Welcome to Leadership, Team Building & Effective Management

I’m delighted that you’ve chosen this class as one of the electives

in your advanced degree program here at UWM.

In the context of our Mission, you’ll have the chance to set and

take steps toward achieving important leadership, team-building

and effective management goals of your own as we explore our

key topic areas using contemporary, practical resources targeted

for practicing managers.

During our time together, you’ll use the ideas we’re learning to

prepare five Case Memos to solve a number of short cases. You’ll

create five Personal Apps that will allow you to apply what you’re

learning here in your own work and personal life. You’ll contribute

to a robust in-class exploration of our Mission topics. From time

to time, leaders from a variety of organizations will stop by to

share their leadership stories with us. Finally, you’ll take part in

the Ultimate YouTube Challenge. You and your colleagues will

create a Ted-Talk to post on YouTube. It’s the real-world test of

your ability to apply what we’re learning and communicate it to

others in a powerful, convincing and engaging way.

You’ll get timely, specific feedback from me on your Case Memos

and Personal Apps and from an executive panel on your YouTube

creation.

As we go forward, if there is anything you need to make this the

best possible experience for you (maybe even one of the best

classes you’ve taken in your UWM graduate program) please let

me know. We can communicate anytime by e-mail, phone, Skype or

in-person.

My job is to make sure that you’re 100% successful achieving our

Mission for the course, your own personal goals for the class and

the best possible grade. (Note that I comp you in grade $$, not

points – see Page 7.) My promise is to provide the direction and

support you need to be as successful as you want to be in

BUSMGMT 715.

Yours truly,

Dennis Sterling

AND, OF COURSE, BUSMGMT 715, LIKE ALL UWM CLASSES, CONFORMS TO THE

FOLLOWING POLICIES …

1. Students with disabilities. Notice to these students should appear prominently in the syllabus so that special accommodations are provided in a timely manner. http://www4.uwm.edu/sac/SACltr.pdf 2. Religious observances. Accommodations for absences due to religious observance should be noted http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/docs/other/S1.5.htm 3. Students called to active military duty. Students: http://www4.uwm.edu/current_students/military_call_up.cfm Employees: http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/docs/other/S40.htm 4. Incompletes. A notation of "incomplete" may be given in lieu of a final grade to a student who has carried a subject successfully until the end of a semester but who, because of illness or other unusual and substantiated cause beyond the student's control, has been unable to take or complete the final examination or to complete some limited amount of term work. http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/docs/other/S31.pdf 5. Discriminatory conduct (such as sexual harassment). Discriminatory conduct will not be tolerated by the University. Grade appeal procedures. A student may appeal a grade on the grounds that it is based on a capricious or arbitrary decision of the course instructor. Such an appeal shall follow the established procedures adopted by the department, college, or school in which the course resides or in the case of graduate students, the Graduate School. These procedures are available in writing from the respective department chairperson or the Academic Dean of the College/School. http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/docs/other/S28.htm 9. Other.
