Kyung Hee UniversityTowards Global Eminence

Since its establishment in 1949, Kyung Hee University has

developed into a comprehensive education system that ranges from

kindergarten to graduate school. Three campuses actually constitute

the University: the tree-lined 245-acre Seoul Campus, the 510-

acre Global Campus situated along the shores of beautiful Singal

Lake in Suwon, and the 12-acre Kwangnung Campus nestled in a

serene environment to the north of Seoul. Dr. Young-Seek Choue,

the Chancellor-Founder of the Kyung Hee University System,

founded the university on the idea that the barriers that insulate

academia from society must be broken, and he strove to impart to

students not only academic knowledge, but also an awareness of

their responsibilities to the global society. This belief was manifest

in the University’s founding philosophy of creating a “New Civilized

World”and in the University motto, “Democratization of School,

Ideas, and Living.” By upholding his philosophy and maintaining

his vision, the University has succeeded not only in international

scholarly endeavors, but in bringing mankind one step closer to

universal peace and understanding.

MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE AT KYUNG HEE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL

Kyung Hee University Law School was founded on the spirit and purpose of raising excellent legal

professionals equipped with the leadership in the global era and zeal to service the society and nation. The

ever-developing information and communication technology and globalization, along with the opening of legal

market, have created the demand for internationally competitive lawyers.

Kyung Hee University Law School and its highly decorated legal scholars have focused on providing

the first-rate legal education to students, resulting in the record 100% passage rate in the first National Bar

Examination, and after the second National Bar Examination, still maintain the 1st place passage rate, two

years running. Our alumni are actively engaged in professional endeavors in courts, prosecutor’s offices,

law firms, public institutions and corporations. Since the inception, Kyung Hee University Law School has

proactively adapted to and prepared for changes in the legal environment in Korea, firmly establishing ourselves

as one of the premier law schools in Korea.

What makes Kyung Hee University Law School extraordinary can be described in several aspects:

First, the faculty of Kyung Hee University Law School comprises professors highly recognized for their

practical and theoretical expertise, devoted to raising highly competent legal professionals, especially in the

area of corporate law practice.

Second, the top-notch facility and educational system work together to provide the environment

conducive for students to hone skills and in-depth knowledge of the law.

Third, the community of undergraduate and law school students and alumni, as well as university

IntroductionTowards Global Eminence

07

Kyung Hee University Law School (KHLS) is situated

in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. As a center

of trade, finance and technological innovation, Seoul is a

leading center of trade, finance and technological innovation

in the global economy. Increasingly, Seoul is a magnet for

foreign investment and multinational enterprises.

KHLS offers a first-rate professional education in

legal sciences and strives to produce highly trained students

whose legal expertise will contribute to societal well-

being. To this end, the program focuses on the principles

and practice of law in general, as well as on the specifics

of Korean law. Our forward-looking curriculum includes

contemporary areas of interest, such as intellectual property

law, economic law and environmental law.

The economic realities of globalization require that

KHLS graduates be well prepared for the complex legal

relationships involved in diverse foreign legal cultures. As

a result of the World Trade Organization’s liberalization of

international trade, law firms and business organizations

have placed a higher demand than ever before on experts

on international legal affairs. To better prepare for the

internationalization of legal practice, KHLS has committed

substantial resources to the study of international and

comparative law. Students may take various courses in

transnational and global legal studies focusing on business

law. Students interested in international cross-border issues

may apply for the Graduate School of International Legal

Affairs at Seoul campus.

In addition to its regular curriculum, KHLS offers

a variety of special opportunities including participation

in moot court, observation tours to courts, mock bar

examinations and group study during semester breaks.

KHLS ultimately prepares students, upon completion of

a master’s degree, for doctoral law programs, the bar

examination, the higher civil service examination and various

careers in the legal profession.

Life at KHLS

27

The City

The School of Law is situated in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. Seoul means “capital” in

archaic Korean language. With a population of more than ten million, Seoul today is a modern metropolis

with many first-class hotels. It is a city of contrasts: bustling traffic runs alongside quiet palace gardens,

and modern skyscrapers tower over centuries-old royal shrines. Four palaces from the Chosun

Dynasty(1392-1897), all with lovely gardens still remaining, provide visitors the opportunity to enjoy the

elegant architecture of ancient Korea.

Housing

• On Campus housing: There are two on-campus housing options at KHLS, both of which are available

to international and Korean students. Sehwawon Dormitory, opened in March 2005, is modern and

convenient. A room with a bathroom is shared by two students. The dormitory can accommodate

432 students in total. Preference will be given to students from the University’s sister institutions

abroad and Korean students who show high academic achievement. Sehjinwon Law School

Dormitory opened in September 2009 with the most up-to-date facilities and can accommodate 64

student in total.

• Off-Campus Housing: Although students are strongly encouraged to live in a dormitory. One-and Two

-room studio apartment can be rented on a monthly basis. These apartment can also be leased using

a monthly rental key money system known as joen-sae. Boarding houses are also off-campus housing

options. Some boarding houses include meals and laundry service. The cost depends on the number

of people per room, the number of meals, and the type of laundry service. Private boarding houses

in Korea require a deposit, which caries from 10 to 20 times the actual monthly rent. However, this

deposit is returned at the end of the lease.

Student Activities

• Students can pursue academic and extra-curricular interests through a variety of clubs and organizations.

Joining a club or organization is as simple as attending a meeting and expressing the interest. Most of the

club offices are located in the Student Center Building next to Crown Hall / College of Music.

• International students are welcome to join the International Friendship & Culture Club (IFCC), supported

by the Center for International Exchanges, which holds regularly scheduled meetings, welcoming parties,

field trips, sports activities and other activities.
