The standardization projects are supervised by the Standards Board. 650+ projects are currently opened. The Standards Board authorizes projects to start, approves IEEE Standards at the end of the projects and maintains the standardization process.During the project the technical content of standards is developed in Working Groups. Working Groups must follow the standardization process developed and maintained by the Standards Board (SASB).The Standards Board is organized in several sub committees for making the preparation work and proposing decisions to the Standards Board.

This is an overview of the IEEE Standards Development Process. Everything starts with an invention. Then the first step is to identify a Standards Committee. Next steps are:• Project approval (Responsibility of the Standards Board)• Develop a draft standard (Responsibility of the Working group)• SA ballot (Open to any SA member)• Standards Board approval (The SASB review that the standardization

process was applied)• Publish the StandardAfter publication a standard may be amended (to include new features for example) or revised (at least every 10 years).IEEE also can help for product certification with the ICAP programme.

HD-PLC technology went through the entire process and was standardized as IEEE 1901. HD-PLC was a new technology. IEEE 1901 was published in 2010. 1901a amendment for IoT was published in April 2019. A project of revision of 1901-2010 was started in May 2019.

Overview of IEEE 1901-2010

IEEE 1901-2010 proved high performance communications. Up to 240 Mbps throughput. It also includes the Inter-System Protocol (ISP) that enables coexistence of BPL systems operating on the same power lines by sharing resources in time and frequency.

In this example noise is higher at lower frequencies.IEEE 1901a allows to select the best frequency band to avoid noise and to communicate over distance:• If attenuation is an issue IEEE 1901a allows to select in low

frequencies.• If noise is an issue, select a channel in a quiet frequency
