Welcome everyone to 2018.

This year has started very smoothly for our school. This is due to everyone playing their parts.

Thank YOU for ensuring that your children have all of the gear they need to start the school year. Your kids look great in their school uniform and a huge well done to everyone who purchased black school shoes. The ratio of coloured shoes to black is improving in black’s favour every year. It makes our kids look very smart and part of a team.

Thank you to our teaching staff. They have worked a great deal during the holidays to ensure that their units of work and or-ganisational aspects of classroom management are all in place. Every class hit the ground running in the first week. I observed a group learning challenge in Mrs Deakin’s room, I commented on Mrs Deakin’s bravery to conduct such an activity in the first week. Mrs Deakin explained that most of the class were familiar with how to work in teams from being in her room for the last one or two years. Those children were able to support our Preps. This is what multi-age is all about! Way to go Mrs Dea-kin and Prep/1/2.

I observed a lesson on connectives in Mr McGuire’s class. These kids are already charging into their unit of writing and learn-ing about one of the big aspects of writing and one that shows up in our NAPLAN data as being an area to work on. Connec-tives help to join ideas in a sequenced cohesive manner. Nice work Mr McGuire and Year 3/4.

In my classroom we also started on our 2018 writing journey on an area that that has been flagged as a challenge for our stu-dents through NAPLAN data analysis. We implemented a new strategy for generating ideas. All teaching staff learnt about this at a professional development we went to in the pupil free days, held in the week before school commenced. I nearly fell over when I heard kids groan when I said we had to stop writing (I am not sure I have EVER heard that before) and one child said, “I love knowing what I want to write about and having heaps of ideas.” SCORE Miss Carlile and Year 5/6.

Thank you to our teacher aides. This terrific band of workers do many behind the scenes tasks. They ensure our first aid equipment is in place, they tidy spaces, they make sure the library is ready to go and that computer passwords will work., play equipment is put out, posters are printed… you name it, these ladies get it done.

Thank you to Kim and Mr Lamprecht. You will have noticed how wonderful the school looks. These two worked very hard over the holidays to revamp and fix and clean many areas of our school. This year the State Government have allocated a signifi-cant increase in funds for a schools officer. That means that Mr Lamprecht will be able to work at our school on grounds for 2 days every week. He will also be teaching Science on Thursdays.

Thank you to the volunteers. Over the holidays staff have dragged, coerced, begged, or maybe just asked their families to step in and help out. Mr Lamprecht’s son came to help paint, my son in law and daughter replaced a step and Kim’s daughter painted the STUNNING mural in Mr McGuire’s room. These are the volunteers I know about. There are probably more. Thank you.

Some of this work is expected of these people; it is their job. What is not expected and cannot be guaranteed is the spirit of generosity and love that it is done in. Our school is loved by its community. How wonderful.

Regards

Pam

IMPORTANT: School Review

On the 8th-9th of March our school will be involved in a Whole School Review. Reviews are an important part of how the Education Department monitors and supports Queensland state schools. They give schools independent feedback about how they are performing. Principals use the findings to work with their school community and assistant regional director to devel-op clear actions to move the school forward.

Reviews are not used to compare schools, or to rate the performances of principals, teachers or school staff. They are about supporting schools in the way that that particular school needs to be supported.

There are 3 kinds of review. We will be involved in a full school review. This is the most common kind of review. Our review team will consist of between 2 and 4 reviewers.

Why do you need to know this?

You are part of our school community and thus it is important that you know what is happening in our school. During their visit, the school review team will also speak to some staff, students, parents and other members of the school community.

What happens after the review?

The review tem presents its findings to the school’s principal and may then also brief our staff. A report is prepared which presents findings and improvement strategies from the review. This report is shared on our website.

Please keep an eye out for further information regarding our review.

Have you seen our new murals?

Mr L and Alicia Duncan have been busy giving

some areas around the school an exiting new look.

Bullying No Way Day

With Bullying No Way day being Friday 16th of March it is timely for everyone in the Mount Mee State School Community to have a refresher

regarding bullying:

· What is bullying?

· What are the effects of bullying?

· What are the consequences of bullying?

· What role do we all play in the prevention of bullying? And,

· What do our students think the state of bullying is at our school?

Late last year we conducted a survey of students form 3-6 regarding bullying. They were asked if they have been bullied, how often they were

bullied, what kind of bullying and who has bullied them.

Whilst is was very pleasing that all of the children in the upper years with the exception of two students do not feel that they have been bullied,

some children in the middle years believe that that have been bullied. They mostly report that they are rarely bullied but feel that they have

been the victim of these kinds of bullying:

· Swearing

· Being hurt physically

· Being left out of a group

· Given dirty looks

· Teasing and name calling, and

· Rumours being spread.

So, now that we have this information, what do we as MMSS community members do?

We make sure that we all know: What bullying is:

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or

psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or

online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

( source: The effects of bullying)

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

The bully: Students who persistently bully others have been found to have later issues in mental health and educational outcomes, as well as

showing criminal and anti-social behaviour.

Bystanders: Many students who are bystanders to bullying feel distress and anxiety about seeing

something they consider to be wrong.

The Person who is bullied: The most obvious and immediate effect is reducing students' participa-

tion, learning and enjoyment of school.

Feeling unsafe or being unable to focus on learning at school can have its own long term impacts.

Staying away from school to avoid being bullied can lead to additional problems.

Other impacts include physical health complaints and fatigue, mental health impacts such as de-

pression and anxiety, and social implications including self-doubt and reluctance to participate in

group activities.

Please read our next newsletter for the next instalment of our bullying information where we have

answer to :

· What are the consequences of bullying?

· What role do we all play in the prevention of bullying?

In the meanwhile, here is a helpful support tool that you can use if your child talks to you about

bullying.

Chappy News

Hello there! Chappy Shannon here. It’s so great to be back to school for 2018!

Not everyone is familiar with Chaplaincy or what exactly I get up to here as a

Chappy at Mount Mee State School so here is a brief description of what I do. In

a nutshell, my role is to be a supportive, safe person for the students, staff and

families of our school to come to for support. I am able to provide our school

community with a caring, listening ear for the issues they are facing.

I see a number of students one on one in class and lunchtime for what we Chap-

py’s call ‘pastoral care’ which includes one on one supportive conversations. If

you would like your child to see me one on one, let me or the school know. A form needs to be signed for me to see your

child on an ongoing basis. I have also been able to get alongside parents and staff when life has become a bit rough. My

job is to provide social, emotional and spiritual support to our school community through the various programs and sup-

portive conversations I undertake. And I love it!

One of the programs that I am running this term, starting next Wednesday lunchtime is SUPA Club. SUPA Club is a volun-

tary program designed for primary school students who are interested in looking at spirituality, religion and everyday life

from a Christian perspective. Each week we will read through a cool story from the bible and play some games and activi-

ties that fit with the story. A form is needed to be signed and submitted to the school in order for your child to partici-

pate. I am super thrilled to be able to run this program because it is a heap of fun for everyone involved!

Other happenings this term are Breakfast Club every Friday morning from 8am. We start back this Friday and look for-

ward to seeing you there. We run Brekky Club in the undercover area in the school for our students. Parents are welcome

to come down and join the fun. Tea and coffee (from a pod machine!) are available for parents who wish to come along

and have a chat with myself and/or the Breakfast Club team of Rhonda and Wietske. We would love to have you join us!

A big thankyou to those families who donated breakfast food items to kick us for the year – it has helped a lot! We are

very thankful for the supportive families in our community who come along side us.

In other news, our Mount Mee SS Chaplaincy Committee is currently looking for some new members. We are looking to

fill a number of roles including the Chairperson role for the Committee. We meet together once to twice a term after

school hours (3-4.30pm). If you are able and keen to support and be part of Chaplaincy in this way please come and chat

to me. I have included a flyer about the Chaplaincy Committee for further info on what it’s all about.

Take care,

Chappy Shannon
