When I was 5or 6 years old andliving with myGram andGrandpa, I beganto notice that wekept our foodstored in a funnylooking box on the porch. Everysecond or third day an ice wagonwould pull upto our house, the driverwould place25 pounds ofice on hisshoulder andwould climbour stairs tothe back porch. He would place theice in this box that kept all of ourfood that needed to be kept cool.

My job was to empty the little panunder this box which kept the melt-ing ice. If I forgot water would runall over the floor and I would be indeep trouble.

Then one day my Grandpabrought an electric refrigerator toreplace the ice box which we called, because of our Italian heritage, Ice-a-box. The new machine was a won-der and not only kept food cold andfrozen foods frozen but best of all Ididn’t have to daily empty the waterpan.

Over the years these machines, now called refrigerators, wereimproved and became more reliable, which brings us to our story of lastweek. Our refrigerator, which we

Things I have noticed...

The ice-a-box bought 15 years ago, finally gave upthe ghost and no longer kept thingscold and frozen. We figured it wastime for a new one and at the sametime we would replace our largerside-by-side refrigerator, which wasalso 15 years old. For those of youwondering, we had a small fridgeoutside and a larger one in thekitchen.

The big chore at this time wastransferring food from the oldmachine to the new. This was hard-

er than it soundsbecause at thesame time wemade the trans-fers we alsocleaned out foodthat had a datestamp on it.

Let me giveyou an example. We removed a 3-pound frozen chicken which had anexpiration date of Oct. 2003 on it.Now I will have to say that the chick-en still looked pretty good, but therewas no way we were going to eat an11-year-old chicken! Behind thechicken in the old box was a packageof frozen broccoli that was more thanfour years old. Also in the very backwas a sack full of gizzards that wasthree years old and definitely hadfreezer burns. And so on.

We finally made the transfers andhad items in the new boxes that werereasonably current. The moral to thisstory is: If it’s cold, it might be old, socheck the dates!

Message of faith

Dan Schlensker,Courier Columnist

The city ofLubbock, TX,recently unveiled abronze statue of anAfrican-Americanarmy veteran and astudent at TexasTech Universitynamed TimothyCole in a little city park across thestreet from the Texas Tech LawSchool and about four blocks fromthe scene of a crime, for which hewas condemned and incarcerated.Cole was accused in 1986 of raping awhite university student at knifepoint. The victim had testified that herassailant was a smoker, and althoughCole was asthmatic and had neversmoked, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 25 years inprison.

That was 28 years ago. In the earlyyears of his jail time, Cole had beengiven several opportunities to beparoled, if he’d simply confess to thecrime for which he was serving time. However, he steadfastly maintainedhis innocence in spite of potential forhis being paroled. And rightly so!

For after the statute of limitationson aggravated rape (Cole’s allegedcrime) had expired, another inmate, who was doing life for a series ofother rapes, confessed to Cole’scrime and admitted that he, not Cole, was the assailant. DNA evidence con-firmed his confession. The Texascourt system had condemned thewrong man!

Innocent But CondemnedSo, the Texas court system could

just, apologize, release Cole andcompensate him, right? No. For inthe 14th year of his jail term, TimCole died of an asthma attack at theage of 38. In 2010, Governor RickPerry, granted Texas’s first everposthumous pardon, and the Texasstate legislature is taking steps tochange laws in such a way as toreduce the chances of executing sim-ilar injustices in the future. JohnBurnett of NPR News, commentedthat Cole’s “statue is a reminder thatthe law is fallible, but the truth mustwin the day.”

We see another reminder of aninjustice of far greater magnitudefrequently. That reminder is a cross, like the one on a hilltop outsideJerusalem about 2000 years ago, where another man was totally inno-cent of any crimes, yet - rather thanbeing thrown into jail for 25 years -was executed in a most horrifyingmanner: crucifixion. Jesus was thatman, the Son of God and Savior ofthe world. And it was His completelyunjust execution, since He had doneno wrong, that can be applied to ouroffense accounts, simply throughfaith in Him. That is, trusting that Hisgracious, loving action of sufferingand dying in our place actually madethe immense and total payment pricefor all the sins and offenses of whichwe are guilty. God’s law is not falli-ble, but the truth of God’s love, graceand mercy has definitely won theday!

Don’t forget “End of Season Closing Party Saturday November 29th”

Mike MencariniCourier Columnist

As we movefrom the dog daysof summer into thecooler days of fall,it’s time to changeour fishing patterns.Yes, it’s time forsome fall crappiefishing. In the fallthe lake’s water temperature is aboutthe same at all depths and the oxygenlevel is a bit higher. What this means isthe crappie can be schooled up at anydepth at any time. So finding the hun-gry schools will be the hardest part ofthe trip.

In the fall, the schools of shad arevery important to the crappie as wellas the bass. Both species depend onthe baitfish as they need to fatten upfor the winter months. So No. 1 onyour bait list should be minnows. It’s atossup for numbers two and three. Ithink jigs and then small minnow typeartificial lures, two inches long or less.It depends on which one you feel more

confident with. Just as in the summer, the crappie

feed more aggressively from lateevening to the early morning hours. So don’t count out night fishing.Artificial light works well as it drawsinsects which draws the baitfish(shad) which attracts the crappie.Another rule-of-thumb to follow iswhen the water has low visibility, usesmall artificial lures that make noiseand when the water is clear or clearer, use jigs or small spoons. If you have atwo rod stamp, you might try a liveminnow on one rod and artificial lureon the other.

There is a short window of timethat you can catch crappie from theshore as they come shallow in theevening and early morning hours tofeed. That time window is now. Iexpect to see some of you burning themidnight oil until the weather turnscold and the crappie head to deepwater.

Mike Mencarini is a Wofford Heightsresident and avid fisherman. For ques-tions or comments you can reach himthrough the Kern River Courier.
