BOOKMAN model 440 uses twoCR2032, 3-volt batteries. Here is howto install or replace them.Warning: When the batteries losepower or are removed from BOOK-MAN, information that you entered inits built-in book, and in an installed car-tridge, will be erased.

1. Turn BOOKMAN over.2. Slide off its battery cover in

the direction of the triangle.3. Install the batteries with their

plus signs facing you.4. Replace the battery cover.

Warning: Never install or remove acartridge when BOOKMAN is on. Ifyou do, information that you enteredin its built-in book, and in an installedcartridge, will be erased.

1. Turn BOOKMAN off.2. Turn BOOKMAN over.3. Align the tabs on the car-

tridge with the notches inthe slot.

4. Press the cartridge downuntil it snaps into place.

Selecting Books Using the Color Keys

The red, green, yellow, and blue keys onyour BOOKMAN change functions ac-cording to which book is selected.

When the built-in book is selected, thecolor keys function as labelled on theBOOKMAN keyboard. When a car-tridge book is selected, the color keysfunction as labelled on that cartridge.

Remember, the color keys for BOOK-MAN books in cartridges function aslabelled on their cartridges, not as onthe keyboard.

Once you have installed a cartridge inyour BOOKMAN, you must selectwhich book you want to use.

1. Turn BOOKMAN on.2. Press CARD.

These are sample books.

3. Press or to highlight thebook you want to use.

4. Press ENTER to select it.

Changing Settings

You can adjust the font size, shutofftime, and screen contrast. Font sizechanges the number of lines of textthat appear on screen. The shutoff timeis how long BOOKMAN stays on if youforget to turn it off.

1. Press CLEAR.2. Press MENU.3. Press the arrow keys to

highlight the Setup menu.4. Highlight Set Font, Set

Shutoff, or Set Contrast.

5. Press ENTER.6. Highlight a setting.

Or press or if you selectedSet Contrast.To exit without changing settings,press BACK.

7. Press ENTER to select it.

Before you start using a book, youshould view a demonstration of whatit can do.If the book is built-in, the demonstra-tion automatically appears the first timethat you select it. To stop the demon-stration, press CLEAR. To disable it,press MENU, highlight the Setupmenu, and then select Disable Demo.If the book is in a cartridge, select ViewDemo from the Setup menu to viewits demonstration.

➤ Help is Always at HandYou can view a help message atvirtually any screen by pressing HELP.Press the direction keys to read it. Toexit help, press BACK or HELP.

➤ Follow the ArrowsThe flashing arrows on the right ofthe screen show which arrow keysyou can press to move aroundmenus or view more text.

Finding Definitions

It’s easy to look up a word in the dic-tionary. Simply type it at the Entryscreen and press ENTER. Try this ex-ample.

1. Press CLEAR.2. Type a word (e.g., knowl-

edge).

3. Press ENTER.

This is a dictionary entry.4. Press or SPACE to move

down.

5. Hold ✩ and press DN to viewthe next dictionary entryalphabetically listed.

6. Press CLEAR when done.

Finding Words in Definitions

Search for a Word lets you find all ofthe definitions in which a specific wordappears.

1. Press CLEAR.2. Press MENU.3. Select Search for a word from

the CMDS menu.4. Type a word (e.g., legal).5. Press ENTER.

6. Hold ✩ and press DN to viewthe next definition with yourword in it.

To see the previous one, hold ✩

and press UP.7. Press or SPACE to read.8. Press CLEAR when done.

Finding Synonyms

When you see THES flash once in theupper right of the screen, that wordhas a thesaurus entry.

1. Press CLEAR.2. Type a word (e.g., splendid).3. Press THES.

Or hold ✩ and press T.

This is the first thesaurus entry.4. Press to view synonyms.

5. Hold ✩ and press DN to viewmore thesaurus entries.

To return to the previous thesau-rus entry, hold ✩ and press UP.

6. Press CLEAR when done.

➤ Understanding Thesaurus Entries

Thesaurus entries consist ofthesaurus meanings and asynonym list. A thesaurus meaningis a definition shared by a list ofsynonyms.

➤ Two Ways to Back UpPressing BACK takes you back tothe previous screen you viewed.You can continue to back up untilyou get to Enter your word.

Holding ✩ and pressing UP takesyou to the previous screen ofsimilar information. For example, ifyou were viewing a dictionarydefinition, you would go to theprevious definition.

Finding a Letter

If you are uncertain about a letter in aword, type a question mark in place ofeach unknown letter.

1. Type a word with ?’s.

2. Press ENTER.

3. Highlight a match.4. Press ENTER to define it.

5. Press CLEAR when done.

Finding a Series of Letters

To find prefixes, suffixes, and otherparts of words, type an asterisk in aword. Asterisks stand for a series ofletters. NOTE: If you type an asteriskat the beginning of a word, it may takea while to find the matching words.

1. Type a word with an ✱.

To type an asterisk, hold CAPand press ? ✱ .

2. Press ENTER.

3. Highlight a match.4. Press ENTER to define it.

5. Press CLEAR when done.

➤ Spelling Finding TipsYou can also use ?’s to help solvecrossword puzzles. For example, ifthe second letter of a five-letter wordis h and its last letter is w. Enter?h??w to see possible answers.

If you misspell a word, don’t worry. Itwill be corrected automatically.

1. Type a misspelled word.

To erase a letter, press BACK.2. Press ENTER.

3. Press to highlight acorrection.

4. Press ENTER to view itsdictionary entry.To go back to the correction list,press BACK.

5. Press CLEAR when done.

Correcting Misspellings Finding Confusables™

Confusables are homonyms and spell-ing variants that are easy to confuse.If a word has Confusables, CONF willflash once in the upper right of thescreen.

1. Type a word (e.g., rein).2. Press CONF.

Confusables come with identify-ing words.

3. Press ENTER and then high-light a word.

4. Press ENTER to define it, orpress THES to view its thesau-rus meaning.

5. Press CLEAR when done.

Another way to look up words is byhighlighting them in dictionary defini-tions, thesaurus entries, or word lists.Then you can find their definitions, the-saurus entries, Confusables, or addthem to your User list.

1. At any text, press ENTER tostart the highlight.

To turn the highlight off, pressBACK.

2. Press the arrow keys tohighlight a word.

3. Do one of the following:To... Press...define the word ENTERview a thesaurus THESentryview Confusables CONFadd word to User list LIST

Highlighting Words

The Path list lets you review the last15 words you looked up. Your Pathlist is automatically saved betweensessions until the batteries losepower.

Reviewing Words

1. Select Path list from theCMDS menu.Or hold ✩ and press P.

This is a sample Path list. If youhaven’t looked up any words, yousee: Path is empty.

2. Highlight a word.3. Press ENTER to define it.

4. Press THES to view a thesau-rus entry or CONF to view itsConfusables, if any.

You can create a User list of up to 40words. You can even add words to yourUser list that are not in this dictionary.Here’s how to add and to view a word.

1. Press LIST to view the Userlist menu.

If you haven’t added words toyour User list, View list: **Empty**appears.

2. Highlight Add word. Thenpress ENTER.

3. Type a word (e.g., restive).

4. Press ENTER to add the word.5. Select View list: 1 word.

This is a User list of one word.

Using the User List Using the User List

Adding Highlighted WordsAt any text, you can highlight a wordand add it to your User list.

1. At text, press ENTER to startthe highlight.

2. Highlight a word.3. Press LIST.4. Select Add “your word”.

➤ Adding Words Not Found inThis Dictionary

When you add a word not in thisdictionary, you’re given threeoptions: Cancel, Add anyway, orCorrection list. Select an option.Caution: Adding words not inthis dictionary uses considerablymore memory than adding wordsthat are. If you add only words thatare not in the dictionary, your Userlist may hold as few as 10 words.

You can delete one or all the words inyour User list. Here’s how.

Deleting One Word1. Press LIST.2. Select Delete word.3. Highlight a word on the list.4. Press ENTER to delete it.

Deleting Your User List1. Press LIST.2. Select Erase list.3. Press Y to erase the entire

list. Or press N to cancel.

Using the User List

Sending Words

This BOOKMAN dictionary can sendwords to and receive words from cer-tain other BOOKMAN books.To send a word, you must first install acartridge in your BOOKMAN, and thatcartridge must be able to send or re-ceive words. To learn if a cartridge cansend or receive words, read its User’sGuide.

1. Highlight a word in this book.

To highlight a word in a list, pressthe arrow keys. To highlight aword in text, press ENTER andthen press the arrow keys.

2. Hold ✩ and press CARD.3. Highlight the other book.4. Press ENTER.

The word that you highlightedappears in the other book.

5. Press ENTER to look up theword.

Changing Game Settings

You can change the game settings atany time. Each setting applies to all thegames.

Word List lets you pick which wordsyou’ll play the games with. If you se-lect Type Them in, you’ll need to typein words after you select a game.

Word Length lets you pick how manyletters will be in the words (3-13).

Skill Level lets you select the level ofdifficulty.

1. Press MENU.2. Press to highlight the

Game menu.

3. Highlight a setting.4. Press ENTER to select it.

Playing the Games

Now that you have the games set, let’splay.

1. Press GAMES.

2. Press or to highlight agame.

3. Press ENTER to start it.

➤ Keeping ScoreIn Hangman and Word Train, yourscore appears after each round ofa game.

HangmanHangman challenges you to guess amystery word, indicated by ?’s, oneletter at a time. The number of guessesyou can make appears to right of the#’s. For a hint hold CAP and press ? ✱

Or press ? ✱ to end the round. NOTE:If you ask for a hint, you will lose theround. Press SPACE to start a newround. Press ENTER to view the defi-nition of the word. Press BACK to exita game and view the games list.

AnagramsAnagrams challenges you to find all ofthe words that can occur within a se-lected word. Each letter can only beused as many times as it appears inthe selected word. Each anagram mustbe a specified minimum length. Thiswill flash on the screen before eachgame. The number of possible ana-grams is shown on the right side ofthe screen.

Playing the Games Playing the Games

Type an anagram and then press EN-TER. Use the arrows to view anagramsyou’ve already entered. Hold CAP andpress ? ✱ to shuffle the letters in theselected word. Press ? ✱ to end around and reveal the remaining ana-grams. Highlight a word, and thenpress ENTER to see its dictionary defi-nition. Press BACK to exit Anagrams.

Word TrainAll aboard the Word Train spellinggame! You and the train take turns typ-ing letters to form a word. Whoevertypes the last letter wins. To view theletters you can type at your turn, holdCAP and press ? ✱ . Or press ? ✱ toend a round and reveal the word. PressENTER to view the dictionary defini-tion of the word.

• Do not put excessive pressureon the cartridges.

Resetting BOOKMAN

If the BOOKMAN keyboard fails to re-spond, or if its screen performs errati-cally, first press CLEAR and then pressON/OFF twice. If nothing happens, fol-low the steps below to reset it.Warning: Pressing the reset buttonwith more then very light pressure maypermanently disable your BOOKMAN.In addition, resetting BOOKMAN erasessettings and information entered into itsbuilt-in book, and in an installed cartridge.

1. Hold CLEAR and press ON/OFF.If nothing happens, try Step 2.

2. Use a paperclip to gently pressBOOKMAN’s reset button.The reset button is recessed in a pin-sized hole on the back of BOOK-MAN. Look for it on the batterycover or near the cartridge slot.

➤ Troubleshooting BOOKMAN• Make sure your cartridge, if any,

is installed correctly.• Check that the cartridge’s metal

contacts are dirt-and dust-free.

• Do not touch the metalcontacts on the cartridges.Caution: Touching these electricalcontacts with statically charged ob-jects, including your fingers, coulderase information entered in a car-tridge or built-in book.
