Ground view

Basic measures and topics: Acoustics, representation, furnishings, lighting, climate-condition, atmosphere, blinds(camouflage),function, pollution, storage

Changes on campus should be subject to certain principles: Everything for a better interdisciplinary communication! Everything for better research and learning opportunities! Everything for a better perception to the outside. Optical improvements that will raise the well-being considerably. Simple visual enhancements, which do not cause high costs can always be made.

After the analysis of the campus findings are as follows: There is a need of more learning areas. quiet area There is a need of more relaxation areas. quiet area There is a need of more meeting areas for small groups. quiet area There is a need of more attractive communication zones. social space Representation zones should be upgraded social space

The introduction:

The campus should be understood as a living, changing, breathing entity. Again and again functions and thereby usage are changing. Therefore it is necessary to create a variable ambience that shows a red thread in its design-features. We need a master plan for the development of the interior design of the campus. With many design measures a restructuring of the campus is accompa-nied.

This is the analysis about Central Building, Raiffeisen Lecture Hall, Bertalanffy Foundation Building and Lab Building East and the concept for the design meas-ures in there re-shaping areas. But I also see massive problems in the new build house Lab Building West but this is an other part.

Each design concept is subject to the findings of theanalysis. (Monitoring, interviews, measurements.)The problems that exist on campus should be gradu-ally corrected. Key measures relate to the acoustics, illuminance and light moods, climatic conditions and of course the design. This is also very important to the external representation. How is the institution perceived as a place for research, living and working in an interna-tional comparison?

Functional areas are changing. Areas to be created increasingly are learning areas in conjunction with relaxation areas, larger social spaces and meeting areas for groups of 4 to 6 people. Representation zones are to be upgraded Certain measures can be started only after relocation to the newly built houses and facilities. For example, the changing of function in the existing canteen after resettlement into the restaurant building. Possibly, this space could be used for learning and relaxation and could be parallel adapted for meeting areas. How can rooms better be used and how can a pleasant atmosphere be created?

There are various design concepts that are also combinable. This is a challenging tightrope walk both visuallyaswellasfinancially.Redthreadforthedesignof public and semi-public areas on campus can be repetitive design features.

Red thread for the design of public and semi-public areas on campus can be repetitive design features. For example, it could mean the use of acoustic measures. On the one hand hung acoustic elements and on the other hand acoustic curtains, which can also run in the middle of space, provided they are movable. Another example, in which way we handle temporarily chang-ing areas and thus the functions of this areas. Sliding curtains can also be a solution in this case. A third example is a distinct massive planting in foyers, lobbies and partly in quiet areas. Privacy both for humans and for the architecture. Thus, these areas are more habitable, as well as much more representative. A fourth example is the integration of art. How do you deal with new ideas. What are the questions of researchers? New ideas can arise by changeable multimedia art installa-tions. A simple example are freely programmable LED lines of text on the campus, which can be monitored from the intranet. Works by the artist Jenny Holzer or my art installation in the foyer of “The Hotel am Domplatz” Linz can be mentioned as examples.

I explain this with possible projects on the campus:Project 1 - Lobby with airspace in foyer of house I06. Project 2 - Foyer of the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall I02. Project 3 - Common areas in research department I01.Project 4 - Foyer of the main house I01.Project 5 - Restaurant in the basement of I01.Projekt 6 - Bridge on the 3rd floor in I04.Projekt 7 - Upcycling - revision of existing old things.Projekt 8 - Adhesive films on glass walls.

Project 1 - The lobby in the foyer of the house I06. The topics acoustics, atmosphere, indoor environment (climate) and communication are existing here. Theactual communication center is abandoned. Individual conversations are held quietly in the small tea-kitchen. There is a constant draw. The pond-side porch is not working properly. The sounds from the lobby spread to allofficesanddisruptstheconcentrationwhileworking.

Project 2 - The foyer of the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall I02. The topics representation, lighting-atmosphere and staging. The atmosphere in this foyer is very serious. The lighting is dim. The design of the furniture is not up to date. You have the feeling of standing in an orphaned backyard.

Project 3 - The wide aisles in the research department ofthehouseI01on2ndand3rdfloor. There the problems of acoustics, lighting, blinds (camou-flage)andprivacyhavetobeimproved.Learningareas,

recreation- and meeting areas alternate here. However, they are neither acoustically nor optically separated. In addition, thelightingisinsufficient.Parallelactionsareinterfering with each other and thereby the intended cooperation is not here.

Project 5 - New furnishing in re-shaping areas. This con-cept should be a form of implementation the meaning of the learning campus at the University of Mannheim and isclassifiedas“classical”interiordesign.Consequently,it requires all work procedures from preliminary design, design, planning, calculation of costs, tender, implemen-tationandfinalcheck.ThefollowingseriesofpicturesisfromthefilmoftheLearningCampus.

Projekt 7 - Upcycling. Revision of existing old things. This requires a wide scope. D esign with the line of the furniture series of the company EDRA by brothers Gabbana - Design from the favelas. Table Baghdad, Brasilia table, sofa On The Rocks, etc .. Existing seat-ing of the institute can be altered by applications. The overall impression should be exhilarating and symbolize the creative spirit of the Institute. The applications should be perceived as such. The gray leather seating should become the bearer of the content. Everything should relate to the research topics and should be discursive. This concept is in its realization artistic and playful.

The analysis:

Itisafriendlyandbright-lookingroomatfirstimpression.After a longer stay you can see how problematic this area actually is. The lobby with the lateral staircase is the distributor through the entire building. Two opposite entrances open up the house from the outside. In the fourfloorsarefoursecuritydoorsthatopenandclosea bit noisy The porch with sliding doors in the existing setting is not working satisfactorily. There is a constant draft! Two major problems seem to exist in this area. First, there ispooracoustics.Soundsseem tobeamplified and on the upper floors you will be disturbed by talking in the foyer. Secondly, it is drafty in the foyer. In the winter months it becomes unbearable. Only due to the strong discipline of scientists they can live together in this building. One has to “sneak” through the corridors, just not to disturb anyone. Talking happens extremely suppressed. The environment does not seem tobebeneficialforacreativedevelopmentprocess.Thefeeling of being observed constantly is not ideal. The actual lobby with the seating is uncomfortable and does not invite you to linger. Due to the high armrest the gray leather cubes do not promote communication they are turned “inwards” and in this sense introverted. Open stimulatingconversationsareverydifficultinthislobbywhich is for me more an passage room. The kitchenette is hardly recognizable as such and has a rather brittle charm. The bar tables right next to the lower seating area strengthen the uncomfortable feeling. The planting is well intentioned but without effect, as the plants have no chance to develop. They have a climbing frame,

which stops at an altitude of about 1.6 m. In this way the plants remain always the same and are movable as mobile pieces of furniture in the room. Thus they lose attractiveness. There are not many events during the year in this lobby in which the screen the kitchen front is used. It does not seem to be necessary that the furnishing is essential to be mobile. It would not be a big problem when pieces of furniturearemoredifficulttotransport. The carpet is a currently necessary color spot.I observed a buffet and noticed, that the food and beverage delivery trucks were parked directly next to the sliding door. During the break of the lecture, the students gathered right in front of this buffet, which meant that the door was constantly open and it became even colder. For cold days an unpleasant condition.

The measures:

The measure to defuse the climate problem is to extend the way from one sliding door to the other, - in that way one door is always closed and the draft is eliminated. An additional advantage is a free standing noticeboard

which can be used on both sides.Anoticeboardismissingandshouldalsobefitted.Placefor it is in the side entrance of the stairwell or in the porch with the sliding doors.

The measures:

The foyer should become a Jungle. It is very bright but still extra light is needed for a good plant growth. The plantsneedfixed locations.Theexistingplant troughscan be maintained. The plant supports in the troughs shouldbeextended.Bybracingdown to the lastfloorwithsteelcables, theplantscanflourishandgrowoverthe entire foyer. Some of the plants can be pulled up to the top floor. The indoor climate will be significantly improved. This lobby will be a lounge with plenty of privacyonthegroundfloor.

The gray armchairs should either be replaced or mixed with other chairs without side back so that communica-tion is possible. One or two sofas would be nice for this area.

The measures:

The parapet wall from the kitchenette should become the bar. Front elevation and counter can be seen as a bar. The rear wall behind it becomes the kitchen- or bar-rear-wall. The waste system, the vending machines and parts of the dishes and glasses should be integrated into it. With that the wall changes to create an attractive sight. Barstools can be placed in front of the bar and thus convey a communicative character. The bar tables in front of it should be removed.

As acoustic measures foam objects or sails could be hung in the airspace. These objects can be seen as applied art and can take up topics of research. Thus, the air space is stimulating. Discussions and interdis-ciplinary exchange of ideas can be promoted by such measures.

The analysis:

In spite of the continuous glass facade in the two-storied foyer a problem with the lightning exists. Firstly through the roof outside and secondly due to the low height of the glass surface the lobby seems much too dark and thus repelling. This situation is intensified by the side entrance to the building. The foyer is perceived as a widercorridorandalthoughthereisthesameflooringinthe inner- and outer zones the generosity of architecture cannot be perceived. The skylights cannot compensate the lackof light.Theblackstonefloor iswithoutprob-lems outside but inside it is an absolute “light eater” and because of its rough surface impossible to keep clean.

The gray concrete of the “building art installation” acts as a “light eater”. The staircase between wall and lec-turehallshowsasignificanterror.Theforemoststepisinside the room and becomes a tripping hazard.

The foyer encloses the auditorium also at the side. This space is much lower and extends over the entire length of the building to the “back”. Due to the lack of light, the effect of this area is very repelling, unfriendly, morbid, ...

The highlight in this area are the paintings on the wall, but they cannot compensate the lack of cosiness. On the ceiling there are only side lines of light. They should probably illuminate the walls. Without events this light is turned off and the gloomy sight of the auditorium becomes intensified. The opposite wall has two sidedoors. The main entrance to the auditorium cannot be seen from a distance. The impression of a dark backyard is reinforced.

Plants are something very beautiful and can revive architecture but in the foyer they act as a desperate attempt to keep up the spirit. We can create a positive impression with plants. For this we need a sufficient quantity.. Here they look like parked and forgotten garments. Plants are highly recommended. However we shouldgivethemadequateandclearlydefinedspace. At the rear of the auditorium are dark gray lounge chairs which strengthen the gloomy overall impression. The lecture hall itself is top notch. I have rarely seen such a successful implementation.

The measures:

The light: The most important intervention in the design of the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall is the change of light. It´s important to counteract the gloomy overall mood of the low range of the aula.A good way to improve the lighting effect are ceiling panel lights. Conventional luminous ceilings may have a too high construction and thereby a negative effect to the height of the ceiling. New developments in the LED range may be the solution. Light is movement, light is life. Darkness is lifelessness. In any case it is necessary to create bright areas. This is

the way to resolve the light problem of bad impression. Similar to lights at the Café Stern in Linz, this inter-vention could also be understood as an applied art in architecture. Due to the rather low ceiling height in lateral foyer down-lightsarenopossibility.Theblackfloorreflectslightonlytoa very small extent. Thus, it is important to counteract the unpleasant feeling with light irradiated areas. For example, the two extant artworks from the Maria Gugging artists should be illuminated at any time. Either there are bright irradiated surfaces or lights, as already described.

The measures:

The Plants: Plants need permanent positions and plants need light. The more plants are bundled in one area , the more structured and pleasant spaces are perceived. In this hall problem areas should be equipped with lots of plants and good lighting. Thus the positioning of plants and light is clear. The side wall of the lecture hall with its main entrance on the farthest wall section can be a highlight of the auditorium. The entire side wall to the hall should become a Jungle. The doors to the engineering room and to the toilet can be hidden. By the position of a very high growing plantthepitfallatthefirststepofthestaircasetothe1stfloorcanbesubstantiallydecreased.

The floor: Theblackcolourprobablyreflectslightonlyin an amount of 2 to 3 percent. A colored carpet can beenvisagedinthefieldofsittingaccommodationto lift the spirit. Again, there are some positive examples in the national and international architecture. The company Vorwerk has an art Edition of well-known artists. As examples I would like to mention carpets from Gerhard Richter, Coop Himmelblau, Jean Nouvel, Jeff Koons, Koloman Moser, Zaha Hadid, Richard Meier, ... and so on.

Common areas in the wide aisles in research in the 2nd and 3rd floor

The analysis and the measures:

These areas have different functions. Meeting places for 3 to 4 people, working zones for visitors and learning areas. The lighting in these zones is insufficient for apleasant atmosphere and there is no acoustic isolation. It isverydifficult tohaveparallelmeetings.Measures are: improving the acoustics, light and privacy for visitors and meeting groups.

FoyerI01

The analysis:

The function of the foyer has changed in recent years. With the new restaurant building the function will change again in the near future. Positive is the lighting which makes the foyer bright and friendly. But the alignment of the reception is solved unfortunately. The positioning of plants conveys a rather sad impression. A few pictures are hanging without relation to each other on the walls. The lobby has different zones: the entrance, reception, dining area, transport routes, vending machines, lounge, technique center, atm, billboard. These numerous func-tions contradict a room where you will feel comfortable. Lovelessness is the main theme here. Privacy is not possible and therefore it is not possible to be concen-trated at this location. The foyer serves as a distributor

for the entire building - Raiffeisen Lecture Hall, Mondi Corridor, Ballroom, elevator, staircase, restaurant and the bar are accessible from here.To change something in the foyer only makes sense after the opening of the restaurant building. A function that also will be available after the renovation is the temporary buffet area for events in the Lecture Hall with up to 200 people. This raises the question which function the foyer will take over in the future. After my previous observation of life on the campus, there is a lack of learning areas with different characteristics.

Project 4 The foyer of the main house

Page 31: I s t austria fürst

Project 4 The foyer of the main house

The measures:

The foyer should be rethought according to this film. The location between the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall and the Mondi Corridor and the size of the lobby is well cho-sen for a study area. Temporarily variable zones can be created by curved ceiling curtains. They are also a very goodsolutiontoobtainbetteracoustic.Theflexibilityofthe sections enable even larger events. Budget issues are often crucial for successful implementations. This can be achieved by using some already existing mobile furnishing-items on the campus. The Bene-berths in the Ballroom are suitable due to their outstanding acoustic

properties and could be located in the foyer. Even car-pets can improve the acoustics and make studying pos-sible. This space can be seen as a varied landscape.

Change in design and individual small areas create dif-ferent zones like learning areas, recreation space and communication-possibilities. The question whether this hall is also used for other events will be crucial for the type of furniture. Ceiling curtains for the creation of “pri-vacy zones” can always be implemented because they are easily changeable.

Restaurant in the basement

The analysis and measures:

To create a meaningful depth analysis and measures arising out of it, we should be thinking about the future function after moving the restaurant. After a meeting with Christine from the Works Council and after my previous observation of life on the campus, I suspect that there are too little learning areas with different characteristics and communication spaces on campus. To this topic a revealing video of the University of Mannheim exists - the campus TV movie about the new learning center.

A new perfect function of the space would be the library. The space is a dead end and sufficiently high. In addition, it is located right next to the terrace, which is very popular in the summer months. Reading outdoors is already practiced. From my perspective, a library belongs to the main building and should not be outsourced.

The analysis:

The main door into the building, which is also used as a guest-house, is much too small and also the wrong alignment of the reception make the entrance optically to a side door. The too small canopy to the main entrance reinforces this impression. The reception with the bar behind it was rebuilt recently and therefore the establishedstructuremakesaremodelingdifficultatthemoment. For a successful conversion not so many measures are necessary. The biggest problem may be the relocation ofthefirealarmsystem.Ithastobecheckedwhetheraminimal change of the position would be possible. Only onemeterwouldbesufficient.Abetterdelineationofthereception would also make the usability of the foyer in the coming years much better. A main entrance, where one runs against a wall, has to be avoided even with the most beautiful wall treatment.

The measures:

Similar to the Voestalpine Building it would be possible to stretch a sail in front of the main entrance. For architectural reasons, one might criticize the loss of the clear demarcation of the two buildings I01 and I02. The sidewise broadening of the glass cover in both directions would be simple and cost-effective. An extension covering all windows may be more construc-tive and the building gets an adequate entrance. The entrance into the building would be more spacious by relocating the back-office of the reception. This replacement represents only a small re-construction. The entire pub in the rear area with the dining room and the dishes-return-point will be untouched during the re-building. The emergency installations and constructional systems on the wall on the right side of the elevator are optically out of sight by the visitor. So they have a clearly assigned area which is not interfered by technical installations. The way to the elevator is still self-explanatory for the visitors. The problem with the coldness during the winter months can be achieved by a temporarily suspended heavy curtain hanging in thedoorway.A significant improve-ment of the reception for the staff represents the existing daylight and especially the wide view.

The analysis and the measures:

The lighting actually would be very good, but is often used incorrectly. The acoustics are very bad. The carpet may have been installed for acoustic reasons but it is counterproductive. It probably swallows too much sound. In lectures certain speech frequencies do not reach the back rows and a microphone is necessary. In order to make the right alterations a specialist planner fromthefieldofacousticsshouldbeconsulted. The working-berths are a well-intentioned method of making the room usable. However, they are at the wrong place and should be positioned in other areas on the campus. A better place for them appears the current foyer where there are also acoustic problems. It is possible to make this jewel to a high-tech room for meetings, lectures and TV events and therefore it should be restituted to its original function on campus. Instead of the working-berths stadium tribunes should be installed 30 till 50 centimeter from the walls. The result is a sector for viewers and listeners. Lively discussions can also take place in the presence of television. (A studio forTV recordings). There are examples of successfulrealizations. You can see them daily in TV-shows.

A special kind of experience: Another time I walked into the ballroom, wondering why the feeling in this beautiful room is so bad. The result was predictable. Apart from the poor acoustics, the lighting is catastrophic. I entered the room from the side of the Mondi Corner and turned the light on at the panel to the left of the entrance door. The name on the switch is cleaning light. It was a surprise that no more light should be available and I turned on the light measurements. From the middle of the room the light falloff is already below 30 Lux. In comparison, 50 Lux are required to iluminate a cellar. Somewhat irritated I left again the ballroom from the side of the Mondi Corridor. A buffet was set up as a very important donor of the Institute would have lunch in the Ballroom with our president Thomas Henzinger. They made a guided tour through the campus. They entered the room in this

gloomy light atmosphere. I came back with a professional light meter and checked my initial measurements half an hour later. Our leadership and the visitor were still sitting in the room with the same light atmosphere. After the guests had left the room, I checked the lights and found a lighting system with my colleague Catalin Mitru. The hall has an adequate lighting system, only it is not in use. In addition to the front door on the part of the Raiffeisen Lecture Hall is a control system. According to the needs the entire room can be changed. The lights on the walls include both the cleaning light and HQI headlamps that produce sufficient and pleasant light. They only must be used. It is necessary to instruct the staff how to use this High-Tech system. We have to learn how to deal with such products. It should be avoided, that the visitors unconsciously get “backwoods” impres-sions of the Institute.

The analysis and the measures:

These rooms have also very poor acoustics. The best course of action is probably an acoustic ceiling. The wall sections between the windows can be equipped with soft large-sized objects. Possibly large tapestries are sufficient.Thewallnexttothestairwayissuitableforalarge-scale artistic work. Above all this art should also have the function to improve the acoustics. In this sense it is applied art. The content which could be transported

with this art, is in this context, the coexistence and the multitude of nationalities. At the moment more than 50 nations live and work on the campus.Itmakesagreatfinancialdifferentifwemakeanacoustic ceiling or if we handle this problem in an artistic way. Acoustic ceilings cost about 100 to 120 € per square meter. I think to implement something meaningful, which also could be more creative, is much cheaper.

The analysis and measures:

There are major acoustic troubles in these areas. An acoustic ceiling does not exist and there are only hard surfaces. Carpets would reduce the problem, but the cleaning crew does not have vacuum cleaners and thus carpets would not get not cleaned. Therefore acoustic measures should be limited to the walls and the ceiling. It ismuchtoo loud in thecorridoroutsidetheofficeofProf. Bernd Bickel. A carpet would reduce the problem. I noticed that for a positive overall measure the opposite walloftheofficedoorshouldbeconsidered.Theofficedoes not have enough furniture and therefore the echo is always there. More furniture in this room will improve the acoustics. Tapestries in the indoor and outdoor area oftheofficewoulddefinitelybehelpful.

The narrow corridors in research

Page 41: I s t austria fürst

The analysis:

All public areas look deserted and convey a mood of unappealingbackyards.Onthe1stfloorthereisakitchen for the entire wing of the guest house. According to Wolfgang Erdhart it is used very often, but there are no adequate table areas and no suitable seating. The seating arrangement in the rear area is a poor stopgap-solution and contributes to the overall bad im-pression. The pool table is a highlight and often in use.

The measures:

Sufficiently large tables and appropriate sitting- accommodations should be provided. A demarcation of the lounge areas with carpeting would help to lift the spirits.Thegrayseatingofthefirstgenerationshouldberemovedor coveredwith coloredblankets (cushions).Floor lamps with direct and indirect lighting create an intimate atmosphere. Murals or wall tattoos could pose further positive measures and enhance the appearence.

Mondi Corridor

The analysis:

In the corridor there are gray powder-coated magnetic cuboids which serve as information kiosks. However, these cuboids are hardly used and they are narrowing the corridor a lot. The function of these columns should be discussed because at the moment they are almost exclusively used as blinds in the seminar rooms. Postersofvariousscientific topicsarehangingon thewalls. Temporary information about lectures and events do not need monstrous, metal Info squares. In this way emotions are frozen. The lighting in the corridor is very positive from a visual point of view. The lighting atmosphere could not be assessed. The lights in the seminar rooms provide perfect light for concentrated work. Christine from Works Council has noted that students complain however about rapid fatigue in these lecture rooms. In the rear area at the sanitary facilities a temporarily furniture store has been set up.

The measures:

To be able to take measures, various issues need to be resolved! How will this corridor be used? Which functions should it have? (Meeting points, standing areas with whiteboards, information boards, learning areas, reading areas, relaxation areas, active zones, exittotheyard). The magnetic cuboids should be removed and instead it would be much more effective to mount hinged and sliding panels on the walls. The walls change and bring life into the aisle. Similarly to the facade of the building I05 day after day, the impression changes by different open shutters. A quotation of Christine (Works Council) is to bring colour into the rooms. The illuminated ceiling in the main area to the terrace should always be turned on. Otherwise it makes a sad, bleak impression.

Page 43: I s t austria fürst

The analysis:

The library looks very repelling from the outside. A narrow passage was created through the installation of glass walls and the shelves placed on the glass are seen from the outside. The furniture seems to be casually used and look like found objects from shelves. Nothingfitstogether.Itseemsthattherewasnoconceptin planning. There are two types of seats. Grey leather cubes from the initial set-up in best quality and already worn,fabric-coveredsofas,whichdonotfulfillanyopticrequirements. But only these chairs are used because they are much more comfortable and usable than leather seats with high armrests. This area is particularly used as a learning zone and only secondly as library.

The measures:

In order to create an exhilarating, positive impression, silhouettes of book readers, standing and seated people should be applied. Thus, the function of the room is self-explanatory and the repellent glass front revived. The demand for books in the coming years should be clarifiedbeforewechangesomethinginside.Onlythenit makes sense to optimize the function.

The analysis:

The entrance is not clear enough. Visitors do not know where they are supposed to ring to get into the building.

I04 Entry outdoor area

The analysis:

At the moment is this area only a passage. The building is made accessible from opposite sides. It draws. On one side there is a small kitchen with a double sliding door. Asides an elevator. Obverse is a wall with stabled cartons. It is to examine whether the double sliding door of the small kitchen can be removed.

The measures:

Due to the almost complete lack of social areas for the purposes of communication areas this area should be rethought. Because of the available small space, only a standing area can be realized. By omitting the double sliding doors a much larger and thus more pleasant area for communication and exchange of ideas is possible to create. The different colors on the walls opposite the elevator is a good evaluation but it should be made much effectual.

I04 Foyer on the ground floor

The analysis and measures:

For various reasons this communication zone works very well. First, there is enough air to breathe, the room is bright and the colors of the seating add alternation. The bar creates its own communication area in the room.Thebridgeon the3rdfloorappearsasasmallrestaurant or a small bar. A positive, communicative

mood is conveyed. The Upholstery of chairs does not have the best quality but due to their colourfulness they contributesignificantlytothewell-being.Fortheserea-sons, it is not necessary to change anything in this area at the moment.

I04 Bridge 2nd floor

Page 45: I s t austria fürst

The analysis:

At the moment is this area a passage and the place for the copiers. Opposite the lift is a wall with stabled cartons. Sometimes there are copiers next stacked copy paper and several boxes. It has to be checked whether functions misses. For example if additional work tables for the follow-up of copies are required?

The measures:

A storage space for paper and toner should be build next to the copiers.A rectangular high table is used to store documents and or meetings. The different colors on the walls opposite the lift door are but an approach should be made much stronger.

The analysis:

The communication zone is located in a passage area and is partially used as a learning zone. Undisturbed learning is impossible. This area looks cool and aloof. One reason ist the glass meeting room with perma-nently sealed blinds. The zone is bright and has colored seating. However, this is not enough for a pleasant atmosphere.

The measures:

The most important measure for a pleasant sense of space in this passage zone is to defuse the sight of the glass walls. A „wall paneling“ should be mounted in front of the glass surfaces. This intervention is to act semi-transparent. You can still see the actual structure. One possibility is stretched ropes vertically and in different angels in front of the glass drey. It should create a grid-like structure. Another, essentially similar implementation is a wallcovering with the product “algae” from the company Vitra.

The analysis:

This requires a wide scope. Existing seating of the institute can be altered by applications. The gray leather seating should become the bearer of the content. The applications should be perceived as such. The overall impression should be exhilarating and symbolize the creative spirit of the Institute. This concept is in its realization artistic and playful.

One of the main threads:

A further example is the integration of art. How do you deal with new ideas. What are the questions of researchers? New ideas can arise by changeable multimedia art installations. A simple example are freely programmable LED lines of text on the campus, which can be monitored from the intranet. Works by the artist Jenny Holzer or my art-installation in the “Hotel am Domplatz” in Linz can be mentioned as examples. Another artists in this sense is Stefan Sagmeister and in some other aspects Andy Goldworthy.
