Finding a mug of icy cold beer has nev-

er been a problem in Japan. The big

domestic brands are everywhere, im-

ported bottled beer are now common in ca-

fes and recently domestic craft beers are

earning admiration from serious beer con-

mother caused some loyalty issues for me

and my sisters growing up, especially when

the rugby was on. For the sake of familial har-

mony, we usually deferred to whatever team

Germany, raised mostly in Northern Ireland,

and with my uni years spent in Scotland, I

have no discernible accent (unless I’m drunk

or angry and the Belfast slant starts to creep

in), and with both a UK and an Irish passport,

the answer to this question has often caused

confusion at home. However, my multiple na-

tionality disorder has taken an increasingly

strange turn in Japan due to the unique grasp

of geography that many Japanese people

seem to possess.

Back to my students, eagerly awaiting an

answer. Considering my options, I suggest I

am from Hokkaido. They nod in agreement,

concluding that it must be true as people

from Hokkaido are a bit strange. Good to

know the north/south divide exists the world

over. However, this geographic illiteracy is

worrying in a country suffering economic de-

cline. Surely geographical knowledge is im-

portant to create citizens better equipped to

deal with the issues that are facing their own

country and to maintain perspective on the

complex cultural, political and environmental

relationships that make up our world today.

them to a solid year of watching ‘Braveheart’

as punishment.

Occasionally, as a break from inevitable

discussions of the Beatles, scones and the

Queen, I’ll use Ireland as the go-to answer.

This should be easier—no mistaking it for

another country. Sure, the north/south is-

sue can be a little tricky but we’ll leave it

out for now. However, this has proved even

more confusing, with bemused faces looking

at me asking just which island it was that I

was from. Some people thought I was from

Iceland and were even more confused that

I spoke english.

Ah, the old english language marker—at

least conclusions about my nationality can be

drawn from the fact that I’m a native speaker

of english. Unfortunately, Japan has other

ideas, with looks the most accurate indicator

of your nationality, as with one group of Japa-

nese people who, not swayed by the fact that

I don’t speak the language and have no ties to

the country whatsoever, insisted that I was

Russian because, to them, I looked Russian.

country we’ve settled on have been even

more bizarre, making me wonder just how

geography is taught at Japanese schools.

Now, I know the UK’s political relationship

with the US has, at times, been a source of

embarrassment but, to my knowledge, it did

not result in us becoming one big country, as

one student thought. The UK’s geographical

position isn’t even clear here, with one person

expressing surprise that it was a separate is-

land, having thought that it was joined to the

side of France—the english Channel being a

new revelation. I have shattered numerous

students’ dreams of visiting Paris, the capi-

tal of england, and watched in amazement as

many had trouble pinpointing any countries

すことができない学生の多さに呆れかえっているわ。　期待した答えを待ち続ける私の生徒たちに話を戻すわね。例えば、私は北海道出身ということにして、北海道出身の人は少し変わってる、ということに結論づけるのよ。世界が北と南で文化が違うことを知るのにはいい方法じゃない？でも、これほどの地学的不理解は、経済低迷している国にとっては悩ましい問題よ。もちろん地理的な知識は、それぞれの国が直面する問題、例えば文化的、政治的環境の関係とうまくやっていくことができる、理解ある市民をつくるために必要なんだと思うんだけど、これってドォーデショ？

In Fukuoka

Fekri Dzemaili is a man with a pas-

sion, and that passion is gelato!

Born in Macedonia, Fekri worked

with the sweet icy treat for 17 out

of the 26 years he lived in Italy, run-

ning his own gelato cafe for seven years in

Pesaro near Rimini. It was there he met his

wife from Fukuoka. Circumstances brought the couple to Japan and

Fekri found work as a chef in Holland Village, Nagasaki. Later they

moved to Fukuoka and Fekri worked for five years in another gelato

shop. Nowadays, you’ll find him scooping with expertise at the stylish

Wa Cafe Saon in Daimyo - a Japanese-styled version of the popular

ViTO gelato cafes. In contrast to the other ViTO shops, Wa Cafe Saon

is spacious and offers a relaxed space with an unique blend of Japa-

nese and western design. The gelato served at Wa Cafe Saon features

Kyushu inspired flavors- from Hakata amaou and Yame maccha to

yuzu sourced from Oita. The use of pure and fine ingredients is what

distinguishes their gelato from the rest. Fekri spends his spare time

with his family, playing with this three-year-old son, who is a budding

gelato fan too. He stresses how much he enjoys going to work; and

who wouldn’t, with a chance to indulge in your favorite gelato, Illy cof-

fee and the cafe’s cool interior. Fekri’s advice, “If you ever feel tired or

down, have a gelato! It will make you smile!”

We met this month’s guest

Alice, from the Philippines, in

the bright and stylish eLLe

Café. Alice herself is no strang-

er to food- she opened her own

Filipino restaurant “Delgados”

in Yakuin, 2002. She tells us,

"Many Japanese people think

Filipino cuisine is spicy, but

that's a misunderstanding. We

use lots of vegetables, with co-

conut milk and fish sauce. It's

quite mild, really."

As there aren’t many Filipino restaurants

in Fukuoka, Delgados has become a hub within

the Filipino community. Alice explains how the

Phillipines’ high unemployment forces young

people to go abroad to find jobs after graduat-

ing university. Moving far from their friends

and families can be stressful, which is why

Alice tries to support other members of the

Fillipino community in Fukuoka.

So much so, that many have come to think

of Alice as an motherly figure in Fukuoka. Peo-

ple love visiting Alice’s restaurant because

she’s always happy to chat and help them

out. Alice remembers the help that she re-

ceived when she was setting up her life in Ja-

pan - from both foreign and Japanese people

- and now she strives to help others similarly.

Soon, Delgados will also celebrate its 10th

anniversary. After 10 years of managing the

restaurant, Alice is looking positively into

the future.

9, 2012, and foreign residents will be issued

◊ kabuki by boatIn a traditional event, kabuki actors will board

boats and give a performance on the river to

attract viewers to the theater, where they will

come ashore. Nakamura Kichiemon and the

other actors appearing in the June Hakata-

za Kabuki will perform on several boats as

they call out to the people on shore while

sailing downstream, accompanied by bells,

drums, and flutes.
