DETAILED ITINERARY

ADDIS ABABA

Day 1 ‐ Arrive in Addis Ababa. Transfer to Saro‐Maria Hotel, an attractive four star hotel in the center of Addis.

Today we will have full day sightseeing tour of the capital which includes the Ethnological Museum in the former

palace of King Hailesillassie, the National (Archaeological) Museum, the superb Holy Trinity Cathedral, the various

historical monuments of Addis Ababa; and Merkato largest opeŶ‐air market in Africa.

AWASH NATIONAL PARK

Day 2 –Drive to Awash national park. The Awash National Park is one of the most beautiful in Ethiopia. The water

of the Awash River passes through a spectacular gorge; the park shelters 392 bird species and various other

mammals: Oryx, gazelle and antelopes. Awash is the longest river in Ethiopia; it doesn’t end in a sea but joins the

Danakil Depression near Assaita and makes sources of a series of lakes. In the afternoon, we visit the park and its

vicinity.

HARAR

Day 3 – Drive to Driredawa and visit the colorful market place of Dire Dawa and the Chat market (mildly stimulant

plant) market of Aweday. In the evening head to the Hyena man, to see an entertainer who feeds the wild hyena in

bare hands.

Day 4 –Today We will have a site seeing of the walled city of Harar (the 4th Islamic center in the world) namely, the

traditional Harari Museum, the famous poet, Arthur Rimbaud`s former house, the grand Jami mosque, the Ras Teferi`s

(the last king of Ethiopia, Haylesilasse) former house, the colorful Christian and Muslim Markets.

Day 6 Drive through the Rift valley system and along the way visit the beautiful Afar people and their villages,

Camel Caravan along the way to Semera. Semera is an overgrown Afar ’ s people settlement, and also served as

the administrative capital of the Afar region

AFDERA

Day 7 - Drive to Afdera, visit the salt lake and the salines and excursion to the working area at the salines. Lake

Afdera, a highly saline body of water and lies at an altitude of 103 meters below sea level and listed as the lowest

lying in the world. Here you will visit the salt extraction of the Afar people from the lake.

ERTA ALE

Day 8- Drive to Erta’ale here where we arrange the camel to ascend our logistics and for those who wish to ride,

Local militia and guide apart from those who already with us. Late afternoon start walking to Erta ‘eale and climb

to Erta Ale volcano and stay overnight on the top of the mountain. Erta Ale is 613 meters tall, with a lava lake at

DALLOL Day 9 - Drive to Dallol, Visit the hot springs at Dallol, composed of different minerals along with sulphurs and

potash and create spectacular colors. Dallol is renowned as being the hottest inhabited place on earth; You are

likely to see the long 'caravane de sel' – camel trains loaded with salt and visit Lake Asale Salt mining with the Salt

HAMEDELA Day 10 – Morning visit the Salt workers in Dallol and continue drive to Hamedela along unmarked sandy tracks,

passing Afar settlements along the way. Ahmedela is the base for exploring the salt mines and seeing the salt

workers and camel caravans.

Day 11 - Drive to Gerhalta through the town of Berhale. Ascend to the Tigrian highland with the camel caravan

and stop for photo over the depression. Visit at least one Tigray Rock church
