Paranoid dealer throws €3m of coke out window

AN IRISH drugs trafficker was arrested after throwing two suitcases containing 55kg of cocaine out of an eighth-floor hotel window during an attack of paranoia.

The 39-year-old is said to have tried to re-cover the cases after they landed in an inter-nal patio at his hotel in Valencia, Spain.

But a receptionist had already called police after finding the drugs scattered over the floor and the dopey drugs smuggler was arrested after finding he was locked out of his room and went to ask for another key.

The incident happened just before 10pm on Friday at the Hotel Tryp Valencia Oceánic.

The Irishman is also reported to have dam-aged his room by trying to hide the €3million worth of cocaine behind ceiling tiles and dis-connecting the flush on his toilet.

Detectives believe he suffered an attack of paranoia after consuming drugs – and threw the suitcases out of his window after confus-ing the noise from guests entering and leav-ing neighbouring rooms with rival criminals trying to steal his drugs.

Local Valencian paper Las Provincias quot-ed an unnamed hotel employee as saying: ‘He disconnected the toilet flush and caused quite a bit of damage in his room.

‘He looked like he’d suddenly gone mad after throwing the drugs out of his room.’

Tom Cruise’s boy swapsgummy bears for vodka

Tom Cruise’s adopted lad Connor looked unrecognisable when he emerged in the earlier hours from a London celeb haunt.

The 19-year-old showed off his transformation from sporting buff to late night stop out after swapping his favourite vice of Gummy Bear sweets to vodka and tequila dur-ing a night on the lash at Boujis in West London.

The last time the A-list offspring had turned up to the famous South Kensington venue was to DJ last year.

Back then his top priority was a sugar rush when he insisted on the confectionary being on his rider – this time it was drinks all round when Cruise Junior allegedly ordered Belvedere vodka and Patron tequila for his VIP table of friends. And it seems the swap in party treats won him far more suc-

cess as he was spotted dancing and ‘deep in conversation’ with plenty of interested women in the club.

However, it was his dramatic change in appearance that was the talking point.

Connor, the son also of Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman, once looked to be following in his trim fitness ob-sessed father’s footsteps by staying in shape.

However, his shock change in ap-pearance left him unrecognisable to regulars at the club.

One told me: ‘The last time he was there DJing he was a big hit with clubbers but he went largely unno-ticed this time around.’

But he was still unmistakable to the paparazzi waiting for his exit.

They snapped the lad chugging on a cigarette when he called it a night at 3am.

Anglo pair arrested and charged with loan fraudby ED CARTy

TWO former bankers with the defunct Anglo Irish Bank are to stand trial for al-leged fraud over an €8million loan ar-ranged for one of them.

Pat Whelan and Willie McAteer ap-peared before Dublin District Court yes-terday and were remanded on bail by Judge John O’Neill. The former Anglo directors are due to appear before the court again in November. Both are charged under the Companies Act with arranging a loan for McAteer worth €8,246,307 which was secured against shares he held in the liquidised lender.

The charge states that the money was ar-ranged in 2008 to pay off a loan he owed to Bank of Ireland which he was person-ally liable for. It also states the loan pro-vided a gain to McAteer and a loss to An-glo contrary to section 297 of the Companies Act 1963 as substituted by section 137 of the Companies Act 1990.

McAteer, with an address at Greenrath, Tipperary Town, was a former head of finance and risk, while Whelan, who lives on the Coast Road, Malahide, Dub-lin, was a former head of lending.

Fraud squad officers arrested the men in Dublin city centre yesterday morning.

10 hurt as boats capsize in regatta hit by sudden squall

by LukE HOLOHAn

IRAQ’S new president has snubbed the powerful incumbent prime minister Nouri al-Maliki and nominated the deputy parliament speaker to form the new government, raising fears of more in-fighting as the country faces the threat of Sunni militants in the north.

President Fouad Massoum picked Haider al-Ibadi to form a new govern-ment after he was nominated by the Iraqi National Alliance, a coalition of Shiite parties.

Al-Maliki’s Dawa Party rejected al-Ibadi’s nomination, as al-Maliki deployed elite security forces in Baghdad, raising fears he may use force to stay in power.

Mahmoud Bazzi, 71, is to be returned to his homeland where he could stand trial for the abduction, torture and double killings while serving with a Christian militia.

Privates Derek Smallhorne, from Dublin, and Thomas Barrett, from Cork, were on duty near the Israeli border on April 18, 1980, when they were captured. An RTÉ Prime Time investigation traced Bazzi to the Detroit area in 2000.

TEN sailors were injured when a re-gatta in Northern Ireland was hit by a squall yesterday afternoon.

The casualties were mostly suffering from hypothermia after more than 200 people competing in 88 sailing din-ghies were hit by a sudden change in the weather on Strangford Lough, the Maritime and Coastguard agency said.

Initial reports suggested scores of

people went into the water after a spate of capsizes but officials later scaled back the figure, saying 20 people were believed to have gone overboard.

Among the injured were two teenage boys, a woman, believed to be in her 30s, who injured an arm, and another sailor who suffered a head injury.

Two people with minor injuries were taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald after being treated by par-amedics at the East Down Yacht Club near Killyleagh.

The dinghies hit by the squall had been competing in the GP14 World Championships with competitors from local clubs, Ireland, England and Australia among other countries.

Belfast Coastguard was first con-tacted just before 2pm with reports some of the boats had capsized, while others were struggling to cope in the strong winds and squally showers.

Liam Colquhoun, watch manager at Belfast Coastguard, confirmed that the search and rescue operation had been a success and that it was called off within three hours.

Don’t hoard your old TV, send it off for recyclingFORTY-FIVE per cent of all electrical waste items are being recycled, but rogue collectors and hoarding has to be stopped if the other 55 per cent is to be recycled too, WEEE Ireland has warned.

WEEE Ireland, the Irish compliance scheme for electrical and battery recycling which released its annual report, revealed that recycling needs to increase to at least 65 per cent by 2019 to comply with new legislation.

Leo Donavan of WEEE Ireland said there were environmental concerns because of rogue collectors who are not properly recycling electrical waste.

In 2013, WEEE Ireland recycled 25,651 tonnes of electrical waste.

More of us are putting away cashMORE people are saving regularly, an index has shown.

The Nationwide UK (Ireland)/ESRI Savings Index, which measures overall sentiment towards saving, increased to 102 in July, seven-points up on June.

The increase was mostly driven by an 18-point jump in the Savings Attitude Index, which asks people about their saving behaviour and how they feel about the amount they save. In July, regular savers increased to 41 per cent from 35 per cent last month in both the over-50s and under-50s.

Since January, the level of regular saving has gradually improved and this month’s data represents a reversal of a decline which started in autumn 2012.

The Savings Environment sub-index, which gauges opinion on economic conditions and the impact of government policy, fell to 78 from 80 last month.

SOME 37 per cent of working women in Ireland worry their employers and co-workers will judge them based on the food they eat, a survey has revealed.

The study of women’s eating habits showed 83 per cent said their confidence is linked to their body weight, with women in Dublin more inclined than women in other counties to experience ‘intense pressure’ to get a ‘celebrity body’.

Promoting Jacob’s Real Me Moments campaign, ambassador Kathryn Thomas, said: ‘It’s more important than ever to encourage a more balanced approach to health and beauty.’

One in five women said they are not confident about their appearance, with 65 per cent saying the stubborn

stomach was their ‘biggest hang-up’.

Irish women are ‘facing increased pressure’ from magazines and social media to match up to ‘unrealistic body perfection’, Thomas said.

While most women said they love food, 57 per cent said guilt stopped them enjoying it, with 37 per cent fretting over office judgment and 52 per cent ‘constantly worrying’ about what they can and can’t eat.

The survey also found three out of four would challenge a colleague over mistakenly eating their lunch – two per cent would make a formal complaint.

Vikings to hold open call for 300 ‘ethnic’ extrasYOU might want to practise your Viking roar as the hit TV show is holding an opencasting call for extras in Dublin.

The show is seeking up to 300 ‘ethnic extras’ frombackgrounds as far flung as theMiddle East, Africa, India,South America and Asia.

The historical drama, whichfollows the life of warrior hero Ragnar Lothbrok, and stars former Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel, is filmed in Ireland. Series three is due to air next year.

NEARLY three-quarters of Irish em-ployees work from home outside of-fice hours, research has found.

The survey found 72 per cent admit-ting that they do engage in some out- of-office work from their homes.

Vitamin makers Pharmaton, who conducted the survey, also found that Irish women are busier than their male counterparts – expending on av-erage 15 per cent more energy during the week.

Of those surveyed, 40 per cent said if they had time to spare, they’d prefer to spend it exercising.

While 55 per cent of the 100 re-spondents said they’re on top of things, 40 per cent admitted they feel totally stretched and needed to take more ‘me time’.

Family, friends and work responsi-bilities were top priorities for all, but

of those needing a little personal time, 45 per cent said they would like to ex-ercise more.

Highlighting the challenges faced by Irish women, the survey also found 70 per cent of females felt they didn’t have enough time to keep fit and spend time with family and friends.

The news that most people work from home won’t come as a surprise to busy professionals. A recent Fast-net Recruitment study showed 60 per

cent of employers expect their work-force to check on emails even when they’re off. And in the same survey, eight out of ten said they believed re-mote email access was contributing to longer working hours.

The problem is not limited to Ire-land either. In France in April, a new labour agreement was brought in af-ter unions complained that their mem-bers were dealing with work issues on their time off.

Supermoon lights up the night sky

by LukE HOLOHAn

THESE incredible pictures show the moon at its biggest and brightest for 20 years.

The spectacle was created as the moon reached the point in its orbit closest to Earth – known as perigee – at the same time as it became full.

On Sunday night, the moon was just 356,896km away and appeared 16 per cent larg-er and 30 per cent brighter than usual.

Supermoons occur every 13 months and 18 days, but are not always noticed because of cloudy weather.

They have been proven to cause sea levels to rise and have been linked to earthquakes, vol-canic eruptions and tidal waves. This year has five supermoons – two new moons in January and full moons in July, August and September.

THE €67,000 pAckAgE HOLiDAy

IF YOU’RE looking for a low-budget break, this particular package deal may not be the best option. But supposing you do have €66,900 saved up, you can now walk along the Great Wall of China, climb the Eiffel

Tower and explore the souks of Marrakech, all on one ticket. TCS Expeditions came up with the 25-day round-the-world trip, taking in 35 sights, having done research to find the most sought-after destinations.

THE stunning Co Clare scenery is now available for all to see on Google Street View, thanks to a partnership between the web giant and the Clare Local Development Company (CLDC).

In the first Irish collaboration, the team up is part of Google’s Trekker Loan programme, which sees tourism organisations get a loan of Street View record-ing equipment.

Speaking on the collaboration, CLDC rural officer Eoin Hogan said: ‘Our motivation for getting involved in the Trekker pro-gramme was to be able to showcase our stunning native landscape and inspire a wider

audience to come and visit the county’s trail for themselves.’

With the help of local farmers the project was completed in less than three weeks, with 21 hours of footage collected from six trails – covering more than 46km. The Cliffs of Moher benefits from the programme; a 12km coastal walk from Liscan-nor to Doolin has been recorded, with a coastal, roadway and

cliff-top trail available for trekkers.

The joint effort from Clare County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Fáilte Ireland and Shannon Development means that loop walks including Lough Avalla, Ballycuggeran near Lough Derg and Blackhead trail are now covered more in-depth on Google’s mapping tool.

Two dead in drive-by shooting in the latest New Orleans violencePOLICE in New Orleans were yesterday investigating a drive-by shooting that killed a man and an 18-year-old woman and wounded five other people, three of them children.

The shooting happened around 8pm on Sunday in the city’s Lower 9th Ward, a neighbourhood that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has struggled with crime.

A woman and two children, aged two and four, were in critical condition and a 13-year-old girl and a 37-year-old woman were in stable condition, according to police spokesman Frank Robertson.

All the victims were in front of a house when a dark car occupied by several men drove up, opened fire and sped off, Robertson said. Police have not released details of the shooting or a description of the suspects.

The Lower 9th, a predominantly black neighbourhood less than 8km from the tourist district of the French Quarter, was overwhelmed by Katrina’s floods in 2005.

The shooting is the latest in a city dependent on tourism. In June, two men exchanged gunfire on Bourbon

Street, killing one person and wounding nine others.

In a separate incident, a 20-year-old man shot a friend on Sunday morning inside a hotel room at the edge of the quarter, then killed himself after a three-hour stand-off with police.

The shootings happened at The Westin on Canal Street, where four friends were staying for the week-end. Three of them came in from partying, waking the fourth about 5am. The man was awoken again by the plea: ‘Put the gun down.’

The 20-year-old, looking ‘dazed’ and ‘under the influence of an unknown substance,’ shot his 24-year-old friend in the chest at about 6.30am.

Ms Alamuddin, who is engaged to marry Hollywood star George Clooney, is a London-based inter-national law specialist and former legal adviser to the prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

She will serve alongside Doudou Diene of Senegal, a lawyer who has filled UN posts on racism and hu-man rights in Ivory Coast, and Can-ada’s William Schabas, an interna-

tional law professor at Middlesex University, who will chair the com-mission.

Meanwhile, a 72-hour ceasefire in Gaza that began on Sunday ap-peared to be holding last night.

Since the conflict began a month ago, 1,938 Palestinians have been killed, along with 67 Israelis.

Pro-Palestinian Turkish group the Humanitarian Relief Foundation also plans to send aid ships, despite an Israeli blockade, four years after ten activists died in a similar flotilla.

In cool East Amsterdam you’ll find pop-up spaces Trouw (inside a one-time newspaper printworks but now home to a restaurant, bar, gallery and record label) and Baut (a bar and restaurant serving simple dishes such as steak tartare with bacon mayonnaise).

The neighbourhood is also home to the edgy new Volkshotel, built inside the former office of Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. Occupying its seventh floor – try for a seat on the terrace – is Canvas, a club-bar-restaurant that serves high-quality takes on Dutch classics: smoked trout with ras-el-hanout mayonnaise or Kloosterbig

The magical coconut just keeps on giving. The benefits of coconut water have long been known, but now coconut oil is winning celebrity fans. Claimed to maintain cholesterol levels, boost metabolism, increase immunity levels and reduce high blood pressure, earlier this year it was even reported to have reduced the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr, 31, has admitted it’s her beauty secret, while Brazilian supermodel, Gisele Bundchen, 34, uses it as a main ingredient in her organic skincare line, Sejaa pure skincare.

So what’s all the fuss about? ‘While there’s little evidence to show coconut oil has health benefits, there is lots of anecdotal evidence,’ says Sarah Brown, nutritional therapist at Pure Sports Medicine. ‘So hopefully this will lead to more research into this superfood.’

What it can help with: Weight loss – Angelina Jolie (below) has been known to start her day with little more than a spoonful of coconut oil and a handful of cereal. ‘There is evidence to support coconut oil for weight loss,’ says Brown.

‘Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid (long

train fatty acids are the ones that are bad for us). It effectively goes straight to the liver and is metabolised into energy. Some

people take a spoonful of coconut oil before they work out as it can boost performance.’

Health conditions:Gwyneth Paltrow (right) reportedly slathers herself with extra-virgin organic coconut oil after a bath.

‘There’s no evidence to show that applying coconut oil to the skin makes a difference to skin conditions such as

eczema and psoriasis, but because of the mechanisms behind these conditions and the way they lead to inflammation in the body, it’s possible eating coconut oil can

reduce them. There are reports looking at populations where

coconut oil is used a lot which show they have low incidences of things like cardiovascular disease.’

Immunity: Celebrity trainer James Duigan suggests taking four

teaspoons of coconut oil every day, by adding it to smoothies, tea or coffee. Coconut oil is made up of the healthy fatty acids lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid, which contain antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties to boost the immune system.

Beauty: Kourtney Kardashian includes coconut oil in her beauty regime. ‘I use the oil as a hair mask and I use coconut oil as body lotion every day,’ says the reality star. ‘Coconut oil is a natural product so some use it as a makeup remover and even make body scrubs with it. It can also be used as an antibacterial mouth wash.’

How to include it: Sarah Brown says coconut oil is one of the most stable oils you can cook with. ‘When you get over a certain temperature the heat breaks down the chemical formation of oils and they become toxic. Olive oil, for example, should only be used cold on salad dressings. Substitute olive oil and vegetable oil with coconut oil when you are frying or roasting food.’

‘Photoshopping’ to alter an

I ACCIDENTALLY watched The Karate Kid trilogy last Sunday. The movies caused a martial arts explosion in the 1980s, fuelling video games such as Street Fighter. Amazingly, the series, which follows characters competing in a worldwide tournament, is still alive and kicking 27 years after first appeared in arcades in 1987.

According to the fictional bio of main protagonist Ryu, he turned 50 a fortnight ago, while best friend and rival Ken Masters reaches that milestone next February. Incidentally, actor Ralph Macchio who played Daniel LaRusso in the Karate Kid films, is now 52.

Despite getting on a bit, Ryu and Ken are still very much at the heart of Ultra Street Fighter IV. But things have moved on apace from the original arcade outing, where they were the only playable characters, and reliant on just three special moves: ‘Hadouken’, ‘Shoryuken’, and ‘Tatsumaki Senpuuyaku’.

The game introduces five new

characters called Decapre, Elena, characters called Decapre, Elena, characters called Decapre, Elena, Poison, Rolento, and the significantly less scary sounding Hugo, who just happens to sport a pink leopard skin tank top too. Don’t be fooled, however, Hugo is the tallest character in Street Fighter history at just under 8ft.

That brings the roster up to a total of 44 fighters to choose from and a heck of a lot of actors needed to voice them. Useless trivia: Laura Bailey, who portrays female character Chun-Li, is married in real life to Travis Willingham, who plays air force major Guile. In an early version of Street Fighter, an unfortunate glitch had Guile taunt Chun-Li to ‘Go home and be a family man’. Let’s hope it’s all water under the bridge.

There are six new arenas to battle in and new game modes, while fan feedback has prompted developer Capcom to tinker with the balance of the bouts and the gameplay mechanics. Social media has been embraced too, with players encouraged to upload footage to YouTube, ensuring Street Fighter continues to have more reach than elastic-limbed character Dhalsim.

It LOOKS a little like the Starship Enterprise, but it’s on two wheels and is bold-ly going where no bike has gone before. the teague

Denny includes handlebars that change into a bike lock, auto-matic lights for night riding, braking and indicating, as well as nifty electric pedal assist to spur you up hills.

Everything is powered up by a removable battery, which can be recharged while you’re at work. It even provides enough juice for an on-board computer, which measures resistance and auto-matically changes gear depend-ing on how hard you’re pedal-ling.

Forget traditional-style bas-kets. the teague Denny’s clever

front storage has space for tab-lets, laptops and even cappucci-nos, while a revolutionary rear brush replaces the traditional mud guard to save weight – and your outfit.

Seattle design consultancy teague created the look of the first Polaroid camera, the iconic UPS parcel truck, and the Pring-les crisp canister. the Denny is its latest triumph and has just won the coveted Oregon Mani-fest Design Bike Project – voted for by the public – ahead of go-ing on sale next year in a tie-up with Fuji Bikes.

Karen Bliss, from Fuji, says: ‘the Denny features the kind of innovations we had hoped would come from these collaborations, and we anticipate a sales success while introducing and reintro-ducing people to the joy of rid-ing a bike.’

Roger Jackson from teague adds: ‘the fact that this was a public vote means a lot to our team, so we’re super-excited to reward those voters by working with Fuji to refine the Denny and bring a great biking experi-ence to market. We were up against some fierce competition, so this is a proud moment for us.’ A price has yet to be re-vealed, but you can find out more by visiting teague.com.

From old country to the coolest city

There’s no shortage of places in Nashville at which to pay homage to country musicalgreats, or – for those who feel their educationis a little lacking – to swot up on the genre. This spring, the vast, rhinestone-studdedCountry Music Hall of Fame will more thandouble in size, following a $75millionexpansion. And just around the corner is the

recently opened tribute to one of the city’sbiggest heroes, the late Johnny Cash – theman in black.

The intimate and lovingly curated museum isstuffed with artefacts and awards from Cash’sfive decades of performing and his early andprivate life, including letters to his secondwife, June Carter Cash (left, with Johnny).

There are interactive sections, allowingvisitors to hear albums or old live recordings, but the most moving and enlighteningaspects are those that document Cash’sstruggles and his passions, his marriages, drug addictions and his work on behalf ofprison reform.(€10.90, johnnycashmuseum.com) JM

Nashville’s reputation is built on the great names of country music but, as Jane Mulkerrins discovers, there’s a new energy blowing through its Tennessee streets N

ashville, Tennessee is having a moment. after The New York Times anointed it ‘the coolest city in the Us’

last year, it’s now made the ‘must-visit in 2014’ lists in glossy getaway bibles Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + leisure, while virgin hotels is opening a hotel on the city’s famousMusic Row, which will be filled with themed suites and a recording studio. Meanwhile, the hayden Panettiere Tv drama Nashville, set and filmed in the city, is shining a sexy spotlight on its southern charms for a second hit season over on More4.

Nashville has been the heartbeat of the Us songwriting and countrymusic scene for more than 50 years, attracting greats including Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Tammy Wynette and Willie Nelson, who have set up homes and recorded hits here. singingand strumming is the way of life here – wander into any bar (smoking is still permitted), restaurant or barbecue

joint and no matter how tiny, or what time, you’ll hear live music.

and the scene is no longer just about the traditional honky-tonk bars along Broadway (the best of which is the joyfully raucous Robert’s West-ern World, robertswesternworld.com) and famous songwriters’ venues such as The BlueBird Café (bluebirdcafe.com). a younger generation of musi-cians and artists – led by the likes of Taylor swift, The Black Keys and Kings Of leon – have brought with them a blossoming fashion, food and nightlife scene which are breathing new life into old streets.

The newfound hipster stronghold has the predictable population of luxuriantly bearded boys and pretty girls with prominent tattoos, but what first marks it out from other

formerly gritty, now similarly fashionable, areas such as Wil-liamsburg in New York or lon-

‘Then the gay community began moving here into beautiful homes they could fully restore,’ says Mac-Fadyen. ‘Then the artists and musi-cians followed, and a creative spirit took hold.’

a sense of frivolity and fun perme-ates the place; MacFadyen founded the annual Tomato Festival, which sees thousands dress up in tomato-themed outfits each august and parade through the streets of east Nashville, competing in Bloody Mary and redhead contests.

to do for small retailers what incuba-tor projects have done for tech start-ups. East Nashville is now home to clusters of tiny, high-end western boutiques and independent outlets, all operating with low overheads and selling gourmet oatmeal and books by Tennessee authors.

The watchword with property here is repurposing. Barista Parlor (baristaparlor.com) is a cavernous old carwash, now serving carefully selected coffees – each with tasting notes – brewed in intricate-looking chemistry-set apparatus. The Family Wash (familywash.com) is a fabu-lously kitsch former launderette turned cosy music venue, bar and

restaurant, with formica tables, fairy lights and highly-rated pies.

There’s no shortage of late-night drinking options either, including Crying Wolf (thecryingwolf.com), a huge, dark, moody bar and perform-ance space decorated in animal skulls.

Meanwhile, Monday night’s Keep On Movin’ party at the Five Spot – an old-school southern soul night (the5spotlive.com) in an otherwise unremarkable one-room bar and club – has been labelled ‘the most stylish party in America’ by GQ.

The question now, clearly, is not whether to go, but what to wear when you get there.

You really had to be there! Ireland’s Top Dogs (in corporate terms), fought bravely through all of the rounds to finally win the Pres-

tigious Metro Herald Corporate Cup. At Bowl semi-final stage, it was a

close call between Vodafone and Aecom at 5-4, while the other semi featured Maxim Integrated emerging triumphant over Informa-tion Mosaic, 4-2.

Vodafone went on to take the Bowl from Maxim Integrated 7-5.

In the Plate, RSM Farrell Grant Sparks came through their semi-final, 6-2 over Grant Thornton, setting up a decider against hosts Metro Herald, who took out Citibank 8-2.

The final was truly an electric affair and as the full-time whistle went the sides were still scoreless.

The Golden Try rule ensued (first to score) and Metro Herald drove through the tight defence of RSM to claim the Plate.

The Cup competition proved to be tense and really competitive as both semi-finals yielded the same winning score.

KPMG took out Accenture 6-1 and Deloitte triumphed over last year’s champions, PwC, 6-1.

The final was a real humdinger as KPMG just got the edge and beat Deloitte 6-4 to become Metro Herald Corporate Cup Champions.

As well as the trophy and the pres-tige, the generous prize fund of €15,000 worth of advertising in Met-ro Herald was celebrated over beer and barbecue on a super evening in Wanderers RFC on Merrion Rd.

Lampard was the mainstay of the Blues’ mid-field during 13 glittering years at Stamford Bridge but Mourinho insists his £30million sum-mer capture from Barcelona can fill his shoes.

And while 36-year-old Lampard sat on the Manchester City bench for Sunday’s Commu-nity Shield defeat by Arsenal – having joined on

‘Frank is the history of the club – history nobody can forget,’ said Mourinho. ‘Fabregas is the fu-ture. History is history but the future is more im-portant at the moment. My opinion, and the opin-ion of my players, is Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.’

PHIL MICKELSON chose not to criticise organisers despite the two players in the group behind – including Rory McIlroy – hitting their approach shots to the final green before he and Rickie Fowler had completed the hole.

With darkness rapidly falling at Valhalla, officials were desperate to get the tournament finished on time, and American Mickelson did appear to be agitated as he ended his round on the 18th.

However, he said afterwards: ‘It didn’t affect the outcome, I think. It’s not what we normally do but it’s not a big deal.

Fowler explained it was a surprise to him and Mickelson when McIlroy and Bernd Wiesberger played their second shots into the green.

‘We were cool with hitting the tee shot,’ Fowler said. ‘We weren’t expecting the approach shots. It changes things a little bit. Obviously, there is no waiting. Phil and I waited on the tee for a good amount of time and had to hit tee shots.

‘In a way, they [McIlroy and Wiesberger] never got out of rhythm as far as hitting shots.’

Mickelson has now finished as a runner-up in nine majors, while Fowler has finished in the top five of all four majors this year.

RoRy McIlRoy insists he is taking it one step at a time as he sets about trying to make golfing history, and says he would love to become the most successful European of all time.

McIlroy won a fourth major with a dramatic triumph at the US PGA at Valhalla on Sunday.

There has been talk of a possible Grand Slam next year – if he wins the Masters and US open – and even of challenging the 14 majors won by Tiger Woods.

But McIlroy insists he’s first think-ing about a career Grand Slam – he needs to win the Masters one day to achieve that – and becoming the most successful European of the modern era. Seve Ballesteros, with five ma-jors, and Nick Faldo, with six, are now in his sights.

‘I think I’ve got to take it one small

step at a time,’ said the 25-year-old.‘The two next realistic goals are the

career Grand Slam and trying to be the most successful European player ever in the modern era. And hope-

fully, when I achieve those, I can start to think about other things.’

McIlroy’s recovery from last year, when he was struggling with new equipment and labelling himself ‘brain dead’ after missing the cut at The open, is a remarkable one.

‘I’ve got that sense of belief in my-self now that I go into every tourna-ment I play knowing that I can win,’ added McIlroy.

‘It’s a great feeling to have. I think I’ve always had that sense but after this run, it’s confirmed I can turn up at any tournament anywhere in the world and know if I play my game, I can walk away with a trophy.’

McIlroy now plans to show off the Claret Jug – and perhaps the Wana-maker Trophy too – at old Trafford on Saturday, where his beloved Manches-ter United will play Swansea in their Premier league opener. ‘That will be a great thrill,’ McIlroy admitted.

Rory’s Grand planman-of-the-moment mactargets tiger’s historic set

US PGA – PAGe 23«

RoRy McIlRoy is counting down the days to next year’s Masters as he eyes up the possibility of becoming only the second golfer to hold all four major titles at the same time.

The 25-year-old’s stunning victory at Valhalla saw him add the US PGA crown to the open triumph he secured at Hoylake earlier this summer.

Success at Augusta next April would not only complete a career Grand Slam for McIlroy but edge him tantalisingly close to emulating Tiger Woods’ feat of winning the US open, The open and US PGA Championship in 2000, and then The Masters in 2001.

‘Hopefully I’m in just as good form heading into Augusta next year and have a chance to win the career Grand

Slam,’ said McIlroy. ‘If that happens, then we’ll turn our attention to Cham-bers Bay [venue for next June’s US open] and try and get the job done.

‘I was happy being a two-time major champion and all of a sudden I’m a four-time major champion and going for the career Grand Slam at Augusta in 242 days – not that I’m counting!’

In the meantime, McIlroy has the FedEx cup play-offs and the Ryder Cup ahead of him, while Woods re-mains a big question mark for the American team.

Woods has told captain Tom Watson

he wants to be chosen as a wild card for next month’s showdown at Glenea-gles despite only recently returning to action following back surgery.

Watson is confident Woods will be honest about his fitness, however, stat-ing: ‘Absolutely. He’s just like me. I’m direct and he’s direct. It really is going to have to come from Tiger himself.

‘He is Tiger Woods and he brings a lot to the team. If he has the ability to play and he’s healthy, I’d be a fool not to consider him.’

City boss Manuel sees new signing Mangala as central to the defence

Manchester city boss Manuel Pellegrini believes his new signing eliaquim Mangala has all the attributes to become one of the best central defenders in the world.

the 23-year-old (left) completed his £32million switch from Porto yesterday, becoming city’s sixth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of right-back Bacary sagna, goalkeeper Willy caballero and midfielders Fernando, Frank Lampard (on loan) and Bruno Zuculini.

having been beaten 3-0 by arsenal in sunday’s community

shield, the chilean stressed the need to have greater competition for places and Mangala’s arrival certainly gives him that in defence.

‘eliaquim is already a fine player but he has all of the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes to become one of europe’s very best defenders,’ said Pellegrini.

‘i believe he will make an immediate impact in the Premier League, thanks to his physicality, his reading of the game and quality on the ball.’

Mangala will link up again with Brazilian Fernando, who joined from Porto in June.

the France international centre-back said: ‘city is a top club in europe. it was an

important step to join city to continue my progress.

‘i want to win titles and i believe i can do this. i am ambitious and this is why i am here. the fact Fernando is here is better.

‘But there are also other players that i know at city like sagna, [Gael] clichy and [samir] nasri.’
