Musical genius Paco de Lucía transformed the Flamenco guitar from a marginal instrument into a worldwide phenomenon. By introducing cajon drum, bass, and percussion, he laid the foundation for a new Flamenco. He explained: “I never lost the roots of my music, because I would have lost myself. I have tried to hold onto

tradition with one hand while my other hand is scratching and digging all over trying to find new things I can incorporate into my music.”

WHAT A FEST !

Vivre une manifestation, c’est bien. La com-prendre, c’est encore mieux. A supposer que le Montreux Jazz Festival soit un « Où est Charlie ? » géant, sachez qu’il se cache quelque part un sec-teur méconnu et pourtant capital – j’ai nommé le backline.

Au deuxième étage du bâtiment A, il y a un local qu’on pénètre comme on pousserait les portes du cabinet de curiosité d’un mélomane fétichiste. A l’abri dans leurs caisses mutiques sommeillent plusieurs centaines d’instruments. A bien les regarder, et avec un certain sens de l’imagination, on verrait presque s’en échapper un fumet mélo-dique et virevoltant, chargé du souvenir sonore de tous ceux qui les manipulèrent.

Olivier, coordinateur backline et accessoire-ment sosie local de Brad Pitt, la gentillesse et la crête en plus, revient sur le parcours logistique de cette collection de merveilles partie de Pan-tin, le 25 juin dernier. En tout, c’est deux semi-remorques, soit quelque 180 mètres cubes de matériel qui quittèrent la région parisienne pour venir décharger sur des rivages autrement plus romantiques et prometteurs : sur toute la durée du Festival, la société BBS fournit en instruments quelque 120 concerts répartis sur une dizaine de scènes. Un casse-tête organisationnel qu’Olivier compare volontiers à Tetris « mais avec des tim-bales symphoniques et des violoncelles à la place des briques ». Et sans game-over, puisque pour satisfaire toutes les demandes, pas moins d’une trentaine de batteries, 20 guitares, 20 basses, 50 claviers, 130 percussions, 10 orgues et une vingtaine de pianos électriques ont été prévus. A ce casting de rêve s’ajoutent encore 10 backliners tout sourire et nécessairement délicats, spécialement mis à disposition de ces belles bêtes.

Pascal Graticola, directeur de BBS, estime satis-

faire 99% des demandes matérielles, répétitions au pied levé et jam sessions comprises. Malgré ce taux à faire chavirer le cœur des stage-managers, la quinzaine du Festival reste pour eux un vrai challenge. L’équipe se souvient encore avec émotion du 12 juillet 2011. Programmé pour le soir même à l’Auditorium Stravinski, le camion de Seal reste coincé à la frontière suisse. En quelques heures, il aura fallu réunir la totalité du backline du crooner pop-soul, qui n’est pas le dernier en matière de dispositif scénique… Le concert fait un carton, confirmant Pascal Graticola dans ses objectifs : « On est là pour ne pas faire entendre parler de nous. » Exception faite de ces pages, qui n’enlèvent rien à leur talent. Experiencing a major event is a good thing. Understanding it is even better. Hidden in the background of the enormous “Where’s Waldo?” that is the Montreux Jazz Festival there is a sector that almost no one notices, but whose importance cannot be overstated: the backline.

Entering the premises of the backline on the third floor of Building A feels like slipping into the private collection of a music-paraphernalia fetishist. Snugged away in their silent road cases, several hundred instruments wait patiently to be called into action. Seeing them arrayed there, with a little imagination you begin to sense a musical vibe spiraling around them, psycho-metric memories imparted by those who have used them as a conduit for their art.

Olivier, backline coordinator, (and also, in-cidentally, our local Brad Pitt lookalike, except for the Mohawk and the sweet disposition) filled

me in on the logistical trajectory of this beautiful assortment of equipment. Enough material to fill two semi-trailers left the outskirts of Paris back on June 25th before making its way to our romantic lakeshore venue. Throughout the Montreux Jazz Festival, the professionals from BBS will provide the instruments for some 120 concerts spread over a dozen different stages. It’s an organizational puzzle that Olivier is quick to compare to Tetris, “but with timpani and cel-los in place of the blocks.” And with no “game over,” given that BBS had to assemble 30 drum sets, 20 guitars, 20 bass guitars, 50 keyboards, 130 percussion instruments, 10 organs, and 20 electric pianos in order to be ready for all of the performances. This lineup was completed by 10 backline techs, with the necessary delicate touch as well as huge smiles, specially assigned to see to the needs of this musical menagerie.

Pascal Graticola, Commercial Director of BBS, expects to be able to satisfy 99% of re-quests for equipment, including unscheduled rehearsals and jam sessions. Despite this suc-cess rate sufficient to make a stage manager swoon with joy, the two weeks of the Festival represent a major undertaking. The team still has flashbacks to July 12, 2011—with a concert that very night in the Auditorium Stravinski, Seal’s tour truck was stuck at the Swiss border. In just a few hours they had to put together the entire backline required for a major Pop-Soul performance, and Seal is not known for stinting on props and equipment…The concert was a total success, proving that Graticola had achieved his objective: “We’ve done our job if we don’t hear a peep about ourselves.” Except for this article, which in no way detracts from their talents. Producteur parisien, Gesaff elstein se sert des langages techno et électro pour développer un univers sonore propre et se fait remarquer bien au-delà de la communauté techno.

Malgré le côté sombre et pesant qui peut transparaître de ses morceaux, ces derniers se montrent si fi nement ajustés qu’ils procurent une intense satisfaction : on éprouve un plaisir profond à entendre aussi parfaitement retrans-crite l’ambiance ambivalente de notre époque.

Gesaff elstein is a Parisian artist who uses the languages of Electro and Techno to develop a unique soundscape that is creating buzz far beyond the Techno community. His tracks certainly have a dark side, but they are crafted with such precision that they are eminently satisfying. Few artists manage to so perfectly transcribe our era’s ambivalent ambiance.

Shearwater fait une halte au Montreux Jazz Café

Le nom du groupe créé en 2001 est une trou-vaille du chanteur Jonathan Meiburg, diplômé en ornithologie. Shearwater se traduit en français par « puffi n » et désigne un oiseau marin. Le groupe texan est le fruit de la collaboration entre Jona-than Meiburg et Will Sheff , tous deux membres du groupe Okkervil River. La bassiste Kim Burke, le batteur Thor Harris et le multi-instrumentiste Howard Draper rejoignent le groupe au fur et à mesure, apportant de nouvelles sonorités.

Shearwater se distingue par ses titres aux sons épurés et intenses. Son 7ème et nouvel album, sorti début 2012, marque un nouveau virage dans la carrière du groupe. Agrémenté d’un soupçon de new wave, Animal Joy explore pour la première fois les contrées du rock progressif. Seuls éléments immuables du groupe : la voix de son chanteur reconnaissable à ses tonalités mélodieuses et explosives et la fameuse touche folk onirique présentes depuis son tout 1er album, The Dissolving Room, sorti en 2001.

Shearwater makes a stop at the Montreux Jazz Café

This Texan band is named after a sea-bird—singer Jonathan Meiburg, who studied ornithology in college, came up with this moni-ker. Formed in 2001, Shearwater is the result of the collaboration between Meiburg and Will Sheff , both of whom are also associated with the group Okkervil River. Bassist Kim Burke, drummer Thor Harris and multi-instrumentalist Howard Draper successively joined the band, each bringing in new dynamics.

Shearwater is known for the pure and intense sound of their music. They are now charting whole new territories with their 7th album, Animal Joy, released earlier this year. With something of a new-wave vibe, this album ex-plores and paints progressive rock landscapes. Meiburg’s highly characteristic voice and the band’s famously dreamy folk touch are the only elements that have been present since the band’s very fi rst album, The Dissolving Room, released in 2001. INTERVIEW

L’album Heroes of Today a été produit par My Major Company. Pourquoi ce choix ?

L’idée que le public donne son avis avant les maisons de disques nous a semblé être quelque chose d’assez frais, vraiment dans l’air du temps. Nous avons aimé pouvoir diff user nos titres sur internet. En 2 semaines, les producteurs-contributeurs ont parié sur nous et nous avons pu réaliser cet album.

Tu as été révélé en 2002 avec Starlight, qu’as-tu fait depuis ?

Starlight a été le fruit d’une collaboration avec les Supermen Lovers. C’est un des premiers titres que j’ai écrit et interprété. On a tourné pendant deux ans dans les festivals et sur les scènes électro, en Asie et en Europe. A mon retour, j’ai eu envie de m’éloigner un peu de l’électro, qui n’est pas idéale pour s’exprimer en temps que chanteur. J’ai dû trouver les bonnes personnes, mûrir artistique-ment ; j’ai aussi écrit pour d’autres personnes, pour le cinéma et pour la télé. Puis j’ai rencontré mon groupe et j’ai décidé de poser mes valises.

Raconte-nous ton pèlerinage en Asie…Je suis parti sac au dos, pour voyager. Au départ,

le voyage ne devait pas durer 4 ans, je le raconte dans un titre de l’album, Linger on the Road. C’était un voyage sur les traces de mes héros psyché, comme les

Beatles, Hendrix, ou les auteurs comme Jack Kerouac.

Pourquoi avoir traduit le tube Bang Bang en français ?

Les radios nous ont dit qu’elles adoraient le titre, mais qu’il fallait le traduire. C’est un titre fédérateur. Nous voulions voir des milliers de personnes le reprendre en cœur. Au début, nous ne voulions pas le traduire, mais le résultat nous a plu, car nous écoutions ce titre depuis 2 ans et la version française l’a rafraichi. Le morceau a été renvoyé en radio et le lendemain il était sur toutes les ondes françaises. Benjamin Keller

You made Heroes of Today with My Major Company. Why?

We thought it was a pretty innovative and modern idea to be able to get the public’s opin-ion before the record companies’. We loved our songs being on the Web. In two weeks, the producer-contributors bet on us and we were able to make this album.

You were discovered in 2002 with Starlight. What have you been doing since then?

Starlight was the result of collaboration with the Supermen Lovers. It was one of the

fi rst songs I wrote and performed. We toured for two years, hitting Electro shows in Asia and Europe. When I got back, I wanted to move away from Electro—it’s not ideal for a singer to express himself. I had to fi nd the right people and mature artistically. I also wrote for other people, for cinema and for TV. Then I met my band and decided to settle down.

Tell us about your pilgrimage in Asia…I left on a backpacking trip. It wasn’t meant

to last four years—I go into that in Linger on the Road, one of the songs on the album. I voyaged in the footsteps of my psychedelic heroes: The Beatles, Hendrix, Jack Kerouac…

Why did you translate the single Bang Bang into French?

Radio stations told us they loved the song, but they wanted us to translate it. It’s a song with wide appeal. At fi rst, we didn’t want to translate it, but we loved the result. We’d been listening to this song for two years and the French version made it fresh again. It was sent to radio stations and on the following day, it was all over the French airwaves.

L’ATELIER QUI FAIT BATTRE LES CŒURS

Ian Anderson, fi gure de proue du groupe de rock britannique Jethro Tull, a apporté un rayon de soleil dans la grisaille qui régnait hier autour du Petit Palais. Entouré des autres membres du groupe, il a animé un atelier au sujet de son ins-trument de prédilection : la fl ûte.

Digne d’un concert privé, l’atelier a commencé par ce qu’Ian Anderson a lui-même qualifi é de version rock n’ roll de Henry VIII’s Marigold tout droit sorti d’Angleterre. Ce premier morceau a fait taper des pieds la salle entière et a capté l’attention de la foule pour les 90 minutes suivantes.

Le public s’est vu présenter une multitude de styles de musique diff érents, dont un peu de blues et le titre phare du groupe datant de 1971 Life is a Long Song, puis Ian Anderson a convié deux amis fl utistes à monter sur scène à ses côtés.

L’atelier a atteint son sommet avec la venue du fondateur du Festival, Claude Nobs, qui s’est joint au groupe sur scène pour jouer de l’harmo-nica ou plutôt de l’ « orgue de bouche » selon les mots d’Anderson. Après quelques délibérations cocasses, les amis de longue date se sont lancés

dans une jam session endiablée. Claude s’est confi é avec humour : « C’est la

première fois en cinquante ans que je porte ce tee-shirt. » Puis, il s’est retourné pour montrer l’inscription « Performer » fi gurant dans son dos. Il a poursuivi en saluant la qualité de cet atelier exceptionnel, qui a su faire appel à la fois au cœur et à l’esprit. Son propre cœur a battu tout du long, « presque trop vite, dirait mon docteur » glissa t-il, soulevant les rires et les applaudissements du public.

Des anecdotes d’Ian Anderson à la présence charismatique de Claude, en passant par les ques-tions du public, cet atelier à nul autre pareil s’est avéré à la fois amusant, fascinant et résolument unique. Helena Macadam

A HEARTFELT WORKSHOP

Ian Anderson, front man of British rock band Jethro Tull, led an exceptional workshop that brightened up the grey views surrounding the Petit Palais. Joined by his fellow band members, Anderson’s workshop focused largely on what he is most commonly associated with: the fl ute.

More like a private concert, the workshop

commenced with what Anderson described as a rock and roll version of England’s Henry VIII’s Marigold. This fi rst number generated a room-full of tapping feet and had the crowded room captivated for the next ninety minutes.

The audience was treated to a variation of musical styles—the band played some Blues, their 1971 classic “Life is a Long Song”, and Anderson even invited two friends and fellow fl autists on stage to perform alongside him.

The crux of the workshop came when Fes-tival founder Claude Nobs joined the band on stage equipped with his harmonica or ‘mouth organ’ as Anderson referred to it. After some comical key deliberations, the long-standing friends played an incredibly passionate and energetic jam session.

Claude provided some comedy confess-ing, “this is the first time in fifty years that I’m wearing this” then turned around to show the word “Performer” printed on the back of his t-shirt. He went on to say that for him this was an exceptional workshop “full of soul and heart” adding that his heart had been beating throughout, “almost too hard for my doctor”, rousing laughter and applause from the audience.

Including anecdotes from Ian Anderson, ques-tions from the audience and the involvement of Claude, this was a workshop like no other. Fun, insightful and most defi nitely unique.

3 QUESTIONS

Vous avez notamment cette année des groupes comme Amy Macdonald, Alabama Shakes ou Michael Kiwanuka jouant à Montreux. Que représente le Festival pour un agent suisse comme vous?

C’est un festival légendaire ! Les artistes sont très impressionnés par l’histoire de Montreux. Aujourd’hui par exemple, Michael Kiwanuka est monté au Chalet de Claude Nobs. Pour quelqu’un comme lui, c’est un véritable musée de la musique… Et lorsqu’il a su qu’il allait rencontrer là-bas Quincy Jones, il n’en croyait pas ses oreilles ! D’un point de vue plus «business», c’est une plateforme très intéressante pour moi. Il y a de la place pour de «grandes stars», mais aussi pour de nouveaux groupes, qui y jouent souvent pour la première fois en Suisse.

Quel est le rôle d’un agent suisse pour des groupes internationaux ?

Les groupes ont un agent international qui gère l’organisation de leur tournée. Pour les groupes que je représente, je suis promoteur à l’année de leurs concerts en Suisse. Pour la saison des festivals, je fais l’intermédiaire. Comme j’ai une relation à long terme avec les agents, je peux agir comme «faci-litateur». Et pour les groupes en développement, j’essaie d’apporter ma connaissance du marché suisse pour trouver les meilleures opportunités pour les groupes.

On parle beaucoup de changements dans le marché de la musique. Le sentez-vous ?

Il ne faut pas faire de lien direct entre la baisse des recettes liées à la vente de disques et l’augmen-tation des cachets. C’est surtout la prolifération des festivals qui augmente la demande et donc les prix.

Pour les «petits groupes», la baisse des moyens des maisons de disques complique les choses. Mais pour les artistes établis, d’autres sources de revenus ont été trouvées, comme le sponsoring, la publicité ou même… les séries télévisées !

You have acts like Amy Macdonald, Alabama Shakes and Michael Kiwanuka playing Montreux this year. What does the Montreux Jazz Festival represent for a Swiss agent like yourself ?

Montreux is legendary! The artists are very impressed by its history. Let me give you an ex-ample: today, Michael Kiwanuka was invited to Claude Nobs’ Chalet. For someone like him, it’s a veritable museum of music…When he found out he would meet Quincy Jones there, he was absolutely stunned!

As a businessman, it’s a major platform for me. Plenty of “big stars” but also upcoming bands, often performing in Switzerland for the first time.

How does a Swiss agent help international bands?

The bands have an international agent who organizes their tour. For the bands I represent, I’m in charge of promoting their concerts in Switzerland all year round. During festival season, I’m the middleman. I know their agents, so I can act as a facilitator. As for newer acts, my knowledge of the Swiss market helps when it comes to finding them the best opportunities.

Many say that the music industry is changing. Do you see that in your work?

It would be a mistake to draw a direct link between weakening record-sales revenues and higher ticket prices. It’s the growing number of festivals that increases the demand and therefore the prices. For «small bands,» reduced record-label resources make things a bit more complicated. But well-established artists are finding new sources of income: sponsoring, advertising… and even TV shows!
