WELCOME

Dear Friends,

I’m very happy to welcome you to Huntington Beach! It’s my favorite

city and I’m sure it will soon be yours too.

This Visitors Guide will help you discover all that is fun,

interesting and special in Huntington Beach, including some things

that are well-known to locals but may be missed by visitors.

Things like the Java Point coffee bar in Huntington Surf & Sport,

where I like to stop on those mornings I’m heading out for a surf at

the Pier.

Things like the chicken tortilla soup at Avila’s El Ranchito on

Main Street – it’s one of my favorite meals.

And plenty of other places and things to do, whatever you’re

into – rock climbing, picnicking under a tree, getting pampered at a

spa – it’s all here!

As a pro surfer, I’ve been all over the world chasing my dream,

but I’m always happy to get back to my “home surf” and all the great

people and places in Huntington Beach.

I’m sure you’ll be happy you came here. Enjoy!

ON THE COVERWhen surfi ng star Kanoa Igarashi – pictured with another local surfer, Jaimie Heraver - isn’t chasing waves around the world, you’ll catch him paddling out here at his homebreak in Huntington Beach, where he’s been surfi ng since he was 3. At age 11, Kanoa scored a record 30 victories in the National Scholastic Surfi ng Association season. In 2012,

he won the Rip Curl Grom Search, then scored his fi rst pro win in the DNA Energy Drink Pro Junior. In February 2015, he got his fi rst World Surfi ng League victory, taking the Hurley Australian Open of Surfi ng Junior. After almost a decade of top-level surfi ng all over the world, Kanoa says his favorite waves are still the ones that roll in on the South Side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

1. TAKE A LONG WALK ON A LONG PIER.

Stroll down the 1,850-foot Huntington

Beach Pier and you can get a great view of

the volleyball action on the beach or the

surfing action in the waves. On your way

down the Pier, you can also stop in at the

Surf City Store for souvenirs or Let’s Go

Fishing for rod, reel and bait for fishing off

the Pier (no license required). When you

reach the end, you can reward yourself

with a burger and shake at Ruby’s Surf City

Diner while taking in the spectacular views

in every direction.

2. CRUISE THE OCEAN STRAND.

The paved boardwalk that stretches along

the city’s entire 10-mile beachfront is

great for a stroll and people watching.

But you don’t have to walk - running and

skateboarding are also popular ways

to go. If those seem a bit energetic,

concessionaires on both sides of the Pier

offer bikes and pedal surreys for rent, you

can hail a pedicab, or go electric with a

rental from Surf City Segway or Pedego

Electric Bikes.

3. MAKE S’MORES.

With more than 500 concrete fire rings,

Huntington Beach is a mecca for folks who

enjoy an afternoon beach barbecue or

snuggling up next to a warm beach bonfire

at night. Either way, making s’mores is a

California tradition – toast a marshmallow

in the fire and sandwich it with a piece of

Hershey’s chocolate between two graham

crackers. It doesn’t get any better! Some

beachfront concessionaires even offer

“beach butler” services that start and

maintain your fire as well as provide beach

chairs, blankets and s’more fixings.

BEACHES

4. EAT SOME STRIPS.

At least three generations of HB locals

have been raised on the long thin tortilla

strips with cheese and sauce, made

famous by Dwight’s, located on the beach

south of the Pier. Other concessionaires

such as Jack’s and Zack’s also offer menus

of burgers, fries, tacos, and falafels to keep

the beach fun going all day.

5. VOLLEY.

Beach volleyball courts line the sand

by the Pier and on State Beach, attract

players of all ages and skill levels, from

pros to first-timers. Nets are free and

balls are available for rent at the beach

concessionaires.

6. THROW THINGS.

Whether it be footballs and Frisbees for

the people, or sticks and tennis balls for

the Dog Beach crowd, everyone enjoys

a game of catch or fetch on the beach,

especially when it involves running into the

surf to make the snag!

7. FLY A KITE.

The Kite Connection on the Pier can set

you up with everything you need to make

that uplifting connection to the wind and

air via a kite string. Their kites range from

the basic to the amazing, in colors and

styles to suit just about everyone. Kite

Connection also offers kite building and

flying lessons!

8. LISTEN LIVE.

The amphitheater and stage on the north

side of the Pier is often used by the city

and private parties for live concerts. The

International Surfing Museum sponsors a

series of concerts throughout the summer.

See the calendar on page 10 for more.

9. SOAK UP RAYS.

No matter what beach activities keep you

busy, at some point you’re going to want

to just sit or lie down and enjoy the warm

sun, the sound of the waves and the gentle

sea breeze. A magazine or book and a

cooler with drinks and snacks are faithful

companions. Be sure to use sunscreen,

wear sunglasses and maybe a hat. Forget

something? Beach concessionaires can set

you up with whatever you need.

10. BLISS OUT.

For inner peace, there’s nothing like yoga

on the beach. Go on your own, or check

out the local outdoor yoga groups on

meetup.com.

HUNTINGTON BEACH HAS 10 MILES OF SHORE, all of it wide, sandy beach that’s

perfect for surfi ng, swimming, kite fl ying, beach volleyball, picnicking, watching a

sunset, or just laying out in the sun.

The surf and sand are continuous down the entire Surf City USA coast, but it is

divided into fi ve named beaches, each with its own amenities and character.

From north to south, they are:

SUNSET BEACH

Stretching from Anderson Street down to Warner Avenue, Sunset Beach is 1.5 miles

of sand with a park and playground just off the sand and shops and restaurants along

Pacifi c Coast Highway just beyond a seaside residential community.

BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH

Spanning 3 miles south from Warner Avenue, this section of beach features smaller

waves and shallow water that’s great for swimmers and beginning surfers.

DOG BEACH

Some 1.5 miles of paradise for the tail-wagging set and their people, Dog Beach runs

along the bluffs north of Goldenwest Street. Dogs are allowed off-leash to romp in the

waves and chase balls or sticks on the sand – a rarity along the Southern California

coast. It also features good surfi ng waves and great views from the blufftop above.

HUNTINGTON CITY BEACH

Surrounding the landmark Huntington Beach Pier, the city beach is where much of the

sunny action is – it’s the focal point of the Pier/Main Street visitor-serving area and the

site of many events, from concerts to surf contests.

HUNTINGTON STATE BEACH

This long stretch from Beach Boulevard to the Santa Ana River jetty is popular with

swimmers, bodyboarders and bodysurfers because surfi ng is restricted to certain

areas. It’s also a favorite surf-fi shing spot, and has hundreds of fi re rings for nighttime

beach bonfi res.

BREAKING GOOD

For those surfers new to town or visiting, here is a list of my favorite surf spots here in Huntington Beach.

Bud’s Five Favorite HB Surf Spots:

1. NORTH SIDE OF THE PIER. Better with a south swell and

usually best in summer.

2. SOUTH SIDE OF THE PIER. Better with a north swell and in

winter.

3. 17TH STREET. Good waves, straight out from the shop!

4. HUNTINGTON STREET. Good waves down south from the Pier.

5. BEST FOR BEGINNERS: The Cliffs. The surf along the cliffs

north from Goldenwest Street is not as challenging as many other

spots, but still fun.

SURFING

For surfers like me, there’s no place like Huntington Beach. It has

everything: big wide beaches, great weather, great little restau-

rants and places to hang out, surf shops and shapers, all the other

surfers – and of course the waves. I’m lucky enough to have lived

here a long time, when I was a kid, competing as a pro and now

as the owner of 17th Street Boardshop, where I get to see my old

surfi ng buddies and help the younger generation of new surfers

with gear and surf lessons.

FOR A SWELL TIMEFormer pro surfer and

longtime local Bud Llamas

offers some advice to visiting

surfers.

First, you can check surf

conditions in Huntington Beach

at surfl ine.com or solspot.com

before going out. The sites will

let you know about current surf

and what’s predicted for the

day or weekend.

A good thing to check is

the direction of the swell, he

says. A straight north or south

swell will mean a strong side

current that makes surfi ng next

to the Pier a bit hazardous and

waves that tend to wall up and

crash all at once, rather than

peak and peel off for good long

rides. Northwest or southwest

swells are best, he says.

“You want that ‘west’ in

there,” he explains. “The ‘west’

makes the waves more peaky.”

BUD LLAMAS IS A FORMER PRO SURFER WHO HAS LIVED IN HUNTINGTON BEACH SINCE CHILDHOOD. HE WAS THE FIRST NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC SURFING ASSOCIATION CHAMPION IN THE 1970S, AND IS A WINNER OF THE BODY GLOVE GRAND PRIX. HE WAS AN INNOVATOR AND A PIONEER OF THE AERIAL ATTACK THAT NOW DOMINATES COMPETITIVE SURFING. LEFT, ON THE COVER OF SURFER MAGAZINE IN 1980, AND BELOW IN HIS SURF SHOP TODAY.

360: Swinging the nose of

the board in a full revolution

during a ride. Also, 180 (a

half-revolution, reversing

direction), 540 (one and a half

revolutions, also reversing

direction) and 720 (two

revolutions).

AIR: As in “getting air” –

when a surfer becomes briefly

airborne off the lip and comes

back down on the wave and

continues the ride.

BARREL: Formerly “tube”

– when a wave breaks so as to

form a hollow or tube in which

a surfer can ride with water on

both sides and overhead – a

peak surfing experience.

BOTTOM TURN: At the

beginning of a ride, a surfer will

go straight down the wave face

CALM WATERS

Huntington Harbour is a unique marine community within Huntington Beach. Situated north of Warner Avenue along the inland side of Pacific Coast Highway, near Sunset Beach, the Harbour is a nestled gem of marinas, docks, canals, waterfront homes, shops, and restaurants where visitors can enjoy an active yet quieter water environment.

Lights! Camera! Parade!

The Huntington Harbor Cruise of

Lights and Boat Parade are an annual

Christmas season tradition.

A fundraiser for the Huntington

Harbour Philharmonic Society, the

Cruise of Lights offers guided tours of

the Harbour’s festively decorated and

lighted waterfront homes. The tours

run from Dec. 17-23, 2015.

The Boat Parade features bedecked

boats in stately procession around the

Harbour, held on Dec. 12 and 13.

RIDE THE CURRENT. Duffy electric boats are

the perfect way to cruise the Harbour in style,

for landlubber and salty dog alike. Quiet as a

sailboat while still a reliable and maneuverable

power craft, Duffys have comfortable seating

for groups up to eight and tables perfect for

wine and cheese, or more elaborate catering.

Available at Huntington Harbour Boat Rentals

and Surf City Boat Rentals.

STAND-UP PADDLING. Stand up paddle-

boarding, or SUP, has gained popularity

in the past few years and there are several

places to rent the boards for a leisurely

“walk” on the water. Check out OEX Sunset

Beach, Huntington Harbor Boat Rentals and

Sunset Rentals. Learn to SUP like a pro from

professional surfer, Rocky McKinnon. And if you

want to push the envelope of serenity, you can

do yoga on the water with Pure SUP Yoga.

SIT-DOWN PADDLING. For those who prefer

to paddle from the seated position, kayaks and

paddleboats are available for rent at several

locations, including Huntington Harbor Boat

Rentals, Surf City Boat Rentals and OEX Sunset

Beach.

LET THE GUY IN THE STRIPED SHIRT PADDLE.

Sunset Gondola offers leisurely and romantic

trips around the scenic Harbour from 11 a.m. to

11 p.m. aboard authentic Venetian gondolas. The

most popular time is sunset, of course, but after

dark under the stars is another world. And yes,

the gondoliers sing.

ENJOY A WAVELESS BEACH. There are several

pocket beaches on the islands of Huntington

Harbour that offer sandy fun and wading or

swimming without the churning waves of the

ocean beaches. The beach on Davenport Island,

in particular, is known as Mother’s Beach and is

popular with families with small children.

With five manmade islands

and numerous channels,

Huntington Harbour was

developed in the 1960s at

a cost of $200 million. The

Huntington Harbour Yacht

Club opened in 1965.

NATURE’S WAY

ECO

The natural world is ever present in Huntington Beach. Not only is the world’s largest ocean lapping at the city’s 10 miles of coastline, but significant land habi-tats have also been preserved and restored throughout

the city. The highlight is the 1,000-plus acres of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, but there are also the 300-acre Huntington Central Park and smaller natural enclaves throughout the city.

Page 27: Huntington Beach 2015 | 2016 Official Visitors Guide

1. TAKE A HIKE. With more than 5 miles of trails, Bolsa Chica

offers plenty of back-to-nature space for bird watching, flower

smelling, running up your Fitbit count, or just peaceful strolling.

You can explore the mesa from the north parking lot at Pacific

Coast Highway and Warner Avenue, and the lowlands are

accessible from the south lot about a mile down PCH and across

from the entrance to the state beach. Bolsachica.org

2. GRAB YOUR CAMERA. A century ago, the Bolsa Chica Gun

Club that was located on the reserve severely limited the life

expectancy of ducks and other wildfowl in the vicinity. Nowadays,

the shooting is done with cameras, as bird watchers and

photographers flock to Bolsa Chica to capture the wildlife. Other

animals have been spotted along with butterflies, rabbits and the

occasional fox or coyote – and flowers of every color, in season.

3. LEARN FROM THE EXHIBITS. The Bolsa Chica Interpretive

Center at the north parking lot has coastal marine life, plus

interpretive panels on wetlands ecology, the history of Native

American and European settlement in the area, endangered

species, and habitat restoration.

4. GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY. For 15 years, the Bolsa Chica Stewards

have been working to restore native vegetation to the mesa. On the

first Sunday and third Saturday of each month, volunteers gather

from 9 a.m. to noon to plant, weed and water. All are welcome; meet

in the north parking lot. Bolsachicalandtrust.org

5. TAKE IN THE VIEW. The former site of the gun club, about a

15-minute walk from the north parking lot, is on the edge of the

mesa with a spectacular 270-degree view of the lowlands teeming

with birds, the Pacific stretching out to Catalina, and the coast up to

Los Angeles/Long Beach harbor and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A

great place for sunset watching.

FIVE WAYS TO ENJOY THE BOLSA CHICA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

Bolsa Chica, one of the last coastal wetlands in Southern Cali-

fornia, was at one time slated to become a marina with several

thousand homes. A 30-year community effort resulted instead

in its preservation as an open space reserve.

to educating the public about impacts on the environment, as well

as caring for and rehabilitating injured wildlife. Next to the Wildlife

Center is the Wetlands and Wildlife Museum and the Talbert Marsh,

a restored wetland that stretches down to Brookhurst Street. Call for

information and tours 714-374-5587.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY GROVE. In Norma Gibbs Park, the Grove,

restored and replanted with milkweed and nectar-bearing flowers,

is a thriving wintering spot for Monarchs on their annual migration

between Mexico and the northern U.S. and Canada. Best in fall and

winter.

URBAN FOREST. Another restored native habitat in Huntington

Central Park near the City library, this 2.5-acre natural hideaway

There has always been a connection between surf

1. SUNSET GONDOLA RIDES

IN HUNTINGTON HARBOUR

Share a magical evening under the stars

with an authentic Venetian gondola

ride, complete with twinkling lights and

charming serenades, along the canals

of Huntington Harbor. Bring a bottle

of bubbly and a cheese plate (there’s a

Trader Joe’s nearby), and the gondoliers

will do the rest, from supplying ice

buckets, glasses, and blankets, to handling

the work, like popping bottles, rowing,

and even singing traditional Italian tunes.

Couples packages start at $80 for 40

minutes and peak at $170 for two hours.

Extras, like fl owers and chocolate-dipped

strawberries, are also available.

2. LONG WALKS ON THE BEACH

Huntington Beach sunsets are absolutely

stunning, and there’s no better way to

fully experience one than with your toes

in the sand, hand-in-hand with your

honey. Take your pick from the 10 miles of

uninterrupted coastline, or fi nd an empty

perch on the iconic Huntington Beach Pier.

Cap off the evening with a bonfi re at Bolsa

Chica State Beach or Huntington State

Beach.

FIVE ROMANTIC ADVENTURES IN HUNTINGTON BEACH

Maybe it’s the beauty of an endless summer, but love is always in the air in Huntington Beach. Perhaps that’s the reason why we’re one of the region’s most popular destinations for both romantic getaways and seaside nuptials. Everywhere you turn, there are romantic things to do with your sweetheart. H ere are a few of our favorites, plus the best spots to tie the knot and celebrate in style afterward.

3. DINNER AT SEALEGS WINE BAR

This award-winning Hamptons style

wine bar is a true Huntington Beach

gem, serving up inventive coastal fare

by Executive Chef Alexander Dale and

pouring carefully curated vintage boutique

wine and local craft beer. Opt for a seat in

the plush nautical lounge toward the ship’s

bow and get cozy with shared plates,

candlelit tables, and glowing chandeliers.

4. PICNIC IN HUNTINGTON

BEACH CENTRAL PARK

While we’re all about the beach here

in Surf City USA, the city is also home

to about 70 parks—the largest (in all of

Orange County) and most lush being

the 350-acre Central Park. Pack a picnic,

grab a blanket, and lay out your spread

along Huntington Lake or Talbert Lake.

We recommend parking at the Huntington

Beach Central Library (7111 Talbert

Avenue) and strolling down to Talbert

Lake. If it’s a bench you fancy, head to the

picnic shelter on the west side of the park

off of Edwards Street, between Inlet Street

and Central Park Drive.

5. COUPLES MASSAGE AT

PACIFIC WATERS SPA

Leave it to the Hyatt Regency Huntington

Beach Resort & Spa to create a tranquil,

elegant, Mediterranean retreat from life’s

every day stresses. The “Connection”

couples package begins with a 30-minute

shared soak in your choice of salt or tea

bath, followed by a 50-minute Swedish

couples massage. Or go more simple,

with the Day Spa pass, which grants you

serenity in the luxurious sauna and steam

room, private whirlpools, and outdoor

relaxation areas.

5 DOGGIE DELIGHTS

PET FRIENDLY

There’s no need to leave your furry canine friends at home when you come to Huntington Beach. Here are five reasons the city is “Dogtown USA” and the top vacation destination for canine travelers.

1. DOG BEACH. Stretching

north from 21st Street along

the strand long known as The

Cliffs, Huntington Beach’s dog

beach is a water wonderland

for your four-legged family

members. Dogs can run off-

leash, chasing balls, sticks

or each other, sometimes

bounding into the surf. Bring

towels, because your pet will

end up wet and sandy – and

very, very happy.

2. DOG PARK. On the edge

of Huntington Central Park at

Edwards Street and Talbert

Avenue, the city’s dog park

is actually two-in-one, with

separate small and large dog

runs. The rest of the park is a

great venue for a leashed walk

among the trees – great for the

body and mind of both pets

and owners. Weekdays 9 a.m.-7

p.m.; Weekends 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

3. DOGGIE DINING. The Park

Bench Café on Goldenwest

Street offers the best in canine

cuisine, along with lots of

great food options for their

humans. Seating is available

outside at picnic tables on the

grass of Huntington Central

Park and dogs are not just

allowed here, they have their

own menu, along with bowls

of complimentary water.

Meanwhile, at PCH and Main

Street, Fred’s Mexican Café

invites dogs and their owners

to drop in on Mondays for

Doggie Date Night, when

they offer a free dog meal

with the purchase of a human

lunch or dinner entrée. And

the Paws at the Coffee Mill

in Old World Village offers

not just hospitality but sport,

with dachshund races every

month, increasing to every

Sunday during Oktoberfest in

September and October.

4. SURF CITY SURF DOG

CONTEST. Dogs of all breeds

and sizes hang twenty while

they show off their chops as

wave riders in this unique surf

contest, held each September.

The weekend-long event also

includes a canine fashion show

and other doggie delights.

Surfcitysurfdog.com

5. DOGGIE BED DEALS.

Several local hotels offer

dog-friendly accommodations.

The Waterfront Beach Resort

has an “It’s a Wonderful Dog’s

Life” package that includes an

in-room dog bed and other

amenities. The Shorebreak

takes pets for no extra fee.

The Hyatt Regency and

Extended Stay America also

welcome four-legged guests

as do several other Huntington

Beach hotels.

Huntington Beach topped Dog Fancy magazine’s

“Dogtown USA” list in 2009 and 2013 and was

among the Top 3 several other years.

Wave riders like to get an early morning start. Grab your board and

wetsuit at sunrise and head down to North Side, 20th Street, Bolsa

Chica, or wherever you see nice peaks. Everyone else, go ahead and

sleep in.

For breakfast, head to the Sugar Shack on Main Street - a legend

among locals and surfers from throughout the world who have

flocked to HB over the years, “The Shack,” as it is universally known,

has served up family-style home cooking for more than 40 years.

This is where the locals start their day.

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the beach! Grab your towel and

sunscreen and find a spot on the sand. You can get your blood

moving with a bike, surrey or Surf City Segway ride along the

Ocean Strand, or hit the volleyball courts for a fun workout. Come

back for a dip in the ocean before lunch.

At lunchtime, take a stroll down the Pier to Ruby’s Surf City Diner

riding high over the Pacific Ocean at the end of the stretch. Along

the way, enjoy the people-watching and check out the daily catch

from local fishermen. Once at Ruby’s, you can pick from a wide

menu of American classics and dine with a great view. On the way

back, stop at the Kite Connection and get yourself a flyer for later.

After lunch, head back to your towel and umbrella to digest for a

while. You can read, make sandcastles, skimboard, toss a Frisbee,

go in the water, or just lay out and soak up some rays. Naps are

allowed, and even encouraged. Relaxation is the name of the game!

When the breeze comes up in mid-afternoon, it’s time to break out

your kite. Be sure to stake out a fire ring for later. If you need an

afternoon pick me up, grab some famous cheese strips at Jack’s,

Dwight’s or Zack’s.

As the sun starts to dip towards Catalina, it’s time to start the

bonfire in the fire ring. Roast hot dogs over the fire and break

out the chips and sodas. For dessert, s’mores are the only option.

Conversation, night strolls on the beach, snuggling up in a blanket,

and campfire songs as the stars begin painting the sky are all good

options for closing out your perfect beach day.

To start your off-the-beach day, head to Sunset Beach where

the Harbor House Café has been serving customers since 1939

and is a hands-down favorite of locals and visitors alike. The

omelets are huge, delicious and reasonably priced – and did

we mention they have 25 varieties on the menu?

From there, head over to the Pacific Waters Spa at the Hyatt

Regency for one of its luxurious massage treatments. A

perfect way to align your body and mind for the day ahead.

You can also stroll the lushly landscaped hotel grounds.

Having pampered your body, feed your soul with a peaceful

nature walk in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve. Or

head downtown and sample the city’s rich history at the

International Surfing Museum.

Then cruise PCH back up to Sunset Beach and dine al fresco

on the patio at Pelican Isle, with a view of the laid-back

goings-on in Huntington Harbour.

Grab a coffee at AOSA in Huntington Harbour, a full organic

coffee shop that offers Stumptown Coffee Roasters and

Kombucha on tap.

For the afternoon, a cross-town trip takes you to the stores,

shops and kiosks of Bella Terra, the bustling shopping mecca

where you can window shop, people watch and find just

what you’re looking for in clothes and accessories, jewelry,

electronics or gifts.

For dinner, take advantage of one of the dining opportunities

at Bella Terra. Choose from Kabuki, Luna Grill, King’s Fish

House, Solita, Eureka!, Bondi Grill or any of a dozen other

eateries.

After dinner, check out the live music and finish with a

nightcap at Perq’s, Nadine’s Irish Mist or Fitzgerald’s, the live

comedy at Gallagher’s, or the Polynesian show or karaoke at

Don the Beachcomber.

Bruxie, located Downtown on 5th Street, is known for its savory

waffl e sandwiches, but they also offer a delightful breakfast

menu. Your youngsters can start the day with the PB&J, Green

Eggs and Cheddar, or several other waffl e delights.

After breakfast, head up Goldenwest Street for a trail ride at

Horse Play Rentals in the Huntington Central Park Equestrian

Center. The guided walk-only group rides wind through the hills

overlooking the park. Kids must be 8 or older to ride. For kids of

all ages in the summer months, Adventure Playground lets the

kids get nice and dirty with a lake, rope bridge, wood, mud slide,

and plenty of room to run. Bring towels and a change of clothes.

Kathy May’s Lakeview Café in Huntington Central Park is indeed

lakeside and a fun place for lunch. The lake is great for launching

leaf boats and stick rafts and it’s home to ducks and geese

that you can feed with packets of bird food offered by Kathy

May. A play area with slides and swings is a few yards from the

restaurant in the park.

OK, now it’s time to get moving! Head to the beach for some

skimboarding, body boarding, Frisbee tossing, volleyball, or

just general cavorting in the surf. Or exercise your creativity

by building a sandcastle. Alternatively, if your kids are into

skateboarding, the Vans Off the Wall Skate Park on the north

end of town has rails, bowls, and stairs galore!

Featuring laser tag, a miniature bowling alley, and a game arcade

along with a full-service restaurant, FuZion is the perfect place

to have dinner and a fi nal burst of energy-burning fun before

heading back for bedtime and the end of your perfect day with

The Perfect Nature DayCelebrate nature in Huntington Beach with a day spent in the great outdoors.

Morning: Take a morning stroll or bike ride along the boardwalk

or up the Santa Ana River Trail, which has a trailhead off the

Huntington State Beach parking lot at Brookhurst Street and

Pacific Coast Highway. Then explore Huntington Central Park,

which includes the Shipley Nature Center and an urban forest.

Afternoon: You can eat lunch outside at one of the restaurants in

the park, such as Park Bench Café, or have a picnic in the shade

under a tree, then head down to the Bolsa Chica Ecological

Reserve for birdwatching and hiking on its 8 miles of trail. A

wetlands stopover on the Pacific Flyway, some 200 species of

birds have been sighted in the Bolsa Chica area.

Evening: Head back to the beach for a sunset swim and nighttime

walk along the shore beneath the moon and stars.

The Perfect Healthy DayFor the active and fitness-minded, there’s a wealth of healthy and invigorating activities available.

Morning: Start your day with surfing, a beach run, or yoga on

the beach or on a standup paddleboard in Huntington Harbour.

Then make your way to Banzai Bowls for one of their acai-and-

other-superfoods creations. A bike ride down the Ocean Strand

boardwalk to the river jetty and back prepares you for lunch.

Afternoon: Jan’s Health Bar for lunch – their avocado sandwich

is a local legend. Then down to Huntington Central Park for some

disc golf on one of the first courses ever created.

Evening: Dinner at Mother’s Market and Kitchen in Newland

Center, followed by a night walk along the beach - good for body,

mind and soul – before bedtime.

During a “red tide” (caused by a naturally occurring population explosion of harmless mi-

croscopic organisms in the ocean), the waves will take on a faint greenish glow at night, and

if you run your toes over the wet sand at the water’s edge, they will make a glowing trail.

A local favorite, Basilico’s

serves up authentic homemade

Italian food, “just like Mama

used to make.” Yes, there’s

spumoni and a meatball

sandwich on the menu, and

yes, you should try Lou’s

favorite: the penne with

sausage, mushrooms, and

sun-dried tomatoes, topped

with Alfredo sauce. Perfect for

a cozy, romantic dinner and

glass of wine.

Inside Lucci’s old-

Mangia Mangia is a

family-run restaurant serving

authentic Italian cuisine to

Huntington Beach since 1987.

You’ll find whatever dish

you’re craving on the diverse

lunch and dinner menus, and

we highly recommend the

baked Eggplant Sorrentina:

rolled eggplant stuffed with

ricotta cheese and spinach and

topped with mozzarella and

marinara. Save room for their

rum-soaked tiramisu.

Capone’s Cucina, with

Chef Dino at the kitchen’s

helm, elevates standard

Italian fare with plates like

parmesan encrusted New

Zealand rack of lamb, savory

cioppino, and milk-fed veal

scaloppine. Of course, pasta

staples also grace the lunch

and dinner lineups, including

housemade ravioli and

gnocchi and a “create your

own pasta” adventure. Sip

martinis, signature cocktails,

and after dinner drinks from

the extensive bar menu in a

romantic yet casual setting.

The go-to Italian joint on

Main Street, Cucina Alessa

prepares gourmet Italian

dishes like Burricotta, burratta

cheeses stuffed with ricotta

and sprinkled with Italian black

lava salt; Ravioli di Zucca,

homemade butternut squash

ravioli sautéed with butter and

brown sage; and the Funghi

Misti, wild mixed mushrooms,

fontina, and white truffle oil.

An appetizing experience for

playful palettes at breakfast,

lunch, and dinner.

Others well worth a visit

include Mona Lisa Cucina on

Adams Avenue, Baci on Beach

Warner Avenue, Sebastiani’s

both also on Warner, and

Mazara Trattoria on Beach.

Kids of all ages love Buca

across from Bella Terra –

there’s a table for four in the

kitchen, and if you have a large

group, ask for the Pope Room.

MEXICAN

A favorite among locals,

Mario’s Mexican Food Cantina

has everything you crave in an

authentic Mexican restaurant—

and they’ve had it for more

than 40 years. Epic portions,

combination platters, nachos,

burritos, quesadillas, mole,

and chili rellenos drowning

in sauce and cheese. Wash it

all down with a killer “create

your own” margarita from the

cantina, made with Mario’s

signature mix.

Las Barcas has been

serving authentic gourmet

Mexican fare to Huntington

Beach since 1987. Food is

prepared fresh daily and made-

to-order, from the Baja crispy

fish soft taco to the chile verde.

Little sister to SOL in

Newport Beach, Solita is

relatively new to the Mexican

culinary scene in Huntington

Beach, and we can’t get

enough of the Baja-inspired

bites. Snack on the grilled corn

elote and queso al forno before

digging in to one of more than

a dozen taco plates. Don’t

neglect your urge to try one

of the fruit-infused margaritas,

poured with house-made mix.

Great for lunch, dinner, and

must-see.

Obviously, at Egg Roll

King you must try the egg

rolls and pork egg rolls, but

the menu stretches on with

authentic Chinese favorites.

Simple decor, simply delicious.

Locals love the hand-

cut noodles at Lotus Chinese

Eatery, as well as the healthy

portions. The wonton soup and

orange chicken are must-tries.

Other fine Chinese dining

is available at Pei Wei Asian

Diner in Bella Terra, Great Wok

on Algonquin Street, and Wok

Experience on Warner Avenue.

HAWAIIAN

Famous for its frozen

“Rainbow” cocktail, Aloha Grill

is also a winner for its prime

perch at the corner of Main

Street and Olive Avenue. Great

for drinks, people-watching,

and authentic Hawaiian plates.

Search no more for those

Portuguese hole-less donuts,

popular in Hawaiian culture.

Dough Dough’s Hawaiian

Malasadas has them made-

from-scratch, deep-fried to

perfection, plain or stuffed

with flavored cream fillings.

You’ll also find authentic

comfort plates, like Loco Moco,

banana pancakes, and mac

salad, on the menu. Save room

for more dessert at adjoining

Hula Girls, who serve the best

authentic Hawaiian shave

ice in town, complete with

macadamia nut ice cream and

Dole whip. Extra bonus: Live

music on certain days.

Simply translated to “the

best” in Hawaiian,

No Ka Oi brings casual

Hawaiian dining to Main

Street for every meal. Feeling

sweet in the morning? Try

the Hawaiian French Toast,

prepared with authentic Kings

Hawaiian sweet bread.

Serving up plenty of

aloha, Da Hawaiian Kitchen

also treats guests to poke,

lomi-lomi salmon, and poi

flown in fresh from Hawaii.

You’ll also spot spam and

potato mac salad on the menu,

which are rare finds on the

mainland.

Poke lovers need not look

any further than family-run

North Shore Poke Co., located

on 5th Street, which serves up

custom poke bowls with all the

fixin’s—including incredible

housemade sauces. One bite

will transport you to the islands

and beyond. Try the poke

nachos, too.

Others offering great

food and aloha are L&L in

Newland Center, The Loft on

Warner Avenue and China

Bowl and Young Hawaiian

BBQ on Edinger Avenue.

Others offering great food

AMERICAN

Nothing is more American

than a hamburger, and nobody

makes burgers like 25 Degrees

downtown on Walnut Avenue.

They turn the fast-food staple

into sophisticated gourmet fare

with innovations like the No. 5

“Truffle Style,” made with truffle

oil, Dijon aioli, arugula and

smoked mozzarella.

If two blocks inland is

too far from the beach for

you, there are a pair of fine

restaurants on the boardwalk at

the base of the Pier – Sandy’s

and Duke’s. Sandy’s has all-

American favorites like Prime

Flat Iron Steak and BBQ Baby

Back Ribs, along with seafood

and dishes with a Hawaiian

touch. Also offering flavors of

In Huntington Harbor,

interpretations of American

comfort food. The appetizer

menu features five takes on

fries, including sweet potato

fries with bacon chive aioli.

The turkey sandwich includes

aromatic root vegetables, aged

cheddar and sage au jus. The

Winemaker Burger features a

cabernet reduction.

The venerable and

atmospheric Captain Jack’s

Prime Rib & Seafood in Sunset

Beach is renowned for its

king crab legs and kitschy

nautical décor. Owned by

the same family for decades

and celebrating it’s 50 year

anniversary in 2015, it has a

large and loyal local following.

Other restaurants offering

their variations on American

standards include Bomburger,

2nd Floor, Sugar Shack, and

Spark Woodfire Grill, all

downtown. Mama’s on 39 is on

Beach Boulevard, and Slater’s

50/50 offers burgers, bacon,

beer and sports a half-block

east of Beach on Adams

Avenue. Seafood fans will find

much to like at Fish Camp and

Brix, both in Sunset Beach, and

Slapfish in Newland Center on

Beach Boulevard.

HEALTH FOOD

Jan’s Health Bar sits a few

blocks back in the quieter

section of downtown Main

Street, offering a more zen

experience for diners. Cool

off with fresh juices and

smoothies and refuel with

nutritious sandwiches, salads,

soups, and protein bowls. It’s

a smart breakfast, lunch, or

early dinner stop for vegans,

vegetarians, and meat-eaters

alike.

Tucked back off Pacific

Coast Highway at Warner

Avenue, Secret Spot truly is

the quintessential Huntington

Beach treat joint. Tacos,

burritos, sandwiches, salads,

soups, fresh-squeezed juice—

the gang’s all here, folks.

A must-try for carnivores,

vegetarians, and vegans for

breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Try the Currito and ask for

extra housemade salsa with

your chips.

At VegiLicious, the

friendliest of owners, Akira

and Atsuko Nakao, cook and

serve their vegan Japanese

fare with organic ingredients

and lots of love. Their signature

50-ingredient curry is a must-

try, whether poured over a

generous mound of five-grain

rice or dripping off the grilled

meatless burger. Other lunch

and dinner treats include the

sweet corn chowder, pan-fried

tempeh plates, and salads

topped with their delicious

house-made garlic sesame

dressing.

Acai bowls aren’t hard

to come by in downtown

Huntington Beach, but if it’s

what you’re craving, Banzai

Bowls makes the best in town.

“Live life in the bowl” with your

choice of acai bowl, pitaya

bowl, or smoothie—many

sprinkled with granola and

coconut shreds.

Occupying the back

of Mother’s Market, the

vegetarian- and vegan-friendly

restaurant offers a unique and

healthy take on comfort food.

Here you’ll find breakfast,

lunch, and dinner plates suiting

any diet and lifestyle, ranging

from Mexican fare to chili

and cornbread. Build your

own meal if you please with

Mother’s all-time favorites.

BEACH BASICSBEACH SAFETY TIPS

The Huntington Beach Marine Safety

Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to

ensuring that Surf City’s beaches remain

accident-free. Here are safety tips

developed by the lifeguards in conjunction

with the US Lifesaving Association. For

more information, visit USLA.org.

Check on Conditions. Before entering the

water, ask lifeguards about conditions.

Never Swim Alone. Use the buddy system

so someone will always know where you

are.

Swim Sober! Alcohol increases the

potential for drowning by lowering body

temperature, encouraging risky behavior,

and impairing physical ability.

Know Your Skill Level. Don’t overestimate

your swimming ability, especially on rough

days. And stay ashore if you’re a non-

swimmer.

Don’t Panic in Rip Currents. Don’t try to

swim directly back to shore. Calm yourself,

then swim parallel to shore until the

current eases and you can return to the

beach.

Swim Near Staffed Lifeguard Towers. Our

lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much

safer if they know where you are.

Stay in Designated Areas. Portions of

the beach are set aside for swimming or

surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties

and piers too.

Do the Stingray Shuffle. Shuffle your feet

to scare away the occasional stingray.

Extend a Hand Out in front of you in

shallow breaking water when diving, body

surfing, or wiping out on a surfboard.

Don’t Dig Deep Holes. Deep holes can

cave in and create hazards for small

children, so refill any holes you dig.

Do Not Bring Glass to the Beach.

Remember, there are all sorts of bare feet.

LAST WORD

“It’s pretty easy to have a perfect day in Huntington Beach.

I usually start my morning taking my daughter to surf class at the south side of the Pier. Watching the kids surf, along with a brisk walk down the beach, is a good way to get going in the morning.

Then a short drive to the shop to shape a board and talk some shop usually works up an appetite for lunch. A stop

at Trader Joe’s or Mother’s Market for some healthy eats usually wraps up the afternoon.

Always hoping for that evening glass-off, a walk on the Pier followed by a sunset dinner with friends and family at Duke’s Restaurant pretty much
