CALM has been restored in Dutywa, butMbhashe ratepayers and residents say theycannot promise for how long.Dutywawas chaotic last week as residents

vented their anger on the streets after themunicipality failed to meet its deadline fora petition served last month.Dutywa residents and ratepayers closed

the town, burning tyres, throwing stonesand dumping rubbish in the streets. They demanded the municipality address

their grievances immediately. The intervention of Cooperative Govern-

ance and Traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xa-sa managed to restore calm.A meeting of the MEC, mayor Nonceba

Mfecane and residents’ representatives last-ed until the early hours of the morning. The resolution after the meeting was that

the municipality would have seven days toact on the demands presented in the peti-

tion.At the time of printing, the seven days giv-

en to the municipality had lapsed. When asked what would happen after the

seven days, residents leader Xolani Rhulu-meni said they had to wait until then, butdid not rule out another demonstration.Speaking about the mayhem last week, he

said he was grateful for the intervention ofthe MEC as “the mayor had no idea how tohandle the situation in her ownmunicipali-ty”.Top of the demands in the petition is the

housing issue. The protesters claim the municipality

failed to deliver on the promised 99 RDPhouses in Willowvale and say the state ofRDP houses in Elliotdale is insulting. Also high on their list is the issue of drop

toilets in Willowvale.Rhulumeni said with the extra seven days

given to the municipality, they needed tosee action in their respective areas.

THE “Outsourcing must fall” movement atWalter Sisulu University says the strugglewill continue even though workers havebeen told to go back to their daily duties.

Workers at WSU’s Nelson Mandela Drivecampus continue to show their displeasureabout how their grievances have been dealtwith by the institution.

Last week the movement protested outsidethe institution, demanding the universitymanagement act swiftly on their demands.

Outsourcing committee member LubabaloBango said going back to work did not meanthey had given up on their fight to be in-sourced.

He said they had consented to going backto their positions, but were unhappy aboutthe treatment of the protesters.

He said the conditions the protesters werebeing forced to endure upon returning towork were unfair, while some were withoutemployment because of their involvement in

the campaign. The protesters claimed they were either

not being paid or sometimes only received aportion of their salaries.

“What doesn’t sit well with us is allowingthe company to do as it pleases to those whohave joined the outsourcing movement,”Bango said.

“They keep saying the strike is illegal, butthe strike cannot be legal because we can’tfollow all the processes.”

The protesters said they had given Xho-bani Security Services until May 1 to rein-state the workers in their previous posts.

They also said having the National Educa-tion, Health and Allied Workers Union in thediscussions had not assisted them.

They claimed the workers union was onlykeen on ending the strike instead of helpingwith their grievances.

“They don’t even mention outsourcing intheir discussions,” Bango said.

The institution could not meet the outsour-cing movement last week as it was busy withgraduation ceremonies.

SMALL, Medium and Micro-sized Enter-prises (SMMEs) have appealed to PremierPumullo Masuale and his MECs to addresstheir concern about a lack of support forSMMEs by the province.

In a letter they said: “We as SMMEs oper-ate under the impression that more SMMEswould create and sustain more jobs and(thus) the more poverty will be eradicatedin this province.

“We operate under the impression thatour Eastern Cape provincial governmentwants to promote SMMEs to create much-needed jobs.”

They stressed that all departments mustdistribute fairly to SMMEs, with specifictargets for how many SMMEs they wanted

to create in the province and how manyjobs they wanted to create each financialyear.

They called on the premier and his cabi-net to ensure that SMMEs benefited fromtenders like distribution of stationery, textbooks, school furniture, security servi-ces, cleaning services, social facilitation, hotel accommodation and so forth.

Speaking on behalf of the SMMEs, AndileNontso said: “We partner with universi-ties’ faculties of commerce to assist with re-search on how many unemployed we havein the province, how many SMMEs we mustcreate each financial year and how manyemployees each SMMEs can employ. Thiscould lead to annual targets,” he said.

Nontso said they wanted to meet soon andcome up with a plan of how to force depart-

ing system to cut costs by promoting exist-ing programnes fully.

“How do we ensure that SMMEs are deep-ly involved in the Mzimvubu project, theCoffee Bay project, the Magwa tea corpora-tion, new industries in Mthatha and thePort St Johns habour? How do we ensureSMMEs through their chamber of businessare represented on all boards of govern-ment entities in the province, for exampleCoega, the ECDC, IDT, IDZ, liquor andtourism boards, universities, TVET colleg-es, councils and hospital boards?

“How do we use grants and food parcelsto promote SMMEs and create jobs in thisprovince?

“How do we ensure that locally producedproducts are bought by government agen-cies without compromising procurementlaws?

“How do we push national companiestrading in our towns to source some of theirproducts from local manufacturers and lo-cally produced goods?

“Which areas of economy in this prov-ince do not have black representatives toensure that our SMMEs venture into all ar-eas of our provincial economy?” Nontsosaid.

To come up with answers to what Nontsowas asking, a provincial business summitis expected to take place soon to discussthese and set up a task team to deal withthe implementation of the resolutions.

At the time of going to print, the officeof the premier had not yet received the let-ter from the SMMEs.

ST Johns College, an Eastern Capeschool known for producing good re-sults every year, will take part in the2016 SA Institution of Civil Engineer-ing (SAICE) bridge-building competi-tion in Gauteng on August 26.A team of three pupils from this

school beat teams of five other highschools from Mthatha in a competi-tion held recently. Each team was given a set of 25

wooden sticks and some glue. After a brief explanation of the ba-

sic principles of construction, theybegan work on their model bridges, applying great concentration, dedi-cation and ingenuity to come up withoutstanding bridges. These were then judged on aesthet-

ic value, mass and load-bearing ca-pacity.

The aimwas for something elegant, simple, light and strong – as is thecase in real-life bridges.

Sive Mbulali, Siyanda Cebisa andSikhangele Cwayi from St Johns Col-lege produced the winning bridge, able to bear a load of 71kg before itbuckled and snapped.Their science teacher, Zolisa Dlam-

ini, was thrilled about his pupils’achievement.

The team will be sent to the SAICEnationals in Gauteng, pitting them-selves against the best young engi-neers in the country.

Tamba Gungu, vice-chair of Mthat-ha SAICE, said the aim of the compe-tition was to stimulate a love of engi-neering in pupils and give them ataste of science in action.

“Many civil engineers of today ac-quired their first taste of civil engi-neering through this competition, which has been held in other bran-ches for more than 25 years, but hadnot been held in Mthatha for at least12 years,” he said. “As civil engineer-ing is one of our country’s scarceskills, this was a great opportunityto encourage youngsters to join theranks of this exciting profession.”

WITNESSING the hardshipfaced bymany children fromhis village and formerschool, Lusanda Gexa madea promise to himself tochange the lives of as manyof them as possible. He founded Ezakuthi Life

Skills and Sports Develop-ment, a company whose solemission is to work with un-derprivileged children. The company is focused

on life skills and interven-tion projects for pupils andfinding bursaries for pro-spective students. The five-year-old compa-

ny recently donated schoolshoes to needy pupils at theNcedana Junior SecondarySchool in Willowvale.

Gexa said he planned to goback to the school with moreshoes before the end of theyear to give to those he hadnot been able to reach thistime around.Children in grade R were

the first beneficiaries of thegesture from the companyand he said the plan was togive back to each and every

grade at his former schoolbefore spreading his wingsfurther.“The situation here is not

very nice,” he said. “Manyparents are struggling tomake ends meet and afterwitnessing that I had a con-versation with my wife andwe decided we needed to dosomething.

“We decided to tackle thisclass by class to make itmore affordable.”He said he hoped many

businesses would come for-ward with funding in sup-port of the mission he hadtaken on.

“So far the funds comestraight from our pockets, but I am hopeful that we willget the support,” he said.

Principal Mbulelo Mago-da said they were proud ofthe unexpected gesture fromone of their former pupils.“This place is very disad-

vantaged and many arestruggling and this gesturewill make these kids feelgood about themselves andencourage them in theirstudies as well,” Magodasaid.

THE Mthatha Hospital Complex celebrated In-ternational Nursing Week by rendering freehealth services to the people.International Nursing Week is celebrated in

honour of Florence Nightingale, who is recog-nised as the founder of modern-day nursing.Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital nursing

service manager Ayanda Mjali said the nurseshaddecided to take their services to the commu-nity to help those who struggled to make it tohospitals.“We just wanted to remind people that the

nursingprofessionisstillonlyheretohelpthem.“Wewanted people to come and test for what-

ever illness they wanted to test without thetrouble of having to go to the hospital,” Mjalisaid. The nurses set up stands at three malls in

Mthatha (BTNgebs, CircusTriangle andPlaza).Peoplewere tested fordiabetes, sugar levelsanddental hygiene.

“We know there might be people who havelots of questions about nurses, but what we cansay is that we are here for them.“Even though we might face challenges and

havingpeople complainaboutnurses, ourmainaim is to be the profession that cares for peopleand we take the calling to serve people serious-ly,” she said.Mjali said the celebration was also a way of

reminding nurses of their role in communities.ShesaidFlorenceNightingalehadbeenabout

givingpeoplehopeand thisneeded tobecarriedon by the current nurses in the country. “Wegive people hope and, more than themedicines,we provide for people needing to be healed psy-chologically,” she said. The hospital complex ended the celebration

by lighting candles to send a message sayingthey were the light of the world.

DUE to the drastic increase in the numberof needy people who need help in South Af-rica, especially in winter, the Salvation Ar-my is appealing to the public to donateblankets, clothing and food for those inneed. The Salvation Army said the increase

had created a problem because they did not

have enough clothes or food to donate to thepoor and this is of great concern especiallywith winter fast approaching.Major Carin Holmes of the Salvation Ar-

my said: “Every yearwe seemore andmorepeople coming for help to our doors.“With unemployment at such high levels

in our country, people are finding it ever

more difficult tomake endsmeet. Your gen-erous donations really go a long way to-wards helping us fulfil their needs,”Holmes said. The Salvation Army assists people by

providing shelter, food, clothing and blan-kets to help them through the cold wintermonths.

“Giving help can be as simple and easyas sending an SMSmessage to our helpline,42290, with the word “Winterhelp” in theSMS.“The cost of the SMS is only R30, the vast

majority of which we receive and whichgoes towards assisting the needy,” Holmessaid. – REPORTER

There must be no sacrificesI wonder what these silly boys are going tosay. Don’t worry but what we are sure of,what we are going to say will mould you dearreader and show you a good direction in life.Okay ke, tells us the news.Come closer and read this part of umgosi

column attentively, then you will get whatwe promised you.Bafethu when things are still sweet like a

honey in your intimate relationship, don’tcommit unnecessary fouls and decisionswhich may eventually cause repentance. You must always be original and take deci-sions coming from the bottom of your heartnot based or forced by the relationship thatyou are in at that particular time. There must be no termination of existing

relationships if you have thembecause of thenew relationship. Theremust also be no stop-ping of your things or habit that you weredoing in life because of this relationship, be-cause nalo mntu awukamazi nokuba yenaunjani qha wenza nje kuba ubethwa lut-hando.Lifemust continue until you get a good and

mutual understanding with a new partner.Perhaps he/she can be the right person foryou because nobody knows where the suc-cess lies. There are guys who made these

blunders leaving their ‘straight’ girlfriends’(if not wives) unaware that they put them-selves in a hive of bees.Even our buddywho is in trouble nowwith

his new girlfriend, we cannot help him outbecause he took decisions based on a new af-fair, now things are bitter and he wants togo back to the old girlfriend, but wamshiyakabuhlungu embonakalisela ukuba seyajolaand akanandaba naye.Engakamazi u-new girlfriend ukuba is a

devil uqobo lwakhe. So guys be careful. Uk-wenza i-decision ngathi wenzela omnyeumntu kuba ufumene izandla ocinga ukubazishushu kanti? So ke ungalahli imbo yakhongoPhoyiyana. Mfethu zicubhele udakalwakho nguwe owawuzifakile isaya kubanguwe oyakuzikhupha.

This is strong advice guysWhy do you follow her if both ended the

affair? This goes straight to the men of thesoil who continue abusing if not followingtheir former girlfriends after their relation-ship ended. This is not the right way to dothings. If your girlfriend decided to leave you be-

cause of some circumstances she was unableto endure in the relationship, there is noneed to follow her. It was disgusting what we

experienced in Frere (KwaBhaca), when wesaw a former boyfriend who attacked hisformer girlfriend in front of a pub becauseshe was with another man.OW! He is silly. Boetie, she is no longer

your girlfriend – she moved on why ngokuyou are after her. And even by the time shewas telling you, you never disputed that. Ku-phinde kwathin ngoku xa umbona nenye in-doda?Makungadlalwa ngoosisi bethu apha. The

boyfriend was so cool but if it was me Geshebezodibana with a very hot clap ibiyokum-enza angaphinde ahluphane neentombi zab-anye abantu amacherrie engaka apha em-nyango. Stop it ke bro kungenjalo uzakuli-mala.Ngula mfana qha onganyamezela la nto

ubuyenza amanye amadoda ayakuvunywayila ntombazana soze ayinyamezele le ubuy-enza.I wonder if that lady can meet you going

with your girlfriend lona kufanele lithiningawe? Hoping that you do have an answerfor this question. But I don’t think she wouldbehave like the way you did. Come on sishu-mani sakuthi.

I wonder if they come to church to preachor to ask forgiveness?

We are not fighting against the pastors andreverends in the Express land, but we arefighting with the fake and corrupt pastorsand reverends who mislead our people in aholy place of God like churches. There are some who get a chance to pro-

pose or rob love from our sisters, hiding un-der the umbrella of God. Some go there mas-querading as envoys of Godwhereas they arefrom dark roads of criminality and now theyare there to ask forgiveness. Ziyathetha keezi ntwana zomgosi xa sezisukile.Ja, because our Heavenly Father sent us

to this beautiful lady South Africa to conveygood news to His people. The story of KZNpastor who confessed he raped and killed aninnocent young woman in cold blood, butnow asks for forgiveness from the family ofthe woman. So it came to ourmind that thesepastors are in church for spreading the wordof God or to ask forgiveness? That’s why some are acting as pastors in

churchwhilst at the same time they are sexu-ally abusing the young girls and our sistersif not kotis of our brothers behind the churchbuilding and doors if not in the B&Bs.Uyakubabetha uBawo because that place

is holy and it needs holy people who spreadHis word to his sheep. Nivile moss. Masikesihambe thina till next time, God bless.

most effective mechanisms to alleviateabuse of alcohol among young people, andtheEasternCapeLiquorBoardhas adoptedthe same approach of utilising sports to

keep young people away from consumingliquor.“The theme is ‘Booze is not for learners’

andwewill be giving out prizes for the com-peting teams,” Fani said.“We have adopted the schools for a three-
