If Clauses หรือ Conditional Sentences คือ ประโยคท่ีมีขอ้ความแสดงเงื่อนไข (conditions) หรือการสมมติ ซึง่ประกอบด้วยประโยคเล็ก 2 ประโยครวมกนั และเชือ่มด้วย conjunction "if" ประโยคท่ีนำาหน้าด้วย if แสดง

เงื่อนไข เราเรียกว่า if-clause และประโยคท่ีแสดงผลเงื่อนไขนั้น เราเรียกวา่ main clause

Conditional Sentences แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ชนิด คือ

• 1. TYPE ONE เป็นการสมมติถึงเหตกุารณ์ในปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต แสดงเงื่อนไขทีน่่าจะเป็นไปได้ (possible condition)

• If it rains , I shall stay at home. (If-clause) (main clause)

• If + Present Simple , Future Simple

(if-clause) (main clause)

• If + Present Simple, Imperative If he comes, tell me at once. (if-clause) (main clause)

2. TYPE TWO เป็นการสมมติในปัจจุบันท่ีบอกความสงสัย (doubt) แสดงเงื่อนไขท่ีไม่น่าจะเป็นไปได้ (impossible condition)

If + Past Simple , S + would + V1 (if-clause) (main clause)

If I were you , I would be happy.

If I had lot of money, I would buy a large news house.

If + Past Perfect , S+would/should + have +V3 (If- clause) (main clause)

If I had known your address, I would have written to you.

If I had known your arrival , I would

have met you at the airport.

If you had gone to party last night , you would have seen your girlfriend.
