I. Organization of the Nervous System

The nervous system is the body’s principal control and integrating center. 신경계는 우리 몸의 주된 통제 및 통합센터이다.

It serves three broad functions: sensory, integrative, and motor: 신경계의 세 가지 기능: 감각, 통합, 운동 It senses changes within the body and in the outside environment;

신경계는 우리의 몸 내부와 바깥 환경에서의 변화를 감지한다.

It interprets the change.; and 신경계는 이러한 변화를 해석한다.

It responds to the interpretation by initiating action by muscular contraction or glandular secretion. 신경계는 근육을 수축 혹은 선을 통한 분비(땀)와 같은 행동을 취하게 함으로써 변화의 해석에 반응한다.

Through sensation, integration, and response, the nervous system rapidly maintains the body’s homeostasis. 감각, 통함, 반응을 통해 신경계는 재빨리 몸의 항상성을 유지한다.

A. Divisions of the Nervous System

The nervous system has two principal divisions: 신경계는 두 개의 구획으로 나뉜다.

the central nervous system (CNS); and 충추신경계

the peripheral nervous system (PNS). 말초신경계

1. The Central Nervous System

The CNS is command central for the entire nervous system. 중추신경계는 전체신경계의 명령을 내리는 센터이다.

It consists of the brain and the spinal cord. 중추신경계는 대뇌와 척수로 구성된다.

The term “brain” comes from the old Anglo-Saxon word braegen which means “the center of the nervous system.” “뇌”라는 용어는 앵그로색슨 족의

Braegen이라는 용어에서 유래되었는데 이는 ‘신경계 중심’이라는 의미이다.

In Greek, the word enkephalos pertains to the mass of nerve tissue housed within the bony confines of the head and provides the root word “encephalon.” 그리스어로 ‘enkephalos’라는 단어는 두개골 내에 위치한 신경조직 덩어리라는 의미는 내포하고 있다. 이는 “encephalon”이라는 단어의 어원이 되었다.

Your brain is three pounds of tofu-like tissue containing 1.1 trillion cells including 100 billion neurons. 우리의 뇌는 3파운도 정도이고 두부와 같은 형태로 100억개의 뉴론을 포함한 1.1조 개의 세포들로 구성되어있다.

The brain is responsible for higher level human functions such as reasoning and language. 대뇌는 추리와 언어 같은 인간의 고기능을 담당한다.

It is mushroom-shaped and is divided into four principal parts: the brainstem, the diencephalon, the cerebrum, and the cerebellum.

뇌는 버섯모양의 4개의 주요 부위로 나뉜다: 뇌간, 간뇌, 대뇌, 소뇌

The brainstem is like the stalk of the mushroom.

뇌간은 버섯의 줄기모양과 같다.

The lower end is continuous with the spinal cord.

뇌간의 맨 아래 부위는 척수와 연결된다.

As it ascends from the spinal cord, it has three divisions: the medulla oblongata, the pons, and the midbrain. 뇌간은 척수로부터 올라가면서,

3부위로 나뉜다: 연수, 뇌교, 중뇌.

Below the cerebrum and behind the brainstem is the cerebellum. 대뇌 아래와 뇌간의 뒤에는 소뇌가 위치해 있다.

Above the brainstem, the diencephalon consists primarily of the thalamus and hypothalamus. 뇌간 위에 위치한 간뇌는 주로 시상과 시상하부로 구성되어 있다.

The cerebrum spreads over the diencephalon, constituting about 7/8 of the total brain, and occupying most to the cranium. 대뇌는 간뇌 위를 덥고 있고 전체 뇌의 7/8을 차지하고 두개골의 대부분을 차지하고 있다.

The spinal cord begins as a continuation of the medulla from where it exits the cranium at the foramen magnum of the occipital bone. 척수는 연수의 연장선상이고, 후두골의 대공의 연접부위에서 두개골 밖으로 빠져나온다.

It continues for approximately 16-18” to end at the level of the upper border of the second lumbar vertebra.

척수는 대략 16-18인치 정도의 길이이고 두 번째 요추의 위쪽 경계에서 끝난다.

The cord serves as a conduit for the ascending and descending fiber tracts that connect the peripheral and spinal nerves with the brain. 척수는 구심성과 원심성 신경섬유로 로써 말초와 척수 신경을 대뇌에 연결하는 도관 역활을 한다.

It is functionally segmented into 31 sections, which each give rise to a pair of spinal nerves. 척수는 기능적으로 31개의 부분으로 나뉘어 있으며 이는 쌍을 이루고 있다.

The adult spinal cord is about 1” in circumference, except in the mid-cervical and mid-lumbar regions where it is slightly larger. 성인척수는 지름이 약 1인치 정도되고 중간 경추와 중간 요추 부위는 약간 더 크다.

The superior enlargement is termed the cervical enlargement; it extends from C4 to T1. 가장 큰 지름을 가진 부분은 경팽대라고 한다. 이는 C4에서 T1까지 이다.

Nerves serving the upper extremities arise from this area of the spinal cord. 상지(팔)을 담당하는 신경은 척수의 이 부분(경팽대)에서 나온다.

The inferior enlargement is termed the lumbar enlargement, extending from T9-T12. 하부 확장된 부분은 T9-T12까지 이며 요부(허리)팽대라고 한다.

Nerves serving the lower extremities arise from this area of the spinal cord. 하지(다리)를 담당하는 신경은 척수의 이 부위에서 뻗어 나온다.

Below the lumbar enlargement, the spinal cord tapers off between L1 and L2 into a conical portion known as the conus medullaris. 요부팽대 아래에서 척수는 L1과

L2사에서 원뿔모양에서 신경가닥이 풀어지는데 이 것을 척수원뿔이라 한다.

From the conus medullaris, the filum terminale, a non-nervous fibrous tissue, extends to attach to the coccyx. 척수원뿔에서 비신경성 섬유조직인 종말끈은 꼬리뼈까지 확장되어 붙어있다.

Nerves arising from the lower portion of the cord must angle inferiorly in the vertebral canal before leaving it.

척수의 아래부분에서 나온 신경들은 척추를 빠져나가기 전에 척수의 아래로 각을 이룬다.

Because it looks likes wisps of coarse hair flowing from the end of the cord, it is aptly named cauda equina—horse’s tail.

이 것은 척수의 끝부분에서 부터 말 꼬리 형태를 보이기 때문에 말의 꼬리라는 의미를 가진 말총이라 한다.
