Developed and created for the legendary Munkegård School in Gentofte,

Denmark, in 1955, but since spread all over the world and used in every-

thing from private residences to universities.

Munkegaard is a design icon, and the ideas behind the fixture and its pres-

ence in the room are so special that it is actually possible to talk of a

product design without any kind of architectural or cultural limitations.

Munkegaard is a carefully designed lighting fixture with regard to both its

design idiom and its lighting concept. The open slots close to the ceiling

surface and the trumpet-shaped reflector side direct the lighting out to

form a ring around the fixture. This serves two purposes: it reduces the lu-

minance transition and it pulls the ceiling surface around the fixture(s) into

the dimensions of the room.

That is why the challenges of an LED conversion of the Munkegaard fixture

have always been centred on retaining the original lighting concept

– otherwise it would not be a true Munkegaard, merely an illuminated ring

on the ceiling.

Munkegaard emits a gentle, diffuse, downward directed

light through a newly designed diffuser built up in a 2-layer

principle: a clear, toughened glass disc below and an opal

acrylic disc above. This set-up ensures retention of the origi-

nal comfortable light emission.

The challenge has always been to ensure a uniform surface

on the fixture to avoid strong points of luminance, allowing

the fixture to blend seamlessly into the ceiling surface with-

out creating extra points. The new design has solved this

problem, thus making more efficient use of the LEDs.

The LEDs themselves are powerful points of light, so the

challenge is to ensure the adequate level of light to illumi-

nate the room while simultaneously avoiding a ‘spotty’ sur-

face. Louis Poulsen has therefore developed a special layout

of LEDs with sufficient distance from the diffusing acrylic disc

and glass so as to eliminate these points.

Each LED board is specifically designed for each size. Each

LED is individually positioned to assure the best possible

light quality.

This not only allows optimal light comfort and room atmos-

phere, but also doubles the efficiency.

No unnecessary parts. In principle, the Munkegaard LED comprises three

parts:

1. Fixture housing

2. LED board

3. Diffuser

The LED board is available in a 3000K and a 4000K version, and is also

dimmable. The service life of the LED board and driver is 50,000 hours.

This makes the Munkegaard an asset to any installation. Moreover, with

the LED versions we have made it possible to reduce the recessing height

of the Ø 265 model, neatly expanding the range of application options.

Concept: The fixture looks like a disc hovering just below the ceiling – an impression primarily cre-ated by the illuminated opening and the suspended placement of the fixture below the mounting surface. The 2-layer glass/acrylic shade ensures uniform, gently diffuse lighting. This fixture gives the room the illusion of extra height.

Finish: High lustre chrome plated or satin chrome plated. Matt-white acrylic/toughened clear glass.

Material: Shade: 2-layer: matt-white acrylic and toughened glass. Edge ring: High lustre chrome plated or satin chrome plated, brass.

Mounting: Connection: Ø 265/Ø 460/Ø 525: Terminal strip 5x2.5mm². Ceiling thickness: Ø 265/Ø 460/Ø 525: 1–50mm. Cut-out dimensions: Ø 265: 245mm, Ø 460: 440mm, Ø 525: 505mm. Looping: Approved, max. 5x1.5mm².
