    METALS

Different types of metals are used in hotel rooms and public areas to create the desiredinteriors. The metals are used as fixtures such as bathroom fittings or wall surfaces

    etc.

Listed below are some of these metals:

    GOLD

It is a yellow metal. It is found naturally in the earth. It is an expensive metal andrequires some care. It can be used in hotels as bathroom fixtures (eg taps), as walls, aspaintings, as artifacts, etc.

The surface may be gold plated or gold leafed. Wet dusters and intensive pressure

should never be used to dust gold leafed surfaces. Dry lint free dusters can be used forbuffing and keeping the gold leaf surface clean and shining.

    SILVER

Is a white soft metal which is found naturally in the earth It is a metal which is unaffectedby water & pure air. Silver artifacts and art work are sometimes used in the hotels.

The silver gets easily tarnished and this is due to the action of compounds of sulphur toform silver sulphides. The tarnish varies in colour from yellow through brown to blueblack.

The proprietary Silvo polish is be used to polish silver to remove tarnish.

    STEEL

Is iron containing a little carbon and small quantities of other materials and is often usedfor dados, kick-plates etc.

To prevent corrosion it is normally coated with enamel. This is a smooth surface whichscratches to varying degree and may become stained. A liquid scourer should removeany stains and after removal washing and drying should be sufficient to retain a clean

    appearance

    STAINLESS STEEL

Is steel to which 8-25% of chromium had been added, making it corrosion resistant. It isa tough and durable metal and usually has a mirror polish or matt finish. It can be usedfor fashioning wall tiles etc. Stainless steel can get easily scratched. Can be maintainedby normal washing (minimal abrasion) and proper drying.

    CHROMIUM

Is the coating on steel and used for taps, bath handles, shower fittings. They becomewater spotted and greasy and will not tarnish. Washing and rubbing should be sufficient

    to keep the shine.

    BRASS

It is used for door handles, staircase rods, taps, dustbins, artifacts, kick plates, etc.Mostly these items are lacquered for easy maintenance. Lacquer is a thin protectivecoat to prevent brass from getting tarnished. Any form of abrasion should be avoidedon the lacquered items to prolong life of lacquer. The unlacquered articles needpolishing with a brass polish (e.g. Brasso).

    COPPER

Copper is most frequently found as utensils in the kitchen. It may be found in sheetform as wall surface or as artifacts. It can also be lacquered just like brass. Ifunlacquered copper requires regular polishing to remove tarnish and maintain shine.
