Main features

The Beat Boy allows you to record and tune aguitar or a bass thats connected to the INPUTjack. The Beat Boy comes equipped with a highgain distortion eect that can be applied to aconnected guitar. The Beat Boy also allowsyou to record and tune using the internal mic.

Additionally, you can use the tuner, drummachine and recorder either separately orsimultaneously.

You can use the stand provided on the backof the Beat Boy to tilt it back at an angle foreasy viewing.

Included rubber feet

If needed, you can aach the included rubberfeet to boom of the Beat Boy.

Installing batteries

Removing the baeries during a recordingwill cause the recording to error. Do not

remove the baeries while the Beat Boy isbeing used. Always replace the baeriesaer a recording is stopped.

1. Slide the baery compartment cover onthe back of the Beat Boy in direction aas shown in the illustration and li up

the cover in direction b.2. Insert the batteries, making sure to

observe the correct polarity.

3. When you replace the baeries and turnon the power, the display will show ascreen allowing you to specify the typeof baeries that youre using.

4. Press the TAP TEMPO buon to selectthe baery type.AL:When using alkaline baeries.nH: When using nickel-metal hydridebaeries.

5. Press the buon.The seing will be completed, and theBeat Boy will start up.

Depleted baeries should be immediately

removed from the unit. In addition, removethe baeries if you do not expect to use theunit for an extended period of time.

Do not mix partially used baeries with

new ones, and do not mix baeries ofdiering types.

When the baeries run down, a baery symbolwill appear on the le side of the display.

When the baeries run down even further,the baery symbol will blink. At this time, itwill no longer be possible to use the recorder

function to record. Although you will still beable to play back recorded data and use thetuner and drum machine functions, you shouldreplace the baeries as soon as possible.

Quick start

The Beat Boy allows you to record a guitar ora bass thats connected to the INPUT jack orsound from the internal mic.You can simply record your performance.In addition, you can immediately play backyour recorded performance in order to check it.In this section, we will explain the basicprocedures, from turning on the recorder andrecording to playing back and deleting recorded

data. Follow these procedures while referringto the Parts of the Beat Boy section on page 6.

Lets listen to the demo songSix demo songs have already been recorded inthe Beat Boy. Lets listen to the demo songs rst.

1. Press the RECORDER ON and DRUMON buon to turn on the recorder andthe drum machine.

2. Press the PLAY/STOP buon to play backthe demo songs.While listening to the demo songs, theplayback will be stopped once the PLAY/

STOP buon is pressed.While play back is stopped, when thebuon is pressed, the demo song will goto the following song and when thebuon is pressed the demo song will goto the previous song.While listening to the demo songs, the

playback will be started from the beginningof the following demo song once thebuon is pressed.

The demo songs utilize the internal memoryspace of the Beat Boy. For more recording time,seethe Deleting a track section on page 28to

delete the demo songs. In addition, for transferthe demo songs, see the Transferring datasection on page 36 to save the demo song ontothe computer.

Recording a performance

1. Prepare your musical instrument.Connect a guitar or a bass to the INPUTjack. Press the DIST/MIC buon to select

the desired distortion type. With acousticstring instruments or wind instruments,use the internal mic.

2. Press the RECORDER ON buon to turnon the recorder.After the recorder is turned on,

, track number andrecording time will appear on the display.If it is the rst time a recording is beingmade or if there are no recorded tracks, will appear on the track indicatorof the display.

the amount of time available for recording.The center indicator of the tuning guide willblink in red. In addition, the track numberand REC icon will blink on the display,and the track number will change to 00.

Use the volume control to adjust theplayback sound.Aer playing to the end of the recording,playback will automatically stop.

Deleting the recorded performanceFinally, lets delete the data for the recordedperformance.

1. With the recorder stopped, press the A-B/DELETE buon.The delete screen will appear on thedisplay, and the track number will blink.

2. Press the buon to delete the track.Once the track has been deleted, willappear on the track indicator of the display.

This completes the basic procedures forrecording, playing back and deleting withthe Beat Boy.The recorder of the Beat Boy can be usedsimultaneously with the tuner and drummachine.For more details on recorder operation,please refer to the Using the recordersection on page 24.

Turning the power on/off

The TUNER ON button, the DRUM ONbuon, and the RECORDER ON buon arethe Beat Boys power buon.

The power button is designed lowerthan other buons so that the power isnot turned on involuntarily when theBeat Boy is placed in your pocket or in abag. Press and hold the power buon fora while to turn ON or OFF.

To turn the power onPress either the TUNER ON buon, the DRUMON buon, or the RECORDER buon and thepower will turn on.

When the TUNER ON buon is pressed, the

tuner starts and will appearon the display.

When the DRUM ON buon is pressed, thedrum machine starts and

will appear on the display.

When the RECORDER ON buon is pressed,the recorder starts and willappear on the display.

The Beat Boy can run the tuner, drummachine, and recorder simultaneously.

To turn the power offThe power for the Beat Boy will turn o whenthe tuner, drum machine and recorder are

Backlight

When necessary, press the Backlight buon to set the backlight.Each time the Backlight buon is pressed, youcan switch to SoAutoOSoSo:Low-intensity lighting to prevent baeryconsumption.

Auto:The backlight will light brightly whensound is input and when buons are used.

If a sound is not input or a buon is not pressedfor 10 seconds, the backlight will automaticallylight up to the so seing brightness.

O:The backlight does not light up.

Turning o the recorderWhen the recorder is in use, press theRECORDER ON button to turn off therecorder.

Auto Power-O functionThe tuner, drum machine and recorder willalso turn o automatically if no sound hasbeen input of if there has been no user inputfor 20 minutes.

Connections

Input - INPUT jackConnect a cable to your guitar or electric

bass and plug the other end of the cable intothe Beat Boys INPUT jack. When tuning orrecording using the internal mic, press theDIST/MIC buon to select the internal MIC.

The INPUT jack is only for a 1/4" monocable. Stereo (TRS) cables cannot be used.

Even if a device is connected to the INPUTjack, the audio input will be captured bythe internal mic when the MIC is selected.

Output - PHONES jackYou can connect headphones with a 1/8"mini-plug to the PHONES jack.When plugged in, no sound will be heard

from the speaker. Use the volume control toadjust the volume of the headphone output.

Switching distortion type or internal micEach time the DIST/MIC buon is pressed,you can switch the input (distortion type orinternal mic).

Using the tuner

1. Press the TUNER ON buon. will appear at the top of

the display.2. Connect a guitar or a bass to the INPUT

jack. When using the internal mic, pressthe DIST/MIC buon to select the MIC.

3. Play a single note on your instrument.The closest note to the input sound willappear in the center of the display. Tuneyour instrument to the correct pitch, so thatthe desired note name appears.

If youre using the internal mic, place yourinstrument as close as possible to the micso that extraneous sound is not picked up

while tuning. In addition, tuning is easierwhen the drum machine is not playing .

4. While playing a single note on yourinstrument, tune your instrument sothat the tip of the meter indicates 440 ofthe center and the center indicator of the

tuning guide is lit up in green. (When thereference tone A = 440Hz)The le tuning guide indicator will light upin red if the pitch of your instrument is at,and the right indicator in red if the pitch issharp. The value (436 to 444) at the top ofthe meter indicates the reference pitch. For

example, when tuning each string with A= 436Hz, adjust each string so that the tipof the meter indicates 436.

Note:The tuning guide is dedicated forA = 440Hz. Ignore the tuning guide whentuning with the reference pitch other than

A = 440Hz.

Using the drum machine

Setting the drum pattern and tempo

1. Press the DRUM ON buon.

The , drum set, paernnumber, tempo, and drum level will appearon the display.

2. Press the DRUM PATTERNp,qbuonto select the drum paern.Each time the GENRE buon is pressed,you will move to the paern number of

the following genres top.) the Rhythm paern list section onpage 21.

3. Press the START/STOP buon to start

the drum machine.The display of the drum set variesaccording to the tempo. The TAP TEMPObuon will blink in time with this motion.

4. Press the TEMPO p, q buon to setthe tempo.Pressing the TEMPO p, qbuons willincrement or decrement the tempo throughthe range of 30252 in steps of one. Thevalue will change continuously if you holddown the buon.

5. When adjusting the volume of the drummachine to the input sound from theINPUT jack or the internal mic, adjust itwith the D.LEVELp,qbuon.Note:The D.LEVEL (drum level) sets therelative drum volume to the INPUT jack,the internal mic and the playback soundfor the track. Use the volume control toadjust the global volume.

6. Play along with the drum machine tempo.

7. To stop the drum machine, press theSTART/STOP buon.

Using tap tempoThe tap tempo that you input will be displayedas a BPM (Beats Per Minute) value.

1. Press the DRUM ON buon.The drum set will appear on the displayand will appear above.

2. Press the TAP TEMPO buon several times atregular intervals at the tempo that you want.The Beat Boy detects the interval usedwhen pressing the buon and displays itas a BPM (Beats Per Minute) value, andsets it as the tempo.When the BPM detected by the tap tempois less than 30, the tempo will be set at 30.If the BPM detected by the tap tempoexceeds 252, the tempo will be set at 252.

3. Press the START/STOP buon to startthe drum machine.The display of the drum set variesaccording to the tempo. The TAP TEMPObuon will blink in time with this motion.Note:The tap tempo can also be input whilethe drum machine is in use.

5. To stop the drum machine, press theSTART/STOP buon.

Using the tuner and drum machinesimultaneously

The Beat Boy lets you use the tuner and thedrum machine simultaneously.For more details on the functionality of thetuner and drum machine, please refer tothe Using the tuner and Using the drummachine section.

Using the tuner and drum machine

simultaneouslyFor example, if youre playing along with thedrum machine and notice that your instrumentis not tuned correctly, you can leave the drummachine running while you tune.

Using the recorder

A total of 100 tracks can be createdwith the Beat Boy. However, a total ofapproximately 23 minutes can be recorded.When the recording time of one trackreaches 20 minutes, recording willautomatically stop. At this time, therecording time indication will continuealternating between 20:00 and End.

4. To pause recording, press the REC buon.The center indicator of the tuning guidewill blink in red.The REC icon will blink on the display.

5. To continue recording, press the RECbuon again.

6. Press the PLAY/STOP button to stoprecording.

The recording time will blink on the displaythree times.To record again, press the REC buon. Thetrack number will increase by one, and the

4. To fast rewind through the track duringplayback, press and hold down thebuon for approximately 1 second. To fastforward through the track, press and holddown the buon for approximately1 second.Each time the buon is pressed duringfast rewind through the track, the speed offast rewind will change. In addition, eachtime the buon is pressed during fastforward through the track, the speed of fastforward will change.

5. To stop playback, press the PLAY/STOP

buon.6. To continue playback from the point

where it was stopped, press the PLAY/

STOP buon again.Aer playing to the end of the recording,playback will automatically stop.

Loop playback

This function allows you to loop playbackbetween two specied points.

1. Select the track, and then play it back.

2. At the start point for loop playback, pressthe A-B/DELETE buon.Point A is specied, and the A-B icon willblink on the display.

the A-B/DELETE buon for approximatelyone second; the entire track will be speciedas the region for loop playback.

Deleting a track

1. With the recorder stopped, press the

buon or the buon to select the trackto be deleted.

2. Press the A-B/DELETE buon.The delete screen will appear on thedisplay, and the track number will blink.

3. Press the buon to delete the track.To cancel the delete operation, press the

buon.The following screen will appear on thedisplay during the delete operation.

When the delete operation is complete, therecorded track thats located either before oraer the deleted track will be selected.

If no recorded tracks remain aer the track isdeleted, will appear on the track indicatorof the display.

Using the recorder and tunersimultaneously

The Beat Boy lets you use the recorder andtuner simultaneously.

The tuner is always receiving signal from theINPUT jack/internal mic regardless of the play/record state of the recorder.The upper indicator of the display will lightup and blink as a result of using the recorderand the tuning guide simultaneously.

Note:Tuning is not performed when therecorder is in record-standby mode or whilea track is being deleted.

When the recorder and tuner are turnedon simultaneously, the recording time andplayback time do not appear on the display.

Using the recorder and drum machinesimultaneously

The Beat Boy lets you use the recorder anddrum machine simultaneously.By turning on the drum machine beforerecording, the drum machine will be

synchronized with the track during playback.This allows you to check if the recordedperformance is at the specied tempo.

A recorded track that can be played back insynchronization with the drum machine iscalled a tempo-synchronized track.

When a tempo-synchronized track is selected,the tempo-synchronized track icon ( ) willappear on the display.

The drum sound will not be recorded. Thedrum machine will be synchronized withthe track during playback.

Recording with the recorder and drum

machine synchronized1. Press the RECORDER ON buon and

DRUM ON buon to turn on the recorderand drum machine, respectively.The , recording/playbacktime, pattern number, tempo, tempo-

synchronized track icon, drum set andtrack number will appear on the display.

2. Press the REC buon to enter record-standby mode.

The center indicator of the tuning guidewill blink in red.The REC icon, tempo-synchronized trackicon and track number will blink on thedisplay.The display of the drum set variesaccording to the tempo and the TAPTEMPO buon will blink in time withthis motion.The time indication in the display willalternate between the precount number

and the available recording time.The precount can be specied with tempo-synchronized recording ()step 4).The drums will sound from the speakers.With the START/STOP buon, you canselect whether or not the drums will sound.

Regardless of whether or not the drumssound, the drum machine is running.

3. Specify the drum machine tempo andpaern.

4. Press the buon to select the precount.

The precount switches each time the buonis pressed. The available precount seingswill differ depending on the selecteddrum paern.

5. Press the PLAY/STOP button or theREC buon.

Playing back the tempo-synchronized track

1. Press the buon or the buonto select the tempo-synchronized trackto play back.When a tempo-synchronized track isselected, the tempo-synchronized trackicon will appear on the display.

2. Press the PLAY/STOP buon to play backthe tempo-synchronized track.The tempo and drum paern numberwill be set to the tempo and drum paernnumbers that are stored as track data.Playback will start 1 beat aer the buon

is pressed. 0:00 will continue to blinkon the time indicator of the display untilplayback starts. When playback of thetempo-synchronized track starts, the drum

Connecting a computer

By using the USB cable to connect the Beat Boyto a computer, the Beat Boy can be used likea regular USB device.

Recorded data can be transferred to thecomputer, or music data saved on thecomputer can be transferred to the Beat Boy.

When the Beat Boy is connected to acomputer, the tuner, drum machine andrecorder do not run.

Replace the batteries. Recording is not

Vous pourrez copier les donnes enregistres parle Beat Boy sur votre ordinateur, ou les donnes

musicales de votre ordinateur au Beat Boy.Le Beat Boy est en mesure de lire les donnesaudio PCM mono et stro au format WAV16 bits 44,1 kHz.

Pendant la lecture dun chier au formatWAV stro, la bote rythmes nest pasdisponible.

Formatage avec alimentation USB

1. Meez le Beat Boy hors tension.

2. Appuyez et maintenez le bouton A-B/DELETE et le bouton REC tout en utilisantle cble USB pour connecter le Beat Boy lordinateur.Le Beat Boy entre dans le mode formatage.Lcran suivant sachera.

Pour annuler la procdure de formatage,

appuyez sur le bouton .3. Appuyez sur le bouton pour commencer

le formatage.
