The alumni viewWhere does an Executive MBA at London BusinessSchool lead? We’ll let some of our graduates tell you

My role with the Executive Council in AbuDhabi involves performance reporting

     across areas including health, education

and infrastructure. There’s also a focus on planning; Abu Dhabi is rapidly expanding, and managing these areas is challenging and exciting. It was this that led me to apply for the EMBA programme. I knewof the School’s strong ranking and wantedto continue working while I studied.

The programme has helped me develop my leadership and change-management skills. Studying alongside otherexperienced professionals from a range of

industries was intensely thought- provoking, and we all contributed ourexperiences and challenged each other. Many courses stand out, such asDeveloping Effective Managers andOrganisations, which explored leadership,decision-making and creative problem

solving. It changed how I think – mythinking is now more structured, and I find

it easier to mobilise individuals. This has resulted in a more consistent, collective approach that has empowered my team.

The programme changed my perspective. In lectures, I’d suddenly realise I could

improve my approach and start thinking about how I’d manage situationsdifferently in the office. I also got a huge

rush listening to guest speakers, many ofwhom were successful entrepreneurs.

Both the London and Dubai schedules are packed with lectures, guest speakers, coaching, and networking events andI loved every minute. The experience

provides concrete business benefits, too;I now have a much stronger knowledge

base across economic, finance and accounting, so I’m better equipped to manage government budgets andexpenses. Understanding how businesses

succeed has enabled me to provide better public sector policies and initiatives, andto employ more efficient methodologies.

“The programme changed my perspectiveagain and again. In lectures I’d realise I hadbeen using the wrong approach to a situationand immediately started thinking about how Iwould deal with it differently back in the office.”

Zeina El Kaissi (Lebanese), EMBA (Dubai) 2012,Senior Project Manager, General Secretariat of the Executive Council in Abu Dhabi

“I’d neverhave had thecourage tostart my owncompanywithout theEMBA.”

Lidia Chmel (Russian),EMBA (London) 2012,Founder and CEO, Mama’s Dream club

After 13 years in finance, I wanted achange and I needed a broader cross

section of knowledge and skills to help me. The confidence boost I got fromLondon Business School’s EMBA

     programme certainly provided this.

I expanded my business toolkit, butwhere I’d expected a solely academicexperience, I also found practical supportof my personal and career development.Discussions and assignments made methink deeply about my goals and values, encouraging me to focus on the impactthat my work has. I’d never have had the courage to start

my own company without the EMBA.Exploring case studies and hearing from

guest speakers who had founded theirown companies showed me that it was

possible to change direction and still be successful. Understanding general management was also a revelation.

Now I deal with a lot of third parties and, with limited resources, I find myself regularly referring to my Negotiation andBargaining course. The practical tools

and strategies I learned help me negotiate better conditions, prices and deals for allconcerned. My skills have already saved

me lots of money in small and major deals.

Timetabled on Fridays and Saturdays, the format allowed me to combine f amily, work and other commitments. I expected

a lot from the EMBA, but the programmedelivered that, and more.

“How youwork withcase studiesand apply thetools was areal eye-opener.”

Jimmy Maymann (Danish),EMBA (London) 2005,CEO, The Huffington Post

My career started out very differently – I was as a professional handball player in Denmark – but by the age of 25, I’d decided to move towards anentrepreneurial career path.

I spent five years at advertising firm Leo

Burnett, and it was during this period thatI completed the Executive MBA at LondonBusiness School. How you work withcases and apply the tools is a real eye-opener and extremely useful. Significantvalue was gained in discovering thefundamental dynamics of my character

     – I am good at deciding where to focus my time. And with my job, family and a huge workload, I really had to prioritise and become laser-focused on the thingsthat mattered. Developing these critical

skills equipped me to progress to the next stage of my career.

The programme reignited myentrepreneurial spirit. I created GoViralwhich was bought five years later by AOL,which then purchased The HuffingtonPost. The CEO and founder of the title

asked me to develop a strategy to rollout the brand internationally, and now

as CEO of The Huffington Post, I am inthe process of executing the strategy, focusing on opening in new markets, developing video content and ‘verticals’.

My challenge is to build great things and help The Huffington Post to become a global media brand, by applying the sound knowledge and frameworks thatI gained on the EMBA programme.
