The TAIPEI CYCLE d&i awards for the past six years have joined companies big and small to show their best. For many start-ups, it’s their big chance to get honest appraisals for brilliant ideas from the best brains in the trade. These d&i awards are co-organized by TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) and TBA (Taiwan Bicycle Association), and executed by iF DESIGN ASIA Ltd. These awards coupled with TAIPEI CYCLE 2017 will long continue to inspire and connect the industry.

The seven-judge jury this year comprises experts from Germany, the US, and Taiwan, who have profound experience either in cycling industry or industrial design. Contestants’ works were evaluated based on the following criteria: Degree o f Innovat ion /Crea t iv i t y, Qua l i t y o f Des ign , Workmanship, Material, Sustainability, Functionality, Utility Value, Safety, Ergonomics and Universal Design. Al l these features – p lus a growing presence of E-bikes – combine to set the pace in making the cycle lighter, smarter and more efficient.

And this quest for progress helps to explain how the TAIPEI CYCLE d&i awards have grown into a global affair which attracted 154 entries from 16 countries. This year 57 entries are taking home a prestigious TAIPEI CYCLE d&i award. These honors include seven gold awards for the most outstanding products and a Gold Award — Young Enterprise for an aspiring start-up company. All winning products gain heightened profile by being exhibited at TAIPEI CYCLE, and at CosmoBike 2017 in Verona, Italy.

「台北國際自行車展創新設計獎 (TAIPEI CYCLE design and innovation awards)」今年邁入第 6 屆，不但是台北

自行車展之重要亮點，更在節能減碳的世界潮流中

引領自行車產業創新，成為全球關注的重要獎項。

此甄選活動，由中華民國對外貿易發展協會與臺灣

自行車輸出業同業公會共同主辦，委請 iF 藝符設計有限公司

執行。

本屆評審邀集德國、美國與台灣 7 位擁有自行車或工業

設計實務經驗的專家，針對 154 件來自全球 16 個國家

或地區的參賽作品逐一評選，最後計有 57 件作品獲獎，

包括 7 件「金質獎」及 1 件「金質獎 — 新創企業」。

從今年的參賽作品可觀察到自行車的設計思考愈來愈注重與

環境及使用者對話，例如參賽品項更重視環保材質及製程，

且更關注介面設計，使騎乘更加簡單、便利；將 IOT 物聯網

功能整合至車體的智慧科技設計也更普遍。同時，電動車仍

是重要的發展趨勢之一，今年參賽的電動車外觀設計趨於簡

潔、俐落，且功能更多元。

連續 6 年的聲譽累積，讓世界看見台灣自行車的創新

設計實力，本屆得獎作品將首次登上義大利國際自行車展 (CosmoBike)，與來自全球優秀的設計作品同場

競豔，不僅讓台灣做為自行車王國的美名遠播，更有助得獎

廠商爭取更多海外商機，拓展業務網絡。

今年是台北國際自行車展第 30 週年。自 1988 年起，每逢

三月製造商與設計師齊聚台北尋找自行車產業最新的創新技術。

想了解全球化的最佳典範以及跨國與跨區域協同開發的成

功案例，您可以著眼於台灣的自行車產業。過去 30 年來，這個太平洋上的小島成為永續成長與環保生活的範例。儘管

一開始並不起眼，台灣現今已發展為全球最大的自行車產業

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Taipei Cycle Show. Since 1988, manufacturers and designers come to Taipei in March to celebrate the latest innovations in bicycle technology.

I f y o u a r e l o o k i n g f o r a n e x a m p l e o f h o w globalization and the cooperation between countries and regions can succeed, you might start with Taiwan's bicycle industry. For over 30 years, this tiny island off the coast of China has been a model of sustainable growth and a 'green' lifestyle. From modest beginnings, the bicycle industry in Taiwan has grown to one of the largest in the world. It is not just about manufacturing: Taiwan is an incredible specimen of innovative energy and growth. At the Taipei Cycle Show, designers and manufacturers are connected with retailers the world over.

2016 was a challenging year for the bike industry in Taiwan. Despite these difficulties, the industry has weathered the s torm admirably through a combinat ion of perseverance and product excellence.

Set against this backdrop of longstanding success and a tough season, the TAIPEI CYCLE d&i awards 2017 celebrated its sixth year with 57 winning entries. Eight of these were truly outstanding, winning the coveted TAIPEI CYCLE d&i gold award.

Stephan EsserSQLab | Germany

Stephan Esser grew up in Copenhagen/Denmark and in several German cities. Now he has been in the bicycle business for more than 25 years. After working as an engineer for the well-known German bike producer Derby Cycle Werke, he started his own company specialized in product design, engineering, sourcing and manufacturing services for bicycles and related products. The projects he worked on not only included mountain and road bikes, but also children's bikes, transportation, electric and folding bikes. In 2016 he joined the German company SQLab which is specialized in ergonomic bicycle products.

Stephan Esser 成長於丹麥哥本哈根及德國幾個城市，他已在自行車產業工作超過 25 年。在德國知名自行車製造

商 Derby Cycle Werke 擔任工程師後，他創立自己的公司，

Norbert Haller

Norbert Haller studied industrial design in cooperation with Audi. In 1998, he began his professional career in the LEV industry (light electric vehicles). Norbert has designed and developed bicycles, pedelecs, e-bikes and e-scooters for customers from all over the world – first as the CEO and then as the director of design at Craftsmen Design in Berlin (Germany). From 2007 to 2012, he was head designer at Ultra Motor Ltd., UK. Today, Norbert is the managing director of IDberlin, based in Berlin. He also sometimes lives and works in Taiwan. Thanks to many years of experience in the LEV industry, he has been able to build an excellent network of contacts in the bike industry.

Moses Hu is the chief product designer in VanMoof, a Dutch bicycle brand special ized in providing the best solution for bicycle commuters. With passion and love for bicycles, he devoted himself to bicycle design after earning an MA Industrial Design at Shih-Chien University. His works are described as innovative and visionary, including electric bikes, single-speed bikes and even accessories and small details. He is, therefore, recognized by many world-renowned design competitions such as iF DESIGN AWARD and Red Dot Design Award.

Norbert Haller 學生時代主修工業設計時即曾與奧迪合作研究。1998 年，他投身輕型電動車產業，展開他的職業生涯。Haller 曾為世界各地的客戶設計和開發自行車、助踩式電動自行車、直接驅動式電動自行車和電動滑板車，並先後擔任德國柏林 Craftsmen Design 執行長與設計總監。

2007 年至 2012 年期間，Haller 於英國 Ultra Motor 公司擔任首席設計師。目前他任職柏林 IDberlin 總經理，也曾因工作需要旅居台灣。由於 Haller 在輕型電動車產業具有多年經驗，因此在自行車產業享有良好的人脈關係。

胡百慶現任 VanMoof 資深產品設計師，VanMoof 是一個為自行車通勤族提供最佳方案的荷蘭品牌。他在取得實踐大學工業設計研究所碩士學位後，旋即投身自行車設計領域。他的設計作品創新且具前瞻性，設計過的產品從電動車、單速車到零配件都有，獲得多項國際設計競賽，如 iF 設計獎與紅點設計獎的肯定。

Mark Stocker is the Managing Director of DDG, a leading consultancy corporation with offices in Taipei and Shanghai. With 20 years of experience in brand strategy and global brand management, he is specialized in working with OEM manufacturers to build their own brands. He has worked along with more than one hundred corporations including many well-known clients in the cycling industry. When he’s not in the office, he can be found riding his road and mountain bikes in the hills surrounding Taipei.

Ken Hsieh is the founder and design director of AOI.CYCLE, a design and development company specialized in handmade stainless steel bicycles in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He keeps abreast with trends in the bicycle market by taking part in design and bicycle events in Europe and around the world. He wishes to bring people the new cycling experience of comfort and beauty, and hopes to catch people’s eyes with AOI.CYCLE products.

史孟康現任 DDG 執行總監，該公司為領導業界的顧問公司，

在台北與上海皆設有辦事處。他在品牌策略及全球品牌管理

擁有 20 年經驗，專門協助代工生產的製造商建立自有品牌。

他與上百家企業合作，其中包含許多知名的自行車品牌。當他不在辦公室，你或許能在台北周遭山嶺看到他騎乘公路

車或登山車的身影。

謝青葑為 AOI.CYCLE 創辦人暨設計總監，其公司位在高雄，

專門生產不鏽鋼自行車。他參加過歐洲及世界其他地方的眾多設計與自行車活動，對自行車業界動態瞭若指掌。他希望如此吸引目光的 AOI.CYCLE，能帶給人們舒適美觀

的自行車新體驗。

Edward Chiang is the Director of Design for Giant Bicycle, a bicycle manufacturer in Taiwan. Chiang earned his degree at New York University and studied Design Management at Parsons School for Design, New York. Chiang is one of the founders of DEM Inc., a brand and design consulting office in Taiwan.

Francois Liang is the General Manager of the Cycling and Health Tech. Industry R&D Center (CHC) in Taichung, Taiwan. The graduate in Naval Architecture Engineering also earned a Doctor degree in Industrial Engineering in 2014. Liang has worked in different capacities in various fields of engineering in the aero and auto industry since 1984. He has been employed at CHC since 1997 – responsible first and foremost for the development of bicycle products. Liang has been involved in the bicycle industry for the past 20 years.

蔣友常任職台灣自行車製造商巨大工業擔任其美學設計中心

經理。蔣先生畢業於紐約大學並且於紐約帕森設計學院攻讀

設計管理，同時也是台灣知名的品牌與設計顧問公司—橙果

設計的創辦人之一。

梁志鴻現任自行車暨健康科技工業研究發展中心總經理，畢業於船舶工程學系的他於 2014 年取得工業工程博士學位，

自 1984 年起即在航空及汽車產業累積豐碩的工業工程經驗。

他自 1997 年起任職於自行車暨健康科技工業研究發展中心，

負責研發頂尖自行車產品，見證自行車產業 20 年來的發展。

The Leopard Pro is a carbon fiber aero road bike with fully hidden wires and competition-level performance. We used the latest technologies to help you train and track your progress in real-time. Numerical data including speed, cadence, slope, and heart rate are displayed in real-time. We also provide an external port for the head light and camera. To achieve completely hidden brake wiring was the biggest challenge, which was accomplished after 8 months of hard work by our team. Aerodynamic design elements which are incorporated into the design include hidden brakes and a bike frame to reduce friction and drag. Material challenge: A lighter and stiffer frame.

Built-in Lever Design

Through axles play an important part in the bicycle industry; not only replacing quick releases in MTB and Fatbikes, but also in road bikes. To ensure easy installation, Fulchee is providing a new concept for operating the axle. While the axle is not in operation, the lever is completely hidden inside the axle body; in this position, the appearance of the bike will be concise and it will also increase the reliability of the locking system by avoiding impact with the lever. Unlike other through axles available on the market, this design omits an allen key or a special spanner wrench required to operate the axle.

筒軸式快拆已是自行車零組件的重要角色，除了登山車、

雪地車大量使用之外，公路車也逐步採用，取代傳統式

Bicycle Tools

Bicycles have evolved into internal routing. It is not only about the esthetics, it can also improve riding efficiency by reducing turbulence; but the assembly required additional time and labor. To improve efficiency and allow more people to have a better riding experience, we invented the internal routing tool; its compact shape makes it simple to use, and the self-contained design makes storage easy. The product has two adapters which can be stored within the tool alone with the cable, housing, hydraulic hose, and an e-shifting wire. The flexible lead wire and pipe with a magnetic end can simplify difficult routing angles and be stored within the tool when not in use.

Bicycle Rack and Panniers

The Tailfin Carbon Rack and Waterproof Panniers allow cyclists to commute or tour on the road bikes they love. Weighing only 650g per pannier and 350g for the rack, the patented design is engineered to fit almost any road bike, without any tools and just in seconds. The product is certified to carry up to 18kg (ISO11243). Until now, carrying "stuff'' whilst riding has always been a compromise: backpacks are only suitable for short distances and light loads; existing racks and panniers are heavy, unsightly, prone to rattling, and incompatible with modern road bikes. Tailfin is a complete redesign of a bike accessory which has remained almost unchanged for 50 years.

Bicycle

The Xelius SL is the efficient and lightweight racing machine of choice for the FDJ cycling team. The innovative design where the rear triangle is attached to the top tube instead of the seat tube reduces the bike’s weight and improves riding comfort; it is something that's not often requested by pro riders, but it’s essential for long hours in the saddle! The Di2 battery is also cleverly integrated inside a support close to the BB, ensuring a lower centre of gravity for improved efficiency when standing on the pedals. Shifting in our new system is controlled by a thumb-activated unit that uses only one lever; this design uses two unique motions to initiate up or down shifts, providing lightning-quick and intuitive gear changes — push the lever forward to shift down and push the lever inward to shift up to a higher gear. With the all thumb activation, the index and middle fingers are now free to apply more consistent power to the brake lever, increasing precision and improving control. When riding on a varied terrain, as many as four downshifts can be made at once to ensure the ability to maintain cadence while climbing.

The Lauf Grit is an efficient suspension solution for CX and gravel bikes, making them much more capable and comfortable in a lightweight package of only 900g. Lauf Grit does not require any maintenance; therefore long gravel rides, dust, mud, heat, and cold temperatures will not cause any problems. The fork is designed around current CX and gravel bike geometries. Rake of 47mm and A-C of 409mm (with 6mm of sag accounted for) to maintain the steering characteristics of a 45mm rake and 395mm A-C rigid fork. Innova has developed a patented integration technology to make a tire made of special mono-chafer fabric by vulcanization together and form a space between them to act as a tubeless function after inflation. A special valve is used for inflation; in addition, sealant can be injected into this space through the valve without contamination. The motor, known as the clutch-type electrical driving device is embedded inside the tube in order to reach optimum bike design. The bike has been adapted to fit the tube motor and to look like a regular bike at the same time. The tube motor is a mid-drive motor; it is positioned at the bottom bracket axial, which combines with the regular bike motion to form a complete derailleur system. The motor is easy to install and remove; it also provides a more even weight distribution compared to traditional hub motors.

The carQon is Accell Group’s new holistic design approach to a high-end cargo bike. The new carQon cargo bike is extremely easy to handle when driving around corners. There is a patented carving mechanism underneath the frame. It is like riding a normal bicycle where you use your body to control the steering rather than actually turning the handlebar. The carQon bike is equipped with a Brose high torque motor for maximum torque and performance. The battery is the latest version of Protanium's patented in-the-frame battery. Different versions of the carQon are available with different gear options and drivelines to choose from.
