Issue 68 | July 2013

It is a very useful design tool for Green Buildings based on LEED® US Standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), supporting schematic design and detailed energy cost evaluations.

HAP uses the ASHRAE heat transfer function method for load calculations and detailed 8,760 hour-by-hour simulation techniques for the energy analysis.

Carrier is now introducing the latest version of its Hourly Analysis Program software (HAP v4.7), incorporating new calculators and simulation models.

Among software enhancements is the ability to model new plant configura-tions using air-to-water and water-to-water heat pump chillers, as well as service water heating (SHW) systems, and the automatic calculation of venti-lation airflows per ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010 and minimum equipment efficiencies per ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010.

With the worldwide focus on Green Buildings, owners and building designers are increasingly turning to heat pump technology to cool and heat medium to large commercial buildings. HAP v4.7 expands plant modeling features to support green building designs.

Three new plant types are offered:• chilled water / hot water changeover plants using air-to-water or water-to-water reversible heat pump chillers• dedicated hot water plants using air-to-water or water-to-water heat pumps• hybrid hot water plants, which combine hot water boilers with air-to-water or water-to-water heat pumps.

In hospitals, hotels and schools, heating and cooling is a significant portion of total building energy use. HAP v4.7 now expands simulation modeling capa-bilities in this area, offering modeling for a stan-dalone plant, or a plant serving combined space heating and SHW loads. Hour-by-hour hot water consumption profiles, equipment characteristics and controls can be modeled to calculate detailed energy performance.

In addition to energy performance, HAP v4.7 assists with calculating code-compliant outdoor ventilation airflow rates, a key task when designing HVAC systems. Default room ventilation rates based on ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010 requirements and ventilation flow requirements for Standard 62.1 Ventilation Rate Procedure are addressed in the new version.

In addition, features are available to automatically set DX equipment efficiency based on ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010 minimum efficiency levels, which is an important time savings when working toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 analysis or ASHRAE Standard 189.1 analysis.

Major enhancements in v4.70 relate to three themes: plants, service hot water and standards. Key enhance-ments are summarized below:

1. Expanded Plant Modeling CapabilitiesWith a growing focus on green and sustainable building, owners and building designers are increasingly turning to heat pump technology to heat and cool commercial buildings. HAP v4.70 expands its central plant modeling features to support these designs with the following features:

• 2-pipe changeover plants using air-to-water or water-to- water reversible chillers.• Hot water plants using air-to-water or water-to-water heat pumps.• Hybrid hot water plants combining both hot water boilers and heat pumps.

2. Service Hot Water Models Energy used to produce service hot water (SHW) can be a significant fraction of total building energy use for hospitals, hotels, dormitories, restaurants and schools. HAP v4.70 adds detailed modeling capabilities for SHW systems:• Storage SHW systems.• Tankless and instantaneous SHW systems• Passive, pumped and recirculating distribution options.• Boilers or heat pumps as the heat source for SHW.• Combined plants serving both space heating and SHW demands.

3. Standards UpdatesTo support code compliance work under local building codes, HAP v4.70 provides the following:• Support for ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality• Support for ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings except Low Rise Residential Buildings.

4. Enhanced Schedules

Revised features exist for creating schedules directly from the Air System Properties and Plant Properties windows to simplify input and reduce data entry errors.

5. WizardsThe "wizard" features guide you through the process of select-ing weather data, creating a building and its HVAC systems, and defining utility rates. The wizard asks a short series of high level questions about each type of data. Based on the high level inputs, the software applies intelligent defaulting to automatically construct a complete, detailed virtual model for simulation. With this approach data for a complete energy analysis can be rapidly configured. Specific wizard features enhancements in HAP v4.70 include:

• Added changeover plants using air-to-water or water-to-water reversible chillers.• Expanded hot water plant options to allow use of air-to-water or water-to-water heat pumps in addition to boilers.• Added ability to model service hot water (SHW) loads.• Added ability to specify geothermal, surface and well water sources for chiller plants.• Revised plant diagrams to display the new plant configurations.• Replaced the "Hydronic Fan Coil" equipment type with separate "4-Pipe Fan Coil" and "2-Pipe Fan Coil" options• Added changeover controls for 2-Pipe Fan Coil and Chilled Water AHU equipment types.• Revised default values for self-contained electric humidifiers.• Updated Energy Information Administration (EIA) default electric and gas prices to use the latest published data (2011 and 2010).• Removed the confirmation message that appears when pressing the Finish button to improve usability.
