    ABSTRACT

    Molasses (the secondary product of sugar industry) discharged to watercourse has caused environmental pollution and has negative impact on aquaticorganisms. A toxicity test of molasses on common carp (C yp rin us ca rp io Linn)has been conducte. This research aims to know lethal and sub lethal toxicity ofmolasses on respiration of common carps (c. carpio L.). Static bioassay wasemployed to measure the lethal toxicity. Meanwhile, the method used for sublethal toxicity was experimental method with Group Randomized Design(GRD) with four concentrations (0%,0,1%, 0,3% and 0,5%). The test fish usedin this experiment was C. carpio var. Majalaya, with weight 2-4 gr and 100-110gr. The observation was done on day 0 and 7 with 6 replicates. Parametersmeasured were oxygen consumption rate, and opercular rate. The resultsshowed that molasses was categorized as almost non toxic with LC50 96 hoursvalue 1,072% (10.720 ppm). The result of sub lethal test showed that theincrease in molasses concentration decreased oxygen consumption rate andincreased opercular rate of common carp. Increase in molasses concentrationgave significant effect on the increase in opercular rate.
