  • ASSAM SOCIETY OF BANGALORE

From the desk of Chief Advisor,

    Assam Society of Bangalore-

    Dear Friends,

It gives me immense pride, pleasure and privilege to take this

opportunity to wish each one of you a very happy Rongali Bihu

2013, a very prosperous Assamese New Year and to welcome you all

to Bohagi Adoroni 2013, the 15th Annual Bihu Celebrations of the Assam Society of Bangalore.

This is the time of the year wherein the entire Assamese community comes alive in absolute

abandon, it is the time of the year when great gaiety goes hand in hand with great glamour

showcased through exquisite new designs of the muga and paator mekhala chadors, it is the

time of year for renewing old ties even so new ones are getting tied, it is the time of the year

for bahi, pepa and the dhol to create music magic, the time of the year to dress up & dance to

be a Bihu Konwori, the time of the year to gorge on delectable pithas and larus, time to forget and forgive, time to take blessings from our elders while enjoying the proceedings with

our peers; friends lets welcome Rongali Bihu 2013 with great fun, frolic and fervor at

    Bangalore.

The past year had been a tad tumultuous for the Assamese community here in Bangalore with

the exodus issue becoming a significant one, however, with the support of the Karnataka

Government officials and in particular the Bangalore City Police Department, the entire

situation was quickly brought under control effectively and efficiently. It gives me immense

pleasure to inform that Assam Society of Bangalore played a pivotal role in this entire

episode and worked very closely with the Government machinery in managing the situation.

Rongali Bihu is our new year wherein we forget and forgive the past and look forward to

welcoming fresh beginnings in our lives. At Assam Society of Bangalore too this is the same

philosophy wherein in the coming New Year we will be working towards driving peace,

progress and prosperity at all times. We will be looking to have many more socio-cultural and

youth welfare initiatives to maximize the potential of our people as well as provide

opportunities to be responsibly engaged for the betterment of our community.

Happy Rongali Bihu & Joi Ai Axom !

    Warm Bihu Wishes

    simanta

  • ASSAM SOCIETY OF BANGALORE

From the Presidents desk, Assam Society of Bangalore- I take this opportunity to wish everybody a very happy Bohag Bihu in advance , a very happy Assamese new year and

look forward to celebrating the great occasion of 15th

    Bihu

    Celebration in Bangalore with ASOB.

Assam Society of Bangalore (ASOB) have come a very long way from our inception way back in 1982 . ASOB is a non-

political, non-governmental, socio cultural organization with the

aim of bringing together the people of Assam and the Northeast of India in Bangalore with an

effort to showcase the rich culture and heritage of Assamese & Northeast people and in the

process building the co-ordination between the people of Karnataka, Assam and Northeast in

general, irrespective of cast, creed and customs. The Assam Society of Bangalore shall

always strive and endeavor to achieve an atmosphere of creating a home away from home amongst the inhabitants of Assam and Northeast in Bangalore.

The objective of celebrating the Grand Bohagi Adaroni is to raise funds for building a dedicated Assam Society Club House in a time span of 5-6years in Bangalore. This Club

House shall also function as a placement cell for the people (read students) of Assam who are

pursuing higher and professional education in Bangalore by leveraging the very enterprising

Assamese Community. The Society Club House will also be able to help and support people

of Assam coming into Bangalore seeking Healthcare services by providing all necessary

    information.

In the past and even now, we have done and taken up the cause of many social activities like blood donation camps, placement camps, helping orphanages ,recent North East issues

etc. Apart from these social responsibilities , ASOB has also created many opportunities and

platforms for emerging talents from Assam and Northeast to showcase themselves like inter

college cricket tournament and freshers meet from new students of Northeast of India.

ASOB also organized a homage and a tribute function in memory of the late music maestro, Dr Bhupen Hazarika in first half of 2012.

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all my core society members, general members,

sponsors, donors and well wishers of Assam Society of Bangalore without whose effort and

    co-operation this 15th

Bihu couldnt have been possible. I thank all of you on behalf of Assam Society of Bangalore for supporting us.

I also take this opportunity to appeal to all to come forward, extend your support and lend a helping hand towards ASOB and its continuing efforts towards achieving its varied

    objectives.

    Samarjeet Ghosh President.

    English Article-

Bihu : A FestivalA IdentityA Celebration For All !!! Dr Simanta Sharma ------------------------------------------

Bihu is perhaps the single most

    important festival of Assam

    celebrated by the entire Assamese

diaspora around the world that not

    only defines an Assamese

individual but also gives him/her the

    distinct unique identity of belonging

from the beautiful state of Assam.

Bihu is celebrated not only with

delight and joviality but also with

passion and vehemence to mark the

change of season. The history of the

    significant and noteworthy

celebration dates back to 3500 B.C.

At that point, it used to be a month

    long celebration.

Bihu basically is an astounding Assamese dance form accompanied

    with Bihugeet (Bihu Songs) that

mark the essence of the pleasurable

    and congenial occasion. The dance

forms which are the souls of the

    traditional festival were only

restricted and constrained to the men

    previously during the olden times.

However, with the passage of time

    women too stated participating and

came out of their homes to dance

and celebrate the festival with their

male companions. In fact there is a

form of Bihu (jeng bihu) wherein

only women dance and only women

are allowed to watched. The name

"jeng" comes from the fact that in

earlier days women in the villages

used to surround the place of their

performance with sticks dug into the

ground called jeng in Assamese. It is

also called gos tolor bihu (Bihu

    beneath tree).

The word Bihu is derived from the

language of the Dimasa people, one

of the earliest known tribes to have

resided in Assam, who have been

    agrarian since time immemorial.

Their supreme god is Brai Shibrai or

Father Shibrai. The First crops of the

season are offered to Brai Shibrai

    while wishing for peace and

prosperity. So Bi means "to ask" and

Shu means "peace and prosperity" in

the world. Over a period of time the

    word BISHU gradually became Bihu

    to accommodate linguistic

    preferences. The other suggestion is

that "Bi" means "to ask" and "Hu"

means "to give" and so came BIHU.

In a year there are three Bihu

festivals in Assam - in the months of

    Bohaag (Baisakh, the middle of

    April), Maagh (the middle of

    January), and Kaati (Kartik, the

    middle of October). Each Bihu

coincides with a distinctive phase in

    the farming calendar. The most

important and colourful of the three

Bihu festivals is the Spring festival

"Bohag Bihu" or Rongali Bihu celebrated in the middle of April.

    Rongali Bihu (mid-April, also called

Bohag Bihu), the most popular Bihu,

celebrates the onset of the Assamese

New Year (around April 14-15) and

the coming of Spring. This marks

the first day of the Hindu solar

calendar and is also observed in

  • 45

    Bengal, Manipur, Nepal, Orissa,

    Punjab, Kerala and Tamil Nadu

    though called by different names.

It's a time of merriment and feasting

and continues, in general, for seven

days. The farmers prepare the fields

for cultivation of paddy and there is

a feeling of joy around. The women

    make pitha, larus (traditional food

made of rice, jaggery & coconut)

and Jolpan which gives the real

essence of the season. The first day

of the bihu is called Goru Bihu or

cow bihu, where the cows are

    washed and worshipped, which falls

on the last day of the previous year,

usually on April 14. This is followed

by Manuh (human) bihu on April

15, the New Year Day. This is the

day of getting cleaned up, wearing

    new cloths, wishing family &

    friends, taking blessings from the

elders in the family, celebrating and

getting ready for the new year with

fresh vigor. The third day is Gokhai

    (Gods) bihu, statues of Gods,

    worshiped in all households are

cleaned and worshiped asking for a

    smooth new year.

Rongali Bihu is also a fertility

festival, where the bihu dance with

    its sensuous movements using the

hips, arms, etc., by the young

women call out to celebrate their

fertility. In this aspect, the bihu

dance can also be called a mating

ritual by the young men and women.

    Another very important aspect of

Bihu is called Husori, wherein village elders move from household

to households singing carols, also in

the style of bihu geets, called

    husoris. The carol singing starts

usually at the village naamghar (place of worship in Assam) and

    then proceeds to individual

households. The Husori singers announces their arrival at the gate of

a house with drum beats. The

    singers are traditionally welcomed

into the courtyard where they sing

the husori songs and perform a ring

dance. At the end of the

    performance they are thanked with

an offering dakshina of paan (betel

leaf) tamul (areka nut) in a xorai

    (brass dish with stand), whereupon

the singers bless the household for

the coming year. If there is

bereavement in the family, or the

family does not invite the husori

singers due to an illness, the husori

    band offers blessings from

podulimukh (the entrance gate of the

    household) and move on. Generally

    the singers are all male.

    Traditionally Bihu Dances used to

be held in open fields wherein young

unmarried men and women attired in

    traditional golden silk muga come

and dance the bihu and sing bihu

songs. However, with the passage of

time, this form of open bihu known

as Mukoli Bihu started disappearing and the Modern Bihu

organized in a stage and a pandal

    took over.

    The Modern Bihutoli Bihu:- The

rural festival made its transition to

urban life when it was first time

brought to the stage in Lataxil field

in Guwahati by the Guwahati Bihu

    Sanmilani in 1962, promoted by

    leading citizens like Radha Govinda

Baruah and others. Unlike the rural

version, the dancers danced on a

  • 46

makeshift elevated stage in an open

area that came to be known as a

    Bihutoli. Many such Bihutolis have

sprouted since then in Guwahati and

    other urban areas across entire

    Assam. The performances are not

confined to the bihu dance form, but

    may incorporate all forms of

    theatrical performances to keep the

    audience enthralled well into the

    early hours. Performances could

    include standup comedy, to concerts

by solo singers. The stage form of

bihu has today become the mainstay

bihu and the model has been

replicated across the globe by the

    Assamese diaspora.

The Bihu Songs & Dance:- The

songs of Bihu are composed in

couplets and each of them invariably

    depicts dissimilar emotions and at

the same time the songs are

    accompanied with characteristic and

unique dance forms. This is the

charm of this fantastic festival. The

elegance and style of these songs are

    noteworthy. The language is quite

    simple and straightforward. The

popularity of the Bihu songs has

now crossed the boundaries of states

and nation. Every year new songs

are out in the market. It shows the

    popularity and acceptance of the

    special and melodious music of

    Bihu.

Bihu dance is performed along with

    the unique and striking Assamese

    folk music. Assamese customs and

    ethnicity are visible on the

    dance forms. Drummers who play

drums or dhol, are the most

    important and significant musicians.

The dhol is played with a stick and a

    palm. Drummers perform differently

with variety of rhythms and musical

tunes at various segments of the

    performances. These metrical and

    musical compositions, called xeus,

    are conventionally codified.

    Drummers enter into the dancing

premise in a queue and before

    entering into the performance arena

they play a short and vigorous

    rhythm. The mohor xingor pepa

    (rhino horn trumpet) is played

    generally in the beginning by

a single player and without any

doubt it sets the mood of the dance

and carnival. Some of the other

    important instruments that are part

of a Bihu Song & dance routine are

    taal (cymbals); toka (a bamboo

clapper); baanhi (the flute); xutuli (a

type of clay whistle) and gogona (a

    vibrating reed instrument similar to

the jews harp made up of bamboo). Significance of Bihu:- The biggest

aspect of Bihu is that it is not a

    religious festival hence people from

any caste, creed or religion can

celebrate it together. Bihu as a

    festival enables people to come

closer to one another, forget and

    forgive old rivalries and goads

everybody to begin life afresh in a

fresh new year. It has the uncanny

power to break the shackle and bring

all the people together on a

propitious fiesta of fun, gaiety and

frolic. The premise is open for all.

Bihus are attached with the souls of

the greeneries and soaring hills of

    Assam. Bihu welcomes all, Bihu

celebrates all, Bihu Brings Alive All

    Home a place where

my heart resides Nafisa Ahmed KUMARSWAMY LAYOUT

    ------------------------------------------

Home is a place where my

yesteryears are buried and where my

heart will reside always. It is very

    difficult to tear ourselves from

    hometown where our family has

roots of several generations. 6 years

back, I decided to move out to a

place that I knew a little bit about.

Buoyed up by the thrill of challenges

that I was going to embrace very

soon. After my 12th I planned to

move Bangalore as it is one of the

    fastest growing cosmopolitan cities

in Asia. It is a home to many top

    companies in India and offers

    plethora of job opportunities. After

    completing graduation, I planned to

    pursue MBA from Bangalore itself

and then joined one of the largest

    FMCG Company.

Over the year I grew up, met people

    from diverse culture, diverse

thinkers, and adapting myself to the

    new place which floated my

personality to the top in terms of

    mannerism, quality and opinion. But

    one thing always lingers though

    unspoken that I miss home

    indefinitely. As I become fully

    preoccupied with the daily routine,

just realize the fact that life back

home is going on without me. I miss

    my parents terribly every moment,

my friends and my entire family.

    Occasions like Birthdays, weddings,

holidays in short all the memorable

gatherings I miss a lot which

saddens me a lot. Apparently, I just

realize that much has happened in

my absence and so much has

    changed. Circumstances like visiting

    a grocery

store to paying off electricity bills

and searching a new house all makes

us feel that home is where comfort

resides and where our heart is store.

    Fundamentally these are the

    situations which have altered and

    refined me more.

In reality excitement of being home

will never fade. Joyous phase finally

begins when my annual leave gets

    approve from my manager.

    Countdown begins when I start

counting the number of days left to

be at my home land. There are

certain special things that I never

miss out to do when I am there

which begins by hogging my Moms luscious recipes starting from

    appetizing Chicken Biryani, Bhoka

    Pitha, Narikolor Laru to Masor

Tenga and the reason of gaining

extra weight once I am home .I dont miss out driving by G.S.Road and

    Fancy Bazaar where I occasionally

go for shopping at different stores

    and my all time favourite

    Pantaloons.

Today I earned the fact that living in

a new place is a beautiful learning

experience, which has given me the

gift of freedom, a new beginning

with the curiosity to explore more

.But every good things comes with a

price and the price I am paying

today is the fact I miss Assam every

    moment.

    My journey with

BIHU Sharmistha Pooja Miss Talent hunt 2010

    Assam society of Bangalore

    ---------------------------------------

Oi hati xherualu lihiri bonote , o ghura xherualu ronot , pai

    xherualu xhorogor mukuta o, oi

sutalor dubori bonot.. Bihu has been a very integral part of every

    Assamese people. Every Assamese

person enjoy and love celebrating it.

My journey with bihu have been a

very memorable one. My guru was my grandfather who taught me

what is bihu? What is Assamese culture actually? He taught me how

to dance, how to sing bihu naam and a lot He used to makepepa, gogonawhich we have used .He was a great dhulia who has a good name in Assam. He

was inspired from his elder brother

Leela Gogoi who was an author, and former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha. He was the author of many books such as Bihu geet bonghuxha, Noi boi jai, bikudor boruah biya. Nila khamor Sithi and many more. Not only these he

was also involved in ahom history,

comic, and very much interested in

writing songs songs. I have lost both

these people at a very early age of

my life. Still lot of things were left

to be acquired from them. My

parents are also a great support who

helped me in learning my culture,

tradition, etc. And now in Bangalore

Assam Society of Bangalore has given me a chance to get related

    with the Assamese culture, Bihu

    though staying a thousands of

    kilometes away from Assam.

Society has always been a support

for enliving the culture. It has given

me a lot of Assamese friends and

itself gives me a feeling of family. Assam society is actually a family in

    Bangalore which help every

    A.ssamese in every possible aspect.

At first when I stepped in Bangalore

I felt as if I m so lonely and use to

search people nearby if I could find

any Assamese. Then after some days

I got a call from a member of Assam

society who invited me for the

freshers party. I thought that its just

a party and went there but as soon as

I entered the hall I had a great

feeling as people around me were

talking in assamese. That was an

awesome day which I had achieved

    just because of the society.

    Nowadays some people feel

    ashamed to introduce themselves as

an assamese, but I dont know why? They should feel proud a be a part of

this wide culture and the beautiful

Assam. But still there are some

people who gets stick to their culture

even though staying away from their

natives. Bihu is now recognized in

the national level but I feel it can be

recognized and can be given respect

in the international level if every

assamese supports and put the effort.

    English Poem

    NATURE'S SPLENDOR Pranesh Chakraborty Kamanahalli,

    Bangalore

    --------------------

Beauty! the word which I say

which everyone thought of in a

    special way,

The way indeed is a special

Its through the bounties of nature.

    Yeah; beauty starts from nature

    which makes us derive pleasure

When we glance at it in times of

    leisure

As if it's been life's treasure.

    Nature manifests itself in myriad

    ways

    Its attractions are infinite,

Nothing in nature is left to chance

Evoke in man's feeling to enhance.

    Nature's silent & eloquent presence

lessens the pains of human's sense

Its every creation has a majestic

    pinnacle

    To make us ecstatically startle.

    -----------------

I AM SO SORRY Jyoti Prasad Barua -----------------------------

    I am familiar now, what

    Never I was to you;

    Only a 'smile' was

With me, but never I could

    Share that with you, for

    What I am so sorry!

    I am familiar now, what

    Never I was to you;

'Fog' came between you and me

    And my divine heart could

    Not feel your beat, for

    What I am so sorry!

It was not I, who did

    Not wish your

    Smiling face to me, but

    The 'fog' was the reason.

At last, thanks, you erased it

Unfortunately, it was too late, for

    What I am so sorry!

Good bye! Good bye! Good bye!

My friends, as it is getting

Dark and dark around me, I

    Therefore, have to wish

    You 'NIGHT' so soon, for

    What I am so sorry!

I am, now, leaving you as

    You were my _ _ _ _ _

    Someone! Someone! Someone!

    With my 'Broken Heart'

    And 'Teary Eyes', for

    What I am so sorry!!!

    SAMI DIRECT

SAMI as the name is synonymous with health

naturally being a pioneer in the nutraceutical

field and a path breaker in the integrated

medicine industry with deep roots in research,

development and promotion of the natural

    health concept since 25 years.
