Seoul Chamber Society

Seoul Chamber Society, established in 2009, is based in Seoul, Korea. The Chamber comprises about 30 members who pursue parallel careers as international soloists, members of prominent chamber groups, and music professors/tutors. With instruments of the string, wind, brass, and percussion groups, the ensemble’s repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, in addition to chamber music and symphonic works. For this tour, Dvořák’s Piano Quartet, Saint-Saëns’ Septet for piano, trumpet, string quartet and bass, and a variety of delightful music pieces will be performed by 15 performers.

서울챔버소사이어티

2009년 설립된 서울챔버소사이어티는 서울을 기반으로 활동하고

있다. 국제무대에서 활동하는 솔리스트, 연주단의 일원, 그리고 후학

양성을 위해 힘쓰는 30여명의 회원으로 구성되었다. 현악과 관악,

금관악, 타악 등 모든 악기가 포함된 서울챔버소사이어티는 실내악

에서 교향곡까지, 바로크에서 현대음악까지를 모두 섭렵하는 폭넓은

레퍼토리를 선보인다. 이번 공연에서는 15명의 연주자들이 드보르작의

피아노 4중주와 생상스의 피아노, 트럼펫, 현악 4중주와 더블베이스를

위한 칠중주를 비롯한 아름다운 음악을 선사한다.

국내외에서 인정받은 중견 솔리스트 서울챔버소사이어티가 인도네시아, 필리핀, 싱가포르에서 4중주, 7중주의 실내악, 협주곡 등 다채로운 프로그램으로 아세아인의 마음을 사로잡는다.

W. A. Mozart Oboe Quartet in F Major, K.370The Oboe Quartet in F Major, K. 370, was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in early 1781. The quartet is scored for the oboe, violin, viola and cello. In 1780, Mozart was invited to Munich to visit Elector Karl Theodor, who had commissioned the opera Idomeneo for a carnival celebration. While in Munich, Mozart renewed an acquaintance with Friedrich Ramm, a virtuoso oboist in the Munich orchestra. It was for Ramm that Mozart composed this quartet.

P. Sarasate Zigeunerweisen, Op.20Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20, is a musical composition for violin and orchestra written in 1878 by the Spanish composer and virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, and premiered the same year in Leipzig. It is based on themes of the Roma people, specifically the rhythms of the csárdás. Sarasate’s most popular composition and a favorite among violin virtuosi, the work has remained a staple for recordings, at least since Sarasate himself recorded it in 1904.

A. Dvořák Piano Quartet in E♭Major, Op.87Dvořák’s Piano Quartet in E flat Major, Op. 87, while not devoid of folk influences, falls on the pan-European side of the duality that pervaded and animated Dvořák’s work. Its outer movements are expansive, quite Brahmsian essays in sonata form, with characteristic touches of such instrumental writing as the rapid exchange of tremolos between violin and viola at the end of the first movement. The second movement, marked Lento, is one of Dvořák’s most purely lyrical, with a sequence of five themes, shifting in mood. The third movement, the most folkloristic of the four, consists of two contrasting dances.

C. Saint-Saëns Septet for Trumpet, String Quintet and Piano, Op.65

The unusual scoring (trumpet, piano, string quartet, double bass) of this septet may have limited its performances and recordings, but it’s truly one of the most delightful chamber works of the 19th century. Saint-Saëns wrote it in 1881, for a Parisian music society “La Trompette,” and, given such a name, the composer could hardly have resisted working a trumpet into the piece. Inevitably, it becomes the dominant voice almost whenever it plays, but Saint-Saëns makes a valiant effort to keep the ensemble as balanced as possible. The septet takes the form of a Baroque suite.

A. Marcello Oboe Concerto in D minorThe Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor by Alessandro Marcello is one of the most performed oboe concertos in the repertory. It was written in the early 18th century and has become Marcello’s most famous work. In the past, and continuing to the present, it has been mistakenly attributed to Alessandro Marcello’s brother Benedetto Marcello and to Antonio Vivaldi. Johann Sebastian Bach made the piece famous by writing a transcription of the piece in C minor for harpsichord (BWV 974). The concerto has also been recorded played on a piccolo trumpet.

W. A. Mozart Oboe Quartet in F major, K.370오보에 4중주 바장조 K.370은 볼프강 아마데우스 모차르트가 1781년

초 오보에와 바이올린, 비올라, 첼로를 위한 4중주곡으로 만든

작품이다. 1780년 모차르트는 사육제를 위해 오페라 ‘이도메네오’를

의뢰한 선제후 칼 테오드르를 방문하기 위해 뮌헨에 초대되었다.

뮌헨에 머무는 동안, 모차르트는 뮌헨 오케스트라의 뛰어난 오보에

주자였던 프레드리히 람을 만나게 되었다. 이 곡은 모차르트가 람을

위해 작곡한 4중주곡이다.

P. Sarasate Zigeunerweisen, Op.20지고이네르바이젠 Op.20은 스페인의 작곡가이자 뛰어난 연주자인

파블로 데 사라사테가 1878년 바이올린과 오케스트라를 위해 만든

곡으로, 같은 해 라이프치히에서 초연됐다. 이 곡은 집시들의 무곡을

기반으로 했는데, 특히나 헝가리의 민속 무용인 차르다슈의 리듬을

주제로 하고 있다. 사라사테는 가장 대중적인 작곡가이자, 바이올린의

거장들이 총애하는 작곡가이기도 하다. 그의 곡들은 1904년 사라

사테 자신이 녹음한 이래, 수많은 바이올리니스트들에 의해 녹음

되고 있다.

A. Dvořák Piano Quartet in E♭Major, Op.87드보르작의 피아노 4중주 내림마장조 Op.87는 민족적인 영향이

없는 것은 아니지만, 이와 동시에 가진 범유럽적인 감성으로 드보

르작의 작품을 널리 알리는데 기여한 작품이기도 하다. 바깥 악장은

활달한데, 1악장의 끝부분에 나오는 바이올린과 비올라가 주고

받는 신속한 트레몰로 등은 브람스의 소나타형식을 따르고 있다.

‘렌토’로 표시된 2악장은 분위기를 변환시키는 다섯 가지 테마가

연속되는 드보르작의 가장 순수한 서정시 같은 작품 중 하나다.

두 개의 대조적인 춤곡으로 구성된 3악장은 네 악장 중 가장 민속

적이다.

C. Saint-Saëns Septet for Trumpet, String Quintet and Piano, Op.65

트럼펫과 피아노, 현악 4중주와 더블베이스라는 흔치 않은 구성으로

인해 이 곡은 연주와 녹음에 한계를 가지지만, 19세기의 가장 눈부신

실내악 작업임이 분명하다. 생상스는 이 곡을 1881년 “라 트럼펫”

라 불리는 파리의 음악 단체를 위해 작곡했기 때문에 이 작품에

트럼펫을 구성하는 데 문제가 없었다. 이 곡은 트럼펫이 가장 두드러

지는 소리를 내는 것이 필연적인지만, 생상스는 최대한 균형을 맞춰

조화를 이루기 위해 노력을 기울였다. 이 7중주는 바로크 모음곡의

형식을 취하고 있다.

A. Marcello Oboe Concerto in D minor알레산드로 마르첼로의 오보에와 현을 위한 협주곡 라단조는 가장

많이 연주된 오보에 협주곡 중 하나이다. 이 곡은 18세기 초에

쓰여졌으며, 마르첼로의 가장 유명한 곡이 되었다. 오랫동안 알레

산드로의 형제인 베네데토 마르첼로와 비발디의 작업으로 잘못

알려졌다. 요한 세바스티안 바흐가 이 곡을 하프시코드를 위해

다단조로 편곡(BWV 974)하며 유명해졌으며 피콜로 트럼펫 연주로

녹음되기도 했다.

B. Bartók Roumanian Folk DancesRomanian Folk Dances is a suite of six short piano pieces composed by Béla Bartók in 1915. He later orchestrated it for the small ensemble in 1917. It is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd’s flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary but was later changed by Bartók when Transylvania joined Romania in 1918. It is nowadays available in the 1971 edition which is written with key signatures although Bartok rarely ever wrote key signatures.

Hyungsuk KIM I believe (Movie ‘My Sassy Girl’ O.S.T.)This piece is a the instrumental background music used in the Asia’s beloved movie “My Sassy Girl”, where Korean female film star Jihyun JUN (also known as Gianna Jun) appears. This movie is a South Korean romantic comedy movie based on a true story written by Hyungsuk KIM which later became a well-liked internet novel. The song, “I Believe” is the theme song of this popular movie.

E. Grieg Last Spring, Op.34 - No.2 Grieg generally shunned larger-scale forms, believing that his strengths lay in the more intimate forms associated with his native Norwegian folk culture. The Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34 is an arrangement for string orchestra from his Op. 33. Shorn of their vocal element, both nevertheless reveal their provenance through the richly-inflected speech-rhythms of their melodic lines, simple and direct in their appeal to the listener’s emotions. Heart’s Wounds is the more overtly passionate, developing a strong compulsion in its central episode, while Last Spring is generally more circumspect, tender, and achingly mournful.

P. Tchaikovsky Waltz (from Serenade for Strings)In 1880, he composed simultaneously two of his most popular works: the 1812 Overture and the Serenade for Strings. While he despised the Overture, written on commission, he poured all his love and craft into the Serenade. In the key of C Major and four movements, it opens with a stately slow introduction emphasizing the lushness of string sonority in rich chords. This leads to two themes: the first smooth and yearning, the second suggesting fleet footwork with staccato violins and violas over a plucked accompaniment. Both sections are repeated before the opening music returns to provide a grand, symmetrical close.

G. Torelli Trumpet Concerto in D MajorGiuseppe Torelli (1658-1709) was an Italian composer and violinist. While he began his career composing chamber music, he turned to concertos and in fact advanced the concerto as a genre. This concerto, written around 1701 as one of the first of several trumpet-oboe pieces, remained unpublished until after his death.

A. Piazzolla Oblivion Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion was composed in 1982 as a chamber ensemble. This piece was one of Astor Piazzolla’s most famous Tangos, and it became popular when it was released on the soundtrack of Marco Bellochio’s film, Henry IV, the Mad King. It starts out with violins and cellos, and is a beautiful, haunting piece that speaks of tragedy and love.

Piazzolla Invierno portenoAstor Piazzolla’s Invierno Porteno was inspired by Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, “Invierno Porteno” (Winter in Buenos Aires) is the second of Astor Piazzolla’s “Cuatro Estaciones Portenas” (The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires) which was written over a period of six years in the 1960s, and which has caught the attention of world-wide audiences. In fact classical music orchestras are beginning to program The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, alongside those of Vivaldi’s. In the year 2000, renowned violinist Gidon Kremer, released a highly acclaimed album “Vivaldi and Piazzolla, Eight Seasons.”

B. Bartók Roumanian Folk Dances루마니아 민속 무곡은 원래 벨라 바르토크가 1915년 작곡한 6개

짧은 피아노 악장으로 구성된 곡이었는데, 1917년 소규모 오케스

트라를 위한 곡으로 편곡됐다. 이 곡은 원래 피들이나 양치기의

플루트로 연주되던 루마니아 중부 트란실바니아의 일곱 개의 곡조를

기반으로 하고 있다. 이 곡의 원제는 ‘헝가리의 루마니아 민속 무곡’

이었는데 1918년 트란실바니아가 루마니아에 편입되자 작곡가가

곡명을 수정했다. 바르토크는 조표를 거의 사용하지 않았지만 요즘

에는 조표로 기입한 1971년 판으로 연주가 가능하다.

김현석 I believe (영화 ‘엽기적인 그녀’ O.S.T.)

한국영화배우 전지현이 출연한 영화 ‘엽기적인 그녀’ 의 주제가로

사용되어 아시아에서 사랑받은 곡 ‘I believe'를 연주한다. ‘엽기적인

그녀’는 인터넷 소설가 김호식의 실화를 바탕으로 한국 로멘틱

코미디 영화이다.

E. Grieg Last Spring, Op.34 - No.2그리그는 스스로의 강점은 모국인 노르웨이의 민속 문화와 결합된

친밀한 형식에 있다고 믿었기 때문에 일반적으로는 대규모의 편성을

기피했다. 두 개의 슬픈 선율 Op. 34는 그의 Op.33을 현악 오케스

트라로 편곡한 것이다. 멜로디 라인의 음성 리듬을 풍성하게 변화

시킴으로써 유래를 드러냈음에도 불구하고 보다 단순하고 직접적

으로 청중들의 감정을 사로잡았다. ‘마음의 상처’는 중심 악장에서

강한 충동을 발전시키며 좀 더 과도하게 열정적인 반면, ‘지난 봄’은

일반적으로 좀 더 신중하고 부드러우며 갈망하는 애도를 보여준다.

P. Tchaikovsky Waltz (from Serenade for Strings) 1880년 가을, 차이코프스키는 그의 가장 유명한 곡인 ‘1812년 서곡’과

‘현을 위한 세레나데’를 동시에 작곡했다. 의뢰를 받아 작곡한 서곡을

경멸한 반면, 세레나데에는 그의 모든 사랑과 재능을 쏟아 부었다.

다장조에 네 개의 악장으로 구성된 이 곡은 풍부한 화음으로 현의

공명을 강조하는 장중하고 느린 서곡으로 시작한다. 이것은 두 개의

테마를 이끄는데, 첫 번째는 유려하고 갈망하며 두 번째는 바이올린과

비올라를 뜯는 주법의 스타카토로 빠른 주법을 선보인다. 두 개의

테마가 반복되다가 처음 제시됐던 주제로 돌아가 웅장하고 대칭적

으로 끝난다.

G. Torelli Trumpet Concerto in D Major주세페 토렐리(1658-1709)는 이탈리아의 작곡가이자 바이올리니

스트다. 처음에는 실내악 음악을 작곡하다 협주곡으로 돌아선 후,

사실상 협주곡을 하나의 장르로 발전시켰다. 1701년 즈음에 쓰인

이 협주곡은 그가 죽을 때까지 출판되지 않았던 여러 곡의 트럼펫과

오보에 초기 작품 중 하나다.

A. Piazzolla Oblivion아스토르 피아졸라의 망각은 실내악 앙상블로 1982년 작곡됐다.

이 곡은 피아졸라의 가장 잘 알려진 탱고 중 하나인데, 마르코 벨로

치오의 영화인 “헨리 4세, 미친 왕”의 사운드트랙으로 사용되며

크게 유명해졌다. 바이올린과 첼로의 아름다운 선율로 시작되는 이

곡은 비극과 사랑에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다.

A. Piazzolla Invierno porteno아스토르 피아졸라의 ‘항구의 겨울’은 안토니오 비발디의 사계에서

영감을 받아 작곡된 “부에노스 아이레스의 사계” 중 두 번째 곡으로

1960년대 6 년에 걸쳐 쓰여 전 세계적인 주목을 받았다. 사실 클래식

오케스트라는 부에노스 아이레스의 사계를 비발디의 사계와 함께

하기 시작하였다. 2000년, 유명 바이올리니스트 기돈 크레머는

앨범 “비발디와 피아졸라, 여덟 개의 계절”을 발매하여 높은 평가를

받았다.
