My Very Own Library

Introduction

Introducing…the 3rd year of My Very Own Library!

My Very Own Library is a literacy initiative

that helps students build their own home libraries.

Large book collection @ home = more powerful impact on reading frequency than household income

Parents reading @ home = more powerful impact on reading frequency than household income

10–20 books provided at end of school year = reading gains for 50% of students (reversing the trend of low-income students losing ground over the summer)

2010 meta-analysis found that access to

print materials through book

ownership programs like MVOL had a

statistically significant impact on:

• Emergent literacy skills• Reading performance• Writing performance• Attitude toward reading• Motivation to read• Reading behavior• Basic language abilities• General academic

performance

HISTORY…

During the 2011-2012 school year, the pilot year of MVOL, over 60,000 books were given to nearly 6,000 students at 8 Newark public schools.

During MVOL’s second year, over 123,000 books were given to nearly 13,000 students in 20 Newark public schools, and one Richmond, CA school, Making Waves Academy.

Now in its third year, MVOL will continue to support the same schools from the 2012-2013 school year, with an enhanced mission to increase family engagement & literacy support.

Introduction

It all began with just one book...

Anne’s Mission: To give kids the powerful gift of NEW BOOKS,

and the support they need to help them flourish into strong readers.

Anne Feeley1954 - 2012

“Four years ago I became a volunteer reading coach for a local school. My first year I read with a boy who didn't have books at home and he wasn't interested. But by the years end he was reading at home. The next September when I arrived at school he was sitting in a circle of boys during lunch break; they were all reading. When he saw me he waved his book and said: ‘Miss, I love reading!’ My Very Own Library was born.” - Anne Feeley
