How to Use Punctuation

1.Period ( . ) 1. ใชเมอจบประโยคในประโยคบอกเลาหรอประโยคค าสง เชน • I saw the boy.

• Let's go to the shop.

• Give me the pen please.

2. ใชหลงอกษรยอตางๆหรอค ายอ เชน

• Dr. = Doctor, adv. = adverb

• U.S.A. = United States of America

• We usually have breakfast at 7 a.m.

2.Comma ( , ) 1. ใชคนเพอแยกค านามซอน

Thailand, a country in Asia, is famous for

its beautiful temples.

2. ใชแยกระหวางค าทอยในกลมเดยวกน เชน

I want a car, a motorcycle, and a bicycle.

3. ใชแยกค าคณศพททบอกส

a blue, yellow bicycle

4. ใชแยกค าคณศพททตามหลงค านาม

The model is dark, tall and handsome.

5. คนขางหนาหรอขางหลงชอ เชน

• Christina, where have you been?

• What would you like to eat, Pranee?

6. คนประโยคทตามหลง Yes, No และ Well ทขนตนประโยค เชน Are you Thai? Yes, I am.

• Well, I'm not sure if I can do that.

7. ใชเพอแยกขอความในประโยคค าพด เชน

• He said, "They are happy."

8. คนระหวางป ทตามหลงเดอน, ถนนกบเมอง,เมองกบประเทศ เชน

Today is May 4th, 2000.

3. Semi-colon ( ; )

1.ใชคนประโยคทมเครองหมาย comma คนอยแลวเชน

Hello, Nittaya; Please come here.

2. ใชท าหนาทเพอเชอมประโยคสองประโยคทมเนอหาเกยวพนกน วางไวหนา adverb ไดแกค าวา

therefore(ดงนน) besides(นอกจากน) เปนตน

Canada is very cold; therefore people

must wear heavy coats in the winter.

4. Colon ( : )

1. ใช colon กอนการอธบายประโยค He decided to buy a car: he had to travel

to the remote area.

2. ใชแจงรายการ ซงนยมใชหลงค าเหลาน the following หรอ as follows เปนตน เชน

We require the following for our camping trip: tent, bags, and boots.

5. Question Mark ( ? ) ใชกบประโยคค าถาม เชน

Is that food hot?

What is your nationality?

Do you like durian?

How tall are you?

6. Exclamation Mark ( ! )

ใชหลงค าอทานหรอประโยคอทาน เชน

Oh! you are so beautiful.

Watch out!

Go away!

7. Apostrophe ( ' )

1. ใชแสดงความเปนเจาของของค านามทงนามเอกพจนและนามพหพจน เชน

The doctor's car

The men's club

2. ใชแสดงความเปนเจาของของค านามพหพจนทเตม s หรอชอเฉพาะทม s เชน

The girls' books / Charles' school

3. ใชกบค ายอหรอรปยอ

can't (cannot)

It's (it is)

I'd rather (I would rather)

8. Quotation Marks ( " " ) ใชเขยนครอมขอความทเปนประโยคค าพด เชน

He said, "I am going home."

"I can help you move," Narong volunteered

9. Hypen ( - ) ใชเพอเชอมค าสองค าใหเปนค าเดยวกนเชน

ex-husband

anti-American

two-day holiday

10. Dash ( -- )

ใชเพอเนนขอความทแทรกเขามาเพออธบายหรอใชคนค า

ละไวในฐานทเขาใจหรอเปลยนใหม เชน

I got lost, forgot my bag, and missed

my plane-- it was a terrible trip.

If I had a lot of money, I would –

Oh, what am I thinking?

I will never be rich.

11. Parenthesis (.........) เครองหมายวงเลบใชแยกสวนเพอใหสงเกตหรออธบายค าหลกใน

ประโยคขางหนาวงเลบ เชน

He (Columbus) discovered America.

12. Capital letter (อกษรตวใหญ)

ใชขนตนประโยคดวยอกษรตวใหญทตวแรก

She is studying in the library.
