Adverb ClausesAdverb Clause adalah anak kalimat yang berfungsi seperti Kata Keterangan (Adverbs), yaitu untuk menjelaskan Kata Kerja (Verbs).

Kalimat yang mengandung Adverb Clause adalah merupakan kalimat majemuk (Complex Sentence) dengan unsur-unsur yang terdiri dari:

1. Independent Clause = Induk kalimat

2. Dependent Clause = Anak kalimat3. Conjunction = Kata Penghubung

Jenis-jenis Adverbs Clause:

1. Adverbs Clause of Time (Ket. Waktu):

When = ketika While = selagi/pada saat Since = sejak

Before = sebelum After = setelahContoh:a. I was angry when he came back

b. I have been here since I was ten years old.c. I shall come before he comes.

2. Adverbs Clause of Place (Ket. Tempat):

Where = dimana/kemanaContoh:

a. I put the book where he could not find it.

b. The traveler went where the climate was very cold.

c. I did my work where there was no noise.

3. Adverbs Clause of Cause or Reason (Ket. Sebab/Alasan):

for = karena as = karena because = karena/sebab

Contoh:a. Enjoy yourself now for life is short.b. As it was late, I got up.c. I do not believe him because I know he is a liar.

4. Adverbs Clause of Purpose (Ket. Maksud/ Tujuan):

So that = supaya/ sehingga in order that = agar supaya

Contoh:

a. Men work so that they may be able to live.

b. I ran fast in order that I could catch the bus.

c. We will take extra money with us so that we don’t have to borrow from strangers.

5. Adverbs Clause of Result (Ket. Akibat/ Hasil):

So…that = begitu…sehingga Such…that = begitu…sehingga

Contoh:

a. He worked so hard that he felt ill.

b. He is such a polite boy that everyone likes him.

6. Adverbs Clause of Concession (Ket. Perkecualian):

Although = walaupun However = betapapun

Eventhough = walaupun whatever = apapun

Though = walaupuna. Although he is poor, he is honest.

b. However wide the river is, he can swim across it.

c. Whatever orders my father gives, I will obey him.

7. Adverbs Clause of Manner (Ket. Cara):

as = seperti as…as = se… as if/ as though = seolah-olah

Contoh:

a. He held his pen as his teacher told him.

b. He worked as hard as he could.

c. He behaved as if he were my master.

8. Adverbs Clause of Degree (Ket. Derajat/ Tingkat):

than = daripada as…as = se… so…as = begitu…seperti

Contoh:

a. I will get up as early as I can.

b. John is not so clever as early his sister is.

c. I am taller than my friend is.

9. Adverbs Clause of Condition (Ket. Syarat):

if = jika/kalau/ seandainya unless = jika tidak

Contoh:

a. If he comes, I shall see him.

If he came, I should see him.

If he had come, I should have seen him.

b. Unless he paid the money, I should be angry.

Unless you run fast, you will miss her.

Syarat: Subyek Adverbs Clause sama dengan subyek Kalimat Induknya.
