DESCRIPTION
Fall has arrived in Fukuoka. This month's cover was shot inside Sumiyoshi Shrine and features our model the lovely Krysten Lundh (USA). Inside this issue we introduce two seasonal features. First up is "Autumn in Hakata" - a guide to 21 events happening this fall in the vicinity of Hakata Station, including some fabulous evening events such as "Hakata Tomyo Watching", "Hakata Kenjo Dochu" and "Hakata Light Up Walk". The second feature is about the glorious fall colored leaves that can be seen in and around Fukuoka. Check our website for 23 spots to see them at. For foodies, this month we checked out "Mr. Kebab Nishijin", which turned out to serve a number of tasty Turkish dishes besides kebab. Micaela Braithwaite appears on the snapshot page as she became the Chief of Ward, for Fukuoka Kawaii-ku – congratulations to her! And then there are shots of Fukuoka Now's Nick Szasz as he risked his life in a flight with Yoshihide Muroya - Japan's top ranked aerobatic pilot, and much more…

EVENT 1
Traditionally, “tomyo” lanterns are illu-
minated as votive offerings to the gods
and Buddha, or at memorial services (
供養). The Hakata Tomyo Watching fes-
tival started in 1994, inspired from a tra-
ditional ceremony called Sentomyo that
is held at temples and shrines in Fukuoka
and Oita in which 1,000 paper lanterns
are lit up. The beautifully illuminated pa-
per lanterns symbolize prayers for good
health and the well-being of one’s family.

By the time this goes to press,
I’ll be back in Japan after two
months in rural USA. Being a
freelancer, I go home every
year for an extended period,
and while I never really got to take a vaca-
tion, I did find some time between jobs (and
oh-so cheap American beers) to ponder the
many things I like and miss about Fukuo-
ka from my makeshift “office” in Podunk,
Pennsylvania.
First and foremost, Fukuoka has great
food! As much as I like to tell my friends in
Japan about the wonders of the Wedgie (a
sandwich made on a pizza shell; not to be
confused with the underwear pulling prank),
the food in Fukuoka beats standard Ameri-
can fare hands-down. One ill-fated attempt
to doctor a package of instant ramen with
whatever my dad had in his spice rack re-
minded me how awesome a bowl of Hakata

ramen is. I am still blown away that there
are ramen shacks that serve bowls for less
than ¥300. And with fall fast approaching,
I am glad to know I’ll be back just in time
for nabe season. Let’s not forget fresh fish.
I wouldn’t even use the “salmon” in the su-
permarket here to feed stray cats. About
the only thing Fukuoka might be missing in
this category is peanut butter pie.
Second, Fukuoka is safe. Let’s face it.
America is awash in guns. In the 20 years
that I lived in America, I never had a run-in
with a gun-wielding criminal, and most of
the people I know who have guns (i.e., al-
most everyone) are responsible with their
weapons, but with approximately one gun
for every, man woman and child in the US*
and over 32,000 gun deaths a year*, the
United States now ranks 99th on the Glob-
al Peace Index ** compared to Japan’s 6th
place. I’m not anti-gun, but I have to admit
it has been nice to have lived in a relatively
gunless society for the past 15 years, 10 of
those with kids.
Let’s talk service. Every time I go through

the behest of my 10-year old, I am reminded
of how well Japan does service. For the most
part, workers are friendly and take pride in
what they do, no matter how humble, and
they keep their workplaces clean. While the
clerks at my local supermarket in the US are
friendly, there are some places here—name-
ly, fast food joints—where you do not ex-
pect to get good service. I think even some
Japanese people take service for granted.
In my opinion, it’s one of Japan’s strongest
points, and shrewd businesspeople would
be smart to export it.
Last but not least, Fukuoka is convenient.
To be fair to my hometown, I really can’t
compare a hamlet of 7,000 to a bustling city
of 1.5 million, but compared to other major
US cities, Fukuoka is the clear winner. When
I moved here six years ago, I sold my car and
haven’t felt the need for one since. The city
is compact and easy to navigate, and public
transit options are plentiful. My preferred
mode of transportation is, in fact, my own
two feet. I love walking through the city,
taking new routes home and finding new
bars and restaurants. The US is still very
much a car-oriented society, and save for
a handful of huge metro areas, you need a
car to get around.
So these are just a few things I like about
Fukuoka (I’ll save my gripes for another col-
umn). It may sound hackneyed, but every
place has its good points and bad points.
Many foreigners, newbies and lifers alike,
may need to vent about Japan now and
again, but when your bitching becomes
chronic, maybe you need to stop and re-
member all the good things Fukuoka has
to offer. Are you taking them for granted?
Dodesho.

Koyo福岡の秋 “紅葉”
YUSENTEI PARK · 友泉亭公園Originally built in 1754 as a second home
for Kuroda Tsugutaka the 6th lord of Fukuo-
ka, Yusentei is a beautiful Japanese garden
centered on a lake. In autumn, the maples,
zelkova, oak and Japanese wax trees plant-
ed around the water undergo an autumn
transformation as the leaves change to red,
yellow, and orange. Take a stroll around the
grounds, and enjoy a Matcha Tea Set in the
garden (¥300).
Address: 1-46 Yusentei, Jonan-ku, Fukuo-
ka Koyo peak: Mid Nov. Fee: Adult ¥200,
Child ¥100
Koyo refers to the changing autumn colors of deciduous trees in
Japan. Leaves turn spectacular shades of red, yellow and brown -
depending on species - and before falling to the ground. The koyo
season lasts around 50 days, starting in Hokkaido mid-September
and making its way down Japan to Kyushu by late October.
The exact timing to see the leaves changes every year, de-
pending on weather conditions. This year’s koyo in Kyushu
is predicted to be delayed (late Oct.~early Dec.), however
it’s never too early to start planning! Decide where you want to go,
book a ryokan and prepare to see a full spectrum of autumn colors
in Kyushu.
Fukuoka Now has compiled an online guide to koyo in Fukuoka
- complete with links to useful weather resources, photographs,
maps, and our pick of twenty spots near Fukuoka to view autumn
leaves. Check the full guide online. fukuoka-now.com/koyo2013
Meanwhile here are three spots close to the city to get started
on your koyo adventures…
KOMYOZENJI · 光明禅寺Only 10 minutes walk from the train station,
this is one of the most easily accessible
spots for autumn leaf viewing in Fukuoka
City. Komyozenji is a Zen temple, located
just south of Dazaifu’s famous Tenmangu
Shrine. There’s a rock garden at the front,
however it’s the rear Japanese garden
that’s worth seeing in mid-November. Maple
tree branches hang over the immaculately
maintained garden, making the temple a
popular autumn leaf spot when they change
color and fall.
Address: 2-16-1 Saifu, Dazaifu Koyo peak:

RAIZAN SENNYOJI DAIHIOIN · 雷山千如寺大悲王院Founded by an Indian Buddhist monk, this
temple is located in the picturesque moun-
tains of Itoshima. Year-round, the large
Buddhist statues (“1,000-Armed Standing
Kannon” etc.) are a hit with visitors, but
come mid-November a spectacular dis-
play of autumn foliage is the main attrac-
tion. A 400-year-old giant maple tree (a
Municipally-Designated Natural Monument)
shows a vibrant display of autumn in Japan.
Around 200 maple trees in the surround-

People of all ages can learn about the en-
vironment at this hands-on event. Held
in the plaza on the west side of City Hall
on 10/19~20 (10:00~16:00), there will be
more than 40 booths offering a variety
of activities as well as a mammoth—an
animal though to have gone extinct due
to changes in the environment—made
from recycled cardboard.
Fukuoka City BulletinFukuoka Shisei Dayori is City Hall’s of-

◊ Asian Tropical Valley Zone Now Open Fukuoka City Zoo, celebrat-
ing its 60th anniversary
this year, is home to el-
ephants, giraffes and other
animals popular with chil-
dren. Some of the animals,
like the gorillas and Arabian
oryx, are the only ones in
Kyushu. The Zoo recently
completed the Asian Tropi-
cal Valley Zone, an “ac-
tive exhibit” which recreates a tropical
rainforest and shows how animals live in
their natural habitat. New houses for the
sun bears, leopards and hornbills provide
visitors with an exciting, up-close expe-
rience. You can also enjoy vistas of the
Zone from a new rest area.
◊ Hakata Autumn Festa 2013In October and November, a series of au-
tumn themed events are held at tourist
spots, temples and shrines around Haka-
ta. At the Hakata Lantern Arts Festival
(10/19, 18:00-21:00), rows of luminaria
arranged to form patterns light up the
streets and sites of Hakata. Other events
include Hakata Light-Up Walk, a tour of
illuminated temples (10/31~11/4, 18:00-
21:00), the Nakasu Festival, featuring res-
taurants on the river and a pub crawl, and
Oktoberfest—a celebration of German beer.
