About

We  are  an  organisa+on  that  fosters  inspira+on  and  collabora+on  within  the  Cambridge  community.

In  the  Summer  of  2014,  a  friend  and  I  discovered  the  viral  photographic  blog  ‘Humans  of  New  York’.  ASer  weeks  of  sharing  and  browsing  its

contents,  we  decided  that  we’d  set  up  our  own  ‘Humans’  project  in  our  respecUve  UniversiUes.  So  we  did.

It  started  when  I  was  a  first  year  mathemaUcian  at  the  University  of  Cambridge.  A  year  has  passed,  and  we  have  matured,  made  progress  and  taken

steps  to  plan  ahead.  We  have  evolved.

Humans  of  Cambridge  is  now  divided  into  2  main  branches.  The  first  branch  is  the  original  blog  idea:  photographing  and  interviewing  people  around

Cambridge.  The  second  branch  is  a  web  applicaUon  that  allows  ideas  to  be  published  and  get  potenUal  sponsorship  within  the  University.  It  also

helps  people  with  skills  to  become  aware  of  the  hoXest  budding  projects  around  the  campus.

We  also  acUvely  host  our  own  events  or  sponsor  University-‐wide  events  in  order  to  keep  up  the  momentum,  all  in  the  spirit  of  sharing  ideas,

collaboraUng  and  embracing  the  diverse  skill  sets  Cambridge  possesses.  Our  beauUful  official  site 1  sums  up  all  of  this  up  very  nicely.

The Concept

Inspire.  Collaborate.  Do.

Cambridge  is  a  very  scaXered  community.  An  intelligent,  thriving,  but  scaXered,  community.  Humans  of  Cambridge  leverages  the  intelligence  we

have  here  to  help  the  community  thrive  more  than  ever.  We  do  so  via  2  main  projects.

i.  The  part  that  reminds  you  of  Humans  of  New  York

We  have  a  blog  of  portraits  of  random  individuals  around  Cambridge2.

Views  are  limited,  comments  are  virtually  non-‐existent,  and  the  quality  of  the  photos  are  not  that  impressive,  to  put  it  politely.  That  is  true.  We  have

a  million  excuses,  such  as  how  I,  the  founder,  failed  to  make  it  a  popular  idea  amongst  my  friends;  or  how  I  had  to  take  a  break  from  University  due

to  illness;  or  how  I  was  too  conscious  of  the  fact  that  people  wouldn’t  trust  a  small  Asian  girl  going  around  with  a  camera  in  town.  But  those  are  not

important  because  things  are  going  to  pick  up  the  coming  year,  and  I  have  a  plan.

We  have  made  a  list  of  16  potenUal  interviewees  who  we  will  contact  throughout  September  2014.  Upon  their  consent,  we  will  schedule  1  interview

per  week  to  get  our  blog  updated  at  least  once  a  week.  This  will  be  exactly  enough  for  the  two  examinaUon-‐free  terms  at  Cambridge.  Spontaneous

interviews  will  be  treated  as  an  extra  entry  to  our  blog.  In  this  way,  the  blog  updates  at  regular  intervals  without  pu`ng  extra  pressure  on  our

studies.

The  potenUal  interviewees  include  students  listed  on  the  ‘16  most  impressive  students  in  Cambridge’  publicaUon.  These  will  make  each  weekly  post

exciUng,  inspiring  and  easy  to  publicize.

We  will  also  encourage  our  photographers  to  submit  their  best  works  by  indicaUng  on  each  post  the  name  of  the  photographer.  Soon,  our  page  will

be  filled  with  beauUful  portraits.

Or  even  more  so,  Behance.  In  any  case,  the  other  part  of  my  plan  includes  our  new  branch,  a  site3  powered  by  Wordpress  that  connects  skills  with

ideas.  As  you’ve  probably  guessed,  this  site  is  not  the  newest  idea  on  the  planet  but  as  far  as  I  know,  it  is  in  Cambridge  and  we  need  it.  We  currently

have  a  rough  prototype,  so  content  is  limited  and  should  be  treated  as  examples  rather  than  actual  posts.  It  will  soon  be  updated  to  a  mulU-‐user  site.

Our  site  allows  people  to  publicize  and  browse  skills  and  ideas.

.  The  IdeasContent  is  flexible.  Posts  could  be  about  your  personal  project,  a  University-‐wide  event  or  just  a  random  thought.

It  is  also  called  ‘OpportuniUes’  in  our  site  because  those  with  skills  can  browse  through  these  projects  and  get  involved.

..  The  skillsWe  have  a  category  for  personal  profiles.  In  honor  of  our  starUng  point,  the  structure  of  our  profiles  will  model  that  of  a  post  on  Humans  of  New

York.  So  each  profile  contains:

>  a  portrait

>  your  personal  moXo/quote

>  1-‐3  professional  links

>  1-‐3  skills

This  simplisUc  model  allows  one’s  skill  set  to  be  presented  in  the  cleanest  and  brought  across  in  the  most  effecUve  way.

StarUng  from  this  month  onwards,  the  content,  post  style  and  security  system  will  be  formalized.

‘Take  a  Break’  Entertainment  Night

On  the  night  of  April  26th  2014,  a  group  of  just  under  100  people  sat,  stood,  ate,  drank,  chaXed  and  laughed  in  the  colourfully  but  soothingly  lit  Blue

Room  of  the  Cambridge  Union  Society.  It  was  an  Entertainment  Night  I  organised  under  the  name  HoC.

People  come  together  and,  inevitably,  inspire.  That  night,  the  performers  shared  their  talents  and  inspired  the  audience;  the  audience  interacted  and

shared  their  ideas,  inspiring  each  other.  I  was  inspired.  HoC  should  never  have  been  an  imitaUon  or  a  personally  moUvated  project.  It  should  be

universal.

Now,  HoC  has  adapted  Stanton’s  brilliant  idea  to  the  lifestyle  in  Cambridge.  We  host  events,  raise  funds  and  schedule  interviews  with  some  of  the

world’s  finest  minds.  I’m  not  going  to  wait  for  the  day  I  walk  past  Stephen  Hawking  in  King’s  Parade.  It  might  never  happen.

2014 - 2015

In  the  2014  -‐  2015  academic  year,  we’ve  planned  a  Photo  booth  and  a  Fashion  Show  photo  shoot,  both  of  which  will  help  our  society  grow.

a.  The  Freshers’  Fair  Photo  Booth

The  2014  October  Freshers’  Fair  is  going  to  be  another  great  opportunity  to  reach  out  to  more  parts  of  Cambridge  as  HoC.

We  plan  to  set  up  a  selfie  booth  at  the  fair,  where  we  let  people  take  selfies  using  a  camera  provided  in  exchange  for  an  anecdote  or  quote.  The

booth  is  free  and  selected  photos  will  be  posted  on  our  Facebook  Page,  unless  the  subjects  do  not  want  to  disclose  their  photo  to  the  public.

b.  The  Cambridge  University  Fashion  Show  Photo  Shoot  (Feb  2015)

We  are  very  lucky  to  be  able  to  get  involved  in  the  University’s  first  ever  Charity  Fashion  Show.  For  this  project,  we  have  recruited  some  of  the  best

student  photographers  including  the  President  of  the  University  Photography  Society(Phocus).  Details  are  pending.

The Team

We  try  to  be  flexible  with  how  commiXed  a  collaborator  is  to  us.  To  lessen  the  sense  of  ‘obligaUon’,  we  are  happy  with  people  working  with  us  on  a

one-‐off  basis,  with  the  choice  of  staying  on  or  leaving.
