MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time A-2017 My brothers and sisters in the Lord! We meet a woman in today’s Gospel who wouldn’t change her mind or way of thinking but, incredibly, seems to have successfully encouraged Jesus to change His mind. We see that Jesus and His apostles have moved towards pagan territory in the northern part of the country, close to modern day Lebanon. A woman from

the district approaches Jesus, crying out loudly. She is described as a Canaanite which means that she would have been regarded by the Jews as a pagan, an outsider, ritually unclean. Yet she proves to be one of the most attractive characters in today’s Gospel. Her anxious cries are not for herself but for her little daughter who is sick. She might have heard of Jesus’ ability to cure the sick and wonders if He might be able to help her daughter. She is determined to find this out. Her efforts meet with apparent rebuff on the part of Jesus with no response from Him; just a stony silence. But this doesn’t stop her from crying out to Him for His help. We see in the end that the apostles become very annoyed, to the point that they beg Jesus to give her what she wants. But Jesus explains that for the moment, His mission is restricted to the Jews, “the lost sheep of Israel.” But the expression He uses sounds insulting because, as He says, it’s not right to throw the children’s food to the house dogs. But Jesus’ words are far from putting this woman off; rather, His words seem to encourage her. We see that she is desperate for the cure of her daughter and she is already on her knees, alluding to what He has said to her, that even house dogs eat the left overs. We see how Jesus is now moved with her persistence, her love for her daughter, her sense of humor but, most especially, her faith, her conviction that Jesus could and would help her. If He initially had meant to concentrate His attention on the Jewish community, Jesus is so won over by this pagan woman that He sees that an exception is called for and so Jesus assures her that her child will recover. This incident today reads like a commentary on what happened in the early Church. The first Christians were all convert Jews and there was great uncertainty as to whether Gentiles could become Christians unless they were first prepared to become Jews. Only gradually, especially through the influence of St. Paul, did the Church come to see that her mission was to the whole of humanity. St. Paul never lost his love for his own people and he gladly called himself the Apostle of the Gentiles. It is evident in today’s second reading that he expresses the hope that his very success in bringing the Gentiles into the Church might lead some of his Jewish friends to embrace Christianity. In today’s world, many people find it difficult and hard to respect the other, the one who differs from them because of the color of their skin or the sound of their accent or the land of their birth or the religion to which they belong. There is no excuse for Jesus’ followers to ever lose sight of the fact that His love is for everyone: Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Hindus and Muslims, believers and non-believers, all are His alike. In fact, we are reminded that Jesus’ final words before He ascended into heaven were that the apostles go forth to all the nations. Each person is precious to Him. He died for all without exception. His Spirit is at work in all. Let us persevere in our faith as the wise and wonderful woman in today’s Gospel that we never lose sight of the fact that where human beings are concerned, there are no “house dogs,” rather, only beloved sons and daughters of God. Peace, Fr. Joe

Statement of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, on the Events of this Past Weekend, in Charlottesville, VA

The one and a half million Catholic men, women and children of the Archdiocese of Newark – people who trace their roots to every continent of the world and represent every race and ethnicity – view with horror the recent events in Charlottesville and condemn the racism and vicious rhetoric that contributed to this tragic moment in our nation’s history. We stand in prayer and soli-darity with all people of good will and we witness to our Christian calling to “love your enemies…that you may be children of your heavenly Father.” (Mt. 5:44-45)

In the wake of her daughter’s brutal death, the mother of Heather Heyer told reporters in Charlottesville that “hate cannot fix the world. Hate only creates more hate.” We join her in rejecting the brutality that killed her child, contributed to the deaths of two Virginia State Troopers and left dozens injured. While we denounce such violence, we also call for a thorough examination of racial bigotry and intolerance in the light of reason and love. “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed” (Jn 3:20). Dark words and deeds must be met with light and love.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA OFFERING BLANKET Several years ago, we introduced the “Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the deceased, or is offered for a

very special intention. On the 3rd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for their intentions at 7:00 P.M. During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will follow the 7:00 Saturday evening Italian Mass. If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you wish for the blanket (see form). Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always, the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows.
