P&F Trivia Night
Dear Our Lady of Good Counsel Learning Community,
It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of Week 8, however as we look back there has
certainly been a lot happening in the life of OLGC. The next couple of weeks will continue to
be very busy as we will be conducting Parent Teacher Interviews. Parent Teacher Interviews are
a wonderful opportunity to discuss and celebrate student achievements and recognize the hard
work and effort they have been putting into their learning. It is also a time when teachers and
parents also discuss areas still to be developed and areas to be focused on throughout the next
weeks and term ahead. We look forward to parents joining with staff in these discussions as
education is a partnership that requires student support, parent support and teacher support. To
assist with the smooth running of these interviews we ask parents to be on time and have
supervision for their children whilst the interviews take place to ensure quality conversations
occur, without distraction and with safety in mind. I thank you for your anticipated support
and involvement in this process.
OLGC Centenary Fete—Sunday 27th August
This year our biannual school fete is to be held and has been scheduled for
Sunday 27th August. As this year is our centenary the fete will be combined
as part of our centenary celebrations. To ensure this year’s fete will be
another memorable event in the life of OLGC we are calling for your
support and assistance. There are many talented and gifted members of
our community and we are asking you to consider the individual talents
you have and invite you to showcase them as a stall convener or helper. If
you have a talent, gift or idea and would like to contribute to our Fete, please contact Danelle
Lackey on 0448 617 581, or the school office, to get the ball rolling.
Parents and Friends Trivia Night—Friday 24th March
Have you registered your table for this well-planned family event? This year
the OLGC P&F have planned a fun and entertaining evening of trivia for the
whole family. There will be great family prizes for each of the rounds. Each
round of questions is framed around a theme or category. Remember it is our
centenary year so there may even be a round of questions specific to our
school and local community. If you haven’t registered your table, it is not too
late, jump on Qkr today and register.
ANZAC Day March – Gatton Tuesday 25th April
The Procession will start to form at 10am in North Street, Gatton,
adjacent to the council office, for a 10.30am start. The march will lead to
the Boer War Memorial then to Littleton Park for service. All students
attending must wear formal school uniform with a hat.
Congratulations to the Duong family on the safe arrival of their baby girl Lily .
May God bless our Learning Community as we continue on our learning journey.
Yours Sincerely
Nathan Haley

CURRICULUM NEWS
Support a Reader The Support-A-Reader Program for students in Year 1 to Year 6 is going to begin this term. The program will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The aim of this program is to give children who need additional assistance with their reading, the opportunity to read regularly with a supportive adult on a one-to-one basis. We would like to invite parents to volunteer to be involved in this very valuable program. A commitment of one hour per week or more would be required. Full training will be given. The success of the program relies on the generosity of our volunteers. For further information or if you are interested in being a part of this program, please speak to or email Fiona Drew at [email protected].
ICAS Competition ICAS testing is a voluntary testing process that parents can choose for their children to sit in Year 3 -6. It is run by the University of
NSW who also set the entry fees. This year, the tests will include Science, English and Mathematics at a cost of $8.80 per test. Permission forms have been sent home. If you wish for your child/children to participate please return this form to the office by March 17th. Payment can be made via Qkr. Please see Mrs Drew for any further details or visit www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas.
Lockyer Valley Professional Learning Cluster Year 3-6 Teachers from OLGC joined with other schools in the South West Cluster last Monday afternoon for an afternoon of Professional
Development at St Mary's Laidley. They met in class
groupings and shared their planning and how they use the Gradual Release of Responsibility within the teaching of literacy. Some great ideas were shared and collaboration between teachers from other schools ensure we continue to build capacity in our staff. Thank you to those staff members for your dedication and attendance. Early Years Network Cluster OLGC Teachers from Prep to Year 2 joined with teachers in the South West Cluster last Wednesday for an afternoon of Professional Development at Sacred Heart, Booval. Each teacher was asked to bring a rich text with them to share with other teachers how they used this within their classroom and what effective activities and lessons could be taught in conjunction with the text. Thank you to the staff who attended this afternoon and for the efforts you put into being prepared. Education Officers Visit This week, our three Education Officers from Brisbane Catholic Education joined us again to work with our Prep - Year 2 teachers, Mrs Randal (EAL-D) and Mrs Wearing (Literacy Support). These teachers were released to spend time to evaluate and activate student learning involvement in short, ongoing responsive cycles of learning and teaching in English. As part of our commitment to the Excellent Learning and Teaching strategy from BCE and our inclusion in the Accelerated Literacy Learning project, teachers and support staff are collaborating and planning together to ensure we are planning from the Australian Curriculum and using the Effective and Expected practices in our teaching. Parent/Teacher interviews - Term One Week 9 It is our hope that you will have several opportunities to view/experience and discuss your child’s learning and development throughout the year through the class information night, samples of work sent home, informal catch-ups with the class teacher, ‘celebration of learning’ sessions, formal reports and interviews. As we approach the end of Term 1, the class teachers at Our Lady of Good Counsel would like the opportunity to discuss with you the progress for your child at this relatively early point in the school year. The purpose of this interview is to summarise trends in student academic achievement, effort and application, social skills and behaviour during the first term from both the teacher’s and parent’s perspectives. Teachers and parents meet together to identify what is going well and where there might be room for improvement. The occasion of the interview is an opportunity for purposeful discussion and to develop the partnership between home and school. Thank you for taking the time to meet with your class teacher and nurture this important partnership we share in educating your children.

FROM THE PARISH 2nd Sunday of Lent 12 March 2017 Year A
A REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL THIS WEEK ‘Listen to Him’ The Transfiguration is a revelation of the Person of Jesus, of his profound reality. The eye witnesses of the event- the three Apostles were enfolded in a bright cloud which in the Bible always heralds God’s presence – and they heard a voice saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (Mt 17:5). This event prepared the disciples for the Paschal Mystery of Jesus: to endure the terrible trial of the Passion and also to understand properly the luminous event of the Resurrection. In the Transfiguration God reveals himself in Jesus to the Apostles. Therefore those who wish to know God must contemplate the face of Jesus, his face transfigured: Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father’s holiness and mercy. On Mount Sinai Moses received the revelation of God’s will: the Ten Commandments. Elijah on the mountain received the divine Revelation of a mission he was to undertake. Jesus, on the contrary already knew the will of the Father. Rather it was the Apostles, who heard God’s voice in the cloud, commanding: “Listen to him”. God’s will was fully revealed in the Person of Jesus. Anyone who wants to live in accordance with God’s will must follow Jesus, listen to him and accept his words, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, acquire a deep knowledge of them. Let us listen to the voice of God and discern his will for us during this Holy season of Lent. God bless you all! Fr.Noyichan MCBS.

Does your child have type 1 diabetes?
Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of type 1
diabetes and families struggle with illness management and children’s
behavioural and emotional adjustment.
Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting Program offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. This innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour.
Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete three sets of assessment measures (questionnaire and family observation) over a 6 month period, as part of the study. Contact Dr Amy Mitchell on (07) 3346 1202 or email [email protected] or visit http://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/t1diabetes for more information.
