Posted: Monday, September 29, 2014 8:55 pm By Ronnie Ellis / CNHI News Service

FRANKFORT — Like so many Kentucky communities, Madison County and Richmond have seen a surge in the use of heroin among addicts, many of whom previously were hooked on prescription pain pills.

Sheriff Mike Coyle said after the General Assembly passed legislation in 2012 to crack down on “pill mill” clinics and pain pill abuse, “We’ve just seen an influx of drugs, especially heroin, which is on the uptick.”

So it was good news Monday when word came from Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office that Madison County and Nelson County in central Kentucky are the latest counties added to t nn he Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area or HIDTA.

McConnell’s office said he met last month with the Acting Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy — Michael Botticelli — to advocate inclusion of Madison and Nelson counties. The program provides coordination between local, state and federal authorities as well as providing equipment, technology and additional resources to fight drug production and trafficking.

What do you think should be done about the Drug problem in Richmond? 1 Paragraph min.
