Ivarssons I Metsj has been in business from the beginningProduction of tipping trailers started already in the 50s when combines with grain tanks started to be common.
Ivarssons i Metsj has always focused on rational transportation. In the beginning of the 80s the production of hook-
lift trailers started. Originally when it comes to roll-on/roll-off technique, its an old French patent for trucks that was
invented for handling war equipment. Development of roll-on/roll-off when it comes to tractor-drawn trailers have been
successful since there are significant advantages over trucks.
Increasing demands for road safety when it comes to brakes and lighting gives maintenance benefits to the hook lift
trailer, because there is only one trailer chassis to maintain when it comes to brakes, tyres and lighting and other equip-
ments, though the trailer is capable of handling several different types of containers and platform bodies.When we talk about a conventional trailer there is a need of several complete carriages to be able to carry out sand
and gravel moving jobs, grain handling and other transport objects with special needs.
The attention about soil compaction led to further development of the trailer chassis such as axle steering, but also the
choice of wheel equipment makes a big difference when it comes to gentle ground impact.
Wheel equipment is always an important issue for trailers, but wider tyres also give an increased contact area which
leads to less impact of the ground. Economical demands of course, make durability and reliability a key issues for trai-
lers when the hectic season is at its peak.
Metsjs valuations about a good hook lift trailerThe platform height for a hook lift trailer must not be higher as it is on a conventional trailer with the same wheel equip-
ment. A hook lift trailer must be able to tip with the same tipping angle, force and most important of all, the same
speed as a conventional trailer.The hook lift trailer should have the possibility to have the rear axle as close to the lifting frame of the container as
possible when lifting of heavy loads should take place. The laws of nature of course has influence on the trailer during
container shifting, and when a large number of heavy liftings should be done, the wheel diameter must not be too big
in relation to this. Here the MetaQ (container quick shifting system) can be an alternative.
In this occasion the wheel diameter is not an issue, since there is no dealing with lifting loads from the ground.
It is possible to reach a higher payload since the unladen weight of the trailer is lower per loaded ton.
Ivarssons i Metsj has developed their trailer programme in a rational co-ordination between hook lift trailers and con-
ventional trailers.
Its important to evaluate what kind of transportations that are to be done. This is to make it possible for you to make
the correct decision, whether it is a conventional, hook lift or a MetaQ trailer that is the right choice. The MetaQ uses a
quick shifting system for shifting platforms and containers.
How valuable is it to be able to put the container on the ground?
How important and how present is the co-ordination with trucks that use the same hook lift system?
You have to take into consideration that trucks often has lower handling capacity versus a tractor drawn trailers. An
other issue is that the personal requirement for a tractor versus truck is different. It could be easier to recruit personal
for the transportation that need to be done with tractor and trailer.
The hook lift trailer has a higher unladen weight due to the design and the technique coming with it, that are mounted
on the hook lift trailer in comparison with a conventional trailer. This results in a lower payload.

Hook lift trailer structure at MetsjMetaFlex 11 and MetaFlex 14 are built with basic components from the trailers MetaMid and MetaX built by Ivarssons i
Metsj. The axle structure is a pendulum bogie. Container shifting and tipping hydraulics is mounted at the front of the
trailer. Tipping and container shifting is done by the same hydraulic cylinder.
MetaFlex 18, MetaFlex 24 and 24 Q, have their basic components in common with the Meta Q.
The axle structure and axle pendulum is built around a system of communicating vessels. A separate hydraulic cylin-
der is used for tipping. The container can be pushed fore and aft on the hook lift frame. An option for the trailer is the
Multi-drawbar from Metsj. Container structures acc. to Truck standard SIS 3021. But of course, many choose contai-
ners and platforms from Metsj.

MetaFlex 11MetaFlex 11 is a MetaMid with hook lift armBasic components such as pendulum bogie and wheel
equipment alternatives are the same for these trailers.
This also makes the Metsj different containers a natural
choice.
One double acting hydraulic function is used for tippingand container shifting. Tipping is done by a double acting
telescopic to get the best possible tipping characteristics.
The Metsj tipping and shifting cylinder uses telescopic
stages to get a compact cylinder assembly. With front
mounted hydraulic on the trailer, its important that the
shifting cylinder have compact measures. The telescopic
stages give you a fast and increasing tipping angle.
Altering between tipping and shifting container is done at
the l.h front frame leg. (as option, control from the driver
seat, Item no. 10926)
The hook on the hook lift trailer is hinged to get a
smoother shifting without bounces. The hook lift tower
has a sight hole strategically placed to make it possible to
see the hook when docking with the container. Locking
of the container acc. to SIS 3021 is a locking claw wel-
ded on to the tipping frame. The container rear angle iron
moves in under the claw when pulling the container up on
the frame with the hook tower, this is done automatically.MetaFlex 11 is capable of handling containers acc. SIS
3021 with lengths from 4165 to 4500 mm. Containers
longer than 4165 mm affects the trailer characteristics
with an increased rear hangout / dipping of the rear when
tipping. It also decreases the drawbar load on the tractor.
MetaFlex 11 has a pendulum bogie with a load-bearing
capacity of 11 tons.
As an option, MetaFlex 11 has bogie lifting working alter-
natively on axle 1 or 2, which may be used when driving
at lower speeds. Item no.:10706.

As standard, MetaFlex 11 uses one double-acting
outlet from the tractor for tipping and shifting. But,
with a lot of optional equipment mounted on the
trailer, e.g. bogie lifting and hydraulic connections on
the hook tower etc. Choosing electro hydraulic sys-
tem for the trailer will minimize the number of hoses,
which makes the work with the trailer a lot easier.

MetaFlex 14MetaFlex 14, a MetaX with hook lift frameBasic components are the same for these trailers such
as pendulum bogie and wheel equipment. Though, pay
attention to that wheel alternative with bigger wheel dia-
meter has a negative influence on container shifting cha-
racteristics.Recommended length for trailer superstructure is the
same as for MetaX, 5050 mm. Although, the MetaFlex 14
is capable of handling platforms from 4500 to 6000 mm.

The Metsj tipping and shifting cylinder uses telescopic

Shifting containers are done by telescoping the trailerchassis and hook lift frame.
The telescopic lock is hydraulically activated. Adjustment
of chassis length (telescoping) is done by locking the bra-
kes and then driving the tractor forward or backwards.
Telescoping operate is done from the driver seat.
The trailer is equipped with 2 12 volts check valves moun-
ted into the trailer brake circuit.
For telescoping, the trailer brakes are applied and then
electric power is turned on for the check valves. In this
way you seal of the oil in the trailer brake system and at
the same time the frame lock is released.
Release the force from the brake pedal and the trailer
brake is on, with the frame lock released. Now the length
of the chassis, and at the same time, the hook lift frame
can be altered. The frame lock is spring loaded and there-
fore finds its fixed position.Altering between tipping and shifting container is done
automatically when telescoping the trailer frame. MetaFlex
14 is capable of handling containers acc. to SIS 3021
with lengths from 4500 to 6000 mm.
Telescoping gives the possibility to choose between three
different platform lengths, standard is 4500 mm and the
other are 5050 mm and 6000 mm. The telescoping chas-
sis makes the chassis short and easy manoeuvrable and
gives driving characteristics that correspond with the
length of the container.
The hook lift tower has a sight hole strategically placed to

There is a wide variety of wheel equipment. When choo-
sing wheel equipment, consideration about what kind of
work the trailer is going to perform and in what kind of
ground conditions the trailer is going to be used. What
kind of wheels that are chosen, considerably affects the
driving characteristics. Have in mind that large wheel dia-meter has a negative impact on container shifting charac-
teristics. The wheels can be equipped with half guard
splash shields (option). The bogie pendulum has positive
lubrication with replaceable bushings, centred on a mas-
sive grinded shaft. Wheel axle design and structure the
same as 100 km/h high speed axles. Wheel hub lubrica-
tion interval is 50000 km, or every second year. The hub
has no greasing nipple due to the extended lubrication
interval and the risk of overfilling grease with overheating
as a result.
Calculated axle bearing life time is app. one turn around
the globe. The inner ring is able to rotate due to tole-rance. This is a great advantage since the big spot load
from the wheel does not affect the same spot on the bea-
ring, which increase bearing lifetime considerably.
Double hub seal with backup rings that stops the grease
from leaving the bearing. Axle design is tested and appro-
ved acc. to norm TE 4050, which guarantee an extended
lifetime.
Braking efficiency acc. to. vvfs 2003:6 and the axles areequipped with adjustable brake actuating levers. NOTE!
Self adjusting brakes is standard on MetaX. There is a
mechanical seal between the brake shield and the drum.
Forged support bearing for actuating shaft with bushing
and grease nipple. Brake shoes are lathed and adap-
ted from factory which in reality means they are worn in
already. Its very important not to handle the trailer without
wheels directly on the brake drums since that easily leads
to uneven brake power. Axles can be prepared for ABS
anti locking system, which also may be used for distance
calculation. Axle treatment from manufacturer acc. to.
KTL painting.

optional, Item no.: 10706. The use of bogie lifting system alter driving characteristics for the trailer. Bogie lifting system
decrease wear of tyres and is also gentle to the ground. When you push down the rear axle the drawbar load on the
tractor will increase. This is most useful when shifting container and the tractor has a tendency to loose weight at
the back. On the other hand, when you lift the rear axel up, the turning point of the trailer gets closer to the tractor and
gives better manoeuvrability. This is very useful when you handle containers in narrow areas. Use of bogie lifting system
with payload must follow regulations regarding driving speed and maximum axle load. The system suitable to use at
low payloads and driving speeds.
Shown are two different makes of brake actuating levers,
where the l.h. lever is solid and not adjustable. Metsj
has decided to use adjustable brake levers on all their
braking axles. On 8 and 10 bolt axles (MetaX and up-
wards) self adjusting brake levers are standard.
Self adjustment makes the braking system just as sharp
after long time use when it comes to synchronization.
The synchronization between the towing vehicle andtrailer is essential. The tractor must never start to brake
before the trailer. If this happens, the tractor has to take
the complete load which may lead to that the whole car-
riage folds together like a knife.

MetaFlex 18 is a MetaQ 60 with hook lift frameBasic components like axle mounting and wheel options
are the same for these trailers.
The answers from Metsj when it comes to hook lift trai-
lers are that they should have the same characteristics as
the conventional MetaQ trailer when it concerns tippinggeometry and platform heights.
This makes Metsj superstructures a natural choice.
When shifting, 2 double acting functions are used, for the
boom and sliding hook lift tower. These two functions run
parallel during the shifting sequence to get the smoothest
container shifting. To be able to make a safe and gentle
shifting with small repose angle on a heavily loaded con-
tainer, you need to get the grip of the container as close
to the rear axle as possible. The shifting sequence is con-
trolled by the sliding hook lift tower so that the container
touch the rear hook lift rollers during the lift-on sequence.
Note that trailer wheel diameter has a big influence onshifting characteristics as well as the number of axles.
When the lift sequence for lifting the container starts, the
two boom cylinders are retracted, this is to get the cylin-
ders positive side working and to decrease the oil volume
needed. With the sliding tower, the driver him self regulate
the weight that affects on the tractor.
Basic setting for a 6000 mm container with an equal load,
is that the container front wall is in line with the first cross
beam of the chassis. Drawbar load on the tractor is then
2800 kg. The drawbar load can be adjusted during dri-
ving. Locking of the container acc. to SIS 3021 (length
4500 - 7000 mm, standard length 6000 mm), is a locking
claw welded on to the tipping frame. The container rear
angle iron moves in under the claw when pulling the con-
tainer up on the frame with the hook tower, this is done
automatically.The hook is hinged to get a smooth shifting without boun-
ces. The hook lift trailer is equipped with an axle suspen-
sion of the type communicating vessels. The axle suspen-
sion is locked at lift-off / lift-on when you reach a pressure
of 60 bar at the shifting sequence. The limit of 60 bar is a

without container and the hook tower in its rear position.
A very commonly chosen optional equipment is height
adjustment of the chassis from the driver seat.

roller shaft during shifting. A chassis that rest on the rear
axle dont need an axle bogie locking system. Tippingis done with a telescopic cylinder to get the best tipping
characteristics (speed/oil volume/tipping angle). Altering
between tipping and shifting controlled hydraulic/mecha-
nical by the sliding hook tower. The wheel suspension,
also named communication vessels is a design that has
been developed by Metsj under a long time (the sys-
tem is standard on all Metsj trailers above 14 ton). The
suspension was basically developed for the platform shift
trailers, where its most important to be able to control the
height of the chassis.

MetaFlex 24 tridem trailer is a MetaQ 60 trailer
with hook lift frame and multiple axlesThe tridem axle gives an increased payload up to 24 tons,
(technical load 31,5 tons/62 km). The load per axle is less
which gives a more gentle contact with the ground. (soil
compaction). A wheel alternative with smaller diameteroften gives better comfort when shifting containers (The
laws of nature and gravity still exist)

MetaFlex 24Q tridem axleMetaFlex 24Q triple axle is a MetaQ 75 with
hook lift frameBasic components as wheel suspension and wheel options
are the same for these trailers.
The Metsj solution for hook lift trailers has the same cha-
racteristics as the conventional MetaQ trailer when it comes
to tipping geometry and platform height. Platform length is
7500 mm but containers down to 4500 mm can be used
without any problem, a normal container has the length
of 6000 mm. Containers shorter than 7000, decrease the
drawbar load on the tractor. This makes Metsj superstruc-
tures a natural choice.
When shifting, 2 double acting functions are used, for the
boom and sliding hook lift tower. These two functions run
parallel during the shifting sequence to get the smoothest
container shifting. To be able to make a safe and gentle
shifting with small repose angle on a heavily loaded contai-
ner, you need to get the grip of the container as close to therear axle as possible. The shifting sequence is controlled
by the sliding hook lift tower so that the container touch the
rear hook lift rollers during the lift-on sequence. Note that
trailer wheel diameter has a big influence on shifting charac-
teristics as well as the number of axles. When the
lift sequence for lifting the container starts, the two boom
cylinders are retracted, this is to get the cylinders positive
side working and to decrease the oil volume needed.
The drawbar load can be adjusted during driving. Locking of
the container acc. to SIS 3021 (length 4500 - 7000 mm) is a
locking claw welded on to the tipping frame. The container
rear angle iron moves in under the claw when pulling the
container up on the frame with the hook tower, this is done
automatically. The hook is hinged to get a smooth shifting
without bounces. The hook lift trailer is equipped with anaxle suspension of the type communicating vessels. The
axle suspension is locked at lift-of / lift-on when you reach
a pressure of 60 bar at the shifting sequence.
The limit of 60 bar is a basic setting to get an open axle
suspension when driving without container and the hook
tower in its rear position.
A very commonly chosen optional equipment is height ad-
justment of the chassis from the driver seat. Item no.: 10713
This makes it possible to lower the rear roller shaft during
shifting. A chassis that rest on the rear axle dont need an
axle bogie locking system.
Tipping is done with a telescopic cylinder to get the besttipping characteristics (speed/oil volume/tipping angle).
Altering between tipping and shifting controlled hydraulic/
mechanical by the sliding hook tower. The wheel suspen-
sion, also named communication vessels is a design that
has been developed by Metsj under a long time (the sys-
tem is standard on all Metsj trailers above 14 tons).
The suspension was basically developed for the platform
shift trailers, where its most important to be able to control
the height of the chassis.

Description of suspension system communicating ves-
sels, which is standard on MetaFlex 18, 24 and 24Q.
Axles are supported by 2 hydr. cylinders, 1 / each side.
For pendulum and suspension, on each side, the vessels
are connected in series, which gives the same pressure
on all axles and drawbar weight on the tractor, regardlessof the situation. A solid single piece axle from tyre to tyre
(stops trailer from being knock-kneed). Axle moun-
tings on the longitudinal main frame for each axle (on a
conventional pendulum bogie the load is concentrated
to one point). Axles with the same design as full speed
axles mounted on trucks. Permissible load on each axle
is 10.500 kg at 62 km/h. Chassis height can adjusted
350 mm, but you must keep in mind that some axle
movement (ca 80 mm) is needed when driving in terrain
(a pendulum bogie needs 150 mm). This chassis height
adjustment is used for the MetaQ system.
There are two different kinds of wheel suspension, theRoad system which is standard and the Terrain system.
The difference for these two systems is that their optimal
characteristics is best utilized in the environment respec-
tively system is developed for. The Road system is best
suited in terrain, with not to much broken ground, and
when use for road transportation is common.
The Terrain system, as the name tells, is more adapted to
a tougher environment where the axle movement pattern
is completely different. Axle movement pattern makes it
possible for lateral movement with full cylinder strokes,
where the lateral difference in level is up around 500 - 600
mm. This is really tough off-road driving. This system may
be ordered as an option on all trailers that have the com-munictaion vessels as MetaQ and MetaFlex 18 - 24. On
a gyro axle the axle centreline is moved, which makes the
conventional parable suspension arm more suitable under
more normal conditions due to its swinging stabilization
function. This suspension system is standard on normal
trailers used for mixed transportations on the road and on
the field.
Facts about axlesThe axles mounted on trailers from Ivarssons i Metsjare designed for speeds up to 62 km/h. Axle superstruc-
ture is the same as for 100 km/h full speed axles. Wheel
bolts and nuts are Dacron threatened/zinc coated. The
domed nut protects the wheel bolt in the aggressive
environment that most often is a fact. The rim flange, of
course, is without paint.
Wheel hub lubrication interval is 50000 km or every se-
cond year. The hub has no greasing nipple due to the ex-
tended lubrication interval and the risk of overfilling grease
with overheating as a result). Calculated axle bearing life
time is app. one turn around the globe.
This is a great advantage since the big spot load fromthe wheel does not affect the same spot on the bearing,
which increase bearing lifetime considerably. Axle design
is tested and approved acc. to norm TE 4050, which
guarantee an extended lifetime.
Braking efficiency acc. to. vvfs 2003:6
The axles are equipped with adjustable brake actuating
lever. There is a mechanical seal between the brake shield
and the drum. Brake shoes are lathed and adapted from
the factory which in reality means they are worn in already.
Its very important not to handle the trailer without wheels
directly on the brake drums since that easily leads to
uneven brake power.
Axles can be prepared for ABS anti locking system, which
also may be used for distance calculation. Axle treatment
from manufacturer acc. to. KTL painting.

Self steering axleAxle superstructure with self steering axles and hydraulic
locking. This is standard on axle 3 on a tridem axle, it is
possible to choose steering on more than one axle.

A self steering axle, when driving forward, gives the trailer
increased manoeuvrability, less ground damages and tyre
wear, this applies both for an empty and a loaded trailer.
The steering geometry is patented, the so-called LL prin-
ciple (Lastabhngige lenkstabilisation).
The axle is assembled via a curve shaped thrust block.
When driving forward, the wheels are held in correct
position by the trust block curves. When the trailer makes
a turn, the trust block slides a part and the axle is able
to steer. The force needed for the axle to steer is depen-
dent of the axle load. Tests shows that the axle design is
capable of working at higher speeds in unlocked position
than the same axle without curve shaped trust block. This
solution is gentle to the ground on the field, but it
also gives higher comfort on the road at narrow passes,
e.g. roundabouts. If big size wheel are chosen for the
trailer and the trailer is connected e.g. to a trailed forage
harvester, there is always a risk that the trailer is steering
the forage harvester side wards. This is eliminated by an
axle system with a self steering axle. The self steering axle
also spare the trailer chassis and tyre bodies, especially at
low tyre pressures.
Possibility to steer an active steering/self steering axle
from cab with one double acting outlet per axle. This is an
option. Item no.: 10711
This makes it easier to catch a container, since its most
common to have the last axle with active steering.
Its also possible to steer out the trailer to follow the
tracks of the tractor when you leave the field to enter a
narrow road. With a simple grip from the driver seat its
possible to change the axle from self steering to locked
position.
When mounting the road system,
the parallelism of the axle bodies are
measured with laser to obtain mi-
nimum rolling resistance, tyre wearand fuel consumption. Its possible
to adjust the axles during the entire
lifetime of the trailer. Patented steeringfunction
