Festival of India (FOI) 2019 - Invitation www.thefestivalofindia.org

Dear Friends, Festival of India 2019 is scheduled for September 21st & 22nd at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The ever-dedicated team has started the preparation and you may have already heard from an FOI team member. As you are aware, FOI is a key fund-raising activity for the Hindu Center. As always, FOI is looking for your sup-port with the souvenir book. If you have a business, please help us by supporting the souvenir book. If you or your employer would like more information on participating in the souvenir book, the FOI team would be de-lighted to meet with you and the decision makers at your employer. We can explain the complete package of benefits in sponsoring the festival and participating in the souvenir book and other activities. An event like FOI requires a tremendous amount of energy and support from our community. It is out flagship event and we need lot of people of step-up and help. We are blessed to have an amazing set of selfless and dedicated volunteers. At the same time, we need new volunteers to make the even bigger and better. We have lots of opportunities for people with different interests, skills and time commitment. Please get in touch with us or show up for a meet-ing. We would be delighted to match you with the right opportunity -- volunteering at a booth, help coordinate the event or serving on the committee. It’s a great way to help your community, meet new people and also de-velop new skills! FOI team meetings will be held on 3rd Sunday of each month from June till September. OUTSTANDING LIFE SERVICE TO HCV

The Program as approved by the Board of Directors of HCV in 2015 is designed to continue every year. As you are aware the awardees for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 were Dr. Manikoth Kurup, Dr. Narsimha Chari, Mr. In-der Midha and Mrs Veena Kukreja respectively. This year’s Selection Committee is soliciting nominations for the award for the year 2019. The nominations should reach the following address by October 31, 2019. Each nomination should accompany a short statement as to why the nominee deserves the award. Otherwise, just a name of the nominee should suffice. The Committee provides the following general criteria for the recommendations: “A person who is or was a member in good standing, who made significant contributions to the pursuit of the main ideals or principles of the Hindu Center of Virginia. These ideals include community awareness of Hindu principles and culture, growth of the center as a place of worship and knowledge for the Richmond and sur-rounding communities and is a person of good character and moral principles.”

FOI Cultural Team Update

Hello Friends, We are preparing for another spectacular Cultural Program for Festival of India on September 21st & 22nd, 2019 at Greater Richmond Convention Center. We invite all dance teachers, choreographers, dance directors, teams, all participants along with their families to come and show their amazing creativity on the stage. We appreciate your time and support for the excellent cultural program. Website has been updated with all the detailed rules and regulations. Please pay close attention to these rules and fees. Please make sure to visit the Cultural tab in the FOI website often for updates. http://thefestivalofindia.org/welcomeculturalprogram.asp Important Dates to Remember: * All general and competition entries via online entry form by Saturday, 09/07/2019, 11:59 PM * Last date to submit (general entry only) with late fees is Friday, 09/13/2019, 11:59PM. We reserve the right to stop taking entries before the last date. Fees: All General Entries fees = $25.00; All Competition Entries fees = $50.00 (No Special Day Request because competition can be scheduled either day) All Regular Entries requesting Special day’s fees = $50.00 before Sept 7th. Late fees will be applied in addition to $25.00 for all items after September 7th. (That means $50.00 for general entries only) Changes after trial schedule and final schedule (if possible) is sent $50.00 per item. Please confirm availability of participants for both days before submitting the entries. Also, fill out their correct information especially if they are in multiple items to minimize the conflicting schedule. This year, in an effort to provide ample opportunity for creativity, we are offering following competitions in addition to the regu-lar performances. Please make sure to read Rules page for both general and competition entries carefully. Following are the competitions for this year including the descriptions and limits. All Competition entries must have min-imum of 4 participants and all participants must be available both days to perform. Detailed rules are listed on the webpage.

"Paani Re Paani": We are looking to see sweet performances that por trays “Water”. Instrumental and/or dance chore-ography based on the theme of water is required. Choose age appropriate songs that has words related to water for the performance. Examples: sea, dariya, samunder, nadiya, river, ocean, raindrops, barsaat, barish, bunde etc. Show us the best moves those tiny feet can do on the stage using the creative costumes and mind blowing props on the melodious songs.

Ages: 5-8; Time: 6 min max "Can't stop that Beat": Show us your best dance moves on the songs or instrumental melodies from films that are all

time popular, peppy and that radiates high energy. The performance should have super entertaining value, best looking unique costumes and artistic props. Performances may include famous musical composition. Songs should not have any cursing or inappropriate words and meanings. Any songs or music that shows festivities in Indian culture are highly en-couraged but not required. Ages: 9-13; Time: 8 min max

"Old is the New Gold": Show us the best Dance Moves. Choose songs from old and new films. Per form on old songs with new dance style and newer songs (anything after year 2000) with older dance style. Both styles must be shown as the part of the performance. Wow us with the out of the box creativity, choice of songs, music , filmy style costumes, props and superior entertaining dance moves. Ages: 14 Years & above; Time: 8 min maximum

"Folk competition": Choose folk songs from regional languages or from movies and show the Indian folk dances with vibrant colors. Mixing of more than one folk style is allowed. Emphasize on costumes, typical folk dances and props.

Ages: a. 8-13 and b. 14 and up; Time: 8 min max "Our Shiny Star" : Pick any character from Indian culture and show it in the form of dance drama. The character

can be religious, mythical, historical, patriotic or any famous folk entity. Examples: Story of Krishna, Meera, Pandurang, Akbar, Gandhi ji etc. or any regional character. Show the story with creative props, costumes and artistic performance. Movie songs or scenes are allowed. Any episode of the life of the character or the whole life span can be shown. The audience should be captivated by the story line of the character. Ages: All ages from 6 and above; Time: 15 min max;

The Hindu Center of Virginia encourages all community members to avail the well equipped classrooms in the temple as well as the community hall with kitchen

(NO COOKING) for your needs. You can rent the hall for your family activities that do not conflict with the temple religious activities. Facilities are available for

rent to conduct language, art, dance classes, meetings, private functions such as birthdays and marriages as well as religious ceremonies with HCV priest service.

Hindu Center of Virginia Annual General Body Meeting Updates

The Annual General Body Meeting of HCV was held on July 14, 2019 at Hindu center Community Hall. The following Corporate Members were elected to the Board of Directors: Mr. Ashok Aggarwal, Mr. Abhay Bajekal, Dr. Shaival Kapadia and Mr. Jyoti Mohapatra. The following Corporate Members were elected to the Executive Committee:

Mr. Kedar Thoota – President Mr. Rakesh Chug – Vice-President Mr. Sridhar Sundaram – Secretary Mr. Gunvant Patel - Treasurer
