• Established in 1878.
• Started as an agricultural college.
• Still a very strong agricultural University in Southern hemisphere.
Lincoln Uni and Hokkaido Uni (Ag) -PAST
• First Japanese student in NZ (DrIsamu Kawase) graduated Lincoln in 1934.
• Dr Kawase obtained PhD from Hokkaido University (1957).
• The founder of Jpn Grassland Assnand Japan-NZ Assn.
Lincoln Uni and Hokkaido Uni (Ag) -PRESENT
• I (Yoshi Uchida) was a student from 2002-2010 at Lincoln.
• Now, associate prof. at Hokkaido University.
• MOU and student exchange agreement (2014).
• One of the ‘wondervogel’ study sites for the new school (Graduate School of Food Resources)
New Zealand and Hokkaido Uni (Ag) -PRESENT
• PM Bill English visited Hokkaido (May 2017).
• Prof. Nawa and PM discussed on future collaboration.
• Tourism/Rugby/Dairy/Sheep…
Project Outline – my hopes and aims
• A short-course, aiming to learn English and large-scale agriculture.
– Little chance to visit ‘large-farms’ even at School of Ag, HU.
– Little chance to do ‘English presentations’ at School of Ag, HU.

Project Outline – HU students
• Eight students, 2nd-3rd year Ag undergrads.
• February 10th-24th (summer in NZ)
• Homestays (8 homestays for 8 students, full ‘English’ environment)
• Students come to campus by bus or on foot.
English school
• Requested ‘Ag-related’ lectures.
• Learning mixed with local students.
• General lectures were also taught.

• A lot of Ag students at LU (undergrads) want to come to HU.– Few Eng. Ag lectures at HU.
– Hard to find subjects ‘convertible’

• Benefits for local students– They ended up helping our students.
– Credit -> the benefit for them is small…
