By Dr. Greg Fors, DC, DIBCN Years of treatment for low thyroid, but you still have your chronic fatigue, pain and sleep issues, possibly even worse?! Some estimate as many as 1 in 7 adults suffer from hypothyroid symptoms. Surprisingly, some of these debilitating hypothyroid-like symptoms may NOT be coming from a low thyroid! Often people with symptoms of a low thyroid are told that their lab tests are “normal”, and that there is not a problem. If you really want to heal, it’s time think outside the box! Stop letting your insurance company determine what is appropriate testing and treatment for you. If you want to regain your vitality and health - to make a real difference in your life - you need to explore the actual source of your vitality At the center of your cells are hundreds of throbbing engines, the mitochondria, cranking out massive amounts of energy for everything you do, creating a vital life! They take calories from your food; break it down and literally burn it for energy. When they are humming along, like well tuned engines, you have all the energy you need. When they are not working efciently this loss of vitality can lead to many common problems. Imagine your thyroid gland, muscles and neurons continually coming up a little short on energy, what sort of symptoms might this bring on? Research is now demonstrating that disorders such as chronic pain, bromyalgia, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue and even neurodegeneration involve the lack of optimal cellular energy production and not just low thyroid function. Your cells become inefcient at producing energy when deprived of the necessary nutrients and the proper fuel they need to do their work. When this becomes chronic from poor dietary choices your thyroid may not work well, muscle cells can become painful, tender and tired, and the brain becomes sluggish and depressed. When you eat a diet lled with empty calories you actually deplete the nutrients your cells need to function properly. More troubling is that chemicals in our environment can cause cellular injury. These industrial chemicals and pesticides cause damaging free radicals that disrupt the energy producing process of your cells and deplete your vitality. Your thyroid hormone does stimulate cellular metabolism, and if your thyroid is not working properly the cells of your body and brain can slow down. However if your cells are low on energy, if their gas tank is on empty, then thyroid hormone can do little to improve vitality. It is a bit like whipping a dying horse. This is one reason why many individuals who have been on years of thyroid medication still have all their symptoms of hypothyroidism: cold hands and feet, sensitivity to cold weather, psychological depression, cognitive difculties, dry skin, scaly scalp, brittle hair, menstrual problems, constipation, diminished stomach HCl production, etc. Furthermore your thyroid needs to be healthy itself, made up of healthy cells with adequate energy to work properly and produce adequate levels of thyroxine. How does one go about diagnosing and treating this loss of cellular vitality? You have to think outside the box of “standards of care” based on your insurance companies dictates. With this approach you can utilize specic functional laboratory tests, such as a comprehensive metabolic and thyroid blood prole, metabolic urinary organic acid prole, oxidative stress panel, plasma amino acids and essential fatty acid prole. These are tests that I utilize in my practice to more accurately determine the underlying causes of the wide variety of disorders: hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, bromyalgia, and depression to autism and ADHD. Utilizing my 3R program, Remove/ Restore and Repair, we can identify and remove factors causing cellular dysfunction, then restore needed nutrient levels based on your specic metabolic needs and repair the cellular damage. With this approach, most patients are able to return to full life without chronic fatigue, pain, depression and the many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Have more questions? ALLEY OOPS!(Continued)

• The English, Dutch, and German settlers all brought their own versions of the game to the New World but the Dutch settlers fi rst introduced their form of bowling called ‘Dutch 9 pins’ during the 16th century. Manhattan, which is where the Dutch played this form of bowling, is sometimes still referred to as ‘Bowling Green’.• Other alternative forms of bowling were also played. The most extreme form came from Scotland. Here the player threw a ball with no holes, between his legs, towards the pins and, after he had released the ball, the player would slide towards the pins on his belly. • Ninepin bowling became the popular standard in the United States. While it is still unknown where ten pin bowling fi rst started, here’s a possible origin. • Over time, bowling popularity attracted a lot of gambling, which in turn gave it a bad name. Because of this gambling, a law in Connecticut was approved in 1841 that prohibited people to own ninepin bowling lanes. But people simply got around this law by putting an extra bowling pin on the deck.• From there we know that by the end of the 19th century, tenpin bowling was played in many states yet still there were no general rules for the sport. The weight and size of balls, pins and lanes all differed from state to state.• All this changed when restaurateur Joe Thumb organized a meeting between representatives from different regional clubs. On 9 September 1895, the American Bowling Congress (ABC) was founded at the Beethoven Hall in New York. Soon the ABC issued general rules and people became able to start national competitions and tournaments. • The ABC was only meant for male bowlers, although women were playing bowling since the second half of the 19th century. It wasn’t until 1917 under the encouragement of proprietor Dennis Sweeny, that women got their own congress. In that year the Women’s International Bowling Congress was founded.

Bowling Today

• Prior to the 20th century bowling balls were made of a hard type of wood, called ‘lignum vitae’. Setting up or

clearing the knocked over pins required the constant attention of “pin boys”. • Then technology used in bowling took a giant step forward. In 1905 the fi rst rubber bowling ball, named the ‘Evertrue’, was shown to the public. Nine years later (1914) the Brunswick Corporation, which then was a manufacturer of billiard balls, released the fi rst Mineralite Ball on the market, which became a huge success due to its mysterious rubber compound and the effects it had on the way the ball acted when rolled.• It was this and another technological breakthrough that led to the incredible growth of bowling as a national and world pastime and sport. This was the introduction of the automatic pinsetter invented by Gottfried Schmidt in his garage in 1936. Morehead Patterson, vice-president of the American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF), which manufactured machines for the bakery, tobacco and apparel businesses, bought the patents for this machine and fi rst showed it to the public at the ABC National Championships in Buffalo in 1946. Soon pinboys were nostalgic history.

Quick Facts and Terms

• Three strikes in a row in the game of bowling are called a turkey. The term dates back to before the turn of the 20th century. In those years strikes were much more diffi cult and to get three strikes in a row was quite an achievement. During Thanksgiving or Christmas week, the proprietor would be expected to present a live turkey to the fi rst person on each team who scored three consecutive strikes. The term has carried over ever since. Don’t confuse a turkey with a triplicate, which is the term for three identical scores in a three-game series. If three strikes in a row are a turkey, three consecutive open frames (those without a strike or spare) constitute a “buzzard.” Here’s a guy who knew about both.• Reed Townley of Gadsden, Alabama, bowled an unusual three-game series in January of 1989. Townley’s fi rst game had an “in-the-cellar” score of 89. He dipped even lower his second game to 87. For his third game, he changed either his style or his attitude because he bowled a perfect 300 game. • It takes 12 strikes in a row to score that perfect 300 game, which includes three in the tenth frame.

Born just 23 days apart in 1941, PaulSimon and Art Garfunkel began asfriends in elementary school. Join Tidbitsas we take a closer look at this duo’slong history. • Simon and Garfunkel fi rst appeared together in their school play“Alice in Wonderland” in 1953, in whichSimon starred as the White Rabbit and Garfunkel as the Cheshire Cat. Theyattended middle school together and went on to Forest Hills High School, where in their junior year, they started performing together.• The pair called themselves Tom and Jerry, with Garfunkel using the nameTom Graph, and Simon dubbing himself Jerry Landis. The duo split upfor the fi rst of their many times shortlyafterward, and Simon composed a fewminor hits using the stage name Tico, writing and singing with Tico & theTriumphs. • Paul Simon received a B.A.in English from Queens College and entered law school, only to drop out tochase his music career. Art Garfunkelreceived a B.A. in Art History and aMasters of Science in Mathematics fromColumbia, recording several singles as“Artie Garr” while in school. Save energy and keep the air inside your house cleaner this winter

(ARA) - When the temperatures plummet, you shut the windows, flip the air switch to heat and plug any leak you can find in an effort to keep your house warm. But what you’re also doing is sealing the air inside your house.

While a good tight seal is very important to staying warm and keeping your energy bill in check, it also can really have an impact on indoor air quality.

“When you flip that switch on your heater, there is a lot of dust and debris - collected in the coils over the summer months - that either burns into fumes or gushes into the house through your vents,” says Aaron Marshbanks, board member of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA).

In addition, your heating system blends warm temperatures with air that can be moist, and which can be a haven for mold and mildew. Throw a fan on top of that, and the air quality inside your home can quickly plummet.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The removal of such contaminants from your HVAC system is crucial to improve indoor air quality. Plus, a clean system can save you money on your energy bill.

“Heating and cooling uses up about half of the energy in your home,” says Marshbanks. “But having a clean HVAC system can save you up to 30 percent in energy costs. Which means you have better air inside the house, and are helping the environment with an extra bit of cash in your pocket at the same time.”

The top issues that affect a home’s HVAC system, its efficiency and air quality are:

1. Filtration - Low-efficiency filters, lack of a filter replacement program and improperly sized filters can allow particles and debris to flow into a home or building. 2. Duct work contamination - It is estimated that about 90 percent of HVAC systems more than 10 years old will have some level of insulation deterioration. Over time, the

insulation fibers are distributed and blown into occupied spaces every time the blower turns on.

3. Dirty evaporator coil - Over time, evaporator coils become matted with dust and dirt. During cold months, the heated air can flow over the dirty coils and be distributed into your home’s interior space.

The best way to determine if your HVAC system is clean is to perform a visual inspection. If any dust or debris can be seen, the system needs to be serviced. Some of the things that may lead a home owner to consider more frequent cleaning include:

* Smokers in the household. * Pets that shed high amounts of hair and dander. * Water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system. * Residents with allergies or asthma. * Home renovations or remodeling.

The most effective way to clean air ducts and ventilation systems is to employ source removal methods of cleaning. This requires a contractor to place the system under negative pressure through the use of a specialized, powerful vacuum.

NADCA has published an internationally recognized standard that specifies requirements for proper cleaning. NADCA is a widely recognized nonprofit trade organization representing certified contractors worldwide that sets standards and provides certification and training for the industry. For more information about HVAC cleaning and to find a certified and knowledgeable contractor, visit www.NADCA.com.

Q: I live in a neighborhood that’s knownfor more tricks than treats. What I meanis, the teenagers around here like to egghouses on Halloween night, throw rollsof toilet paper into the trees -- that kind of thing. Last year I had to have my car towed to the mechanic and the gas tank emptied because I thought they’d put anegg into it. Anyway, how do I clean off stains made by eggs, fruit and other stuff the kids throw at my house? -- Herb D.,DeLand, Fla.

A: Eggs thrown against the side of ahouse are pretty annoying, both whenthe prank fi rst happens and then later, cleaning them off. The protein in theegg adheres to exterior paint and can bediffi cult to clean off. So the faster youtackle an egg stain, the better. Here’s a few tips on how to clean up afew different prankster messes.▲ Egg: Rinse off the egged area as soonas possible with cold water and wipe witha damp cloth. If you can’t get all the egg

off, apply an enzyme-containing laundry detergent, soak for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water.▲ Toilet paper: Just lift it off of the “papered” object and throw away. If pranksters papered a tree, use a long stick to bring paper strands down. If the tree is near power lines, don’t use the stick -- spray water to bring the paper down.▲ Silly String: This is nontoxic and nonadherent to most surfaces. If it’s dry, simply brush it off. Avoid rinsing with water because the colored foam will streak down the surface.▲ Shaving cream: Remove from non-glass surfaces as quickly as possible. Wipe away the foam fi rst and then rinse with warm water.▲ Mud and grass -- Rinse away as fast as possible from your home’s siding. If a grass stain is still visible, dab with a mixture of white vinegar and alcohol, then rinse.▲ Fruit: If rinsed off immediately, fruit acids shouldn’t be a problem, but you can clean the area with an enzyme-containing detergent to be sure.▲ Ketchup or mustard: Scrape away as much as possible without rubbing it deeper into the siding or masonry. Scrub with dry-cleaning solvent or an enzyme-containing detergent, and rinse. Or, make a paste with baking soda and water and spread over a tough stain, let soak and rinse away.

HOME TIP: While no house is completely safe from Halloween pranksters,

deterrence measures including motion-sensor outdoor lights, and indoor lights and sound (such as a radio left on) offer some protection.

► Keep shells from cracking when boiling eggs: Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water. Also, if you stir the eggs constantly during cooking, your yolks will be centered in a hard-boiled egg.

► For a personalized pumpkin decoration, stencil the letters of your family name onto a series of small pumpkins. Cut out the letters. Add a small piece of tracing paper on the inside of the pumpkins, over the hole made by the letter. Add your candle or other lighting, and line them up.

► If you have problems with tears and watery, stinging eyes when cutting onions, remove the skin under water. Cut the top off an onion, and submerge it in

a small bowl of water. Remove the outer layer and the skin while it’s under water.Take it out and chop. This should lessenyour symptoms.

► Use a saltshaker to sprinkle sugar oncookies. Make sure you label it if youput it back in your cabinet!

■ On Nov. 4, 1922, British a r c h a e o l o g i s t Howard Carter and his workmen discover a step leading to the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the Valley of the

Kings in Egypt. The most splendid architectural fi nd was a stone sarcophagus containing three nested coffi ns. Inside the fi nal, solid gold coffi n was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years.

■ On Nov. 5, 1930, Sinclair Lewis is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels “Main Street” (1920), “Babbitt” (1922), “Arrowsmith” (1925) and “Elmer Gantry” (1927). In 1926, he had turned down the Pulitzer Prize awarded him for “Arrowsmith.”

■ On Nov. 2, 1947, the Hughes Flying Boat -- the largest aircraft ever built -- is piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its fi rst and only fl ight. Built with laminated birch and spruce, the massive wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football fi eld and was designed to carry more than 700 men into battle.

■ On Nov. 7, 1957, The Gaither Report called for by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to review the nation’s defense readiness and urges a vigorous $30 billion campaign to build fallout shelters to protect American citizens. It suggested that American citizens were completely unprotected from nuclear attack.

■ On Nov. 3, 1964, residents of the District of Columbia cast ballots in a presidential election for the fi rst time. The passage of the 23rd Amendment in 1961 gave citizens of the nation’s capital the right to vote for a president and vice president.

■ On Nov. 6, 1982, Shirley Allen is arrested in Missouri for poisoning her husband, Lloyd Allen, with ethylene glycol, commonly known as anti-freeze. Lloyd Allen was Shirley’s sixth husband and the second to die from mysterious causes.

■ On Nov. 8, 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen becomes the fi rst person to observe X-rays. Rontgen’s discovery occurred accidentally in his Wurzburg, Germany, lab, where he was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass.

■ On Nov. 13, 1974, 28-year-old Karen Silkwood, a technician at a plutonium plant operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation, is killed in a suspicious car accident near Crescent, Okla. She was on her way to a meeting with a reporter for The New York Times, reportedly with a folder full of documents that proved that Kerr-McGee was acting negligently when it came to worker safety at the plant.

■ On Nov. 9, 1989, East German offi cials open the Berlin Wall, allowing travel from East to West Berlin. The following day, celebrating Germans began to tear down the wall, reducing it to rubble that was quickly snatched up by souvenir hunters.

ALLEY OOPS!(Continued From Pg. 3)

• Jeremy Sonnenfeld was a 20-year-old college sophomore when he became the fi rst person in history to roll a perfect 900 series — three “300” games. “Mr. 900,” as he came to be called, accomplished this feat in February of 1997. Although a fellow named Norm Duke had bowled three consecutive 300 games the previous year, they weren’t in the same series, and Sonnenfeld’s 900 score went on the books. • Missed your strike? Go for a Dutch 200 where spares and strikes are alternated (spare-strike-spare strike, etc.) for the entire game, resulting in a score of 200 exactly. Whether you strike or not picking up all your spares gives you a “clean sheet”. • Pins are numbered from the head pin as #1 and continuing the count on the rolls behind it from left to right. The all important “pocket”, (where you want to

bury that 1st throw), for a right-handed bowler, is that space between the 1 and 3 pins. The left-hander’s pocket is between the 1 and 2. A Brooklyn occurs when a right-handed bowler’s ball strikes the left side of the head pin or when a left-hander’s ball strikes the right side of the head pin and results in a strike. Either way stay off the head pin or you may get every bowler’s nightmare, the split, also called a “railroad”.• Those spots on the alleys aren’t there for décor. Serious bowlers fi nd a spot on the alley over which their ball must pass to bury it in the pocket and focus on that spot entirely. Relax and nail your spot every time and watch your scores soar. • Professional bowlers use the word “logs” to refer to heavy pins used for practice. They can be up to four pounds each. • Speaking of pros, Don Carter, Dick Weber and Earl Anthony are three of the greatest and well know champions of the game. In January of 2002, there was rather a profi table vacation in store for 25-year-old Brett Wolfe. He took a few days off from work to compete in the American Bowling Congress Masters

and won, becoming only the sixth amateur in 52 years to win the $500,000 prize, snatching it from hundreds of more seasoned, professional bowlers.

One Last Bit

• The European version of bowling, called Bocce, originated in Italy and is played on the lawn. Each of the two competing teams has four 4.5-inch (11.4-cm) diameter balls and shares one 1.75-inch (4.45-cm) diameter target ball known as the “Jack” or “Pallino”. The target ball is thrown out onto the fi eld, and then the teams alternately toss or roll their Bocce balls, hoping to land closest to the Jack, while displacing their opponent’s ball. The ball closest to the target scores a point, and the fi rst team to reach 12 points wins.

Technology makes it easier than ever to age gracefully

(ARA) - Thick-lensed glasses with bifocal lines, dentures that look too perfect to be real and, of course, bulky, heavy hearing aids that just can’t be overlooked - once, there was no mistaking the signs of age. Many people chose to endure the inconveniences of aging, rather than wear the overly obvious devices that might have eased vision and hearing losses. Technology, however, is making aging less conspicuous. Advances in optometric science and great design have turned glasses into style statements worn by people of all ages. Products like bifocal contact lenses and virtually invisible hearing aids can make some of the natural bodily changes associated with growing older seem less obvious and reduce their impact on a person’s quality of life. “Your eye doctor may start talking about bifocals when you enter your 40s, and by the time you are in your 50s, you may notice a difference in your hearing,” says Dr. Barry Freeman from hearing aid maker Starkey Laboratories, Inc. “Many people may put off doing something about hearing loss or vision loss because they don’t like the thought of wearing a visible hearing or thick glasses, and being thought of as ‘old’ when they still feel young in other ways.” If you’ve begun to experience age-related vision or hearing loss, don’t wait to see your doctor,

Freeman advises. “You have plenty of options for doing something about hearing loss and vision changes - options that can help relieve the problems these changes cause, without making you feel old in the process.”

Modern hearing aids

Hearing loss affects more than 31 million Americans, according to the Better Hearing Institute. People age 55 to 64 make up the largest group with hearing loss. In fact, 15 percent of people ages 45 to 64 have some level of hearing loss. If you’re old enough to need help with hearing, but still young enough - or young enough at heart - to dislike the idea of a traditional hearing aid, there is good news. For people with mild to moderate hearing loss, modern hearing aids not only reduce background noise, cut static, make it easier to hear on the phone and can be controlled remotely, some are virtually invisible as well. Because invisible hearing aids are inserted deep into the ear, near the eardrum, they require less power and amplifi cation. And the snug fi t makes them more comfortable to wear. Starkey’s new invisible-in-the-canal hearing aid, OtoLens, is invisible when worn because it sits within the second bend of the ear canal. Unlike other “invisible” in-canal hearing aids, this one can be removed by the wearer every day; other brands

require a visit to an audiologist to insert and remove the aid, or even to change its batteries. Daily removal can promote better ear health. Digital signal processing ensures clear sound in nearly every situation. Log on to www.starkey.com to learn more.

Better bifocals

Ben Franklin invented bifocals in the late 1760s, to help relieve the need to carry two pairs of glasses - one for close reading, the other for seeing distances. Bifocals have come a long way since then. While many of us may remember seeing the tell-tale line between the distances and reading portions of the lenses in our grandparents’ glasses, modern bifocal glasses can look the same as single-vision lenses. The line of division between lens powers can be invisible. Another type of lens actually allows the wearer to turn off the reading magnifi cation. And bifocals can now be fi tted into virtually any designer frame - bulky frames are no longer needed to hold thick lenses. Finally, if you’ve always worn contact lenses, there’s no need anymore to add reading glasses to your vision care equipment. Now you can wear contact lenses that also provide a bifocal effect. Thanks to modern technology like invisible-in-the-canal hearing aid and better bifocals, it’s possible to age more gracefully than ever.

New Gift Card Rules and the Upcoming Holidays

If you’ve been following this column for very long, you know that I am not a fan of Gift Cards: 1) Most Gift Cards are good in only one store, 2) That store could go bankrupt making that Gift Card useless, 3) It is impossible to spend a Gift Card to the penny; you either leave a bit on the card to be lost forever or you go over and have to dig into your own pocket, 4) Those Gift Cards that are good in any store come with a big fee on the front end, and 5) No matter how you cut it, the card will self-eliminate over time.

I know what you’re thinking: But Mary, don’t you know about the new law that fi xes all the problems with Gift Cards? Not so fast, Bucko. That’s the hype in the media, but let’s take a look at the facts. Yes, the Credit CARD Act of 2009 does address Gift Cards, but not in the ways you might imagine. Basically Gift Cards are still a rip-off. What the new law requires is that now you must be informed about how you and your recipient are going to get ripped off. Here are the highlights of the new rules on Gift Cards issued by the Fed in the Credit CARD Act of 2009. 1. New limits on Inactivity Fees. Inactivity or dormancy fees can only kick in after a card has been unused for 12 months, and only one such fee is allowed per month. The issuer must provide the cardholder with clearly stated information on what

those fees are and how they may be triggered. 2. Clearly marked expiration dates. Gift Cards purchased after August 22, 2010, must have the expiration date clearly printed on the plastic itself. A Gift Card may not expire for a minimum of fi ve years after the original issue, or the last time funds were loaded onto the account. 3. Clear and conspicuous terms. The issuer must provide all other information pertinent to the Gift Card in clear, easy-to-understand terms. See what I mean? There’s nothing new that is going to make Gift Cards a foolproof proposition. Many recipients will still toss them aside because they don’t seem like real money. Others will carry them around for so long they

become self-depleting. While others will harbor a tiny bit of angst because in the end it will cost them money to use up the darn thing. One last thing: Never throw away a used-up Gift Card. In the event of a return, the depleted Gift Card will be necessary to obtain a refund for items purchased. This is not a new provision with the Credit CARD Act but one that few people know about. There’s a way to take care of all of these problems. CASH. It always fi ts, never get’s tossed out with the gift wrap and does not come with an expiration date. Best of all: No fees
