Message from Yip Wing-sie, Music Director
What a Wonderful World!Hong Kong is a city known for its energy… and consequently, its noise level. Some people ask me whether being a musician, I am bothered by all the noise.I actually find the busy bustle and the noise endearing… because it shows methat Hong Kong is alive with vigour. I tell them therefore that I would notchoose to live anywhere else on earth – because Hong Kong is my home, andit represents a big part of my “wonderful world”.
Living in a busy commercial city like Hong Kong, we often tend to associatethe word “wonderful” with direct experiences associated with “commodities”such as a good meal or a nice concert. Food and music are indeed wonderful –and I am not suggesting that they should not be associated with the word. However, I believe that we should go beyond just acknowledging the feeling ofa good night out, and expand our horizons to be more aware of more subtlethings that form the impression of our “wonderful world”. Everyone’s“wonderful world” is different – in content and in proportion.
Throughout Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s 2011/2012 season, I have prepared aprogramme on a loose theme on things that may make up your “wonderfulworld” – some may not be “wonderful” at first sight, or others which you mayhave missed because you had been too busy. Through music and other artforms, we remind you of the bountiful world we live in – with starry skies andshimmering seas; with dance and music; and the abundant opportunitiesaround us… only when we are able to appreciate the world we live in – willwe be able to create a “wonderful world” for ourselves and for thegenerations to come.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta is your orchestra! Let us lead you into our colourfulworld of possibilities and perspectives – a wonderful world which is allencompassing – for everyone!
Hong Kong Sinfonietta – investing in a WONDERFUL WORLD!

Hong Kong Sinfonietta is a mid-size symphony orchestra made up of56 core musicians. Starting life in 1990 as a group formed by localmusicians, Yip Wing-sie took over its artistic direction as MusicDirector since 2002. Recognising the need for an additional orchestra,Hong Kong Sinfonietta became one of the regularly-funded performingarts groups in 1999. 12 years on, the orchestra performs almost 100times a year and is one of the most prolific providers of classical musicin Hong Kong.
As venue partner of the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, Hong KongSinfonietta performs there most regularly, but also provides music foropera and ballet. Apart from concerts which feature standard classicalrepertoire, Hong Kong Sinfonietta is known as the orchestra which hasthe promotion of classical music as its core mission. From artisticprogramming to the thinking behind the orchestra’s management, webelieve that “Audience Development” should not be done in anorthodox way, nor should it involve “lecturing”. We believe thatthrough innovation and interaction, classical music, whether they arenew commissioned works or popular classics, can be equallyinteresting. Always challenging the boundaries and parameters of“acceptance”, Hong Kong Sinfonietta breaks through barriers andgrasps the importance of communicating with the audience. Comeand make classical music a part of your wonderful world!

Following our successful collaboration in A Soldier’s Story, choreographer/stage director Yuri Ng joins Hong KongSinfonietta this season as our new Artist Associate. He will create a new work for Ravel’s La Valse and work with theorchestra in Know Your Ballet Music. He will also work with members of the orchestra and staff during the year onvarious projects involving general health and well-being.
The Artist Associate Scheme aims to provide a platform for intensive collaboration with an individual artist or groupduring the course of the season, when new ideas and initiatives are explored to expand beyond the horizon ofclassical music.
First launched in 2006, a diverse range of artists have since participated in the scheme: composer ofclassical/jazz/pop/Chinese music Ng Cheuk-yin, Grainger Quartet, composer/multi-media artist Samson Young, conductor Jason Lai and pianist Colleen Lee. We are proud that these artists have since continued to become pillarfigures in their respective fields. We continue to work with them in different projects and one of the mostunexpected results is that James Cuddeford of Grainger Quartet has now become our Concertmaster!

WHAT ELSE…Where is Hong Kong Sinfonietta this week?
2010ArtisTree www.HKSL.org
In 2010, Hong Kong Sinfonietta embarked on a new initiative – mostly under the One-Hour Classics series – to bring good music tothe people of Hong Kong at unconventional times or venues, or in unusual formats. Apart from performances in the Appreciate,Learn and Relax series on the concert stage, you may find the orchestra performing chamber music during lunch hours in the foyerof Hong Kong City Hall or other unexpected venues, or working with multimedia artists at ArtisTree.
Visit www.HKSL.org from time to time to get updates. Meanwhile, check out the following listings for a first glimpse of thesespecial performances.
