From Branch Counsellor’s desk
Dear Friends,
Warm Greetings from IEEE Student Branch LDRP-ITR. I present you all to the first issue of
our SB’s magazine “Innovative Bliss 2014” (Vol.1 Edition. 1). I would like to dedicate this
issue to the student volunteers who have worked really hard since last 2 months to bring
this issue of the magazine, to my fellow colleagues who have supported directly or
indirectly in all of our technical endeavors, the institute management which supported
timely help to the students in many-fold ways.
It is the efforts of all these people that we are able to maintain a positive technical
environment in our institute through various activities, events, magazines, volunteer work
for social cause. These efforts have helped our students to develop their technical,
professional, communicative as well as leadership, team building, strategic thinking and
also their overall self-development. Looking in retrospect, it is a small effort by the student
branch to make a positive impact on the society which is aligned with the mission of IEEE.
I urge my student members to explore new horizons of research and contribute to the
world of innovation. It is a world of Outcome Based Education, so we must define what
outcome we are expecting from every IEEE student member and professional and
accordingly we can design our action plan. Program specific criterion of IEEE for standard
curriculum and faculties can be explored published and implemented across the nation and
I am sure with all these activities we would be able to mark our presence not only in the
sectionwide community but across the nation.
This will make every one aware about standard and formal procedure of perusing research
and professional ethics as well. Use of social media sites, online research forum can be
joined and which can be created at branch level so that we can do networking across the
where in students can join and connect themselves to SIGs of their interest and contribute.
Once again I extend my best wishes to the student community of our branch as well as
institute at large, and wish them great success in all their new endeavors.

FROM CHAIRPERSON’S DESK
IEEE is the largest technical professional society in the world that focuses to foster
technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Participating actively
in IEEE program makes the student communicate with the professional dignitaries and also
helps him/her for the overall development. Members become aware about the technology
through various conferences, magazines, workshops and the prime of all being IEEE
website.
Being the Chairperson of SB, my prime focus will be to make the students of our institute
technically aware and help them build vast networks. In Engineering, only bookish
knowledge won’t make you reach at any position in life instead having a sound and
practical knowledge of the concepts will. Practical knowledge can be achieved through
various sources but the perfect platform for that is IEEE.
I will emphasize on making our student members participate actively in IEEE activities
which will lead to the technical awareness of society as well as the student members which
will result in the upliftment of the society. A small change can result into high output if done
perfectly.
I welcome you all to the IEEE Student Branch LDRP, Gujarat Section, India and hope you all
enjoy reading our SB’s magazine.
Happy Reading.
Thank You!

Hello readers,
IEEE WIE (Women In Engineering) is the largest international professional organization
dedicated to promoting women engineers and retention of women in the technology. With
this as our basic mission, WIE AG LDRP ITR was formed officially on 29th January 2014.
Informally, we have been active since past two years.
We believe in what WIE believes: Making women technically empowered. We envision a
vibrant society where there is no gender disparity and where both men and women work
together cordially striving for innovation and success.
By WIE initiative, we are trying to motivate and develop a feeling of self dependency and
confidence which would ultimately help in achieving higher goals. We aim at making girls
technically adept and confident in such a way that they could create a place for themselves.
Also this would help them in gaining practical knowledge required in the industries which
our current education system fails to provide.
Keeping in view of the above facts, we have organized various technical workshops,
seminars, competitions to give complete exposure to the women of the next generation. Our
magazine gives a brief insight of few of the events we have conducted in recent past. The
impact of women with a technical background is tremendous. It not only makes them
financially independent but also makes them socially empowered. Hence, our mission is
towards encouraging girls to undertake more technical activities, nourish and enhance the
knowledge by involving in more research related programs and provide more latitude for
innovation. And that day is not far when we all will enhance technology on humanitarian
grounds and say “YES, WIE DID IT!”
Best Wishes,
Anjali Jain
Chairperson
WIE-AG LDRP-ITR.

of intensive C, extensive java and arduino among the students.
The existence of the SB is not only till IEEE but it has also done remarkable work under
affinity group Women In Engineering (WIE). A one day celebration on women’s day with
the “Vanprastha Old age home” proved their love and respect for women. Also a noble deed
in the form of a blood donation camp was arranged in the college itself with selfless
intentions pure emotions. Two days workshop on Photoshop was also carried out for the
students interested in designing. SIG (Special Interest Group) has been a highlight in our list
of events. SIG on HTML and C++ were carried out by the students of our own college.

WOMEN’S DAY
CELEBRATIONS
-Suhani Mehta and Maitri Vaghela
Women’s day, a day to thank and
respect the women who in some or the
other way are involved in making us
independent in this world. And IEEE SB
LDRP-ITR and WIE has celebrated this
day every year with full zeal. In 2013,
the members visited the old age home
and in 2014, they visited a girl school in
village to inspire them to study further
and become strong and independent.
On 8th March 2013, WIE affinity group
in association with IEEE Student Branch
LDRP-ITR, celebrated the International
Women's Day by spending time with the
elderly of "Vanprastha Seva Samaj's
Jeevan Sandhya old age home",
Naranpura, Ahmedabad. About 25
volunteers of LDRP-ITR spent time with
191 members of the "Vruddhashram".
The visit saw games and other fun
activities for the elderly. In one of the
games, the volunteers played a tune and
the elderly were supposed to sing the
song, guess the movie the song was
from, the actor, the actress, the singers
and the music director associated with
the song. Another game was passing the
parcel.
The most thrilling part of the visit was
volunteers v/s elderly "Antakshri"
which saw the elderly reminiscing their
past and smiling at their happy
memories. Afterwards, Mr. Farsubhai
Kakkad thanked us, and then some of
the elderly blessed us and thanked us
for bringing them a family they don't
have.
All the volunteers took a pledge to never
leave their parents and always love
them and take care of them. There was
laughter and tears and smiles-a
perfectly good visit that made the
elderly feel loved and cherished and
respected and special.
Next year, WIE and IEEE SB celebrated
with a mission of ‘promoting education
among girl child’ by WIE Affinity group
and IEEE student branch ,LDRP-ITR at
Kolavada village, Gujarat.
Viraj Shah, an IEEE volunteer, delivered
a motivational speech regarding why it
is importance to pursue education., its
benefits and long term results. With the
Innovative Bliss
2014

aim of making every girl child aware
about the essentiality of
education,various inspirational stories
of struggle and rise of some influential
women were narrated. After
successfully pitching in the idea, a
general survey was conducted as to
what each of the girl child aspired to
become in future. And to everyone’s
surprise, there were myriad results
starting from teacher, doctor etc till the
police officers. The enthusiasm and
passion they showed was immense and
appreciable.
Motivational Speech being delivered
After that, different girls came to
perform the various acts of dance,
singing, story narration etc thereby
showcasing their talent in the respective
fields. Our volunteers encouraged them
in every possible manner they can.
Girls dancing along with volunteers
The second session involved networking
activities where in the school kids were
made to play variety of games which
they enjoyed wholeheartedly. Later in
the end chocolates were distributed
among them to make them feel happy,
followed by a group photo shoot.
Group photo
We received a positive feedback from
the teachers and principal of the school.
They insisted us to visit them on every
8th march. Thus, with the motto of
prosperity of women, we celebrated
women’s day with a social cause and
with great zeal and enthusiasm from the
volunteers’ side as well.

Four students from IEEE-SB LDRP ITR were selected to attend IEEE-All India Student Congress-2013.
Amrita University hosted Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – All India Student Congress (IEEE-AISC) 2013 at Coimbatore campus from October 3-6, 2014.
IEEE-AISC was an annual leadership
development conclave to bring together
young IEEE student and professional
members for a series of interactions,
knowledge exchange and networking
opportunities.
With Advancing Technology for
Humanities as motto, the three day
student congress attracted over 370
delegates from various IEEE sections all
over India.
Dr. Ponna Vaikko, Chairman, IEEE India
Council and Vice-Chancellor, SRM
University inaugurated the Congress.
“Each IEEE student volunteer can
organize a program to adopt a school
student, to give training, and certificate,
which earns them a better career,” he
advised the student volunteers.
The annual event brought together young IEEE student and professional members for a series of interactive and networking opportunities.
Spanned over three days, the congress
turned out to be an informative yet an
enjoyable experience for all of us. The
first three days elucidated the various
dimensions of IEEE and its host of
functionalities, along with a number of
fun packed and exciting events. The
fourth day catered to raise the
awareness and bring in more
involvement into two societies namely,
IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Power
and Energy Society.
The first three days included talks by IEEE experts. It aimed at providing impetus for its participants to observe, assimilate and learn from many inspiring sessions.
We had the opportunity to attend an
elite panel discussion and workshops on
entrepreneurship, where we learned
from experienced IEEE leaders and
interacted with three young successful
entrepreneurs. Vijay Anand, Co-founder
and CEO, The Startup Centre, spoke to
the delegates, “Entrepreneurship is

always experimental. We need time and
effort to become an entrepreneur. Do
not try to copy while you want to be an
entrepreneur. You have resourcefulness
and need to have dedication towards
your work,” he pointed out.
“Indians are born with ‘jugaad’ innovative
ideas providing a quick and alternative way
of solving a problem”, noted Priya Kuber,
Managing Director of Arduino India.
Vineeth Vijayaraghavan, Founder and
Editor of Panchabhuta, an independent
journal in the field of renewable energy,
emphasized about social
entrepreneurship.
Technical talks on IEEE sections and
activities, career consultation also held.
33 shortlisted innovative projects from
numerous submissions across the
nation were showcased. The event also
witnessed the felicitation of M. V.
Chauhan All India Student Paper Contest
2013 winners organized by Indian
Council. The main IEEE Society event was the innovative project showcase that was
conducted on Sunday where 33 projects have been short-listed from numerous submissions across the nation.
And our project on the theme “EMF Radiation Compliance Report as per DOT guidelines” won the 2nd prize among them.
The All India Student Congress 2013
was a never before like opportunity for
us to interact with and learn from
various leaders and the top brass of
IEEE. .
The congress provided impetus for us to
observe, assimilate and learn from many
inspiring sessions and thereby evolve as
better leaders for taking on the
challenges ahead. It was also a unique
opportunity for students from various
disciplines and institutions to interact
and exchange ideas and hence benefit
mutually. A live webcast of the congress was being done on all days.

A Parley with
Dr. Radha Parikh -Maitri Vaghela
Dr. Radha Parikh obtained her M.Ed. and
Ed.S. degrees in Special Education from
the University of Florida, and her Ph.D. in
Special Education (with Information
Technology as support area) from the
University of Missouri-Columbia. Her
interest areas include Communication &
Counseling. Currently she is an assistant
professor at Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of
Information & Communication
Technology (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar.
Apart from teaching and research, she has
been the Convener of the DA-IICT Gender
Cell for the last 5 years. She has learned
that in a male dominant world, women
need empowerment to learn their own
capabilities and skills. And we were proud
and honored to have a parley with her….
What triggered your interest in studying
cultural stereotypes?
I've been uncomfortable with our general
tendency to indulge in cultural
stereotypes without giving it a thought on
even the simplest of issues (such as all
Marwadis are stingy, all Gujaratis are
business types, all south Indians or even
Madrasis - note not Tamilian, not Andhra,
not Kannadiga, not Malayali or Coorgi -
merely all Madrasis eat rice, or eat with
their hands or only eat idli sambar!! all
women cry, all girls are weak in Math,
etc.). Are we really living in such a biased
world of over-generalization in this age of
technology?! Ignorance or lack of
awareness underlies most such behaviors.
What have you discovered about how
these stereotypes are communicated, and
what is the impact on women who believe
these stereotypes to be true?
As far as women are concerned, we are
expected to live up to traditional
stereotypes of Savithri who walked the
path of death with Lord Yama to bring her
dead husband back to life; or Sita who
went on a self-imposed exile, self-
immolation on return to prove her purity
and so on. These expectations are
communicated through subtle messages
inherent in our celebration of festivals
where the unwed girl fasts and prays for a
good husband or the wife fasts and prays
for the long and prosperous life of her
husband. In our culture, there is no norm
where men are expected to do sacrificial
rituals for the women. The sad part of life
is that most myths about expectations
from women are promoted by women
themselves. On the other hand with
Western influence we have the Barbie
equivalent types too - cute girls in pink,
with frilly dresses and dimpled flirting!
That doesn't help either. Today, while
urban women are learning to be more
assertive with access to higher education
and career choices earlier open only to
men, women in the villages and suburbs

continue to be embroiled in old belief
systems difficult to get out of. Most girls
in rural settings have low self-esteem and
zero ambitions about life. Parents must
learn to treat sons and daughters as equal
and bring them up with equal hopes
striving for long term goals.
What can women do to overcome barriers
that can stop them from pursuing career
in engineering domain?
There are ways to encourage women
across India, not just the elite urban
women, to make wise career choices of
their interest, and not based on what is
the typical expectation: "after all she will
soon marry and not be allowed to work -
therefore a B.Sc. or B.A. is sufficient
education."
Right now, the Government has launched
a multi-pronged approach to promoting
education for girls, including incentives
such as free bus travel, provision of a cyle
where bus service is not available, midday
meals, and providing farmer parents with
grain to make up for the loss of one labour
hand from the farm.
Teachers from middle school onwards can
talk about career choices to both the boys
and girls in their classes, so that as many
girls as boys choose to join the Science
stream based on interest, and not opt for
Arts or Commerce only. At higher
secondary level, there are aptitude tests
that can help assess students' potential
success in a particular career, guiding
them in making wise choices.
All of you who are girls in engineering
here, know that you are part of a
privileged few who have had the bounty
of a quality education and so you would
be the right people to encourage other
girls to study further.
How do you comprehend your journey
with so many feathers in your cap?
I'm not sure about the feathers :-) But
I'm happy to say that my life journey has
been one long study trip; completing my
first Master's degree in Literature after my
first child; completing my second Master's
in Education and M.Phil. (or Ed.S. as it's
known in the US) after my second child
and the last my Ph.D. after the third child.
The three kids are the real feathers
without doubt! and the education is part
of my commitment to be a good role
model for them.
Your achievements are unparalleled, what
message would you like to convey to the
youth?
My message to young people is to never
lose hope; learn to introspect to know
who you are and at the end of day decide
if you are happy with your day, your work,
and your interactions. If you're not happy,
change is necessary and that can only
come from an intrinsic need within you to
change; nothing that a parent or teacher
or any adult in your life tells you will
motivate you as much as your wish to
empower yourself.
A lot of time is spent on social networking
sites which may have some benefits but

overall you lose track of time and then it's
difficult to remain on task in academics.
Good to remain focused and aware of all
the injustice that goes on in the world and
think of solutions to stop these from
happening. Only youth can do this! You
have the power! you are the future of the
world!
As for women, we have proved time and
again our ability to multi-task and excel.
So being an engineer will in no way reduce
a girl's ability to cook and serve a tasty
meal for her family; or reduce her capacity
to share love, caring and nurture with her
family.
God created man and woman equal.
When the two wings of a bird are equal in
power, civilization can progress further.

PHOTOSHOP- AN
EVENT WORTH
ATTENDING
-Suhani Mehta
As we know, in this fast changing world
only coding will not help. Designing is
important as well. Taking into account
this point, IEEE SB of our college
decided to conduct a workshop on
Photoshop. Photoshop is such a tool
which can give fire to the designer
minds. And encouraging these minds
was our motto behind organizing this
workshop.
A two day workshop on Photoshop
Designing was conducted by WIE in
association with IEEE on 17th and 18th
September, 2013.The expert, Mr.Jigar
Patel, had 8 years of work experience in
teaching Photoshop. Around 52
students enthusiastically participated in
the event.
The event commenced with an
introductory briefing about the work
qualifications of the expert. Then the
command was taken over by the expert
who began the session by enlightening
the students regarding the Photoshop,
the carrier opportunities associated
with taking up Photoshop Designing as a
profession (photo design artist, web
designer etc), its demand in the current
market and benefits.
On Day1 (17th September), initially the
expert guided through the basic
installation of Photoshop software CS2
in PCs. Then he began briefing about the
basics of Photoshop like workspace,
types of images, file manipulation, file
opening, cropping, creating and resizing
an image.
Then began the main session where core
topics like platelets/panels, adjustment-
retouching, spot healing, various types of
tools (clone, blur, dodge, marquee, lasso etc)
were taught in detail.
On Day2 (19th September), the contents
included detailed explanation and
implementation of topics like selection,
layer, transform, filter, text, style and a
few practical assignments.
The event ended with the declaration of
a poster making competition in which
the participant with the best poster on
the upcoming IEEE Student Branch,

SIG (SPECIAL
INTEREST
GROUPS) -Hemant Soni IEEE SB of our college believes in
learning in all the ways possible. This
belief led to the formation of Special
Interest Groups (SIGs) in our SB. The
main motto of this initiative is to spread
technical knowledge to as many IEEE
members in our college as we can.
Special Interest Groups are formed by
students who share special interest in a
particular field and work together in
that field after college hours on every
Saturday.
The first SIG was on HTML from basics
to advance. The entire EXECOM member
participated in the event. The students
were taught the format as well as the
tags and also given some practicals to
perform. Also they were encouraged to
clear their doubts from the experts
present there. The experts were the
students who had grip in that particular
topic.
Next SIG, We had a session on C++. It
included the basics of C++, its
implementation, advanced C++ and all
the other topics in it. The students were
very much interested to learn. The
sessions were always interactive.
The Members were allowed to choose
their own interest topics. Also the
students worked to prove their
efficiency. And this continued every
Saturday with different topics and
Experts.

WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT
-Suhani Mehta and Keta Modi
IEEE SB of LDRP-ITR believes in training
in its members to face every problem
whether it is technical or social. They
make its members independent in all
the ways. This was our motto to conduct
this workshop.
On 15th March 2013, under Xenesis-an
annual technological festival of LDRP-
ITR, WIE affinity group in association
with IEEE Student Branch, LDRP-ITR,
organized a workshop on Women
Empowerment. The basic aim of this
workshop was to empower the girls,
teaching them how to defend
themselves physically-thereby
empowering themselves as an equal in
the society.
The session started with a motivational
speech by Mr. Arvind Rana, an
international Taekwondo player. He
assured the participants that women are
not weak as they pursue themselves to
be but very strong both mentally and
physically. He explained that women are
built in a different way and if they play
to their strengths, they can empower
themselves and can live confidently in
the knowledge that they can protect
themselves and are equal in the battle of
sexes.
Afterwards, the session was undertaken
by Mr. Gaurang Rana, who has been
training boys and girls in Taekwondo
since 20 years.
This session was an entirely practical
session which aimed at teaching the
participants some basic moves of
Taekwondo that are not at all difficult
but can come to defence when a girl is
placed under critical condition.
The participants actively participated as
the session was fun and educating at the
same time. Mr. Rana, along with his
assistants, demonstrated various
situations that count under critical
conditions and how to react under those
situations, and also perfected the
participants' moves.

The event also witnessed a lucky draw
in which a few participants were
awarded gifts like pepper sprays and
personal alarms that can prove handy
for self defence. At the end of the
session, despite having learnt self
defence for the first time, no participant
felt like an amateur but had a slightly
more confidence in the knowledge that
they need not be afraid.

WOMEN IN
ENGINEERING
(WIE)
-Suhani Mehta and Keta Modi
LDRP-ITR IEEE Student Branch
organized a seminar in association with
IEEE WIE on Women in Engineering as a
part of Technical Festival XENESIS-2013
on 16th April, 2013. It mainly focused
on what women in the engineering field
can actually do in engineering apart
from what they do. Making women think
out of the box and bringing on all the
colors out which actually are there in
women to make her completely
developed.
There were a total of 60 girl participants
in the event.
Dr. Savita Gandhi, Professor and Head of
Department in Gujarat University, gave
a brief idea on the various topics of
mathematics. After her session Shreya
Rajani and Avani, students of Marwadi
Education Institute and
active members of IEEE WIE, took over
the session. They explained the
participants all about IEEE WIE, and the
benefits of being a WIE member.
Their session also included topics like
empowerment of women in various
fields, entrepreneurship in women.
There were various activities so that the
participants could be interactive. The
activities included a quiz about the
women who have achieved great
heights.
It was one of the interactive session
which resulted into flow of knowledge
and awareness about IEEE WIE.

IEEEXtreme-The
event most awaited -Maitri Vaghela and Nispand Mehta
IEEEXtreme is a global challenge in
which teams of IEEE Student members,
supported by an IEEE Student Branch,
advised and proctored by an IEEE
member; compete in a 24-hour time
span against each other to solve a set of
programming problems.
On 27th of October 2013, IEEE Student
Branch LDRP-ITR decided to host the
IEEE’s most famous and most awaiting
coding competition IEEE Xtreme 7.0. A total of 29 students participated in
competition forming 11 teams between
them. College authorities gave us the
permission to use the Internet Lab for
24 hours thus they allowed us to stay in college for 24 hours provided a faculty should stay with students as a mentor. For this Prof.Nirav Suthar took the charge and agreed to take the responsibility of students staying at college for competition.
Competing in the world’s most Xtreme
programming contest is a big deal; by
participating means you get unlimited
bragging rights. Competition started at morning 7.00
a.m of 27th October and lasted till early
morning 5.00 a.m of 28th October.
Competition was hosted on
Hackerrank.com where participants
were provided with online accounts on
which problem sums were uploaded
and new sums were uploaded from time
to time. Sums consisted of different difficulty
level starting from basic input/output
problems to problems that were
adverse.
The misconception that about such
type of coding competitions that it is all
type of coding and no fun was proved
wrong after the event saw a great
amount of team work. The teams not
only coded but also but also proved
this quote very efficiently “individually
we are drop but together we are an
ocean”.
Innovative Bliss

37
And the results were outstanding. One of our team ADKcoders achieved a remarkable 261th rank at R10 level and was at 1st rank in the university. The other team VMprogrammers was at 392
rank at R10 level and 2nd in the
university. The team technocoders were
at 494 at R1o level and #rd in the
university. 10 teams from the university
qualified.
This competition was also successful
because the participants who
participated in this competition for the
first time were successful in removing
this fear from participating in such
type of competitons.Students generally
feels that they are not capable enough
to participate in this type of events, but
unless you participate in this type of
competitions you won’t come to know
about your capabalities, limitations and
solutions to improve yourself.
