The monitoring of drinking water in com- munities forms part of AfriForum’s #skoon- water initiative. “We want to continuously ensure that South Africans’ constitutional right to access to clear, running water is protected,” says Thomas van Dalen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for the Eastern Cape. “It is important that drinking water and sewage be tested regularly.” According to Kouga Municipal spokesper- son, Laura-Leigh Randall, it is a great compli- ment to be rated so favourably by a civic rights organisation such as AfriForum, who take their role as watchdogs very seriously. “It is also very encouraging for staff tasked with maintaining the quality of Kouga’s drinking wager and sewage outflow. It con- firms that they are doing a good job.” Randall says, the municipality does regular water and sewage tests. “Tests are done at least monthly by taking samples and sending them to independent laboratories for bacteri- al and chemical analysis as to ensure that the water is treated correctly for drinking pur- poses. THERE is no need to spend your hard-earned cash on bottled water in Jef-freys Bay.

Jeffreys Bay water was given the thumbsup by the civil rights organisationAfriForum,who have recently released their blue andgreen drop reports after carefully monitoringthe quality of drinking water (blue drop) andsewage (green drop) in the town. Their find-ings show improvements in the quality of Jef-freys Bay’s water infrastructure.

According to the blue drop report, JeffreysBay’s drinking water is fit for human con-sumption, while the green drop report indi-cates that the town has clear sewage withinthe set microbiological standards.The monitoring of drinking water in com-

munities forms part of AfriForum’s #skoon-water initiative.“We want to continuously ensure that

THE long-awaited housing developments inHumansdorp and Jeffreys Bay took majorsteps towards realisation with the announce-ment of two contractors by the Human Settle-ments Member of the Executive Council, Hel-en Sauls-August, on Friday.

Bendolite Consortium was appointed to dothe internal services and the construction of391 homes at Kruisfontein in Humansdorp,while Jade Africa will be responsible for theinternal services for theproject of 1 500homesin Ocean View, Jeffreys Bay.The contractors were unveiled at two pub-

lic meetings that respectively took place attheKruisfonteinCivicHall andPellsrusCom-munity Hall.“We are confident that these developments

will not just bringhouses, but anecessaryeco-nomic injection through jobs and sub-con-tracting,” said Sauls-August.She said contractorswere expected tomake

use of at least 30% local labour.Sauls-August added that the priority in

and Jeffreys Bay. The funds were made avail-able by theDepartment of HumanSettlement.The bulk infrastructure was necessary to

unlock the construction of houses, whichcould thus far not be realised due to nationalregulations.Kouga ExecutiveMayor thanked the commu-

farm is on ourmembers’ doorstep, the visitis an opportunity that most people haven’tyet had the privilege to make; the visitmakes thewind farmmore accessible to thecommunity as a whole.”The NPO, which is committed to

strengthening the economic resilience ofvulnerable families andmarginalised com-munity members through savings groupsin the Eastern Cape has been supported bythe Wind Farm since 2014. “We put ourweight behind this local organisation astheyoffer valuable financial empowermentprogrammes to their members, 85% ofwhich are women.The organisation was launched in 2009,

To-date, Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm has contrib-uted over R810 970 to Mpendulo Savings.The donation forms part of their socio-eco-nomic development programme which im-pacts positively on the communities in Hu-mansdorp, Hankey and Patensie areas.The NPO has over 2000 members and has

been successful in helping its members togain economic independence, avoidingdebt and providing access to small loanswith which to start small businesses. Thecore business revolves around moderni-sing the traditional South African stokvel(rotating savings and credit association) toenhance profitability of micro-businesseswhile minimising risk to the household;provide anopportunity to build savings; re-lieve pressure on the familywhen crises oc-cur by creating a savings safety net; im-prove, maintain or diversify income flows;avoid irreversible coping strategies thatdestroy future income earning capacity;help members get out of debt and avoid in-formal money lenders; improve householdbudgets; enable vulnerable families to ac-cumulate household assets and to build so-cial capital within communities wherethereareweakbonds, thus creatinga socialsafety net.

oorspronklike skoonheid te herstel. Hulle sou poog om’n goedversorgde voorstad te ontwikkel – met mooiparke, skoon strande en ’n veilige omgewing. Hulle hoopwasdat dié faktoremettertyd sou lei tot ’n beter reputasievan die voorstad en huispryse bestendig sou maak.In 2015 is begin om sypaadjies en oop erwe skoon te

maak, stopstraattekens te verf, sekere afvalprodukte tehersirkuleer en die strand skoon te hou. Hulle toewyding

Vossi inkorporeer sedert middel April bid-ure en ’n oefenprogram vir bejaardes. Bidurevind op Dinsdae plaas, terwyl inwoners op ’nDonderdag hul stywe litte ’n bietjie kan reken strek.

Volgens Vossi is enige bejaarde of kind wel-kom om by die program aan te sluit - hulledeure staan vir almal oop, ongeag waar jywoon.

Inwoners is dankbaar dat hul nood in aggeneem is en dat hulle by die program inge-skakel het.

Siena Goeda, ’n inwoner van 7de Laan, kryelke dag by die voedingskema ’n bord kos.“Dit help baie. ’n Honger persoon kan nie nor-maal funksioneer en werk nie.”

Nog ’n inwoner, Margaret Leander vanVaaldam, sê die daaglikse bord kos maak ’ngroot verskil. “Baie van ons het nie ’n bordkos in die aand by die huis nie.”

“Maar dis ook nie sommer eenvoudige, gekoopte dassenie. Dit is unieke dasse; die soort wat geld nie kan koopnie.”

Swanepoel buk af en haal ’n das versigtig uit ’n sak.“Dié das is in 1960 aan Suid-Afrikaanse atlete gegee wat

daardie tyd vir die laaste keer aan die Olimpiese Speledeelgeneem het.”

Dan spog hy met ’n grys das vol handtekeninge.“Dié is oud-Springbok Frik du Preez se das. Hierop is

die handtekeninge van rugbymanne soos Dawie de Vil-liers en Mannetjies Roux. Op ’n veiling is die das virR35 000 waardeer.”

Ook ’n das van Clive Rice, voormalige kaptein van dienasionale krieketspan, is in Koot se trotse besit.

Selfs ’n pikswart das met die kenmerkende rooi sirkelen drie sewes van die Afrikaner-Weerstandsbeweging(AWB) is in die versameling.

“Dit is my vriend, Eugène Terre’Blanche, se das.”Volgens Swanepoel het hy en die AWB-leier saam in

Klerksdorp gewoon en om braaivleisvure gekuier.“Maar dit is lank gelede. Die Here het intussen my handgeneem en my ’n hele nuwe pad gewys.”

Prof. Jonathan Jansen, rektor van die Universiteit vandie Vrystaat, vreemdelinge in winkelsentrums en talleander by troues het al op Swanepoel se vriendelike ver-soek das losgeknoop en aan hom oorhandig.

“Ek stel myself altyd voor as die man met die grootste,mees unieke dasversameling in Suid-Afrika en dan weierek om hulle te los tot ek die das het,” skerts Swanepoel.

Intussen versamel en bewonder hy elke “storie” watdie embleme op dasse hom “vertel” en is hy van plan omsy bykans 3 000 dasse met hul stories in die dorp se Skul-piesmuseum uit te stal.

“Net soos die uitstal van skulpies ’n eerste is, sal mydasversameling ook ’n eerste wees.”

Petro Meyer van die Humansdorp Museum is vir die daagliksebestuur van die Skulpiesmusem verantwoordelik, en sy sê diebeoogde geskenkwinkel sal plaaslike aandenkings aan toeristeverkoop. Plaaslike entrepreneurs sal voorkeer kry om hul gehal-te-ware by die museum te verkoop.

Toe dié voël na ’n kleinskaalse reddingspoging naAfri-can Dawn geneem is, ’n voël-en-diere-rehabilitasiesen-trum in Thornhill, het die eienaar, Percy Hickman, homdadelik onder sy vlerk geneem.“Daar was niks om oor te dink nie,” sê Hickman. “Hy

moet ’n normale lewe kan lei.”Hickman vertel een van hul gereelde besoekers het

voorgestel dat hulle 3D-gedrukte kunspote vir die sekre-tarisvoël maak.“Hy het nie op hom laat wag nie. Daar is reeds foto’s

van sy stompies geneemenna ’nmaatskappygestuurwatmet 3D-drukkers werk,” sê Hickman.“Ons wag nou net om van hulle terug te hoor. Dit is

net ’n kwessie van tyd voor hy saam met sy nuwe ge-veerde vriende kan ‘dans’ en alles doen wat ander voëlsdoen.”Volgens Hickman het die sekretarisvoël ’n paar weke

gelede in ’n doringdraad vasgevlieg en verstrengel ge-raak. “Ons vermoed hy het ’n paar dae in die heining vas-gesit voor iemand op hom afgekom het. Daar was reedsmaaiers in sy vlerke en die bloedsomloop na sy pote wasafgesny,” sê Hickman. Van die begin af het ons probeerom so min moontlik van die pote te verwyder. Ons moesuiteindelik altwee pote by die enkels verwyder.”Sy stompies keer hom egter nie om trots in sy nuwe

tuiste rond te pronk nie - dit lyk as’t ware of hy salig on-bewus is van sy voetlose penarie.Alhoewel hy spekvet en gesond is, sal hy nooit weer

in die natuur vrygelaat kan word nie, omdat hy nie teentopspoed sal kan hardloop of sy prooi met sy prostese-pote kan skop of vastrap nie.

African DawnDié sekretarisvoël is een van duisende diere, veral voëls,wat oor bykans twee dekades ’n veilige hawe by AfricanDawn gevind het. Die rehabilitasiesentrum spog metmeer as 5 000 voëls van 250 verskillende spesies en klei-ner diere. Dit sluit in die ontwykende Knysna loerie endie majestieuse witkruisarend. Cheetahs, tierboskatte,bloukraanvoëls, mahem-kraanvoëls en blou duikersvorm deel van hul bedreigde-spesie teelprogram.Hulle kry gereeld nuwe aankomelinge. Die oudste in-

woner was ’n rooikat wat vir 19 jaar by die rehabilitasie-sentrum gewoon het.Waarmoontlik, laat hulle die gerehabiliteerde diere in

die natuur vry, maar dit is nie altyd moontlik nie. Somsisdie invloedvanmensenet te groot, en sal diedierenooitin die natuur oorleef nie.Hickman - eens ’n bankier, rekenmeester en selfs ’n

werker by ’n hoenderplaas - het 19 jaar terug finaal be-sluit die stadslewe isnie virhomnie.Geevir hom ’nplaasen diere - dan is hy op sy gelukkigste.VolgensHickman,wat vankleins af tot die redding van

voëls gekom het, het African Dawn klein begin. Oor diejare het dit gegroei tot waar dit vandag is. In plaas daar-van om voëls of diere weg te wys, het hy net meer en gro-ter hokke begin bou. THE JBay Recycling Project in Pellsrus,Jeffreys Bay is looking for volunteers toassist them between 11:30 to 17:00 onMon-days.Volunteers between the ages of 10 and 85,

are needed to help set up the “shop” at 11:30.This involves carrying boxes filledwith

stock, getting clothes on rails and unpack-ing toys and shoes. Assistance is further-more required to help the children wait-ing in line for their turn to hand in theirrecyclables and in return receive some“mula”which they can swop for toiletries,food, school supplies and clothes. Volun-teers are also needed to help in the shop.They can furthermore assist with

weighing and sorting the recyclablemate-rial brought to the project by the children,as well as recording all recyclables and

helping the children wash their hands.Duties also include acting as a shop as-

sistant for the children, handing out offood, registering children, filing of regis-tration cards and stock taking at the endof the trading day.The only qualifications that volunteers

Sykes was thehighest placed South African in the u.18 Boys Division.

liams who was crowned the 2015 Quiksilver King Of TheGroms, and is part of the new crew represented in thisevent.

The lone goofy-footer out of the crew, JBay surfer JosheFaulkner has excellent local knowledge out at the Supersline-up, which he will no doubt use to his advantage.

The waiting period for the JBU Supertrial is June 1 to12, with one full day needed to surf the event to comple-tion.

The JBU Supertrial forms part of the JBay Winterfest,the sporting andmusic festival that will take place in Jef-freys Bay from July 6 to 17.
