Thank You for Helping to Fight Fungal MeningitisEveryday, we see the benefits of your gifts in support of St. Joe’s. When fungal meningitis* hit our nation this past fall, your support made a profound impact by helping St. Joe’s Ann Arbor be a health care haven to 175 patients needing treatment – nearly all of the patients affected in Michigan.
“Once it was clear that something unusual was happening…SJMHS physicians, nurses, administrators and clinical staff came together in a matter of hours with a single goal: to care for patients for whom there were no clear treatment guidelines,” said Thomas Shehab, MD, SJMH Chief of Staff. Before the outbreak, fungal meningitis was virtually non-existent, and so was information on the pathology and treatment of this life-threatening disease. “Our teamwork, talent and facilities were essential to caring for our patients and to creating a blueprint for treatment now followed by health care centers across the nation,” Shehab added.
“St. Joe’s dedicated physicians and staff and those from throughout Trinity Health who came to help were at the heart of the response, treating more than a quarter of those affected by fungal meningitis in our nation. We identified the first patients in Michigan and proactively addressed the unexpected rise in secondary infections,” said Rob Casalou, President & CEO St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston Hospitals.
“Your gifts helped build our Patient Towers, Surgery Pavilion, Imaging Center and Emergency Center – the environment needed to manage this health crisis, save lives and to offer hope and healing to patients and families in urgent need,” said Casalou. “We are grateful to you.”

*In Fall 2012 the Center for Disease Control determined that the cause of the multi-state fungal meningitis outbreak was linked to contaminated steroid shots produced
by the Massachusetts based New England Compounding Center. No SJMHS hospital or pain clinic received or administered the contaminated injections.
Cover: While lumbar punctures found fungal meningitis in the spinal fluid, MRI became the only way to detect the presence of secondary infection. “My team rallied together to add 629 scans to an already full schedule,” said Alice Pichan, SJMHS Director of Radiology. “We were facing a catastrophic need.” As of January 2013, more than 450 patients received an MRI, some getting two or more based on their symptoms. Academic papers and a CDC webinar will soon offer information on how to read MRIs for fungal cases so other radiologists can learn from St. Joe’s.
Harold Rye was among the first patients in Michigan to be treated for fungal meningitis and endured two long hospital stays. Mr. Rye, like many of our patients fighting fungal meningitis, faced painful symptoms, treatment side effects, surgery to scrape away fungus from an epidural abscess, and the “fear of the unknown.” After life-saving treatments and weeks or sometimes months of care, St. Joe’s became a home away from home.
Harold’s wife, Nell, and daughter Diana Bucciarelli nominated Judy Page, RN, for a DAISY nomination, a special award to thank nurses. The Family wrote, “ALL of the 5 North staff - physicians, nurses, techs, food services and housekeeping – have been phenomenal…under the most difficult circumstances. Judy was the nurse who cared for him the most. She brought much kindness, warmth, compassion, patience, comfort, humor and professionalism. Judy shared her knowledge with us, and always took extra time to explain what was happening. She feels like part of our family now.”
A Patient’s Experience...Harold and Nell Rye joined Judy Page, RN, (center) as she received her DAISY award at St. Joe’s.

“Your gifts so far have helped to build the South Pavilion
with a new Emergency Center and two new Patient Units,”
said Dan Murphy, Campaign Co-chair. “We are grateful and
inspired. Continued support will help to renovate existing
patient rooms from semi-private to private, add the Wellness
Center and enhance care for our community.”

Join us for Phase II ofSt. Mary Mercy Livonia’sGenerations Together Campaign
Your Gifts in ActionYour gifts for Phase I of the Campaign are already benefiting patients and families. A dramatic increase in the number of inpatients this past flu season – reported to be the worst in a decade – immediately demon-strated the importance of your support for our new South Pavilion. And, on its very first day of opening, more than 160 patients turned to the new ER for care – 20 more than average and the highest daily count in our history. You are making health care better for our community.
“We are fortunate to have the commitment of every member of the
Generations Together Campaign Cabinet,” said Sara Stauffer, SMML
Director of Development. “Their support, insight and energy has, and will
continue to be, invaluable.”
Your continued support is needed. For more information or to support
Generations Together Campaign, please call Sara Stauffer at the St. Mary
