping, I felt special and happy!”, “The journey through London was very long but it was great seeing Big Ben all lit up!” and “I loved every minute!”‘Young Voices’ who organised the huge event believe music and singing enhances life and that the exciting, fun and inspirational experience provides children with memories which will stay with them forever.

Children from Farrington Gurney Primary School, The Academy of Trinity, Midsomer Norton Primary School, Paulton Junior School and Westfi eld Primary School all showcased their gymnastics skills.The children were placed into level 1 and level 2 groups. Level 1 comprising of children who do a small amount of gymnastics and level 2 were children that are part of a gymnastics club and therefore train on a weekly basis.

The children were asked to perform a fl oor routine and also a vault jump for the judges.

It’s been a very cold winter and no doubt lots of us will admit we have stayed indoors and kept warm, but Spring is upon us and the Easter holidays is the perfect time to get out and about in the Spring sunshine.

Living in the South West we are lucky enough to have some fantastic places to visit right on our doorstep from exhilarating horse riding and go-karting to chilled out days sightseeing, there’s so much to do in the local area which you don’t need to spend an arm and leg on fuel to get there.

A visit to one of the many working farms in the area which are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy a beautiful Spring day whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around.

Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet.

With the majority of us feeling ‘the pinch’ at the moment it’s a good idea to have some plans for some ‘budget’ days too. How about a bike ride along the nearest cycle path, a walk in the local countryside or forest trail to see all the spring flowers or a trip to the local swimming pool.

Most important of all is for the whole family to enjoy some quality time together and for your children to be relaxed and revitalised ready to face the new term and of course for you all to have terrific fun creating some memorable days out.

Brown paintThin brown paper - tissue, greaseproof or packing paper will all work, and you could include some lengths of brown wool too

Wiggle eyesScraps of yellow card or foam

GlueInstructions:

Paint the plate brown and leave to dry. Rip the paper into pieces and scrunch up so they form fairly

large balls. Glue these around the rim of the plate.To make the birds, cut two teardrop wings from craft foam and

stick either side of a pompom. Add a yellow triangle for the beak and two wiggle eyes.

Glue the birds to the middle of the plate.

There is a recognised order in which children develop their speech sounds. The early sounds children start producing, well before they are using words, include ‘m’ and ‘b’ and the sounds which come later include ‘c’ (kuh) and ‘s’. Parents are so used to the way their child speaks they understand every word even when sounds are mispronounced. “I dot a bid dod” (I’ve got a big dog)“My tat id lellow” (My cat is yellow)

It is often when the child starts school the Teacher or SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) pick up on speech delay. It is normal for children in Reception to have some sounds which they are still learning and the daily focus on phonics can prompt a sudden improvement in the clarity of many 4 and 5 year olds’ speech. But some children fi nd it harder to update the sound patterns they have developed – these children are said to have ‘delayed speech sound development’. Children who have had glue ear or other hearing diffi culties can take longer to update their sound systems but delayed speech sound development is common, particularly in boys. Some children benefi t from targeted work on specifi c sounds with a Speech and Language Therapist. A speech and language therapy program helps the child through the steps involved in learning a new speech sound. It is very important to remember a child has to be able to say the sound on its own before he or she can put it into a word. Asking a child to keep repeating a whole word will not help them to say it more clearly.

The key to a successful therapy program is the child builds confi dence and has fun! Its difficult to find time to exercise as we all lead such busy lives, whether your working full time or part time it sometimes feels impossible to juggle work, kids and the home and have any time to spare. But exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and for this reason finding the best time for exercise is essential so before you convince yourself you have no time for exercise, consider your options.

Regular exercise can help you achieve and maintain an ideal weight, which can be important in managing many health conditions, or may just make you feel happier about your appearance. You can expect to feel energised as exercise makes you feel more energetic, while sitting around not doing much can make you feel sluggish.

It is recommended adults should do a minimum of 30 minutes moderate-intensity physical activity, five days per week. You don’t have to do the whole 30 minutes in one go though.

Decide on your type of exercise: If you decide on why you are exercising, is it to

stay fit? Lose weight? Or to stay healthy? Once you decide on your motive for exercising you

can determine what work out will help you reach your goal.

Make exercising a priority: Think about the physical and emotional benefits you will receive from exercising and to keep yourself motivated give yourself small rewards maybe a new item of clothing or a new item of gym kit.

Don’t be too hard on yourself: If you cant get to exercise don’t be too hard on yourself its all right to miss a day.

Set realistic goals: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to achieve unrealistic goals, if you smash your goal before you planned to give yourself a huge pat on the back, this is better than feeling despondent if you don’t achieve something which was probably slightly unrealistic.

The Spring sunshine has arrived and with it has shed a whole new light on our houses...dust! Yes, the dark days of winter are disappearing at last but one thing the dark days are good for is hiding a multitude of housework sins which are now on full display as the sun starts to shine gloriously through our smeary windows. It’s time to get those rubber gloves on for the annual spring clean!

Finding the time to spring clean can be tricky so why not involve the kids, it’s a great way for them to earn some extra pocket money. Make a list of all the jobs you want to get done and share them out between the family but make sure the jobs you allocate to the kids are going to be easy enough for them to do as you don’t want to make your list longer by having to re-trace their steps.

I share my hutch with Rupert Rabbit and we love being together. We have lots of fun and we enjoy running in our pen in the garden and sometimes the children we live with let us out to run in the grass, but they always keep an eye on us so we can’t get out.We have a big shelter in our hutch where we can both sleep and rest when we want to. This is fi lled with hay and newspaper to keep us warm and this is also where our owners put our food too.Our owners always give us a varied diet and we enjoy eating hay and grass, rabbit food from the pet shop and also greens. We enjoy broccoli, kale, fresh herbs and we love fresh dandelion leaves from the garden. Our owner says root vegetables such as carrots are high in sugar so we are only allowed these as treats. We like to have fresh water in our bottle every day.Although I don’t really love being picked up by my owners I do know I need to be brushed and groomed to keep my fur healthy, so I don’t mind that. I like it when my owner holds me close as I feel safe and secure then.I love gnawing on things and it also keeps my teeth healthy too. My owner gives me gnawing sticks and cardboard tubes for fun.I am looking forward to the Spring so I can spend more time outside and in the sunshine.
