dramatically reduces degradation
caused by chlorine, signicantly
extending service life. HpHT UF
elements allow cleaning at high
temperatures and high pH, often
eliminating the need for chlorine.
KMS high-rejection RO elements
typically exhibit greater than 99.9%
COD rejection, while our SR3D NF
membranes excel in demineralizing
and concentrating proteins and lactose.
Chemical Recovery
Membranes can be used to recover
expensive acid and caustic from CIP
streams, helping you reduce operat-
ing costs and comply with regulatory
requirements. Membranes clarify the
cleaning solution to remove suspend-
ed and dissolved solids so the treated
solutions can be reused.
KMS offers the SelRO line of
chemically stable NF membranes
for caustic and acid streams. SelRO
membranes have excellent long-term
stability in efuent solutions such
as sodium hydroxide, potassiumhydroxide, phosphoric acid, and nitric
acid at concentrations of 10% or more.
They can handle the job with ease,
and save you time and money in the
long run.
Water Recovery
Consistent high-quality water
production is essential in all dairy
processing operations. Without
adequate treatment, reusing process
water streams can reintroduce
contaminants and pathogens into
your products. We understand the
challenges well, and have long been
supplying solutions to overcome them.
KMS membranes are widely used in
dairies to produce clean, safe CIP
water while reducing water usage and
operating costs. Our designsadhere
to strict purication standards, and are
known industry-wide for their durabilitywhich results in a higher ROI.
Brine Recovery
Salting by brine immersion is used
in many varieties of cheese. Brine
disposal has become an increasingly
costly and environmentally challenging
issue for cheese manufacturers.
KMS membrane ltration technologiesreliably remove protein, fat, yeast, and
mold. Time-tested and widely used,
these systems will allow you to clarify
and recover brine, while maintaining
the avor and quality of your cheeses.
The Market
Membranes for Whey Processing
Whey Concentration
After cheese making the resultant whey can be concentrated using
membranes, providing a protein enriched stream ahead of the evapo-
ration and drying process. Ultraltration is the standard process for
the production of 35 to 90% of whey protein concentrate. RO can
be used downstream to concentrate the UF permeate to produce
lactose or permeate powder. When producing cheeses that generate
signicant volumes of salt whey, a nanoltration step can be added
to partially desalt the stream, thus increasing the volume of recov-
erable whey solids. Partially desalted whey can then supplement
the primary whey stream and be sent to the UF system for protein
concentration prior to evaporation and drying.

Weve put our experience to work to create a wide selection
of spiral ultrafiltration elements that are ideal for dairy
processing, including the first ultrafiltration system ever built
for the production of whey protein concentrate.
Ultrafltration
KMS offers a wide selection of
sanitary spiral ultraltration elements
with 5,000 and 10,000 molecular
weight cut-off that are ideal for milk
and whey concentration, production
of whey isolates, and milk standard-
ization. These products are made of
polyethersulfone (PES) membrane
polymer and are designed to
conform to USDA 3A standards and
FDA regulations.
The dairy industry benchmark for
protein recovery are the standard
HFK-131 and HFK-328 UF element
lines, which offer long life and stable
productivity. They operate effectively
over a wide pH range and can be
continuously run at 131 F (55 C).

HpHT-HFK Ultraltration
In 2001 KMS introduced High pH
and High Temperature (HpHT)
UF elements into the HFK family.
These elements can be cleaned at
temperatures as high as 185 F (85
C) and at a pH of 12.5. This enables
dairies to eliminate the use of chlorine
in many processes, thereby avoiding
the difculties
associated with handling it and rinsing
it from the elements. The elements
are manufactured with proprietary
materials selected and developed
specically for use under extreme
conditions while providing higher
productivity than competing products.
Ultrafltration
Te KMS system and the XL-1000
membranes are so durable, dependable and
easy to maintain that our operators can
focus on the two other key processes, the
evaporators and pasteurizers.
