Hace 10 años nació este festival, fruto de la voluntad de una familia por acercar sus raíces a la cuidad en la hizo su hogar y en la que nací. Por eso, cuando en alguna ocasión en algún medio extranjero me preguntan el porqué de hacer este festival en una pequeña ciudad del norte, contesto que supongo que por amor y egoísmo.

Nadie nos obligó a crear este festival hace 10 años, pero fue nuestra manera de querer a esta ciudad y a quienes son parte de ella. De darles lo que ninguna crisis, ningún banco o ningún recorte presupuestario podrá quitarles a los espectadores de este festival: la riqueza de ser parte de algo tan grande como la cultura, y, a su vez, hacerles partícipes de la libertad y la esperanza de 300 millones de personas dentro del mundo árabe.

El futuro es incierto y quizás esta crisis termine ahogando este festival, como ya ha hecho con tantas historias y tantos sueños durante estos años. Por eso, en esta edición quiero celebrar con todos los espectadores nuestro décimo aniversario. Para recordarles que las personas somos el cúmulo de experiencias, recuerdos, sueños. Que nadie nos podrá arrebatar 10 años en los que vosotros y nosotros hemos crecido en un viaje de cine.

Y he aquí la parte egoísta de esto: vosotros me habéis hecho sentirme orgulloso de formar parte de Amal, de decirle al mundo árabe que este pueblo es valiente y que cada espectador desde su butaca pudo y puede derribar los muros del miedo y la ignorancia. Saber que no hemos perdido nuestra independencia, la cual está por encima de la política y la economía. Nuestro único motivo ha sido haceros partícipes de nuestro amor a la cultura y a las personas.

Quiero agradecer a todos los que han sido parte de Amal durante este tiempo, todas las personas que han pasado por el equipo de este festival durante estos años, a los directores, productores, actores,… los voluntarios, los técnicos, los colaboradores y patrocinadores, la familia Araguaney, a mi familia. Y sobre todo a ti por habernos ayudado a llegar tan lejos desde tu butaca.

10 years ago, this festival was born, fruit of the wish one family to bring their roots closer to a city which had become their home and where I was born. This is why, when I am sometimes asked by foreign press why this festival takes place in this small northern town, I answer that I suppose it is because it is done with love

Nobody forced us to do this festival 10 years ago, but it was our way of loving this city and those who form part of it. To give them something that no recession, no bank or budget cut can take away from this festival’s spectators: the wealth of being part of something bigger like culture, and, at the same time, to make them participants of the freedom and hope of the Arab world’s more than 300 million people.

The future is uncertain and maybe this recession will end up choking this festival, as it has done with so many stories and dreams these last few years. This is why, this year, I want us all to celebrate this tenth anniversary, and to remind us all that people are their experiences, memories, dreams and that nobody can take away these ten years in which we have all grown thanks to

me feel proud of being part of Amal, of telling the Arab world that we are a brave people and that each spectator from his seat can and will tear down the walls of fear and ignorance. To know that we have not lost our independence which is above politics and the economy, and that our only motive has been to make you a participant of our love of culture and people.

I want to thank all those who have participated in Amal during this time, all those who have been part of the festival team during these years, the directors, producers, actors…the volunteers, the technicians, the collaborators and sponsors, the Araguaney family, my family and, above all else, you, for helping us come this far from your theatre seat.

Hace 28 años nació la Fundación Araguaney-‐Puente de Culturas. Puente entre el Occidente en el que vivimos y el Oriente que desconocemos en sus esencias, problemas, valores... Hace 28 años comenzamos nuestro trabajo con la esperanza de aportar una visión que complete nuestra cultura personal y, por ello, hemos elegido el cine y la música como canales de comunicación, y como pilares para este puente de culturas. Cine de autor con historias reales, sin efectos especiales ni ficciones manipulantes. Producciones hechas por Occidentales y Orientales, socios profesional y culturalmente. AMAL es el nombre con el que nació este festival y que ahora cumple su X edición. Amal significa esperanza y la esperanza es el motor para la vida humana. Y también nació GHAZAL (que significa seducción), otra manifestación cultural, en este caso a través de la música.

Desde AMAL, GHAZAL y la Fundación Araguaney siempre hemos tratado de cruzar el puente, para conseguir unir los dos lados y convertirlos en una sola cultura, la universal, la de la convivencia y la tolerancia.

La cultura de los pueblos es la cultura de sus hombres y mujeres. Hombres como nuestro querido Óscar Refoxo, humanista, vitalista y amigo. Hombre de cultura gallega universal. A él quiero rendir homenaje en esta décima edición (2012) en nombre del Patronato de la Fundación Araguaney-‐Puente de Culturas y de todos los amigos del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe AMAL.

Twenty eight years ago the Araguaney-‐Bridge between Cultures Foundation was born. A bridge between the west, where we live, and the Orient, whose essence, problems, values… are unknown. Twenty eight years ago we started this endeavour with the hope of adding a vision that would complete our personal culture and, to do this, we chose film and music as communication channels, and as pillars for this bridge between cultures. Auteur films with real stories, with no special effects or manipulative storylines. Productions made by westerners and easterners, professional and cultural partners. AMAL is the name with which this festival was born and that now reaches its X edition. Amal means hope and hope is the motor of human life. And Ghazal (which means seduction), another cultural manifestation, was born, in this case through music.

From AMAL, GHAZAL and the Araguaney Foundation, we have always endeavoured to cross the bridge, to bring both sides together to become one culture, universal, that of coexistence and tolerance. The culture of a people is the culture of its men and women. Men like our beloved Oscar Refoxo, humanist, vital and a friend. A man with a universal Galician culture. I want to honour him in this tenth edition (2012), in the name of the Board of the Araguaney-‐Bridge between Cultures Foundation, and of all his friends at the International Euroarab Film Festival AMAL.

Amal es una palabra que signi!ca esperanza. Bajo ese nombre nació en 2003 el Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal, una cita singular organizada por la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas. Respaldada por un amplio público nacional e internacional, tiene como !nalidad aproximarnos a la realidad social y cultural árabe utilizando un idioma universal: el cine.

El Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal es un espacio libre y abierto que integra cine europeo y árabe, producido y coproducido, promoviendo la interculturalidad. En Amal, profesionales del séptimo arte y espectadores crean, comparten y revisan juntos puntos de vista diferentes sobre el mundo árabe y sus relaciones con el resto del mundo, particularmente Europa.

La décima edición de Amal exhibió entre el 14 y el 20 de Octubre de 2012 una selección heterogénea de 31 películas procedentes de 18 países diferentes, árabes y no árabes, bajo el lema “Diez años dando voz a quienes son enmudecidos”. En formato de cortometrajes y largometrajes independientes, nos hablaron de los países árabes, de su gente, sus costumbres y sus preocupaciones, resaltando el poder de la amistad, del sentido del humor y de las convicciones.

La !losofía de Amal va más allá de las salas de cine, y fueron muchas las actividades que se llevaron a cabo en Santiago de Compostela y en la red para emocionarnos y descubrirnos la riqueza del mundo árabe: semana gastronómica, talleres de danza y caligrafía, exposición de carteles, campaña informativa Amal Informa y exposición !latélica, ciclos de cine infantil y cine musical, concurso de cortos online Amal Express, concierto inaugural de H-Kayne… un abanico valioso de actividades originales e divulgativas que abordaron otras facetas de la cultura árabe.

Durante una semana, espectadores, directores, actores, productores, guionistas y periodistas de todo el mundo acudieron a Santiago de Compostela y al décimo aniversario del festival Amal. Más de siete mil personas de todas las edades y de distintas nacionalidades, a!cionados y profesionales, mostraron su apoyo a un evento que demuestra que el cine y el diálodo pueden ser herramientas valiosas para un entendimiento entre pueblos.

12INTRODUCCIÓN/ ¿QUÉ ES AMAL?

Amal is a word that means hope. Under this denomination, the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal was born in 2003, a unique event organized by the Araguaney-Bridge between Cultures Foundation. Backed by a large national and international following, it has as objective bringing us closer to social and cultural Arab reality, using a universal language: !lm.

The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal is a free and open forum, which integrates European and Arab !lm, produced and coproduced, promoting inter-cultural exchange. In Amal, !lm professionals and spectators create, share and examine different points of view regarding the Arab world and its relationships with the rest of the world, particularly Europe.

The X edition of Amal exhibited from October 14th to October 20th 2012, a varied selection of 31 !lms from 18 different Arab and non-Arab countries, under the title “Ten years giving a voice to those silenced”. Short and feature length independent !lms talked about Arab countries, their inhabitants, their customs and their problems, highlighting the power of friendship, humour and convictions.

Amal’s philosophy surpasses !lm venues, and a multitude of activities took place in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and online to engage us and discover the richness of the Arab world: gastronomic week, dance and calligraphy workshops, poster exhibition, Amal’s information campaign Amal Informs, a stamp exhibition, children’s !lm cycle and musical !lm cycle, online short !lm competition Amal Express, H-Kayne’s opening concert…a valuable group of original and educational activities featuring all aspects of Arab culture.

During one week, spectators, directors, actors, producers, scriptwriters and journalists from all over the world travelled to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and to the Amal Festival’s tenth anniversary. More than seven thousand people of all ages and nationalities, !lm buffs and professionals, showed their support for an event that proves that cinema and dialogue are precious instruments for understanding between cultures.

La !nalidad principal del Festival Amal es fomentar el diálogo con los pueblos árabes y europeos. Hoy en día, ofrece un conjunto de miradas complejas y multiformes sobre una realidad cambiante, y per-mite luchar contra estereotipos, tabúes, imágenes deformadas y parciales. Amal es además una vía de expresión privilegiada para los directores, ya que constituye un espacio libre en el que ellos puedan compartir directamente con el público, cada vez más curioso por conocer su tradición, sus costumbres y sus reivindicaciones. En este sentido, el valor social del festival, de un lado como del otro del mediterrá-neo, es incontestable.

Amal responde además a la necesidad imperiosa desde un punto de vista cultural por dar cabida en nuestras agendas a un cine de producción inde-pendiente, novedoso y conmovedor, prácticamente ausente en los circuitos comerciales de distribución. Así pues, Amal propone películas de gran calidad y que en su gran mayoría son inéditas en España. La selección o!cial de Amal difícilmente se podría ver en salas de cine convencionales, con que el festival constituye un escaparate único.

El Festival apuesta por la cooperación con entidades públicas y privadas, personas, hombres o mujeres, a!cionados o profesionales… En la familia Amal cabemos todas y todos. Es su esfuerzo por integrar ideas originales y nuevos colaboradores lo que le permite seguir impulsando la industria cinematográ-!ca, dinamizar el intercambio cultural y promover el desarrollo de proyectos euroárabes. Así, año tras año y con la ayuda de todos, el Festival se compro-mete a renovar su propuesta y a crecer a nivel local, nacional e internacional.

La labor de Amal es ardua pero merece la pena. Estrechando lazos con el mundo, no perdemos la esperanza de contribuir social y culturalmente a nuestra sociedad.

The main objective of the Amal Festival is to encourage dialogue between Arabs and Europeans. It currently offers a multitude of complex visions which take different forms and re"ect a changing reality, and it battles stereotypes, taboos, deformed and partial images. Amal is also a privileged place where directors can express themselves, as it constitutes a free space in which they can directly share with the public, increasingly curious about their traditions, customs and vindications. In this sense, the festival’s social value, on both sides of the Mediterranean, is uncontestable.

Amal also responds to the urgent need, from a cultural point of view, to include independent, innovative and moving !lms in our schedule, which are missing from the commercial distribution circuit. Amal includes high quality !lms, most of which have not been screened in Spain. The Amal official selection cannot be seen in conventional cinemas, so the festival is a unique window.

The festival encourages collaboration with public and private entities, people, men or women, !lm buffs or professionals. The Amal family has room for all. In its efforts to integrate original ideas and new collaborators, it encourages the !lm industry and cultural exchange, promoting the development of Euroarab projects. This way, year after year, and with the help of all, the festival renews its proposals and grows at a local, national and international level.

Amal’s work is not without difficulties, but it is worthwhile. Creating ties with the world, we encourage hope in contributing socially and culturally to our society.

El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal celebró este año su décima edición bajo el lema “Diez años dando voz a quienes son enmudecidos”. Durante diez años, cerca de trescientas películas (co)producidas por países árabes pasaron por Amal. Para muchas de ellas, Santiago de Compostela fue la ciudad en la que pudieron estrenarse ante un público nuevo, Europa, y abrirse camino hacia el resto del mundo.

El Festival Amal y Santiago de Compostela han acogido a lo largo de estos años varias generaciones de directores y directoras, como puede ser el caso de los Khlei!: Michel, el maestro del cine palestino, quien estaba presente en la primera edición de Amal en 2003 con Boda en Galilea, y Naël, su hijo, quien nos presentó diez años después su trabajo en “Waiting”, un corto documental sobre los inmigrantes afganos en Francia.

La décima edición de Amal ofreció al público una programación absolutamente única que nos mostró la llegada de la electricidad a Marruecos, la historia de la familia real Assad en Siria o el papel fundamental de las mujeres en las culturas musulmanas a través de 31 producciones, largometrajes y cortometrajes de género documental y de !cción. Películas que nos hablaron de los países árabes, de su gente, sus costumbres y sus preocupaciones, que resaltaron el poder de la amistad, del sentido del humor y de las convicciones en un mundo en el que tomar la palabra recobró su sentido original: el de transformar el cine en un acto y una reivindicación.

The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal celebrated its tenth edition this year under the motto “Ten years giving a voice to those silenced”. During this time, nearly three hundred !lms (co)produced by Arab countries were projected in Amal. For many of them, Santiago de Compostela was the city where they were premiered for a new public, Europe, opening a path to the rest of the world.

The Amal Festival and Santiago de Compostela have welcomed, during the last few years, different generations of directors, such as the Khlei!s: Michel, the Palestinian cinema Master, who was present in the !rst edition of Amal in 2003 with his !lm “Wedding in Galilee” and Naël, his son, who ten years later has presenting his work ”Waiting”, a documentary short about Afghan immigrants in France.

The tenth edition of Amal offered the public a completely unique programme which showed us the arrival of electricity to Morocco, the story of the Royal Assad Family in Syria or the role women have in Muslim cultures, thanks to 31 productions, feature length and short, documentaries and !ction. Films that talked about Arab countries, their inhabitants, their customs and their concerns, that extolled the power of friendship, sense of humour and convictions of a world in which speaking out loud, once again, has its original meaning: transforming !lm into an act and a vindication.

Las Actividades Paralelas fueron un espacio de encuentro entre profesionales y amantes de la cultura árabe. Tenían como objetivo abrir vías para la re"exión, la información y la diversión. Para su décima edición, el festival Amal contó con una amplia programación en Santiago de Compostela, en Galicia y en todo el mundo gracias también a actividades online. A través de todas esas propuestas, el público pudo disfrutar de ciclos de cine, cursos, conferencias, exposiciones y concursos.

The parallel activities were a meeting place for professionals and those who love Arab culture. They had the objective of opening paths to re"ect, inform and entertain. In our tenth edition of the Amal Festival, we proposed a varied offer in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, and also worldwide, thanks to our activities online. Along with these proposals, we continued to offer !lm cycles, courses, conferences, exhibitions and competitions.

La actuación del quinteto marroquí de hip hop H-Kayne tuvo lugar en la Sala Capitol de Santiago de Compostela el domingo 14 de octubre a las 22:00 h. Este concierto sirvió como pistoletazo de salida del X Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal.

Los más de 700 asistentes vibraron al ritmo de uno de los grupos más punteros del rap árabe. Con el más puro sonido groovy e in"uencias orientales, scratches contundentes, sus letras estuvieron a las antípodas del gangsta-rap y como Amal nos hablaron de esperanza.

Tras el concierto, los artistas disfrutaron de un momento con sus fans, haciéndose fotos con todos aquellos espectadores que se lo pidieron.

The Moroccan hip hop quintet H-Kayne performed at the Sala Capitol in Santiago de Compostela on Sunday October 14 at 22.00h. This concert marked the start of the X International Euroarab Film Festival Amal.

More than 700 people vibrated to the rhythm of one of the most popular Arab rap groups. With a pure groovy sound, oriental in"uences and strong scratches, their lyrics are the complete opposite of gangsta-rap and, like Amal, they talk of hope.

After the concert, the artists enjoyed a moment with their fans, taking photographs with all those who requested them.

Compartir cine y fomentar la comprensión del mundo árabe en las nuevas generaciones es uno de los compromisos del Festival Amal. Por cuarto año consecutivo, un ciclo de cine infantil destinado principalmente a jóvenes de 5º y 6º de primaria del área de Santiago de Compostela, contribuyo a que re"exionaran por ellos mismos sobre la actualidad internacional y sobre el valor del respeto hacia los demás.

Del 15 al 19 de octubre, niños y niñas estuvieron invitados a la proyección de dos cortometrajes euroárabes. Cada mañana y durante dos horas, Brais Fernandes Álvarez, dinamizador para público infantil, se encargó de animar de una manera divertida esta actividad y de compartir con los asistentes los contenidos de las películas. Dos obras maestras que agudizaron sus miradas como espectadores y favorecieron su sentido de la tolerancia: “Ostora, la leyenda” sobre la historia de la creación de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, y “Carta a Sasha”, sobre los campos de refugiados saharauis.

Sharing cinema and increasing the new generation’s understanding of the Arab world is one of the objectives of the Amal Festival. For a fourth year, a children’s !lm workshop destined for kids in the 5th and 6th primary school year from the Santiago de Compostela area, encouraged them to do their own thinking on international events and ponder the value of respect for others.

From the 15th to the 19th of October, boys and girls were invited to attend the projection of two short Euroarab !lms. For two hours each morning, Brais Fernandes Álvarez, was in charge of conducting in a fun way this activity and share with those assisting the contents of the !lms. Two masterpieces that increased their awareness as spectators and which will encourage tolerance: “Ostora, the legend” about the creation of the United Arab Emirates, and “Letter to Sasha”, about refugee camps in Sahara.

La música es una forma de expresión que tiene un origen ancestral en las culturas árabes, al igual que en Galicia. Es un lenguaje sensible y universal que al igual que el cine puede unir los pueblos de todo el mundo y llevarnos a establecer nuevas vías de comunicación y diálogo. Por eso, este año contamos con un programa que reunió cine y música.

El Ciclo Itinerante de Cine Amal Musical fue organizado por el Festival Amal en colaboración con el MACUF (A Coruña), el MARCO (Vigo), la Rede Museística de Lugo y el Centro Cultural Deputación de Ourense-Marcos Valcárcel, así como salas de música en vivo en toda Galicia (Xancara Jazz, el Contrabajo, el Garufa, El Jazz Filloa, el Bâbâ Bar y el Auriense).

Todo el mes de Octubre de 2012, el público ha podido asistir a proyecciones gratuitas de cine documental musical en los museos, y a conciertos en las salas colaboradoras. Para disfrutar del cine y de la música hecha en Galicia y en el mundo durante cuatro semanas seguidas.

Music is a form of expression which has an ancestral origin in Arab culture, as well as it does in its Galician counterpart. It is a sensitive and universal language which, like cinema, can unite people around the world and establish new ways of communication and dialogue. For this reason, this year we have organized an activity that united both !lm and music.

The itinerant cycle of Amal Music Films was organized by the Amal Festival in collaboration with MACUF (A Coruña), MARCO (Vigo), the Lugo Museum Network and the Cultural Ourense Deputation Centre Marcos Valcarcel, as well as venues for live music all over Galicia (Xancara Jazz, The Contrabajo, The Garuga, The Jazz Filloa, the Bâbâ Bar and The Auriense).

During the month of October 2012, the public was able to screen for free musical documentary productions in museums and listen to concerts at the collaborating venues; to enjoy !lm and music, made in Galicia and the world, during four consecutive weeks.

Durante la Semana O!cial Amal, el Hotel Eurostars Araguaney acogió algunos de los carteles favoritos que participaron en el segundo concurso de carteles. Todas las personas interesadas en los diseños más atractivos pudieron visitar la exposición gratuitamente y disfrutar del arte.En total, más de 20 creaciones que nos proporcionaron miradas heterogéneas e internacionales sobre Amal, un festival de cine que fomenta el conocimiento, el encuentro y la convivencia entre distintas culturas.

During the official Amal week, the Hotel Eurostars Araguaney showed a selection of favourites that had participated in the second Amal Poster Competition. All those interested in seeing the most attractive designs received, visited the exhibition for free to enjoy them. A total of 20 creations that provided different international views of Amal; a !lm festival which encourages knowledge and understanding between different cultures.

El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal convocó de nuevo el concurso de cor-tometrajes Amal Express, una actividad que contó con la colaboración de adnstream.com y con el apoyo de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela.

Amal Express es un concurso que consiste en la realización de un cortometraje en un tiempo “Express” de 96 horas y basado en una palabra clave proporcionada por la or-ganización del Festival Amal. Esta iniciativa pretende fomentar la creatividad y la inno-vación, además de promover la cultura en soportes digitales a través del cine.

La palabra clave sobre la que trataron los cortometrajes participantes se desveló el sábado 13 de Octubre de 2012 a las 12h00: “Corrupción”. Los participantes tuvieron has-ta el miércoles 17 de Octubre para subir su corto online en www.adnstream.com, dentro del canal de cortometrajes “amalexpress”, donde los internautas pudieron votar por su favorito y el jurado, compuesto por Coralie Yap-Chine (Coordinadora del Festival In-ternacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal 2012), Tim Redford (Director del Festival de cortos Curtocircuito), Rawan Moh Hilmi (Asesora en cultura árabe) y Alberto López Pasarín (Asesor en cine), visionar las 11 películas a concurso.

Este año, fue la película “El Juego de la cor-rupción”, de Ramón Herrera y Álvaro Menén-dez, la que se llevó el primer premio de 500 euros.

The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal once again called for entries for short !lm competition Amal Express, an activity in which both adnstream.com and the Uni-versity of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, collaborated.

Amal Express is a competition which con-sists of creating a short !lm in an express amount of time, 96 hours, based on a key term supplied by the Amal Festival organi-zation. This initiative encourages creativity and innovation as well as promotes culture on digital formats through the medium of !lm.

The key word on which short !lms needed to be based this year was revealed on Saturday October 13, 2012, at 12.00h: “Cor-ruption”. Participants had until Wednesday October 17, to upload their short online at www.adnstream.com, to short !lm channel “amalexpress” where web-surfers could vote for their favourite and the jury, formed by Coralie Yap-Chine (International Euroarab Film Festival Amal coordinator), Tim Redford (Director of short !lm festival Curtocircuito), Rawan Moh Hilmi (Arab culture consultant) and Albert Lopez Pasarin (!lm consultant), screened the 11 competing !lms.

This year, the !lm “Game of Corruption” (“Juego de Corrupción”), by Ramon Herrera and Alvaro Menendez was awarded the !rst prize which consisted of 500 Euros.

La décima edición del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal contó de nuevo con los Talleres Amal. El objetivo ha sido difundir distintas vertientes de la cultura árabe. Por ello, Amal organizó dos amenos cursos: un taller de danza oriental y un taller de caligrafía árabe.

El taller de danza tuvo lugar el sábado 13 de octubre de 11.00 a 13.00 en el Hotel Araguaney. Estuvo impartido por la profesora y bailarina de danza oriental Martha Franco, directora del CENTRO GAIRA en Santiago de Compostela, como taller de iniciación abierto a todas las personas mayores de edad.

El taller de caligrafía árabe tuvo lugar también el sábado 13 de Octubre de 16.00 a 19.00 horas. Estuvo impartido por el arqueólogo sirio y especialista en caligrafía árabe Ihab Al Oumaoui. Comprendió una parte teórica y otra práctica: corte del Qalam, preparación de las tintas y del papel, etc.

The X Edition of the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal once again celebrated the Amal Workshops. The objective was to promote different aspects of Arab culture. To do so, Amal organised two courses: an Oriental Dance Workshop and an Arab Calligraphy Workshop.

The Dance Workshop took place on Saturday October 13, from 11.00h to 13.00h at the Hotel Araguaney. It was taught by teacher and oriental dancer Martha Franco, director of the Gaira Centre in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and had an initiation level open to all over 18 years of age.

The Arab Calligraphy Workshop also took place on Saturday October 13 from 16.00h to 19.00h and was led by Syrian archaeologist and Arab calligraphy specialist Ihab Al Oumani. It included theory and practise: Qalam cut, preparing inks and paper among other topics.

Del 15 al 20 de Octubre de 2012, distintos locales de ocio y comercios del casco viejo de Santiago de Compostela acogieron un retrato de la actualidad en los países árabes durante los doce últimos meses. Integrándose en la vida diaria de los habitantes en forma de carteles informativos, esta actividad ofreció un recorrido por la vida socio-política, cultural y deportiva de algunos de los países que conforman el mundo árabe como Siria, Libia, Egipto o Palestina.

From October 15th to the 20th, different venues and shops in the old town of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, held exhibitions to portray the current situation of Arab countries during the 12 last months. The exhibition allowed all to immerse themselves in the daily lives of its people thanks to informative posters. This activity offered a timeline in the socio-political, cultural and sports realities of some of the countries that form part of the Arab world such as Syria, Libya, Egypt or Palestine.

Respondiendo a la convocatoria del Festival Amal 2012, fueron más de 700 los directores, productores y distribuidores que enviaron sus películas a nuestra sede, en Santiago de Compostela, por correo postal. Entregados dentro de sus sobres y sellos respectivos desde los rincones más lejanos del mundo, llegaron durante cuatro meses a nuestras o!cinas después de semanas y semanas de viaje por aires y carreteras.

La exposición Amal Filatélico 2012 ha sido el resultado del proceso de reciclaje de todo ese material. Comisariada por Coralie Yap-Chine, coordinadora del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal, y Julia Crespo, licenciada en Bellas Artes en la USC, la exposición fue organizada en colaboración con la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, y tuvo lugar del 11 de Octubre de 2012 al 22 de Octubre de 2012. Giró entorno a 8 países (Argelia, Marruecos, Túnez, Egipto, Líbano, Qatar, Bahréin e Iraq) e informó sobre los eventos más relevantes que marcaron la actualidad en diferentes países del mundo árabe, y sobre el legado histórico y artístico de ciertos países árabes al mundo.

More than 700 producers, directors and distributors responded to the Amal 2012 call for entries and sent their work to our headquarters in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, by mail. Their envelopes with their corresponding stamps from the far corners of the world arrived for months at our office after weeks and weeks of travel by air and land.

The Amal Stamp Exhibition 2012 was the result of our recycling efforts with all this material. The exhibition was commissioned by Coralie Yap-Chine, coordinator of the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal, and Julia Crespo, a USC Fine Arts graduate. It was organized in collaboration with the University of Santiago de Compostela and took place from October 11 until October 22, 2012. The Amal Stamp Exhibition included stamps from 8 countries (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Bahrain and Iraq) and other dozens of stamps which informed us about the most relevant events that have taken place in different countries of the Arab world and which also re"ected their historical and artistic legacy.

En el contexto del despertar que se viene produciendo en el mundo árabe desde !nales de 2010, Siria parecía en algún momento el siguiente escenario de cambio de régimen. Sin embargo, 18 meses después, y en mitad de una tragedia que ya ha costado más de 20.000 vidas, la situación no apunta a un desenlace inminente.

Así pues, el Festival Amal 2012 dedicó la mañana del 19 de Octubre a Siria. En esta ocasión, se proyectó “Syrie, le crépuscule des Assad”, un documental en el que los directores Christophe Ayad y Vincent de Cointet ilustran la historia y los entresijos del régimen Assad con imágenes de prensa y entrevistas a opositores. Después de la proyección, Jesús A. Núñez Villaverde, codirector del Instituto de Estudios sobre Con"ictos y Acción Humanitaria en Madrid y miembro del Jurado Amal 2012, ofreció una conferencia titulada “La tragedia siria, entre la realpolitik y el sueño democrático”. Para comprender mejor una de las revoluciones más complejas de la Primavera árabe, y uno de los con"ictos más violentos de la actualidad internacional.

In the context of the awakening which began at the end of 2010 in the Arab world, it looked like Syria would be the next scenario for a change of regime. Yet, 18 months later, and in the midst of a tragedy that has already claimed the lives of more than 20.000, the situation is no closer to resolution.

The Amal Festival dedicated the morning of October 19th to Syria. On this occasion, it projected “Syrie, le crepuscule des Assad”, a documentary in which directors Christophe Ayad and Vincent de Cointet illustrate the history and inner workings of Assad’s regime with the help of press footage and interviews to members of the opposition. After the screening, Jesús A. Núñéz Villaverde, co-director of the Institute for the Study of Con"ict and Humanitarian Action (Instituto de Estudios sobre Con"ictos y Acción Humanitaria) in Madrid and member of the Amal’s 2012 jury, offered a conference entitled “The Syrian Tragedy, Between Realpolitik and the Democratic Dream”. This was an opportunity to better understand one of the Arab Spring’s most complex revolutions, and one of the most violent international con"icts of the moment.

Un año más, la Semana Gastronómica regresó al Restaurante Caney coincidiendo con la celebración del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal. Desde el lunes 15 y hasta el domingo 21 de octubre, los amantes de la comida árabe tuvieron una cita ineludible con la mejor cocina tradicional de Oriente Medio en el Restaurante Caney.

Once again, the gastronomic week took place at the Caney Restaurant coinciding with the celebration of the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal. As of Monday 15th until Sunday the 21st of October, Arab food lovers had an unavoidable date with the best traditional Far Eastern cuisine at the Caney Restaurant.

Amal cumplió 10 años. 10 años durante los cuales prestigiosas personalidades procedentes de todo el mundo y vinculadas a la cultura árabe pisaron la alfombra roja del Festival para formar parte del Jurado Amal. Su responsabilidad: otorgar los premios en selección o!cial a las mejores producciones cinematográ!cas euroárabes actuales, a sus creadores y a sus protagonistas.

El Jurado estuvo integrado por reconocidos profesionales de diversos países vinculados al mundo árabe, al cine y a la cultura, destacando una vez más por su carácter intercultural e multidisciplinar. Ellos fueron los encargados de decidir los proyectos ganadores de la décima edición en las categorías Mejor largometraje de !cción, Mejor largometraje documental, Mejor cortometraje de !cción, Mejor cortometraje documental, Mejor director, Mejor actriz y Mejor actor.

El jurado prestó especial atención a la calidad cinematográ!ca de las producciones, así como a su capacidad por re"ejar historias actuales, suscitar el interés del público y aportar una mirada original.

Amal celebrated 10 years. 10 years in which prestigious personalities from all over the world and who belong to the Arab cultural world stepped on the festival’s red carpet to become part of the Amal Jury. Their responsibility: decide which current Euroarab !lm productions, creators and actors, are awarded in the official selection.

The Jury was integrated by recognized professionals from different countries who have a relationship with the Arab world, its cinema and its culture, highlighting once again its intercultural and multidiscipline character. The Jury decided which projects to award in the tenth edition in the categories Best Fiction Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Best Fiction Short Film, Best Documentary Short Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Actor.

The Jury paid special attention to cinematographic quality in the productions, as well as the capacity to re"ect current issues, provoke the public’s interest and contribute an original angle.

Sanâa Alaoui es una actriz francesa de origen marroquí. En 2007 recibió el Premio al primer papel femenino en el Festival Nacional de Cine Marroquí por su interpretación en “La Beauté éparpillée » de Lahcen Zinoun. Trabajó en la mayoría de las cadenas de televisión francesas en series televisivas, así como en una docena de largometrajes internacionales. En 2009 recibió el premio “Nuevo Talento” en el Medfilm Festival en honor a toda su carrera. Actualmente está promocionando la película “La Sirène Marocaine”, de Lars Jessen.

Sanâa Alaoui is a French actress of Moroccan origin. In 2007 she received the Best Newcomer Prize at the National Film Festival in Morocco for her interpretation in “La Beauté éparpillée” by Lahcen Zinoun. She has worked in many TV productions for French channels as well as in a dozen international films. In 2009 she received the New Talent Prize at the Medfilm Festival to honor her whole career. She is currently promoting film “La Sirène Marocaine” by Lars Jessen.

Economista y militar retirado, Jesús Núñez es Codirector del Instituto de Estudios sobre Conflictos y Acción Humanitaria y especialista en temas de seguridad, construcción de la paz y prevención de conflictos, con especial atención al mundo árabo-‐musulmán. Ejerce como profesor de la Universidad Pontificia Comillas y es vocal del Comité Español de la Agencia de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados Palestinos. Consultor del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo en el ámbito de la construcción de la paz y la prevención de conflictos violentos, también colabora con diferentes medios de comunicación.

Economist and ex-‐soldier, Jesus Nuñez is Coordinator of the Institute for the Study of Conflict and Humanitarian Action (Instituto de Estudios sobre Conflictos y Acción Humanitaria) and a specialist in security, peace processes and prevention of conflicts, specialized in the Arab-‐Muslim world. He is also a professor at the Ponticia Comillas University and vocal for the Spanish Committee of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees. Consultant for the United Nations Programme for Peace and the Prevention of Violent conflict, he also collaborates with different types of media.

Filólogo y guionista de formación, Alfonso Pato es el principal impulsor del conocido festival de cortos de Cans (O Porriño). Además, ha desarrollado su carrera como director del popular programa “ Onda Curta “ en la Gallega y en diversos medios de comunicación como los magazines de TVE-‐Gr “¡Que serán!” (1999) y “Boa tarde” (2000). Es colaborador en temas musicales, de cine y televisión en la edición gallega del diario “Él País” y fue nombrado vocal de la Asociación Gallega de Guionistas (AGAG) en 2011.

Philologist and scriptwriter, Alfonso Pato is the main force behind the well known Spanish Cans short film festival, celebrated in Porriño. He has also directed TV programmes “Onda Curta” for regional broadcaster TVG and for TVE-‐G (regional broadcast) programme “Qué Serán!” (1999) and “Boa Tarde” (2000). He is music, film & TV correspondent for El Pais newspaper’s Galician edition and has been named vocal for the Galician Scriptwriter’s Association (AGAG) in 2011.

Tahar Houchi se licenció en Letras y Lingüística francesa en la universidad de Argel, y completó sus estudios en Ginebra y en Lyon. También tiene una formación de periodista sobre el terreno, antes de especializarse en crítica cinematográfica. Es miembro de la Asociación suiza de periodistas especializados y de la Asociación suiza de periodistas cinematográficos. Después de haber trabajado para varios periódicos nacionales e internacionales y haber cubierto varios festivales como Cannes, Venecia, Dubai y Berlín, decide fundar y dirigir su propio Festival de Cine Oriental en Ginebra (FIFOG).

He has also received training as a field journalist, before specializing in film review. He is a member of the Swiss Association of Specialized Journalists and the Swiss Association of Film Journalists. After working for different national and international newspapers and covering numerous film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Dubai and Berlin, he has founded and directs his own Oriental Film in Geneva (FIFOG).

Khaled El HagarEs uno de los cineastas egipcios más controvertidos. Licenciado en Derecho por la Universidad de El Cairo, trabajó como asistente de dirección con Youssef Chahine en varias películas. Su película más reciente “El Shooq” (Lujuria) fue número uno en Egipto durante la semana anterior a la revolución y fue premiada con la Pirámide de Oro a la mejor película en el Festival Internacional de Cine de El Cairo. Sus películas han sido proyectadas en más de 150 festivales internacionales, incluyendo Cannes, Montreal, Nueva York y Rotterdam. La prensa inglesa lo ha descrito como la respuesta egipcia

Is one of the most controversial Egyptian film makers. A law graduate at Cairo University, he worked as an Assistant Director with Youssef Chahine in various films. His most recent film “El Shooq” (Lust) was box office leader the week prior to the revolution and has received the Gold Pyramid for Best Film at the Cairo International Film Festival. His films have been projected at more than 150 international festivals, and these include Cannes, Montreal, New York and Rotterdam. UK press have described him as “the Egyptian Pedro Almodovar”.


María MeraActriz y presentadora gallega. Estudió Turismo, Arte Dramático y Periodismo en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid. Después de su primer casting a los 16 años, entre sus últimos trabajos figuran Salomé, obra de teatro de Oscar Wilde realizada por el Centro Dramático Gallego, en la que fue protagonista; en televisión presentó el programa de niños Un Mundo de Nenos, y como actriz continúa protagonizando la quinta temporada de la serie gallega Matalobos.

Actress and Galician TV presenter, she studied Tourism, Drama and Journalism at the Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. After her first casting experience at the age of 16, her last 6 projects include Oscar Wilde’s Salome staged by the Galician Drama Centre, in which she was the lead; in TV she has recently presented children’s programme Un Mundo de Nenos and as an actress she continues in the fifth year of Galician production Matalobos.



El Trofeo Amal que recibieron todos los galardonados en la décima edición del Festival Amal fue un año más esculpido por el afamado artista Acisclo Manzano. Este escultor ourensano es miembro de la Academia Gallega de Bellas Artes y su larga trayectoria ha sido reconocida en numerosas ocasiones.

The Amal Trophy, received by all the winners in the tenth edition of the Amal Festival, was, once again, created by well known sculptor Acisclo Manzano. This artist from Orense is member of the Galician Fine Arts Academy and his work has been recognized on numerous occasions.

Una gran !esta de clausura celebrada el sábado 20 de octubre en el Teatro Principal puso punto y !nal a la décima edición del Festival Amal.

El presentador gallego Xosé Manuel Piñeiro fue el encargado de conducir una gala a la que asistieron personalidades del mundo de la cultura, del cine y de la política, además de un público numeroso. En el transcurso de la velada fueron desvelados los nombres de los ganadores en las distintas categorías o!ciales de esta décima edición. La Gala de clausura de Amal 2012 fue retransmitida en directo desde la página www.festivalamal.es. Esta retransmisión permitió que pudieran participar de esta celebración varios centenares de espectadores de todo el mundo, compartiendo con Amal un encuentro dedicado al diálogo entre culturas, la convivencia y la tolerancia.

Lejido (batería), José Manuel Díaz (bajo), Jesús Romero (cajón "amenco), Iria Peña (voz) y el propio Marcos Teira a la guitarra "amenca, recuperaron su disco de 2008 “Alí”, con canciones empapadas de in"uencias de ambos lados del estrecho, ante las cerca de 400 personas que prácticamente abarrotaron el Teatro Principal.

A ceremony was held on Saturday October 20th at the Teatro Principal in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, which brought to an end the tenth edition of the Amal Festival.

Galician presenter, Xose Manuel Piñeiro, was in charge of conducting a gala to which numerous cultural, !lm and political personalities as well as numerous other participants assisted. During the ceremony, the names of all the winners for the different categories for this tenth edition were revealed.

The closing ceremony for Amal 2012 was broadcast live at www.festivalamal.es. This live feed permitted hundreds from all over the world to follow the event, making Amal a meeting place for cultural and tolerant dialogue.

Those present had the opportunity to enjoy the performance of the Marcos Teira Quintet at the Teatro Principal in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The concert marked the end of the gala. The group formed by L.A.R. Lejido (Percussion), Jose Manuel Diaz (bass), Jesus Romero ("amenco percussion), Iria Peña (vocals) and Marcos Teira playing "amenco guitar, played tracks from 2008 record “Ali” full of in"uences from both sides of the straight in front of nearly 400 spectators that !lled the Teatro Principal.

Amal es, ante todo, un foro de re"exión y debate abierto donde intercambiar ideas, expresar opiniones y compartir experiencias. Por esta razón, los coloquios se han convertido en una pieza clave en el engranaje de un Festival que aboga por el diálogo, la colaboración y el entendimiento. Cineastas, actores y productores de todo el mundo viajaron a Santiago de Compostela entre el 14 y el 20 de Octubre, para participar en los coloquios organizados tras las proyecciones. Además, conexiones vía skype en directo desde el Teatro Principal permitieron que los espectadores pudieran conocer también a los directores que no habían podido desplazarse físicamente hasta Santiago de Compostela. Un total de más de diez invitados de diversas nacionalidades que conversaron animadamente con los espectadores, comentaron sus impresiones y respondieron a las dudas planteadas por el público.

Amal is, above all, a forum to re"ect, debate and exchange ideas, express opinions and share experiences. For this reason, the debates have become a key aspect for this festival that promotes dialogue, collaboration and understanding.

Filmmakers, actors and producers from all over the world travelled to Santiago de Compostela from October 14 to the 20th, to participate in the debates organized after the projections. And, thanks to a live connection with Skype at the Teatro Principal, spectators had a chance to meet directors who could not travel physically to Spain. A total of more than 10 guests of different nationalities talked with participants, commenting their impressions and answering questions from the public.

La décima edición de Amal contó con dos sedes principales:

Teatro Principal: cortometrajes, largometrajes de !cción, largometrajes documentales.

Hotel Araguaney: películas del Ciclo de Cine Infantil y del Ciclo Itinerante de Cine Amal Musical.

Además, por segundo año consecutivo, el Festival Amal estuvo presente en toda la comunidad gallega, ya que distintas entidades acogieron Ciclo Itinerante de Cine Amal Musical. Así, 4 documentales musicales euroárabes se proyectaron durante un mes en la C.C. y sala de exposiciones de la diputación de Ourense, en el MACUF (A Coruña), en el MARCO (Vigo) y en los distintos museos que forman parte de la Rede Museística de la Provincia de Lugo:

Los talleres de danza y caligrafía árabes completaron la programación en el Hotel Araguaney.

La exposición de !latelia árabe, la proyección de la película “Siria, el Crepúsculo de los Assad” y la conferencia correspondiente se llevaron a cabo en la Iglesia de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela.

El concierto de inauguración del banda de hip hop marroquí H-KAYNE se realizó en la Sala Capitol, y el de clausura a cargo de Marcos Teira Quinteto en el Teatro Principal.

The tenth edition of Amal took place at two different venues:

Teatro Principal: short !lms, feature length !ction and documentary !lms

Hotel Araguaney: Children’s Film Cycle and Itinerant Musical Film Cycle.

And, for a second year running, the Amal Festival was present in the whole of Galicia as different entities participated in Amal’s Itinerant Musical Film Cycle. 4 documentaries on Euroarab music were projected during the month at Orense’s Deputation Exhibition Gallery, at the MACUF Museum (Coruna), at the MARCO museum (Vigo) and in the different museums that form Lugo’s museum network.

The Arab dance and calligraphy workshops completed the programme at the Araguaney Hotel.

The Arab stamp exhibition, the projection of !lm “Syria, the twilight of the Assad” and its corresponding conference took place at the Santiago de Compostela University Church.

The opening concert by Moroccan hip hop group H-KAYNE took place at the Capitol, and the closing concert by Marcos Teira Quintet took place at the Teatro Principal.

El primer día de la semana o!cial del Festi-val (sábado 13 de Octubre) tuvieron lugar los talleres Amal, el Ciclo de Cine Itinerante Amal Musical y la exposición Amal Filatélico. El se-gundo día (domingo 14 de Octubre), se celebró el Concierto de Inauguración del Festival con la actuación de H-Kayne en la Sala Capitol.

Del lunes 15 al viernes 19 de Octubre, los espectadores pudieron disfrutar de seis pases diarios: a las 11h00 en el Ciclo Infantil, a las 13h00 en el Hotel Argauney con la sesión de documentales musicales, y en el Teatro Princi-pal a las 18h30 con cortometrajes, a las 20h00 con largometrajes documentales, a las 22h00 con largometrajes de !cción y a las 24h00 con la sesión golfa largometrajes documentales. También tuvieron lugar cada día las proyeccio-nes del Ciclo de Cine Itinerante Amal Musical en las distintas sedes colaboradoras en toda Galicia.

The !rst day of the official week of the Festival (Satur-day October 13th) registers the Amal Workshops, the Itinerant Arab Music Film Cycle and the Amal Stamp Exhibition. The second day (Sunday, October 14th) gathers data for the opening concert for the Festival performed by H-Kayne at the Capitol Hall.

From Monday the 15th to Friday the 19th of October, spectators had the opportunity to enjoy 6 daily projec-tions: at 11.00h the Children’s Film Cycle, at 13.00h, at the Hotel Araguaney, the morning session with mu-sical documentary !lms and, at the Teatro Principal, at 18.30h a short !lm session which was followed by documentary feature projections at 20.00h, a !ction feature !lm at 22.00h and a !nal session at 24.00h, which included documentary feature !lms. Different venues also projected on a daily basis Arab music documentaries all over Galicia.

En comparación con la pasada edición de Amal, se produce un notable incremento en la asisten-cia en las sesiones de largometrajes documen-tales (25% en 2012 frente a 17% en Amal 2010), a la vez que se equilibra el número de especta-dores en las distintas categorías.

Además, a pesar de la menor a"uencia en las sesiones de cortometrajes en comparación con las demás categorías, este año fue el cortomet-raje de !cción “Shérézade ou le délice casher”, de Agnès Caffin, la película que se llevó el Premio del Público. Es la primera vez en la historia del festival que un cortometraje se lleva el Premio Amal del Público.

Compared to the previous edition of Amal, there has been a signi!cant increase in assistnace to docu-mentary !lm sessions (25% in 2012 compared to 17% in Amal 2010), as well as a tendency to level the number of spectators in the different categories.

It should also be noted that although there were less spectators for the short !lm category compared to the other sessions, this year a !ction short !lm “Shérézade ou le délice casher”, by Agnès Caffin, won the People’s Choice Award. This is the !rst time in the history of a festival that a short !lm wins this Amal award.

La gran presencia de películas dirigidas por directoras y que aborden la situación de las mujeres en el mundo árabe son hechos que sin duda suscitan un interés particular de este género por la programación del Festival Amal. Así pues, las espectadoras del Festival Amal representan casi un 59% de la asistencia, frente a un 41% de varones. Además, se observa una mayoría de especta-doras en todas las categorías.

The presence of !lms directed by women that discussed the situation of women in the Arab world is an issue that possibly increased the interest of this genre in the Amal Film Festival programme. Women represent nearly 59% of the total of spectators as opposed to a 41% of males.

Se observa un crecimiento de la actividad en los días previos al Festival, coincidiendo con las acciones publicitarias y de comunicación más importantes. Además, sube el número de visionados durante los días de proyecciones, llegando los accesos a multiplicarse por más de diez, especialmente al principio de la Semana O!cial del Festival, y alcanzando un total de 7520 visitas.

Finalmente, si se compara con las cifras de la pasada edición en las mismas fechas, se aprecia que el número de visitas a la página web del Festival se ha mantenido estable, incrementándose sin embargo en más de un 15% en dos años.

The chart shows online activity for the official festival webpage www.festivalamal.es. It represents visits between October 8th and the 2nd, 2012. An increase in activity can be observed the days preceding the festival, coinciding with important publicity and communication actions. The number of visits during the Festival clearly increases, multiplying by ten the initial numbers, especially at the beginning of the official festival week where it reaches a total of 7520 visits.

Finally, when compared to numbers from the same dates of the previous edition, a tendency to stabilize can be observed, although there is an increase of more than 15% over the last two years.

En Amal 2012 hubo varios tipos de entradas. Los largometrajes de !cción y documentales contaron con una entrada de 2 euros y los cortometrajes de !cción y documental con una entrada de 1 euro por sesión. La entrada a los cortometrajes infantiles y experimentales fue gratuita. Además, estuvo a disposición de los espectadores un bono especial a un coste de 15 euros con el que se permitió el acceso a 10 sesiones. En este grá!co, se recoge el número de entradas individuales y por bono vendidas.

Febrero-Junio Las Lunas de Amal tuvieron lugar en Febrero, Marzo, Abril, Mayo y Junio de 2012. 7 y 30 de Noviembre de 2011. Las Jornadas “El Mediterráneo: un mar de dudas y esperanzas” fueron organizadas por La Casa Encendida y el Instituto de Estudios sobre Con"ictos y Acción Humanitaria (IECAH) en colaboración con el festival Amal en Madrid. El 7 de noviembre se proyectó el largometraje documental “Basta de miedo”, de Mourad Ben Cheikh. El día 30 la proyección de la película “Esta es mi tierra, Hebrón” fue seguida de una mesa redonda “¿Algo nuevo en Palestina?”, en la que intervinieron Jesús A. Nuñez Villaverde, codirector del IECAH, y Teresa Aranguren, Consejera del Consejo de Administración de la Corporación RTVE. 7th and 30th of November, 2011The course “The Mediterranean: A sea of doubts and hopes” was organised by the Casa Encendida organization and the Institute for the Study of Con"icts and Humanitar-ian Action (IECAH) in collaboration with the Amal Festival in Madrid. 23 de Noviembre de 2011 El tema central del encuentro con el alumnado del colegio A Nosa Señora de Lourdes la tarde del 23 fue el velo islámico. Después de la proyección del cortometraje de Xavi Sala “Hiyab”, Rawan Moh Hillmi, asesora en cultura árabe de la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas, se encargó de explicar lo que representa el velo para las mujeres musulmanas.

November 23rd, The central issue of this lecture with students at A Nosa Señora de Lourdes school on the afternoon of the 23rd was the Islamic veil. After the projection of Xavi Sala’s short !lm “Hiyab”, Rawan Moh Hillmi, the Araguaney – Bridge between Cultures Foundation’s cultural consultant explained what the veil represents to Muslim women.

24 al 26 de Noviembre de 2011 El Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Gas Natural Fenosa inició el pasado 24 de noviembre una Muestra Amal ofreciendo largomentrajes exhibidos durante las últimas ediciones del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal. La programación incluyó diez largometrajes, cinco películas de !cción y cinco documentales, de origen o temática árabe a lo largo de tres jornadas consecutivas como “LA SAL DE ESTE MAR”, “LA CASA AMARILLA” o “LOS CONDENADOS DEL MAR”. November 24th to the 26th, 2011 The Contemporary Art Museum Gas Natural Fenosa started last November 24, an Amal Showcase offering feature !lms exhibited in the last editions of the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal. The programme included ten feature !lms, !ve !ction productions and !ve documentaries, of Arab origin or featuring an Arab theme, which were projected on three consecutive days. Films such as “The Salt of the Sea”, “The Yellow House” or “Damned of the Sea” were projected.

MUESTRA AMAL “CINE Y PERIODISMO EUROÁRABES”AMAL SHOWCASE “FILM AND EUROARAB JOURNALISM”

Del 26 de enero al 14 de junio, la Federación de Asociaciones de Periodistas de España, la Asociación de Periodistas y Escritores Árabes en España y el Festival Amal colaboraron con Amal en una muestra titulada “Cine y periodismo euroárabes”. El ciclo, que ha reunido un total de siete películas documentales, se proyectó del 26 de enero al 14 de junio, a razón de un jueves al mes, en el auditorio del Centro Internacional de Prensa de Madrid (calle María de Molina, 50; 2ª planta). El festival Amal llevó así muestras documentales de cinco países del Magreb y Oriente Próximo: Túnez, Marruecos, Egipto, Palestina e Irak, tratando los procesos revolucionarios conocidos como Primavera árabe, el con"icto palestino israelí, la realidad de la población emigrante, las desigualdades y la muerte de periodistas en Irak. Cada una de las proyecciones fue precedida de una conferencia dedicada a analizar la historia reciente del país protagonista del cartel. Responsables políticos, expertos en información internacional y mundo árabe y periodistas de las dos orillas acercaron así la actualidad de estos países.

From January 26th to June 14th, the Spanish Federation of Arab Journalist Associations and the Association of Arab Journalists and Writers in Spain collaborated with the Amal Festival in a showcase entitled “Euroarab Film and Journalism”. The cycle put together a total of seven documentary feature !lms which were projected from January 26th to June 14th, one Thursday a month, in the auditorium at the Madrid International Press Centre (Maria de Molina, 50, 2nd "oor). The Amal Festival presented documentaries from !ve different countries in the Maghreb and Middle East: Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine and Iraq, centered on the revolutionary processes known as the Arab Spring, the Palestinian-Israeli con"ict, the reality of emigration, inequality and the death of journalists in Iraq. Each of the projections was introduced by a conference which analyzed the recent history of the country featured in the documentary. Responsible politicians, experts in international information and the Arab world and journalists from both sides of the Mediterranean brought the reality of these countries closer.

11-25 de Febrero de 2012 El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal organizó a principios de 2012 una muestra de cortometrajes euroárabes para niños en colaboración con el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Gas Natural Fenosa de A Coruña. Tuvo lugar los sábados 11, 18 y 25 de Febrero, todas ellas a las 17,30 horas de la tarde y la entrada fue gratuita. La programación de estas muestras incluía la proyección de 9 cortometrajes de diversa procedencia (Bélgica, Argelia, Palestina, Jordania, Reino Unido, Siria, Catar y España) y doblados al castellano, y cuya temática giraba en torno al mundo árabe. Son cortos de entre 3 y 30 minutos de duración doblados al castellano. Rawan Moh Hilmi, asesora en cultura árabe de la Fundación Araguaney-Puente de Culturas, estuvo presente en las sesiones para presentar las películas y responder a las preguntas de los niños y de las niñas.

February 11th to 25th, 2012 The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal organized at the begin-ning of 2012, a showcase of Euroarab shorts for children in collaboration with the Museum of Contem-porary Art Gas Natural Fenosa in La Coruna. It took place on Saturdays 11th, 18th and 25th of February at 17.30h and entrance was free. The programme for these showcases included the projection of 9 short !lms from different countries (Belgium, Algeria, Palestine, Jordan, United Kingdom, Syria, Qatar and Spain) dubbed into Spanish and themed on the Arab world. The short !lms had a length of 3 to 30 min-utes. Rawan Moh Hilmi, Arab culture consultant to the Araguaney – Bridge between Cultures Foundation, was present at the sessions to present the !lms and respond to questions asked by the children.

Los días 4, 6, 8, 11 y 13 de Marzo, la Universidad An-Najah de Nablus, Palestina, exhibió para sus estudiantes películas de la novena edición del Festival Amal. 3 cortos y 2 largos documentales integraron el cartel de esta muestra de cine euroárabe que llegó a Palestina gracias al Festival Internacional de Cine Amal. Los objetivos de esta iniciativa fueron ofrecer momentos de ocio a la población de allí, puesto que son zonas en las que los jóvenes tienen pocas posibilidades de ir al cine, así como intentar que chicos y chicas en edad de formarse conozcan lo que pasa en el resto de países árabes. 2012 On the 4th, 6th, 8th, 11th and 13th of March, the An-Najah University in Nablus, Palestine, exhibited !lms from the IX Amal to its students. 3 short !lms and 2 documentary features constituted the programme of this Euroarab !lm showcase that takes place in Palestine thanks to the International Euro-arab Film Festival Amal. The objective of this initiative is to offer the population of this area entertainment as its young adults have few possibilities of going to the cinema. It also helps students and informs them of events in the rest of the Arab world.

19-23 de Marzo de 2012 El programa incluyó !lms de las tres últimas ediciones del Festival Amal centrados en el Magreb, las mujeres, la inmigración, así como películas dirigidas a un público infantil. La entrada a todas ellas fue gratuita. Se proyectaron una recopilación de películas del Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal, ya exhibidas en las tres últimas ediciones. El Museo Provincial de Lugo dedicó la semana del 19 al 23 de Marzo a exhibir películas centradas en el Magreb; el Museo Pazo de Tor mostró cine sobre mujeres; la inmigración fue el tema principal de las películas proyectadas en el museo Fortaleza San Paio de Narla y el Museo Provincial do Mar ofreció cine para niños. La entrada a las proyecciones fue gratuita y la muestra un total éxito.

Entrance was free of charge. The selected !lms had previously featured in the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal’s last three editions. The Provincial Museum in Lugo dedicated the week from March 19th to the 23rd to exhibit-ing !lms featuring the Maghreb; the Pazo Tor Museum screened !lms about women; immigration was the main theme for !lms projected at the Fort Museum San Paio in Narla and the Provincial Museum of the Sea offered !lms for children. Entrance was free of charge and the showcase was an enormous success.

XII SEMANA CULTURAL QUE ORGANIZA EL IES PONTECESOXII CULTURAL WEEK AT IES PONTECESO

10-13 de Abril de 2012 El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal participó en Abril en la XII Semana Cultural organizada por el IES Ponteceso. Se trató de una semana centrada en la cultura, donde tuvieron cabida el cine, la literatura, la danza, la música, los idiomas… y donde el Festival Amal acercó el cine euroárabe a estudiantes de entre 11 y 16 años. Se proyectaron 10 producciones a lo largo de los días 10, 11, 12 y 13 de Abril. En la sesión para niños de 11 a 13 años se exhibieron los cortometrajes “Warda”, “Hudud” y “Mi humilde historia”. “Mudo”, “Hiyab” y “Garagouz” fueron los tres cortos que se mostrarán para niños entre 12 y 14 años; los jóvenes de 14 a 15 años pudieron ver los cortometrajes “Khalid”, “El vendedor de pañuelos” y “Prohibido el paso”. En la sesión para adolescentes de 16 años en adelante se mostró el documental “Shooting Muhammed”, una película en la que vieron el día a día de un estudiante palestino en una universidad israelí. Para completar las proyecciones, Sami Ashour, asesor en cultura árabe árabe del Festival Amal, acudió a las sesiones del miércoles y del viernes para mantener una charla con los estudiantes del instituto.

April 10th to 13th, 2012. The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal participated during the month of April in the XII Cultural Week organised by the IES Ponteceso. A week centred on culture, where there was room for !lm, literature, dance, music and languages…and where the Amal Festival brough Euroarab !lm closer to students from ages 11 to 16. 10 productions were screened during the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th of April. The session for those aged 11 to 13 included short !lms “Warda”, “Hudud” and “My Simple Story“. “Mute”, “Hiyab” and “Garagouz” were the three short !lms selected for those aged 12 to 14; youngsters of 14 to 15 were shown short !lms “Khalid”, “The Handkerchief Seller” and “No Way Through“. Those aged 16 and onwards were shown documentary !lm “Shooting Muhammed”, a production where students could follow the daily life of a Palestinian student in an Israeli university. To complete the experi-ence, Sami Ashour, Arab cultural consultant for the Amal Festival, was present at the Wednesday and Friday sessions to talk to those present at the secondary school.

Or-ganizada por Mujeres por la paz y Acción solidaria con Palestina, esta muestra permitió que se exhibieran 4 producciones de temática árabe. May 31st, 2012. The International Euroarab Film Festival Amal collaborated with the 1st Palestinian Film Showcase that took place every Thursday of the month of May in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Organised by Women for Peace and Solidarity Action with Palestine, this showcase screened 4 Arab productions.

El Festival Amal colaboró en una muestra de cine palestino organizada por el Cine Club Carballiño dentro de las jornadas Xociviga (Xornadas de Cine e Vídeo en Galicia) y lo hizo con una serie de cortos de temática euroárabe, cuyo eje principal fue Palestina. La Muestra se desarrolló en el Auditorio Municipal de Carballiño con las películas “Mudo”, “Prohibido el paso”, “El sabor de la revolución”, “Cartas a Palestina”, “Gaza Londres” y “Lesh Sabreen”. June 1st, 2012 . The Amal Festival collaborated with a Palestinian Film Showcase organised by Film Club Carballiño included in the XOCIVIGA (Galician Film and Video Showcase) and did so with a series of Arab short !lms centered on Palestine. The showcase took place at Carballiño’s auditorium and featured !lms “Mute”, “No Way Through“, “The Taste of Revolution”, “Letters to Palestine”, “Gaza London” and “Lesh Sabreen”.

3ERA MUESTRA AMAL EN ARGENTINA3RD AMAL SHOWCASE IN ARGENTINA 25 Junio – 03 Julio 2012 .La Asociación CINE FÉRTIL organizó en colaboración con el Festival Internacional de Cine EuroÁrabe Amal la 3ERA MUESTRA INTERNACIONAL DE CINE EUROÁRARE AMAL EN ARGENTINA, del 25 de Junio al 03 de Julio en la Ciudad de Córdoba. Esta muestra contó con la Declaración de Interés y Auspicio de la Secretaría de Cultura de la Presidencia de la Nación, la Declaración de Interés Cultural de la Legislatura de la Provincia de Córdoba y de la Honorable Cámara de Diputados de la Nación y parte importante de su éxito fue fruto de la coordinación general de Beatriz Halak (Diputada Nacional MC) en la provincia de Córdoba. La respuesta de la audiencia cordobesa fue unánime. El público respondió a la gran mayoría de las proyecciones y los eventos paralelos producidos especialmente por Cine Fértil en Argentina. Más de 1348 personas visitaron las salas durante ocho jorna-das de actividades programadas en la muestra. June 25th to July 3rd, 2012 .The Association FERTILE CINEMA organised in collaboration with the International Euroarab Film Festival Amal, the 3rd Amal Argentinean International Euroarab Film Showcase from June 25th to July 3rd in the city of Cordoba. This showcase was declared of International Interest by the Secretariat for Culture of the Nation’s Presidency, Declared of Cultural Interest by the Legislators of the Province of Cordoba and the Honourable Chamber of Members of Parliament of the Nation. This success was the fruit of efforts by general coordinator Beatriz Halak, a member of parliament for the province of Cordoba. The response from the public in Cordoba was unanimous. Spectators packed all projections and parallel events which were specially produced by the Fertile Cinema Association in Argentina. More than 1.348 people visited the theatres during the eight days the activities took place.

El Festival Amal colaboró nuevamente con el Cine Club Carballiño dentro de las jornadas Xociviga (Xornadas de Cine e Vídeo en Galicia) con el documental “Esta es mi tierra Hebrón” en la Casa da Cultura de Carballiño. Alrededor de 50 personas acudieron a la proyección. ugust 3rd, 2012. The Amal Festival, once again, collaborated with the Carballino Film Club for the XOCIVIGA symposium (Galician Film and Video Showcase) with documentary “This is my Land Hebron” at the Carballiño Cultural Centre. Nearly 50 people screened the production.

MUESTRA DE CINE ÁRABE EN PALESTINAARAB FILM SHOWCASE IN PALESTINE Los días 7, 10, 12, 14, 16 y 19 de Agosto de 2012, el Centro Al-Rowwad exhibió películas de la novena edición del Festival Amal en el campo de refugiados de Aida, cerca de Belén en Palestina. 4 corto-metrajes y 2 largometrajes formaron parte del cartel de esta segunda muestra de cine euroárabe en Pal-estina del año y que llegó gracias al Festival Internacional de Cine Amal al Centro Al-Rowwad, un espacio de formación artística independiente que pretende ofrecer un entorno seguro para fomentar la creatividad de los niños, y ayudarlos a descargar la tensión que acumulan al vivir en un estado de guerra. On the 7th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th and 19th of August 2012, the Al-Rowwad Centre exhibited !lms from Amal’s ninth edition in refugee camp Aida, near Bethlehem, in Palestine. 4 short !lms and 2 feature !lms were part of the programme at this year’s 2nd Euroarab Film Showcase in Palestine, which reached the Al-Rowwar Centre thanks to the International Euroarab Film festival Amal. The Al-Rowwad is a space for independent artistic education which has the objective of offering a safe space to encourage creativity in children, helping them to rid themselves of the tension they accumulate due to war.

MUESTRA AMAL EN EL CGAI, A CORUÑAAMAL SHOWCASE AT THE CGAI, IN CORUNA 02-09 de Noviembre de 2012 El Festival Internacional de Cine Euroárabe Amal organizó en co-laboración con el Centro Galego de Artes da Imaxe (CGAI) una muestra extensa con parte de la selección o!cial de la décima edición del festival. En esa ocasión, el público coruñés pudo ver dos largometrajes documentales, un largometraje de !cción, dos mediometrajes y cuatros cortometrajes producidos entre 2010 y 2012, películas entre las cuales se encontraban algunas de las premiadas en la última edición como “Rabat”.

On this occasion, the public from Coruna had the chance to see two documentary feature !lms, a !ction feature !lm, two medium length productions and four short !lms, produced from 2012 to 2012, and which included titles awarded at the last edition of the Festival among which was “Rabat”.
