KRISTALLNACHT

The Monday, Thursday and Monday preceding Rosh Chodesh Kislev are the days observed according to our minhag as בה''ב, (Taanios Sheini Chamishi VeSheini), as days of prayer and fasting during which special Selichos are said.

This year, the anniversary of Kristallnacht, 16 Marcheshvan, was the Thursday before Taanis Sheini Kammo. It was on the 16th of Marcheshvan 5699, eighty-one years ago, that the Nazi furor destroyed almost all the synagogues in Germany. Countless Sifrei Torah and other seforim were burned, homes and stores broken into and looted, and all men between the ages of sixteen and sixty arrested, many assaulted, and some murdered outright.

On Parashas Vayeiro (18 Marcheshvan) Rav Mantel, in his sermon, noted that, before destroying Sedom, I will reveal Myself. Although unseen by us, Tzoros ,אתגלי כען which Targum renders as ,ארדה נא states הקב''הinclude a התגלות, a revelation and preparation for something greater, from הקב''ה.

In our Kehilla, the special selicho of HaShem Elokai Rabbas (recited three times on Yom Kippur) is added on Taanis Sheini Kammo in commemoration of the infamous Kristallnacht and the ensuing Churban Europe. Memory of these events is also evident in the recitation of the Yehi Rotzon’s after each time we say Tachanun. This was a Takono of the Rabbonim while still in Germany, and our Kehilla is one of the few places in which this Takono is still observed, until, as our Minhag-book says, all Tzoros cease, B’mheiro v’yomeinu.

SPECIAL HOLIDAY SHIURIM

The legal holiday of Thursday, November 28th (Rosh Chodesh Kisleiv), featured the first of this season’s special Holiday Shiurim. Given by Rav Yehoshua Rubanowitz, the well-attended Shiur took place in Moller Hall with light refreshments.

The next shiur, on December 25th, will be given by Rav Mantel, while January 1st 2020 is, of course, is the date of Agudath Israel’s Daf Yomi Siyum Hashas in Met-Life stadium.

OUT OF THE PAST…

As Daf Yomi learners, and others, in the Kehilla and everywhere, look forward to the upcoming 14th Siyum HaShas, memories—in this case preserved on film by Agudath Israel, and located by Mr. Ben Ettlinger—of past Siyumim, remain. Pictured directly below, Rav Schwab at a previous Siyum HaShas, with Rav Avrohom Pam and Rav Elya Svei, far left and left; far below, Rav Eliyohu Glucksman (fifth from the left) at the 1997/5757 Siyum.

SHIVTI RETURNS FOR FALL-WINTER ZMAN

The Shivti Chabura continues to meet Sunday mornings from 9:00-11:00 AM in the Dombrow Beis Medrash, having begun another successful “Winter Z’man” of Shiurim and learning. They are currently learning sugyos related to the Mitzvo of being mechaneich one’s child/ren.

Participants first learn the Sugya beChavrusa, using the specially-prepared booklets from Beis Medrash Govoha, and then hear a shiur on the material by Rabbi Yisroel Stein. The Washington Heights Chaburo was also recently featured in Shivti’s Weekly Updates, quoted below:

“Winter Zman on the Hudson

This new zman has begun with an intriguing series and a great start in communities across the globe. Allow us to share with you a glimpse of a most vibrant chaburah located in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. The legendary K'hal Adath Jeshurun has been part of Shivti for a number of years and continues to generate interest across the spectrum of the neighborhood. Pictured is Rabbi Yisroel Stein, Rosh Chabura, delivering a shiur following a seder limud.”

AVOS U’VANIM

Avos u’Vanim, the international father-son learning program held every Motzoei Shabbos in the fall and winter, got off to an excellent start this season in the Kehilla, as a record-setting number of fathers and

sons—and grandfathers—gathered in the Agudah Shul on Motzoei Shabbos Parashas Vayeiro, November 16th/ 19 Marcheshvon. Many thanks to Mr. Yoseph Levi for organizing this program again this year.

CHALLAH BAKE

Held on Wednesday evening, November 13/ 16 Marcheshvan, the Washington Heights Challa Bake brought over fifty women and girls together in Moller Hall. All those who attended got a chance to take part in making Challah dough of the shiur to be mafrish challah with a brocha (five pounds). Those who attended were also treated to some more “ready-made” nourishment, in the form of fruit, spreads and cookies. As the ladies waited for their dough to rise, they were addressed by Rebbetzin Eichenstein of Manhattan High School, who shared some thoughts and stories with her audience. An additional bonus was Mrs. Shuli Gutmann’s demo and instructions on how to make a six-braid Challah!

Many thanks to Mesdames Cindy Klugmann (who also served as the evening’s enthusiastic emcee), Gitty Levi, Sari Levi and Pamela Weiman, and to all the women and girls who helped organize and carry out this enjoyable event.

YAHRZEIT OF ROCHEL IMEINU - ANNUAL VIDEO PRESENTATION

On Tuesday evening, November 12th/15 Marcheshvon, both Sisterhood members and many other local women gathered in Moller Hall to view the worldwide audio-visual presentation commemorating Rochel Imeinu’s Yahrzeit. The topic was “Where Am I Headed? Connecting to Our Spiritual GPS.” At that time, it was also announced that Mrs. Bertha Jacobovits has retired from the presidium of the Sisterhood, after many years of extraordinary involvement and leadership; the current presidium now consists of Mesdames Breinie Gutman and Ray Adler.

REMINDER FROM THE CEMETARY COMMITTEE

When visiting the Beis Olam, members are asked to please use caution and not lean or push on any of the Matzeivos. Freezing and thawing of the ground may cause shifting of the Matzeivos’ foundations, and may cause the Matzeivo to move.

NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER

As we geared up for winter, Moriah facilitated the administration of approximately 100 flu vaccines to seniors, Yeshiva staff and community residents. State Senator Robert Jackson even stopped by to show his support and get his shot in the comfort and safety of our Center.

Moriah seniors took part this month in a valuable informational Medicare Update seminar. Gil Kunken, the former Deputy Administrator for the New York Regional Office of the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, educated our group on all the ins, outs and changes to the Medicare system this year. Following the program, he consulted privately with anyone who wished to get more personalized counsel.

The Museum of Illusions, a little known spot tucked in a corner of lower Manhattan, was the destination for a November outing that dazzled our brains and our eyes. The brain is a most magnificent organ and we were astounded at the ways that our eyes and brains work together. There were many fun, hands-on illusions to explore. The Jastrow Illusion (well worth investigating!) was perhaps one of the simplest, yet

most confounding. We could have spent all morning in the museum that taught us not to be so quick to believe what our eyes perceive…

Moriah is actively seeking volunteers to assist with check-in and lunch service. Volunteer for an hour, volunteer once a week, or volunteer more often. The choice is yours. If you are interested it being part of our warm and welcoming environment, please call us at 212-923-5715.

If you are 60+, working or retired, this might be the time to come in and register. See what Moriah can offer you. If you would like to receive our monthly newsletter via email, please contact us at [email protected].

SHAATNEZ Shaatnez (wool and linen) is often found in garments bought even from a reliable Jewish clothing store. Therefore, it is forbidden to wear any man’s, woman’s or child’s garment that contains wool or linen until it has been determined not to contain shaatnez. To determine whether your garment is shaatnez-free, garments may be dropped off at the Kehilla office, 714 W. 186th Street at the following times:

Weekdays 10:00 – 4:30 Fridays 10:00 – 12:00

Please fill out a pre-check form online at https://www.kajinc.org/services/shaatnez-lab/pre-check. If you have questions, please email [email protected].

Mr. Dovid Brownstein will test the garments on our premises.

Please note that it is important to leave on tags with information where garment is manufactured and list of materials contained in it.
