ZFS uses a variable block size (0.5KB up to 1MB). Media files are typically multiple megabytes in size (e.g; 2K DPX files are ~12MB). Read a 12MB file in 1MB chunks is far more efficient.

ZFS has a large memory and a large cache. This means that any hot files are served from the fastest possible medium (DRAM). Weta Digital get over 96% of reads to their render farm served out of memory and cache.
