FROM FATHER CHUCK We hear two powerful healing stories in the gospel today and in both Jesus refers to the faith of the people. First, to a woman who risks perhaps her very life by touching Jesus, knowing that to touch him, as a woman, and as a sick person, might subject her to condemnation by the crowd. Jesus says, “Your faith has saved you.” Second, to a fa-ther whose daughter is dying Jesus says, “Just have faith.” While the stories are encouraging and filled with the hope of healing and a “joyful ending” we know that sometimes we have faith and things do not seem to work out the same. We pray for that sick child or for our own healing and when healing doesn’t happen, we can think, “What did I do wrong? Is my faith not strong enough?” It is then we must remember that Jesus himself prayed to his Father to take his cup away and it was not granted. It is sometimes beyond us to know or grasp God’s way for, as St. Paul says, “We walk by faith, not be sight.” It is a faith that is strengthened when we come together as Church in Word and Sacrament. The woman risks it all when she reaches out to Jesus in faith. We’re challenged to do the same, remembering that the Lord is always with us. Someone who has been sharing her faith with the children and families of our parish is Tammie Sheely. Tam-mie has been on staff as Director of Religious Education here at the Cathedral for five years, walking many of our children through their First Communion & many teens through Confirmation. Prior to her role on staff, she volun-teered as director and as a catechist for a long time. After these many years, much prayer and discernment, Tammie has decided to step down from this position effective July 1. I’m sure it will be a sadness to many to see Tammie leave. She has been a guiding spirit and light in the parish for a long time. She also has many other things going on in her life and deserves all our love and support as she shifts gears to continue those and take on new endeavors. On behalf of the entire parish, I say a big THANK YOU to Tammie for all she has done. We hope to have a reception for Tammie in the near future, so please do stay tuned to the timing of that which will be announced as soon as we get it set. Blessings to you, Tammie! Next weekend we’ll be expanding capacity in the church a bit. We’ll be able to remove the ribbons in the two main, center sections of the church that have blocked every other pew for social distancing. As our vaccine rates increase & virus rates decrease, the need for social distancing is going down. While we strongly encourage every-one to continue to take precautions, first & foremost getting fully vaccinated, it is important to recognize that condi-tions are much better than they were. We’ll continue distancing in the side sections of the church for those who are more comfortable with distancing between the pews with only two persons to a pew. In the center sections, we’ll keep the number of persons within each pew to a 3-feet distancing at this time. But opening every pew in those sec-tions will allow us to accommodate more people as they return to church and as we move into our summer tourist season. As always, households may sit together. We still ask all those who have not been fully vaccinated to contin-ue to wear a mask. The occurrence of coronavirus variants that are even more highly transmittable makes that all the more real. There are some who are wisely taking the precaution of wearing a mask even if they’re fully vaccinat-ed when gathering in large groups, such as church. Our Communion ministers will continue to wear masks when distributing Communion. As a result of every pew being used in the large, center sections of the church, we’ll resume the Communion pro-cession towards the altar for those sections rather than bringing Communion to the pews. You’ll note tape on the floor down the center aisle marking good distancing as you come to Communion. Please do your best to respect that spacing. Those on the side sections may remain in their pew & Communion will be brought to you. Last, but not least, I am reaching out to all members of the parish to assist with hospitality, greeting people as they come to the church as well as assisting with seating, collections, and the like. If you have been a part of these ministries in the past or would like to begin doing so, please do let me know. I think it is important for us to create a welcoming and supportive environment as people come to the church, so if you can help achieve that, WE NEED YOU!

BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL THIS 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME!

This weekend we honor and pray for two parishes in the Diocese of Reno whose feast days are approaching: Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Hawthorne and St. Paul Catholic Church in Winnemucca.

More than a century ago, the Catholic popula on of Hawthorne was likely served by priests from Bodie, California and other small towns, da ng back to 1877. Once Hawthorne became the loca on of the Naval Ammuni on Depot in 1929, the pastor from Yerington would make occasional trips to Hawthorne to celebrate mass in private homes or a local hall. In 1936 Fr. Mar-

n Duckham, pastor at Holy Family in Yerington, received a grant from the na onal Catholic Extension Society to move a small church from the town of Mason to Hawthorne. In June a group of Catholic women formed an Altar Society and many be-came charter members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. During World War II the popula on of Hawthorne grew

tremendously and Mass was celebrated in the church every Sunday. By 1942 Our Lady of Perpetual Help a ained the status of a parish, with Fr. Gerard Fanning as its first pastor. Under Fr. Fanning a new church was built in 1948 and religious sisters would come from Elko to teach the children. Un-der the various pastors over the decades a rectory was purchased and the church was remodeled and updated. In more recent mes, the town of Hawthorne has dwindled and the parish no longer has a resident pastor. Thus the pastor in Yerington is also the pastor in Hawthorne. Once again, mass is celebrated weekly by the pastor from Yerington and a strong lay leadership con nues to guide and keep the parish alive. The memorial of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is normally celebrated on June 27, however it is bumped this year with the Sunday celebra on. Congratula ons to the dedicated parishioners of Our Lady’s and to Fr. Jesus Ballesteros, their pastor. Tuesday, June 29, is the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul and so we also honor and li in pray-er today St. Paul Catholic Church. From its early days in the 1860’s the trading post of Winnemucca became a place where mass was celebrated. Although it remained a mission sta on, St. Paul Catholic Church was built and dedicated in 1884, a small white frame, with a barn nearby to keep the hors-es of those who came to worship. Through the 15-year leadership of Fr. Hugo Meisekothen, a new, concrete, Spanish mission-style church was built and dedicated in 1924 and s ll stands today. As St. Paul’s history notes, “It was the finest and largest church built in Nevada a er the erec on of St. Thomas Aquinas in Reno.” It included a parish hall underneath the church. A rectory and mul -purpose building were added to the campus in the 1980’s. St. Paul’s serves the town of almost 10,000 and welcomes people of many different ethnici es The pastor of St. Paul’s, Fr. Jose Sobar-zo, also celebrates masses monthly at St. Alfonsus Mission in Para-dise Valley and Sacred Heart Mission in McDermi . Congratula ons to the good people of St. Paul Catholic Church and to their staff and pastor!

We li both of these communi es in prayer this weekend!
