Marquis Converse was born in New Hampshire, USA in 1861. In 1887 he started a shoe company, but he left because he was ill. In 1908, nearly 50 years old, he started a company again. The company introduced All Star, the first basketball shoes in America, in 1917. Later, Converse hired Charles “Chuck” Taylor, a pioneer in sports marketing. Taylor made the All Star basketball shoes better and more competitive. In 1923 Taylor’s signature appeared on an ankle patch. The shoes were used by the United States Olympic team in 1930. The business was very successful, but it had problems, too. In 1931, Converse died of a heart attack on the streets of Boston.
